@MechMK1 Did it say I joined the chat yesterday?

Anonymous
Because, you pinged me but I was never here so I am confused.

7:56 AM
@J.J Yes indeed
Sounds like you got hacked bro

@RoryAlsop Hey Rory, I just visited the site to look something up and noticed by chance that schroeder crossed the 100k rep border maybe some days ago
I would post the congratulatory thing on meta, but I think that's your job ;)

12:57 PM
@TomK. That's a good point - I congratulated him outside Stack Exchange, but didn't think about doing that here... Thank you

sure thing
btw the, whole job hunt thing turned out very nicely
I will soon start at Siemens doing Cyber things - which I'm really looking forward to

@TomK. Congrats! I hope it works out well.

1:13 PM
oh thanks. didn't want to fish for congrats. ;) rory gave me a little bit of advice on interviews some loooong time ago, when I finally decided to change jobs
took some time and some twists and turns, but now everything looks great

:) Bad news spreads quickly, so I'm always happy to have good news shared too

:)
there is SOME load of bad news going around
what's going on in georgia? is everything still peaceful there?

I thought it was Minnesota?

there are some protests in other cities in other states that have been escalated
I think Denver most notably

@TomK. Congratulations, I wish you the best in your new job!

Q: Congratulations to Schroeder for hitting 100k

Rory AlsopCongratulations to @Schroeder for hitting 100k! Our 5th 100k-er He not only manages to be the most active moderator on Sec.SE, but also has answered over 1500 questions Well done!

Awww, isn't it lovely that you use my real name here, even though I don't use it anywhere else on Stack Exchange? It's almost as if you purposefully post my personal information without my explicit consent to do so

@MechMK1 If there's information being shared without your consent, you should be able to mod flag to have it deleted, and there's probably also a way to request an employee to censor it so it doesn't even show up for room owners

@FireQuacker I already flagged it, but can't really add more. I just think it's a dick move to do after expressing heartfelt congratulations in an attempt to bury an old grudge
@TomK. I love you too<3

thanks @Someone_Evil
or Unionhawk

2:52 PM
So how about that eBay port scanning thing? Weird, huh?

Folks - let's keep argument out of here okay. Debate is fine, but insults, personal attacks etc will get you suspended

@FireQuacker Yes, though it's probably the brainchild of some weird audit company, asking ebay to ensure their customers don't have malware installed

Just flag offensive comments so mods can deal with them. Don't respond with insults back
@TomK. That's awesome. Congrats. I worked for them nearly 30 years ago and they were a really good employer

@RoryAlsop Thanks. Good to hear. From the interactions I had with the people in HR and the other cyber folks everything looks pretty amazing.
Everybody well-versed, they have their act together, mature ISMS etc etc

@TomK. What was the interview advice that Rory gave you?

2:57 PM
:54514997 Ignoring the issue of whether or not Mech may be a bigot (because I doubt he cares much what you or I think about him anyway), even if he was why do you feel that gives you an excuse to be rude or insulting?

@FireQuacker Be a cool cat
Nah, I asked him about a pretty special situation, so it's hard to re-use the advice, but to boil it down a little: be yourself and communicate what you expect from the company.

Makes sense
A lot of interviews don't go well when you try to be what you think the company is looking for

@ConorMancone I dunno. Not even sure we have to discuss the issue further as I just ignored him now and it seems to have been cleared (as far as possible) by the mods. But to be honest: I really really liked this place maybe one-two years ago. And a lot has changed in the meantime. I attribute a lot of this change to him.
@FireQuacker: Yeah, additionally you won't be happy at the company when you are only adjusting to their needs

@TomK. Yup
A lot of people don't realize that the interviews are just as much for you to figure out if you want them as it is for them to see if they want you

Anyways, I'll be off for the day! Have a nice day/night/whatever~

3:06 PM
sure. I mean there are times when you really can't choose and you have to take a job, so then other mechanisms come into play

@FireQuacker Absolutely - the last couple of big interviews I have had have been split 50-50 - they interview me, then I interview them

@MechMK1 Okay, see ya. Hope you catch up on that sleep over the weekend.

@TomK. if you see it as an essential stepping stone, you can put up with a lot for short term

@TomK. Note how, while I don't appreciate the way your comments took the chat down a dark alley, I'm able to discuss it with you without resorting to insults. However if the best you can do is ignore a person then that is at least something, so indeed let's move on with our lives...

@RoryAlsop I guess starting out is the hardest. If you have little work experience, it can be hard to find a job, and you don't know how to judge them, anyway.

3:10 PM
@ConorMancone: You seem to have a wider skill set than me. ;)

@RoryAlsop That's true. My last job turned into a dead end after a couple years, and I was not very happy that last year. However I was able to at least use it to get experience with some new skills, and that landed me my current job which I'm very happy about.'
My rule is usually that unless a job is reaching the point where I'd rather jump out a window than go to work, I'll at least give things a few months to see if the situation can be changed or I can at least use it to launch the next "phase" of my career

Okay, I wouldn't go that far

Which part?

I was pretty unhappy with my last job, but I was faaaaar away from jumping ouf a window

Maybe not the best analogy :) Like Rory said though, I'm usually willing to put up with some short term unhappiness, especially if it may work out better in the long term.

3:16 PM
ah, that's what you two mean. I meant: if you have a ton of - for instance - student loan debt, then it probably doesn't matter that much what kind of job you get; you are first and foremost happy that you have a job

@ConorMancone My first career job was okay, but very unstructured, and it paid me less in my pocket than my rent each month, so I slowly got more and more in debt. But it gave me great experience which got me a considerably better job after a couple of years

alrighty, I'll get back to work. this last part was very pleasant ;)

PSA: "fever detection cameras" are basically a scam. They don't work as well as a thermometer, yet cost way way way way more.
If somebody wants to sell them to your company, laugh in their face and save your money.

2 hours later…
5:55 PM
@FireQuacker I recall the UK buying a ton of COVID-19 test kits from china that didn't work
Tons of people see this chrisis as a quick way to make money

$20k per camera, with a camera at every employee entrance, though
That's just... crazy.
(I don't spend much money)

6:09 PM
@FireQuacker Yeah, but the reasons for implementing such things are manifold
Quickly drafted up compliance things that nobody really knows how to execute technically

Thermometers have existed for a long time, though...
Like who ever looked at a camera and thought, "You know, using this thing would be way easier to diagnose people than a thermometer."

Yeah, but stuff like "Companies need to be able to identify employees who show symptoms of COVID-19"
You know, just stuff that sounds good and useful on paper, but is a nightmare to implemtn

See, all the sales pitches will show a bunch of people walking in a building all at once, with the camera just reading off temperatures within seconds

I could see a company falling for a scam like this
Yeah, exactly

But if you look at the documentation, you aren't using the camera properly unless a) everybody stands in the building for 15 minutes first, b) each person comes to the camera one at a time, and c) they stand exactly the correct distance away, for several seconds, with their head at the right angle

6:15 PM
Be glad this stuff doesn't work

Even then, it's going to be accurate to maybe 0.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
If you consider that people don't even start at the same temperature (98.6 Fahrenheit is just an average), then you realize that fevers could start as low as 99 degrees Fahrenheit--which might be a normal temperature for other people
Not to mention that some people are asymptomatic
I guess you have to have some heuristic for compliance. Temperature is... something.
@MechMK1 Stuff like this is why I don't worry overmuch about giant companies or governments turning evil

@FireQuacker You're implying they're not evil already.

I mean, they could cause a lot of problems as side effects, but to be very efficient at evil they would have to be competent, and that's not something that happens often.
Like, I would worry about corrupt individuals abusing their privileges to exact revenge or other bad stuff
Eh, now that I think about it, my argument isn't holding water. The USSR was pretty corrupt and inefficient, and they were still able to do bad stuff on a wide scale. Same with the Nazis.

6:39 PM
To quote myself: "Life is shit, and then you die"
I'm sure someone else said that too. It's not that unique of a thought

@MechMK1 Not true. There's also cheesecake.

The occassional respite makes the journey ahead all the more troublesome.

I can't remember the line right, but I think those two statements came from a movie or webcomic
Maybe Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy?

It's been ages since I read that
But I recall the opening
About how the galaxy was created

He was a very good author
I've only read the first chapter, though
