4:02 PM
DAT CHORUS.
thrash metal music + more modern / melodic / metalcore singing = win
also, DAT GUITAR SOLO

Like the beginning with the beat but meh
this song is addicting to me right now youtube.com/…

@Griffin listen through.
such a wide range of styles

and it grows on you fast

Bro I want in on that

4:06 PM
sfw?

Yup
@Polynomial Unless your boss is against secret movie organizations

heh

I want in. Bad

God damn wanna-be hackers.

heh, that cinema is awesome

4:09 PM
What the fuck that guy even talking about with that file download?
And ikr
Why is this called the DMZ?

In computer security, a DMZ (sometimes referred to as a perimeter network) is a physical or logical subnetwork that contains and exposes an organization's external-facing services to a larger and untrusted network, usually the Internet. The purpose of a DMZ is to add an additional layer of security to an organization's local area network (LAN); an external attacker only has access to equipment in the DMZ, rather than any other part of the network. The name is derived from the term "demilitarized zone", an area between nation states in which military action is not permitted. Rationale ...

Thank you. Everyone asks what the fuck I'm talking about. They think my non-existent car got towed.
So how is life treating everyone?

@Simon "excuse me but I seriously do not have time for searching , so I'm asking and hope a reply ." Riiight.
Cause that's what this site is for
people who don't have time to use Google

@tylerl Did you see my response? That's pretty much what I told him.

4:19 PM
Oh my god, I just saw what he replied. What a fucking dick.

he's an asshat

Hey guys, is there any way to turn on the notifications so it alerts me any time someone talks? I find that I'd like to know what's happening in the DMZ even if I'm in another tab / other application.

click the speaker icon at the top (next to the red "all rooms" button) and change it to "visible room"
whenever someone talks in here you'll get bonked
might get annoying though ;]

But is it the same kinda notification or is it just a sound?

sound

4:31 PM
This question was voluntarily removed by its author.
Success.

and you need the tab open

Yea. I'd hate that cuz it'd get annoying pretty fast.

@Simon yeah he deleted it.
I'd prefer him to have kept it
I hope he's learned from this, though.

Me too so people would know.

right oh
off home

4:32 PM
Hmmm only 43 tumbeweed badges awarded. I think that's a good thing.
Shows people are watching.
I'm looking back at the questions I've asked and the comments I've made to the responses.
I look like a total asshat. It's less of me trying to be an asshat more of I'm confused as fuck and frustrated because of it.

@Griffin :)

@tylerl Not sure what the happy face is for :P

@Griffin It's a textual proxy for me grinning

.... What are you smiling at tho?

4:51 PM
your last statement. I'll just keep it in mind next time I think you're acting like a total asshat.

<3

1 hour later…
6:04 PM
@Polynomial that's how I like playing solos - melodic over heavy riffs

6:31 PM
@Simon But we, the chosen ones, can still see it.

@Adnan Wow <3

@LucasKauffman some footage from the copter.. youtube.com/watch?v=OAkYR1MkUMA

@Simon For you, my love. i.imgur.com/3hYpUpD.png

@Adnan I like how polite most people were

@RoryAlsop I like that as well.

6:36 PM
You can undelete?!? Wow!!!

@RoryA Especially when they let you in to their boss' office when you tell them you're a friend/big client.
We get money for being good pentesters and they get fired.

@Adnan hahahahaha

7:16 PM
good day everybody

Ahoy there.

@GreenFly If you say so.

@Simon how is it going?
@Iszi I think it is
it has been sunny and around 90 degrees. Quite hot tho

@GreenFly HOW ARE YOU STILL ALIVE?!!!

@Adnan it is around 32 for you people

7:24 PM
@GreenFly Perfect, yourself?

@Simon waiting for the sun to go down a bit to go for a swim

@GreenFly Why does it have to be down to do that, though?
Skinny dipping? Kinky fly.

@Simon oh those days are long behind me. If I go skinny dipping now I just scare the little kids.

You're not supposed to do that while kids are around.

I go when the sun is down a bit so I do not get sunburn

7:31 PM
Or at least that's what I thought.
Oh ok.

@Simon That's what she said!

@Iszi Dayum.

@Simon yeah, it is very strange here in the states. People are very pedophilophobic
3

@Simon Yeah, I was going for "Most awkward 'That's what she said!' of the day" with that one.

@GreenFly What do you mean?

7:35 PM
@Adnan when I try to take photos of the trees or the beach,my friends sometime tell me "oh no, put the camera down,people will think you are pedophile"
or when I try to give little kids candy
such a strange country
one time in the store I saw a little girl in princess dress, I said "what a cute princess!" and the parents gave me strange looks

@GreenFly It's probably the way you say it

You can't really blame them though. There are some fucked up people out there.

Do you have a mustache and wear a trenchcoat?

@Adnan Haha

@Simon back home people are not very paranoid like here. I remember that parents let their children swim naked in lakes and no problems

7:42 PM
@GreenFly Where is that? (If you don't mind me asking). Because the description sounds a lot like Finland.

@Adnan in sweden

I think it's the news here in America, it drives people into mass paranoia.

I bet that the criminality rate in the USA is higher though.

@GreenFly Interesting. Talar du svenska?

@Adnan SI SENIOR

7:46 PM
@Adnan ja

@Simon The vast vast majority of child abuse (sexual and otherwise) is by people the child actually knows, not random strangers. But that's a very uncomfortable thing to think about. We don't want to think about it. So we get paranoid about outsiders instead. Common pattern.

@GreenFly Well, that's pretty much everything I know in Swedish.

@Adnan are you trying to learn it?

@GreenFly I tried a while ago. Many people speak it here, so you catch a word or two.

@Adnan where?

7:48 PM
@GreenFly Finland

It depends on where you live @Simon, cities will usually always have much higher criminality rates. I think people are also more likely to be watching the news fairly regularly in large cities. High criminality feeds paranoia, its a vicious circle.

@Adnan our mortal enemies!
I'm just joking
@TRiG I agree with this

@GreenFly Yeah yeah! It's all fun an games until you march in Helsinki.
@GreenFly Oh, actually now that I think about it, no wonder the other day you said you liked Therion.

@DavidFreitag A paranoiac is just a moron who watches CNN but does not understand it.

@Adnan they are not popular in my age group. but they are famous swedish band,so I must check them from time to time

7:54 PM
Yes, but think of the average american watching the news. Also, its more about how the news blows things way out of proportion, beating subjects like a dead horse for the ratings.

News sure do make people paranoid but it's just not worth it to trust a stranger, especially with kids. They're too vulnerable.

Exactly, i think most people operate under the ideal, "It's better to be safe than sorry"

have a pleasant day/evening everybody.

See ya.

@ThomasPornin I believe the news exploit the viewer's gullibility to some extent. A news about how 99% are nice and helpful doesn't sell as much as "OMG PEDOPHILES, GAYS, MUSLIMS, MEXICANS TRY TO DESTROY MURICA".

7:58 PM
@Adnan Ahhh, so it is you lot I have to thank for the awesome TURISAS!

For the most part, it doesn't really matter which news channel you watch.

@Simon Which is an extremely moronic attitude!
But then I know that anyone who tried to abduct my kids would end up pretty unhappy - even before I got to them, the kids would wreak all kinds of merry hell
5

@Adnan News is ... news.

@RoryAlsop Also Ensiferum and Wintersun.

Forget depressing news. Turisas is so good.

8:00 PM
@TRiG I disagree.

@Adnan yeah - but I haven't seen them yet

@DavidFreitag They rocked at Download festival

8:01 PM
hey - check out the number two question on the supercollider :-)

11
Q: Can gunpowder get you to the moon?

James JenkinsIn 'From the Earth to the Moon' (1873) by Jules Verne, A huge cannon is used to send a spaceship to the moon. A lively discussion in chapter IX leads to using 400,000 pounds of fulminating cotton to launch their ship to the moon. Two questions; Does 1,600,000 pounds of powder equal 400,000 p...

@TRiG Hehehehehe... thank you for that one. Quite funny
@DavidFreitag They all come from Finland!!!

I would kill for a trip to finland. Once i'm through graduate school i want to move to Europe somewhere.

@Adnan Better if you know the papers concerned. Russell Howard now has a whole show mocking what's in the news.

@DavidFreitag Best place in Europe is Canada.

8:03 PM
@Adnan lol
I have a Canadian PA - she makes Canada sound even better than I expected
I have only seen it from the air
it looked white, mostly
:-)

I suppose Canada is the closes thing Americans get to Europe, @Adnan.

@RoryAlsop No, really. Canada and Russia should switch.

@Adnan you just want to be able to go next door to Canada
would make Russian/Merkin conflict simpler - less collateral damage

@RoryAlsop But seriously, Russia and America are pretty much the same.

@Adnan hahahahahahahaha
In our great states of Siberia, Texas and Kentuckystan...

8:05 PM
@RoryAlsop lol

@RoryAlsop @DavidFreitag The social system, the medical care, the gun laws, I mean really, Canada belongs to Europe
@Simon Come here, sweetie. Come here. No would would make fun of your hats here.

@Adnan It's totally true. I was talking to a friend who lives in Canada about the healthcare system there. He said that the ranking for priority was US citizens, other travelers, Canadian citizens, elderly, and then vagrants. That whole system just sounds... messed up.

@RoryAlsop she's not Katherine Ryan is she? :))

@TildalWave no - who is that? Should I know her? Do I want to?

@RoryAlsop pretty funny lady, a good looking one too, although that's subjective... a stand up comedian, was on Mock the week, 8 out of 10 cats,...
immigrated to UK :)

8:14 PM
@TildalWave don't know her, but I did share a flat with this lady for a couple of years:
Maria Bamford (born September 3, 1970) is an American stand-up comedian and voice actress. She is best known for her portrayal of her dysfunctional family and self-deprecating comedy involving jokes about depression and anxiety. Her comedy style is surreal, and incorporates voice impressions of various character types. Early life Bamford was born at the naval base in Port Hueneme, California, where her father Joel was serving as a Navy doctor. She grew up in Duluth, Minnesota, where she attended Chester Park Elementary and The Marshall School. She went on to attend Bates College, the Uni...

@RoryAlsop Not sure I know this one... intellectual or goofy type humour? Because I don't care much for goofy... but I hear @AviD does :P

a bit of both

@TildalWave goofy?? that's disney!

@RoryAlsop If she was in something I watched, then I've seen her... if she wasn't, I didn't :)
@AviD Friends is goofy

oddly enough, that was one of my not-halloween costumes growing up...
@RoryAlsop "share a flat" - is that some kind of weird euphamism?

8:21 PM
@AviD that's probably too hard to answer straight :P you should ask about her knickers, if @RoryAlsop ironed them in the mornings,... you know, be subtle! :P

@TildalWave okay okay, I got this.
Hey @RoryAlsop, does her carpet match her drapes?
Or did you guys have wood floors...

I hope not, blonde flowing locks like that could be hell on a zipper.

@AviD hehehe that's the way, you're getting the hang of this

@DavidFreitag huh what you talking about? I was asking about the furnishings in the shared flat.
Of course.

@AviD Shag carpets don't do well with vacuums

8:26 PM
that just sounds.... unhygienic.

Yes, but with a big enough washing-machine you don't have to vacuum.

yeah, but I wouldnt want to walk barefoot on a carpet after you've had your way with it.
even if you did put it through a good wash.
@RoryAlsop was she bipolar when she was with you? That must have been fun.

Fair point. But honestly would the surface matter? Only burnination could cure something like that.

exactly. And I would rather not know that I did walk on such a rug.

Ignorance is the best disinfectant?

8:31 PM
@RoryAlsop Whoa. SHE WAS WORDGIRL????
you lived with wordgirl!!!!
Seems she will also be Lois Lane, starting next month.
What is this "Tales of Metropolis"?

@AviD Crazy eyes!

@AviD yerr - was that one moar famous?

I can't believe Seventh Swamphony is Kalmah's final album. They are just too good to stop making music.

@RoryAlsop well.... for kids anyway. my kids used to watch it all the time, nowadays less so...
WORD UP!
hmm, sorry my bad, she wasnt wordgirl, she was.. .the mother I think?
but still. She fights crime with spelling! How awesome?
would only be better if it was called MathGirl.

She was also Karen the computer on Spongebob Squarepants
That is cool

8:42 PM
and her most famous part - Nurse Crazy to your Doktor Mayhem? ;-)

@RoryAlsop Nice

@AviD I used to fancy her back then - late eighties/early nineties

well, she is an attractive lady. And clearly talented.

@AviD We used to be in Improv - I dropped out and did lighting, she was utterly hilarious on stage

and how do you respond to all the rumours?
;-)

8:47 PM
Poker face

maaan, looks like my personal level of creepiness is at a relative high today. Dont mind me, I'm just too hungry for brain activity - including restraint - and yet otherwise occupied with 3 different projects that need to be finished tonight.

@AviD I grin slightly overenthusiastically, for just that fraction of a second too long :-)

hehe

9:08 PM
@RoryAlsop Wait, aren't your kids centenarians by now? What're they gonna do, gum the abductors to death?

jrg
@RoryAlsop what the heck...
that guy is weird. (travel room...)

Do you guys think that some linux-based computing unit plugged directly into the internet could become part of some botnet (or otherwise hijacked)?

@jrg :O
@DavidFreitag Yes

I say "Computing Unit" and not computer, because i'm designing some gadgets using an ARM based chip that will be running the linux kernel.

jrg
@DavidFreitag anything connected to the internet can become that.

9:15 PM
@jrg :O :O :O
@jrg You look very different in the new pic.

jrg
yeah, i'm about a year and a half older.
that's the main difference.

I figured that was going to be the consensus. Any ideas on how to secure something against hijacking with barely any brains?
Well i shouldn't say barely any brains. They will be more powerful than as raspberry pi.

@DavidFreitag Regular update/patching & strong passwords (if any)

@DavidFreitag reduce the attack surface (don't install anything you don't need, restrict open ports as much as possible), patch regularly, have good passwords :)

@DavidFreitag Oh, and it doesn't hurt to choose non-default ports for stuff like SSH

9:20 PM
Well, for the most part these things won't have anything but the necessary firmware. I just don't want to be selling potentially insecure instruments to customers.

@RoryMcCune Nice! Turns out I know something

The EPA kinda looks down on their instruments being turned int DOSing Botnets =/

@DavidFreitag Everything is potentially insecure. You just try to make it as less insecure as possible.

@Adnan heh well your point accrual would indicate that :)
@DavidFreitag if you look at stuff that gets turned into botnets (like the stuff that got compromised for the Internet scanning project last year) it almost always seems to be default/easily guessable creds, or really old internet facing daemons with unpatched issues

Oh, great. Excel is being crushed under the weight of my attempts to use it as a database once again.

9:23 PM
The issue is that these instruments are generally in remote sites connected to some network, we are trying to get our stuff connected to the internet so they are way more easily accessible. The issues with that are fairly obvious..
We will be using internet access as a sot of ota firmware upgrade as well as api access to data. I suppose that process should be authenticated somehow.

@Iszi it's just trying to save you from yourself. You should know by now that the correct option for any database requirement is MongoDB!

How lightweight is MongoDB?

@DavidFreitag everything you need to know about why to use MongoDB youtube.com/watch?v=b2F-DItXtZs

@DavidFreitag You're no relation to Amanda by chance, are you?

@Iszi Not that i know of. My family is pretty huge though.

9:32 PM
Tip: Always check for duplicates in your data, when you can't stand to have them, especially when you least expect them.

@RoryMcCune This video is freaking hysterical.

9:52 PM
> Impotence mismatch :))

@RoryMcCune I can't stop laughing

or "pipe your data to /dev/null" ROFL

@TildalWave Holy crap! Watch the other episodes.

@Adnan Oh I watched these videos first time they were posted here (or maybe some other chat, but I doubt it)... about 2 months ago? I still laughed out loud tho, it's hilarious... cow farts smell like roses because I don't have to take part in this moronic conversation (not direct transcript, just out of memory)

@rorym - utterly brilliant

10:08 PM
@Adnan There used to be some solid gold chat transcript about some douchebag claiming there's no benefits to using indexes, relationships,... in databases and why don't we just repeat all relevant info in each table instead of using lookups and stuff... about 10 years ago? It was the first of such posts that blew my mind out. I'll try to find it.

@TildalWave The last bit of the node.js video is amazing

@RoryMcCune I seem to remember you using Prezi, correct?
can you run the prezi offline, even in the free package?

thats not free....

@AviD oh... well flag my post as spam then :P :))
sorry

10:23 PM
I think thats for the editing software, and you can edit online and view offline in the free package...
I've just started playing around with it for a bit, I have a speech to give tomorrow.
Its... complex.
say what you will about powerpoint, its brain dead simple to build up a deck in no time flat.
Of course, making a good powerpoint is something else altogether.
whoa. @RoryMcCune Prezi's canvas is effectively infinite???
I guess it makes sense, but zooming in or out a tremendous amount, with no noticable difference (absent content), is pretty mindblowing.
especially when you compare it to e.g. zooming on google maps...

morning
@RoryMcCune nice

no

@AviD no :p?

not really...
ooo found a big downside, they don't support Hebrew. :-(

@AviD those racist bastards!

10:31 PM
@LucasKauffman yeah!
aww hell, cmon we all know hebrew is a bitch to support.

@LucasKauffman Morning

its the right-to-left, more than anything, but its also the font.

@AviD do they support arabic?

@LucasKauffman dont know, but I assume not.

@AviD Have you worked as developer before?

10:36 PM
@Adnan 'course, I'm not a monkey. ;-)

@AviD Have you made a website to a local business and they wanted to support Hebrew and English?

@AviD do you develop in hebrew?

yeah, I started as a dev, and shifted slowly through developing security systems, then to securing other systems, then to consulting on any application/software security.

@AviD SOMEBODY UNDERSTANDS!!!!

still a dev at heart, though. and sometimes in my free time.

10:37 PM
Right-to-left stuff are a PAAAAIN!
A pain I tell you!

@Adnan not quite, but yeah I've been through that.

I wonder how you write python in hebrew or arabic
do you start on the right and indent to the left?

@LucasKauffman nooooo. And I slap any developer I find that likes tranliterated comments, variable names, etc.

@Lucas an SO question..

we had to hire an expensive turkish translator once, for this.

10:38 PM
I'll find it
@AviD But still, its LTR

@LucasKauffman hehe, no its always in english, with english letters, in english words and language.
some smartass coders like transliterating though, to make things "simpler".

Q: Handle arabic string in PHP with Eclipse

Mathieu ImbertI am currently working on the localization of a website, which was first in english only. A third party company did the translations, and provided us with an excel file with the translations. Which I successfully converted to a PHP array that I can use in my views. I'm using Eclipse for Windows t...

Oh, good times!
Oh, try to write something in Skype or Facebook (or pretty much anywhere) with mixed Arabic/Hebrew and English in the same line

I used to work on a data-intensive product, that had to be localized completley. Even have the grid columns go RTL.
so we had to abstract grid columns...

@AviD I'm sorry for your loss.

indirect indices.
still have trauma from this.

10:42 PM
I'm pretty sure you killed one of your coworkers in the end.

haha, did get close...

@Adnan You know what? I honestly don't care... I have my own web framework written with patience and care throughout the last decade or more in a "not cool" language, loads as RTC "server" (I know, wacky but works great - i.e. better than what otherwise plugs into Apache/IIS), has own highly optimized memory manager, and even if I use Access database throws out 10+ complex query pages in under 100ms on a regular office use desktop computer with HDDs and 512MB memory. How cool is that? :P

well, some of them were russian.... ;-)
@TildalWave oooo, can I pentest that for you....? ;-)

@AviD That's what he said :(

so, anyone with experience on Prezi? Whats the quickest / simplest way to put together a first, basic simple prezi?

10:45 PM
@AviD You can do my page, but I know where the holes are already ;) I'm mostly using it for testing my own code, not as a complete package in any way... and I'm lazy for my own stuff of course

@AviD think watching a youtube how to is the quickest

@LucasKauffman watched it, didnt really show "How to".
maybe I'll look for some more...

@TildalWave Well it sounds very cool, but complicated at the same time.

@Adnan It's a proper framework, not complicated at all for most stuff... it has a built in interpreter for a few lingua, if that helps it can be switched on, but I mostly don't need that fancy stuff so I keep it switched off and code directly in its modules

@AviD I just did it the same way I prep for a normal presentation. Mind map - then use the top terms from my mind map as the prezi branches

10:52 PM
@RoryAlsop oh sure. I meant the technical aspect of building the visual.

@AviD och, jist shoogle them aboot. It disnae matter that much

@RoryAlsop lol, I can just almost understand this...

if you read it with Sean Connery's voice, it does make sense

Or @RoryM's voice. Much thicker than @SeanC.

@Adnan The coolest stuff in it is what I started working on when I came here... it's not so cool in the technical sense, but to me it surpases anything from before by light years. The trick is retaining performance, but so far I'm managing... e.g. I'm running at the moment 16.764 built-in WAF filters and rules, performance hit is ~ 28ms with FCrDNS lookups enabled for IPv4 clients (I have it switched off for IPv6 clients, still working on optimizing that part)

11:20 PM
@TildalWave Yup, the only thing I understood from that was IPv4

@RoryAlsop how do you decide where to put the next frame? assuming its not necessarily a drill-down, just sequential, but of course you want the visual effect to be a positive and not vertigo... or boring.

@Adnan hehehe good, that means it's pretty kühl :)

@Lamia Such a peculiar name.

In ancient Greek mythology, Lamia (Greek: Λάμια) was a beautiful queen of Libya who became a child-eating daemon. Aristophanes claimed her name derived from the Greek word for gullet (λαιμός; laimos), referring to her habit of devouring children. In the myth, Lamia is a mistress of the god Zeus, causing Zeus' jealous wife, Hera, to kill all of Lamia's children (except for Scylla, who is herself cursed) and transform her into a monster that hunts and devours the children of others. Another version has Hera merely stealing away all of Lamia's children and it being Lamia herself, losing he...

@TildalWave WOW! You can Google and find stuff on Wikipedia?! I must learn that!

11:23 PM
tho it could be anything else really, and just a coincidence
@Adnan damn, busted! :(

@TildalWave According to that person's profile, they live in Saudi Arabia
which means the name is the Arabic name Lamia'

I still kinda like this onebox thingy in chats... or is it unibox? :}

Which means "the brunette with full lips".
A common trait in Saudi women

@Adnan interesting, I can think of another quite similar word for "full lips", you only have to change a single letter in it
@Adnan I only know a few women of Saudi origins and yes they all seem to be like that, but I never really thought much of it... thought it's coincidence
one incredibly cute one among them too

@Simon Watched the latest Dexter episode yet?
@TildalWave It's not coincidence, it's a conspiracy!

11:39 PM
I'm back fuckers!

LOL
@Griffin back from where?

@Griffin We don't use that language around here.
2

@Ada
@Adnan .... Yes we do.
@TildalWave Discovering my inner being.

@Griffin that sounds painful :)

@TildalWave It sounded more like drugs to me but idk.
I never really lefft .... I was just not paying attention

11:43 PM
@Griffin So, shameless self-plugging?

@Adnan I'm not sure what you're saying but okay.

@Griffin Oh I'm sure you're sure.

@Adnan I'm not so sure you're sure that I'm sure.
