TIL "If the file /sys/firmware/acpi/tables/MSDM exists (it's read-only to root), there's probably a Windows key embedded in there"
if your Linux installation have that file, you have a Windows license too

A: VPN - Tor: can VPN provider see the data?

forestBetween your Tor client and the guard node, the communications are encrypted with three layers of AES128. The first layer is a key shared between you and the guard node. The second layer is a key shared between you and the middle node. The third layer is a key shared between you and the exit node...

forest does some "simple math" here, but I'm dumb enough to not undertand. Can someone explain where the 2^128*2 comes from and how it equals 2^130?

1 hour later…
9:44 AM
I would like to have an explanation too... I believe 2^128*4 would be 2^130...

2 hours later…
11:24 AM
@nobody (2^128)*2 = 2^129
It's a simple mistake, nothing more

Where does (2^128)*2 come from in the first place?
There are three 128 bit keys
So that's equivalent to a 384 bit key
If you take in account the meet in the middle attack
then its 256 bits

I think that's a question for the sidechannel
I have a weird feeling in my throat. I think I got the coof

coof == cough?

the rona, my dude
With only a 98% chance of survival, I'm as good as dead

RIP

11:38 AM
I can already see the funeral service held in the DMZ
"Here lies MechMK1. He may not always have been the nicest person, and he had some very objectional political views, crude humor and generally lowered the quality of discussion in the DMZ for years... the sentence ends here."

11:52 AM
Atleast you get a funeral service here. I wouldn't even get that.

Makes sense though
No funeral service if nobody dies.

Wait, that means... if I die because of covid, then everybody can stop worrying about covid, because nobody was killed by it

Exactly
Nobody got infected, nobody died. Pandemic over.

whelp! where do I hide?

Luckily, nobody can hide from the virus

12:14 PM
@nobody exponents don't work that way. If you multiply two numbers you add their exponents

Anonymous
Morning.

Anonymous
Afternoon, nevermind.

Anonymous
What is time anyway?

@ConorMancone Isn't that what I did? (2^128)*(2^128)*(2^128)=2^384

@J-- it's 15 past something...

12:18 PM
It is a time

Take 2^3 for example (aka 8). 2*8=16, aka 2^1 * 2^3 = 2^4
When you multiply numbers you add their exponents
(sorry, I am thinking out loud)
Ah yes: so, if you had 2 keys with 128 bits of entropy, this is not the same thing as a single key with 256 bits of entropy
2 keys with 128 bits is "double" a single 128 but key, so you have 2^1 * 2^128 = 2 ^ 129 bits

I knew something like that was going on
But fuck I am so tired

Anonymous
15 past tired.

Anonymous
:D

You could ask me what color the sky was and I'd say "Whatever, green or such"

12:23 PM
@ConorMancone How so? The number of different possible key combinations are still 2^256

(2^128)*(2^128) doesn't mean that you have 2 keys with 128 bits: it would mean that you have 2^128 keys with 2^128 bits!

Anonymous
Today I am bypassing ASLR.

Anonymous
Fun.

@nobody no, a 256 bit key is not just double a 128 but key - it is far, far, far stronger

@ConorMancone Pretty sure you're wrong here. 3DES has 112 bit strength after the meet in the middle attack
If you were right, it would be only 58 bits

12:25 PM
true
fuck, I'm retarded

@MechMK1 your chance of survival is actually only like 99.99%, assuming you are under 60 and not in a high risk category
It's been fun dude, I'll miss you!

Anonymous
That's not what Tom said :D

Anonymous
I would miss Mech dearly, however.

The DMZ would be dead without him

Anonymous
Literally.

Anonymous
12:28 PM
I wouldn't even be bothered to post.

Anonymous
Unless forest was here. Then I might.

@nobody try it with small numbers. I have 2 keys with 4 bits each. That gives me 8 bits of entropy total

Anonymous
No offense to anyone else I'm just...

Anonymous
Lazy.

Anonymous
Anti social.

Anonymous
12:28 PM
Mechs biggest fan.

Anonymous
:D

@ConorMancone Exactly, the bits add up

Anonymous
In other news... I've switched to US keyboard layout forever.

Anonymous
The UK layout is genuinely fucking trash.

12:29 PM
So two keys with 128 bits each is 256 bits of entropy

Other than the enter key

Anonymous
I've tried to convince myself it is good, but it literally requires extra keys on the keyboard.

2^2 * 2^2 = 2^4, which is 16. Wrong answer. 2 * 2^2 = 8, right answer

I love the Uk enter key

Anonymous
Ah yes.

Anonymous
12:29 PM
Me too, Journeyman.

@J-- the thing that bugs me the most about the UK keyboard is the transposition of the @ and ' keys

Anonymous
But other than that... It is terrible.

Anonymous
Oh, I actually like that!

Anonymous
But what I don't like is needing to use alt to type |

Anonymous
I use | a lot.

12:30 PM
@nobody 2 keys with 128 bits is 129 bits of entropy. A 256 but key isn't just 2 128 but keys

ow yeah
that would be a pain for piping

Anonymous
Same goes for \ you know how hard it is to use \ on uk if you have a 60% keyboard?

Anonymous
you need an entire new key on the board!!

Anonymous
stupid design. so im using US :D

12:31 PM
I just downsized to a tenkeyless
from an OC Razer Blackwidow Ultimate/classic that's so old the keys are blue, and the cherry blues are silent linear switches :D

Anonymous
Thing is, a lot of people tell me "just use a bigger keyboard" - but I've almost always had 60s.

Anonymous
Moving from a 60 to an 80 and losing all that desk space is just sad...

@ConorMancone By this logic two keys of 4 bits gives one key of 5 bits
Instead we have one key of 8 bits

Anonymous
Of course there is a method, get a UK designed PCB with a smaller left shift and then you have one extra 1u for a \| key

Anonymous
But meh, us layout is fine anyways

12:33 PM
I use the stock thinkpad t490 keyboard...

@J-- eh, keyboard preferences are personal

or the t430 on the gaming notebook

@ThoriumBR filthy casual :D
(I kid I kid)

stock t430...

Anonymous
I'll be honest Thorium, the reason I got into keyboards was the reason I am interested in other things, I have an obsession with collecting random shit.

Anonymous
12:34 PM
I just like collecting nonsense

Anonymous
But I had to channel it into something more worthwhile so somewhere down that line that was keyboards

Anonymous
else id be buying fucking rocks and shit

I am toying with the idea of upgrading it to the most powerful i7 it supports, change the heat pipe, and a shiny SSD... but it would cost a new notebook
and it needs a new battery too, and shipping batteries are understandingly expensive...

lol
@J-- same keyboard for 10 years

Anonymous
:D to be fair, my previous keyboard I did use for a really long time, few years, I had others I could use but I really liked it.

Anonymous
12:39 PM
Think I am going to build something with a super clicky switch next

Anonymous
I want to do like a hacker themed build with box jades or something

Anonymous
that would be super cool but the key caps i wanted for it all sold through

@nobody I'm having trouble finding you a good reference but note that the brute force times are not double when you go from 128 to 256. They are exponentially higher:

Anonymous
So I am HOPING there are extras when shipping comes

Anonymous
like who doesnt want these, wait.

Anonymous
IM SO MAD i missed it

Anonymous
the metal artisan keycap as well the terminal prompt

Anonymous
SO COOL

@ConorMancone I asked in the Side Channel, lets wait and see the reply

@J-- my pc building is heavily that

Anonymous
12:44 PM
You mean like hacker themed?

me finding an outlet for stuff I want to do

Anonymous
Oh right.

Anonymous
Yeah, I really like building computers too.

If I was in the uk, I'd probably be one of those boffins with a machine shop building stuff like functional mecha

Anonymous
Heh :D

12:56 PM
So I build a PC every 5-6 years
and upgrade it and my random utility boxen in between

Anonymous
What do you do with the old ones?

Anonymous
Just keep the parts?

Anonymous
That's what I do.

Anonymous
I have a bunch of computers and computer stuff laying around because of that. I still have a gtx 660 somewhere :D

Anonymous
But its cool, I like it. Reminds me of when I used to play video games 15 hours+ a day lol

Anonymous
1:07 PM
on my amd fx8350

Anonymous
:D

Anonymous
that thing would be at like 80c constantly it was bonkers

@J-- my mom or dad typically make me throw em out
so I tend to rehome them
my last PC is still around though :D

1:44 PM
@ConorMancone Just 99.99% survival rate? I'm basically a dead man walking

8 hours later…
9:35 PM
Umm... Is it normal for phone apps to not check certificate validity?
