अन्य वेदों की अपेक्षा ऋग्वेद में मन्त्र-संख्या अधिक है, फिर भी इसका शाखा-विस्तार यजुर्वेद और सामवेद की अपेक्षा कम है। इसका कारण यह है कि ऋग्वेद में देवताओं के स्तुति रूप मन्त्रों का भण्डार है। स्तुति-वाक्यों की अपेक्षा कर्मप्रयोग की शैली में भिन्नता होनी स्वाभाविक है। अत: ऋग्वेद की अपेक्षा यजुर्वेद की शाखाएँ अधिक हैं। गायन-शैली की शाखाओं का सर्वाधिक होना आश्चर्यजनक नहीं है। अत: सामवेद की 1000 शाखाएँ बतायी गयी हैं। continue...

फलत: कोई भी वेद शाखा-विस्तार के कारण एक-दूसरे से उपयोगिता, श्रद्धा एवं महत्त्व में कम-ज़्यादा नहीं है। चारों का महत्त्व समान है। उपर्युक्त 1,131 शाखाओं में से वर्तमान में केवल 12 शाखाएँ ही मूल ग्रन्थों में उपलब्ध हैं।
