@GratefulDisciple If the Holy Spirit is empowering any activity (whatever it is) then it is going to be in line with truth and profitable. I have read some dissertations on calvinistic election and reprobation, and recently some catholic treatments of Marion Dogma which I am sure are very scholarly and equally sure are very wrong. Thus the weight of scholarly tradition lends credence to error.
@GratefulDisciple I am not against scholarship (some has blessed me greatly) but I think that many denominations mistake scholarship for giftedness when they require various educational achievements be attained in order to lead a church. Scholarship must be read the same way it is undertaken ... in reliance upon the spirit of God to guide in truth.

@MikeBorden I agree with you. But then HOW do we judiciously select them? I know some Christians who absolutely don't want to use any commentaries and arrive at some wild interpretations that I know is not orthodox.
@MikeBorden Again, I agree with you. But then HOW do we use scholarship in doing theology? Simply appealing to Holy Spirit is quite ambiguous.
My proposal is that each group needs to formalize their way of exegesis and their way of constructing theology so it's easily seen and accountable, not remaining implicit in their commentaries and theology books. This is especially necessary for evangelicals or for anyone claiming to do "Bible alone".
