@nobody Either configure your browser to always use https, or install the extension "HTTPS Everywhere" by EFF (and turn it on).

A: Should 2-factor authentication using SMS be deprecated?

Guillaume DonnadieuI like 2FA, and I believe it is the future of authentication technology. For me, SMS technology is way more secure than everything else that is internet-based. Don't know if this answers the question, but combination of both techs appears really secure to me.

What the fuck is this?
@nobody If I saw an anonymous note on my desktop saying "Keep up the good work" I would feel rather uneasy instead of motivated
@nobody Soon, Chrome will use HTTPS as the default.

Q: Why is SHA3 more secure than SHA2?

Arturo RomanWhy are SHA3 algorithms considered more secure than their SHA2 counterparts? Surely in part, it is due to their resistance to length extension attacks. But specifically, when considering collision resistance they have the same O(n) attack times. Is it because they are more resistant to preimage a...

I love this question, as it demonstrates "Asserting a fact through a question". Asking "Why is X more secure than Y?" presupposes "X is more secure than Y", without ever directly making that claim.
You can see this a lot in the political sphere, with questions like "How can we counter income inequality between men and women?"
@ThomasWard Hey, good to see you here again. How've you been?

@MechMK1 hisses evilly until he finishes his caffeine elixir
in dire need of caffeine this morning

@ThomasWard Oh, you're still going the old-fashioned route?
I replaced two of my ribs with caffeine dispensers

but otherwise the normal, chaotic evil self i am
yeah i know what that's like
but they won't let me get caffeine powder or caffeine pills anymore so

I've played entirely too much Rimworld

coffee, coffee drinks, and Vanilla Coca-Cola in that order to make sure my sugar and caffeine get high enough

1:48 PM
Red Bull for me
What can I say, I'm a patriot

yeah i can't handle red bull or energy drinks
it totally screws my stomach

Same for me, but that doesn't matter

heh
it does for me :P

That's the advantage of not caring
I've never felt so zen before

@MechMK1 redbull is thai :D

1:57 PM
Red Bull is an energy drink sold by Red Bull GmbH, an Austrian company created in 1987. It is the best-selling energy drink in the world, with 7.9 billion cans sold in a year (as of 2020).Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz was inspired by an existing energy drink, Krating Daeng, which was introduced in 1981 in Thailand by Chaleo Yoovidhya. He modified the ingredients to suit the tastes of Westerners, and in partnership with Chaleo, founded Red Bull GmbH in 1984 in Fuschl am See, Austria. In Thai, daeng means red, and a krating (known in English as a gaur or Indian bison) is a large species...
Austrian company selling a variation of a recipe of a thai drink
Fun Fact: Red Bull are one of the few companies which outsourced their core business
Wait am I the only non-mod here?

you're surrounded
it's like you're looking at the night sky with all these diamonds around you

SO IT HAS COME TO THIS...

@JourneymanGeek Also I can't thank you enough for recommending Jellyfin, it's so good

@MechMK1 glad it was of use :D

I only have one issue with it
Just one
I can't upload media directly via the web interface

2:02 PM
Ah...

I have to use SFTP and then SSH on the server

My problem was stranger - it wouldn't let me use a secondary drive for storage

That is indeed strange

I'm playing with proxmox at the moment and a future (money/time) permitting plan is to consolidate a buncha things into VMs, including that

Sounds like a plan
Also, I decided against using RAID1 for backup

2:04 PM
Ah, most of my linux boxen are ZFS
so in theory I can just export my whole filesystem and do other neat things

I'm really not sure what to use
So my setup is as follows:
I have a 1 TB SSD with the OS and a bunch of "fast" files (caches, etc.) and two 8 TB HDDs for media storage
One is the "Primary", one is the "Backup"

@MechMK1 knocks on your door FBI OPEN UP! blasts open the door with explosive entry and raids your home

And currently, once a week, I remount my primary as read-only, then make a squashfs copy of the whole file system and then remount the primary as RW again
@ThomasWard Release the Claymore Roomba

Yeaaah, ZFS man

Got a ZFS for Dummies guide handy?

2:09 PM
does raid, does snapshots, does snapshot exports, and is an absolute pleasure doing it
ooh

Like, I never used it
My primary drive is just an EXT4

Is a great primer
Ubuntu's got the best support for it
openzfs.github.io/openzfs-docs/Getting%20Started/Ubuntu/… is the setup I used on my ZFS boxen. Its a bit annoying you need to start it from the desktop install for now

Honestly, that sounds way too large-scale for my home server :D

ah, but when I want to add a disk?
One command
Backups? One command...

Yeah, but I feel like I'd mess this up
Just a hunch

2:15 PM
Well I mess up a lot... and I did it

How many physical discs?

I just spent the afternoon working up debian didn't like the GPU I didn't really need...
only 1, then I quickly added another as a second mount

Just cli? Or some GUI tool?

future build is probably going to be 2-4 disks
CLI, but very 'elegant' CLI

I might look into this in the future
But for now it feels way too advanced

2:17 PM
If ubuntu server has it, I'd be a happy camper :)

No idea what the latest ubuntu server supports
Guess I'll find out
I'm just really pissed that I bought two HDDs like half a year ago and only tested one
Just noticed that the second one is dead

I don't think its supported without all those steps yet, its the installer needing work
ow

Yeah, big oof
200€ down the drain

o0
Normal prices or crypto inflated prices?

Let me see
200€ for one 8TB disk

2:21 PM
that's about right nowadays

sounds normalish

Actually 170€ back then
So some inflation occurred

@MechMK1 pfft, Claymore Roomba. That's weak. UNLEASH THE BRIEFCASE NUKE ROOMBA! runs and hides in the bunker

:D

It feels strange that the "FBI, open up!" meme shows you have absolutely no time to open up the door before they blast it to bits...

2:23 PM
well its a meme not real life xD

gotcha!

@MechMK1 looks like you're not alone anymore :p

Reminds me of something

I am an ex-caffeine addict... I haven't drank coffee for like 20 years now

2:24 PM
I used to live on a South American coffee farm, so we had real coffee, not that thing that you buy on the market
and I used to drink A LOT of coffee... like 1 liter in 4 hours after lunch

that's quite a lot
sips his single cup of coffee

I decided to quit overnight, never drank anything anymore... the next 2 weeks were hell

I cut back to one mug a day ._.

my concentration was atrocious, I could not do even basic math by head, it was terrible
but I got used to not have caffeine anymore, and it was fine one month later
I use to say that caffeine is like overclocking your neurons, and overclock is not a good long term soluton

Completely unrelated, but one of the most underrated cli tools is rename
basically mv + regex
rename 's/^(\d+)\ -/$1/g' *

2:32 PM
rename is nice! I read a good blog post about it a couple years ago... sadly I never learned properly how to use it... and I usually end up bash scripting...

Renames 01 - Track.flac to 01 Track.flac
@ThoriumBR If you know how sed works, you know how rename works
You can always use the -n flag to see what rename would do

@MechMK1 imagine how depressing to put on Linkedin: "member of the Dog Killing Team"...

@ThoriumBR "Professional Government Dog Killer 2005 - 2013"

@MechMK1 so I guess I read the "Advanced Rename" blog post...

Anyways, time for me to go
Have a good one, lads

2:38 PM
you too

@ThoriumBR yeah it is in a large quantity. but for some people the single cup of coffee a day helps with focus - especially if you'ive had an ADHD diagnosis in the past.

1 hour later…
3:52 PM
@ThoriumBR I used to work in Germany, and the office had a real coffee grinder and machine within arms reach of my desk. So I ended up drinking about that much. So much that when I got back to the UK I was having heart palpitations and quit for quite a few years. Now I'm back to one or two coffees a day
Unless I'm on tour, then I live on Red Bull or Monster - which hurts afterwards

one of my friends got a serious call from his doctor... one of his routine medical exams turned back and his liver was kinda dissolving... he either had ongoing liver cancer or too much red bull...
so he had a battery of new exams, and his doctor forbid him to drinking redbull for life... he drank to much that the taurine and caffeine and other components were poisoning him
but he basically only drank redbull, no coffee, no juice, no water, nothing...
fun fact: coffee on the market, even coffee beans, aren't pure... the roasting company (whatever it's called) mixes coffee from different plantations to get an even mix, kinda like mass-market wine. so it cannot be as strong as farm coffee.
well, that depends on the farm, some ones can produce terrible weak coffee too
our farm had some areas of land with great coffee, and some with average and bellow average ones too

4:29 PM
i had German packaged coffee once, someone was kind enough to international ship me some and that was cool but it took an eon to get through Customs. Was tasty!
but yeah the 'mixed beans' stuff is never pure coffee
but even then it's still balanced
(which is what I need xD0

5:23 PM
@ThoriumBR im not sure I could survive that long
@MechMK1 every time I even consider reaching for sed I realize what I am doing should prob be done in a real language
