1:36 AM
Honestly
You need to see this

1 hour later…
2:46 AM
@MechMK1 I watched it. It was very good.

3:41 AM
Speaking of "People at SE don't use SE" being memeworthy, and probably nearly part of C... am I correct that Matrix.org's crew is the only major (YCombinator level) attempt at the primary employees/programmers writing by _chat_ openly/publicly nearly from their beginning in ~2014? I mean you can tell Stacks staff are not here and neither is @zuck in a public chat room 24/7/365, is Matrix.org the first 24/7/365 public chat office room, with the CEO who writes the blog in main room active?:∫

4:21 AM
I mean I do not count weird Discord and FB Group Chats (and we all know Quora mod chat logs are a pandoras box), which, good luck proving that... citing a chat is special to specify. Only Matrix and StackExchange give public archivable transcripts with timestamps for proof, that is newsworthy?

@prosody-GabeVereableContext Matrix is well - very much people solving a problem that annoyed them

2 hours later…
6:01 AM
chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/151 is better integration (profiles, search, individual message permalinks) than view.matrix.org/room/!OGEhHVWSdvArJzumhm:matrix.org currently. <3 Good problem to be bothered by, but small team (@matthew:matrix.org wrote "E_NEED_MORE_PEOPLE" in the pub room, good variable usage :), takes time. Starting a specification from scratch (where is gov funding, I want Presidents on secure PUBLIC chat too), that must annoy the CEO-Dev Matthew deeply.

2 hours later…
7:45 AM
I see /usr/bin/at in linpeas' SUID/SGID sections quite often but never managed to exploit it. I've followed GTFObin's echo "/bin/sh <$(tty) >$(tty) 2>$(tty)" | at now; tail -f /dev/null but that doesn't give me a shell as the owner either. When cat at actually be used?

2 hours later…
10:13 AM
@prosody-GabeVereableContext I don't necessarily mean that company-internal stuff needs to be publicly visible.
But I believe that it's fair to assume that most people, who work for SE, have some form of interest in at least one topic, for which there exists a SE site
Cooking, parenting, cycling, going outdoors, TTRPGs, Board games, Chess, Literature, a foreign language, etc.....
Hell, a shit ton of people here in my company are into videogames. A lot of pre-meeting activity is talking about which games people have played recently
You would think that a tech-focussed company would have at least some people interested in videogames to some degree
Hell, if my employer would offer a public forum/QA site about firearms, I'd be active as fuck there

5 hours later…
3:16 PM
Sakurai mentioned that he purposefully dumbed down the movement system in SSBB in order to "level the playing field between beginners and more advanced players". It was literally the worst possible thing to do, and it's the reason SSBB is not nearly as popular as SSBM.
I, a filthy casual when it comes to fighting games, can enjoy Melee for what it is. I don't need to compete at the highest level in order to have fun. And if I tried, I'd get demolished.
And I would wager that if I played SSBB for a year, and some melee god, who never played SSBB in his life, would challenge me, he would still wipe the floor with me every damn time.

@MechMK1 SE used to be very dogfoody and hire people from inside the community by preference

What ended up happening was literally the worst of both worlds. High-level players found SSBB severely restricting, while casuals could not care less at all, but were still at the mercy of mechanics like tripping, etc...
@JourneymanGeek Yeah, used to be
The days of SE being a company focussed on making a good QA site are long gone
SE, Inc. is here now
And it's all about maximizing profits

@MechMK1 tbh, the damage was done quite a few years before

You seem to allude to a specific event

@MechMK1 ooh, more a certain attitude

3:20 PM
Such as?

SO first, because careers was important
then the tail wagged the dog
then careers lost money and they started cutting a lot of dev, engineering and CM resources
all of whom knew the network intimately

Did anyone ever actually use Careers?

I always felt it was way too US-centric
Seems a running theme with SE

3:22 PM
It reminds me of this email

My latest rejection was cause they were hiring in the US or UK only
the one before that was cause I lacked experience

"Hello Dr. Kim Sung, I've been very impressed with your current position as Head of the Department of Microbiology at Whatever University. We here at Joe's Grill and Bar think we have a great position for you!"
The joys of linkedin
I've gotten all the jobs I wanted, except for one, which was an internship at a company doing forensics
And probably because I was autistic as fuck :D

oh yup
All my jobs but one have been through people / orgs I know or have worked with

But hey, I learned to deal with conceal my autism better

3:42 PM
after 4 attempts tho, despite some people still being optimistic...
I don't think y'all will be seeing me as an SE employee :D

You still want to be an employee?

\o/
Shockingly, my current job sucks that badly

Ah, okay. That's a valid reason

+ I spend a lot of tme here anyway, might as well get paid
+ its less me getting hired as the next qualified person who happens to live in the 'wrong' place
But if things changed, and the pay was fine. why not? A job's a job, and their money is as good as anyone elses.

@JourneymanGeek They already gave you a hat... what more do you want?

3:50 PM
lol
Money is always good!
I'm 6 months away from being able to afford my apartment, and there's this absolutely darling westie I probably can't afford the time or money

I wouldn't want to work for SE, no matter what they paid me
I'd rather dip my nuts into sulphuric acid

@MechMK1 well - that's precisely why they need people who know the community, and can bridge the gap

Then I am sure the community will be pleased to know I won't work for SE
Imagine me doing any sort of community work

Holy shit, that would suck so badly :D

3:55 PM
I've been a moderator some place or another, on and off for almost 20 years

"The layout on mobile is wrong"
"Did you try enable the FitMA option?"
"FitMA"
"Fit ma balls into ya jaw lmao gottem"

See?

tbh, have you looked at meta today?

not yet

3:56 PM
I wouldn't mind working at SE for the right price. but I wouldn't work for Facebook

new redesign went badly
:D

I'm sure the new layout is being very positively received by the community
The funniest fuckig thing is when they said we could have beta tested it on /greatest-hits
And everyone was like "I've been here for over a decade. What the fuck is greatest hits?"
Now I want to append /ligma on every url and api call just to see if maybe some hidden site pops up

lol
Everyone hates it

> Most of the reported bugs have been squashed. We're currently gathering together all the discussion and feature-request feedback items to decide how we want to alter the design. Thank you everyone for your feedback.

tbh, if it did, it would probably the sort of thing Nick will do

4:00 PM
@JourneymanGeek I kinda feel bad for the person who posted it. They must've been thinking "Ok, we're finally taking feedback from the meta folks and things seem to be going good. This announcement has like a +60 score. Nobody is screaming on us." And then they roll out the change and BOOM! Score drops to -100 in like ten minutes

Simple:
Stop making things worse with everything you do.

@nobody Its... pretty bad

It's as if a socially awkward guy joins a party, feels like "Wow, this is going pretty well" and then for no reason at all pulls down his pants and starts shitting on the floor yelling "LOOK AT ME MORTY, I'M PICKLE RIIIICK" and then wonders why people don't invite him to parties
Like, the fault isn't the attendants being toxic

There are literally people on meta who do mm level grids and complain about things being non aligned

And?

4:01 PM
@MechMK1 so basically there's 3 reactions to this

From the update, it sounds like reverting entirely is not on the table

@nobody design team have to justify their paychecks... if they do nothing, management asks why the site have the same design for 3 months...

"It sucks"
"It fucking sucks"
"Kill yourself"

That's my guess

But they talk so diplomatically with these things that it's hard to tell

@MechMK1 so.. ire pretty obvious that things lke right justified meta data would be an issue
@FireQuacker updating is ... going to happen

4:02 PM
Yeah well it better does

so they spend an year on this redesign even if there was nothing wrong with the old one

This layout is retarded

@ThoriumBR I think a good chunk of the work was stacks

Whoever conceptualized it should definitely spend more time on User Experience

Just stare at the design for 8 hours a day
if your eyes don't start bleeding after 2 days, its fine

4:03 PM
@ThoriumBR Yeah, I wish they would try redisgning something that needs redesign

@nobody @ThoriumBR there's a broader problem

I have a term for these kinds of UX's
"SUX"

basically they did nothing for 5-6 years

Suicide-inducing User Experience

then you have sweeping changes that ignore the people who actually use it

4:04 PM
Closing a question as dupe on mobile is broken
And has been for ages
When you select the dupe target, you have to scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN

@JourneymanGeek ...and we're back to "they should hire more people from the community"

Past the question and EVERY SINGLE ANSWER
But no, let's make the score smaller
I can't help but feel that this is politically motivated
"There are no bad questions" - "Question scores promote inequality"
The problem is the long tail
I genuinely mean it
Only a tiny fraction of daily traffic comes from "value-contributing users"
The vast majority from people who "just want a solution to their problem"
And SE ignores the former and focusses on the latter
Which makes sense from a business point of view, but not from a community point of view

@MechMK1 a new user won't care. Title's important. They... shrunk that

I can't even tell what the design goal was
So given that, I presume it's some company-internal goal like making development easier or such
Nothing of value for end users

@MechMK1 correct

4:10 PM
Neither for VGUs nor anyone else

essentially moving to stacks and updating outdated components

Stacks?

@MechMK1 new framework for front end styff

4:13 PM
You know.....

@MechMK1 moving to stacks is a long term 'good'

If you shift a successful product to your new frontend platform and the reaction of everyone is "What the fuck is this?! Are you insane?!" then maybe...that doesn't bode so well for the future

BUT the way its being done seems to involve a lot of shooting in the foot it seems
@MechMK1 there's nothing wrong with the front end platform

To quote the Prodigy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uVefPPr69NU
Well, we'll see

4:26 PM
is everyone smoking crack on HNQ?

@MechMK1 I don't see anything...

It always happens when one of my questions or answers reaches HNQ
Tons of people coming out of the woodwork with the weirdest, not even related comments
Like, the recent question about "Is it safe to run a VM on a corrupted host?"
Obviously, no, it's not
Some dude comments on my answer "Google guest-to-host escapes"
Like, bro, that's not even the topic of the question

Oh, that sort of crap. It's always happening
I once got a guy claiming he could break aes-256 encryption using office macros....

Ah yes, the "No crypto is safe because brute force exists" argument

No, it wasn't even brute force

4:32 PM
I used to just to encrypt a random message with a random AES-256 key and say "Good luck brute forcing it"
In every other case:

Just see this tutorial, it will break the encryption in under a minute.

PoC || gtfo

@MechMK1 my last HNQ answer was...

Oh?

@MechMK1 basically a hardware ID question where I got the hardware wrong, someone found it on ebay in the comments, I found the manual....
It was hardly interesting
6
Q: What is this Nokia networking device?

mLstudent33It has an ethernet cable from my modem. It also has a very thin wire and what looks like an HDMI cable stuck in it. The modem has an ethernet WAN cable connecting it to the wall WAN socket. All this stuff is next to the TV and my roommate mentioned they have the box to record shows. The problem...

tho its super wierd that someone dosen't know their modem

4:38 PM
Hmmm... SE got any plans for fixing the HNQ algorithm?

No!, don't fix it
I'm the king of HNQ on Security! Don#t take this away from me
Its the only thing in my life I got going for me

You'll stay the king even with an improved algorithm.

I am here trying to figure out why I never had a question on the HNQ, and then I realize I never asked anything...

You ascended

4:39 PM
He, who has all the knowledge, need not ask his peers.

I have a friend that knows everything, so I ask him instead... you guys must have heard of him... Mr Google...

THE NOTORIOUS GOOG

@ThoriumBR Yeah, I've known him too. Except, a couple of times, he didn't know the answer.

@ThoriumBR google is the reason I have an easier/better time IDing plants than my mom, who is a botanist

So I had to ask.

4:42 PM
fair... in my field, when Google does not know the answer, I open a support case...

To be fair, it's probably the reason why I prefer asking "softer" questions, since hard questions are usually answerable by google.
As someone once said "The middle between opinion and fact is expertise"

Q: Why was my question edited by somebody random without being aware of the actual case?

neo00Forgive to write it as a question as I find no way to edit my own earlier question. I find this very disrespectful to have my question blocked off from my own editing, by replacing it with some useless question that I would never even ask on this stackexchange. My question was changed to: Does go...

Huh???

6:53 PM
Somebody couldn't find meta

I still don't get the question

It's possible that they asked another question that got merged into the older question.
I'm not sure if that shows up in the timeline or not

You can't "merge" questions as far as I know, only dupe-close them

48
Q: What is a "merged" question?

gerritQuestions can be merged into other questions. What is a merged question? When should questions be merged? Who can merge questions? How do I request it? What happens to merged posts? Anything else I should know about merged questions? Return to FAQ index

@MechMK1 It has to be done by moderators

>til

6:57 PM
But I wouldn't expect Schroeder to merge unless he was really, really sure
My best hypothesis is that the user just got the tabs confused or something

I've seen so many schizos recently, who literally lose grasp of reality

Pretty sure no merges happened, because it would have shown up in the other question's history, so yup. Probably user error.

@FireQuacker Yeah, it does show up.

7:39 PM
I don't think it was a merged question.... looks like OP and the other guy asked similar questions in quick succession, and OP thought the other guy vandalized his question

Quick succession? That other guy's question is seven years old. Its from an age when schroeder wasn't a mod.
@MechMK1 Man, I just noticed 15 mins into the video that its 2 hours long.

@nobody so I misread the logs...

7:59 PM
Big shrug from me. No clue how Neo even stumbled across Tatatatata's question. There is no relation.

8:34 PM
@nobody Worth every second
Well, my guess is still schizophrenia

the original question was .... interesting.

8:58 PM
schizophrenia answers many, many questions that are posted on SE
