That is not unreasonable, and is helpful to me to understand. If I can restate what I think I understand into terms of how this plays out practically, some people will see a very defined line between sites like this and the sites whose members espouse a specific religion, but others won't, based (at least partially) on their own religious leanings.
For example, a 'Sola Scriptura' kind of person will be more likely (not guaranteed) to think that a 'why did deity/person do X as shown in verse Y' question would be answerable through the text and in scope, while someone who uses 'Talmud' or 'Tradition' or 'Hadith' might be less likely to think that they can know 'why did deity...' through only on topic texts. Both groups can and do use commentaries and such to show what other people said 'why deity did X'.
Claiming an actual reason and answer to the question is off topic when the 'show your work' evidence is 'the LDS prophet said A' or ‘the Gospel of Mary said B’, but showing that statements such as these inform some people’s understanding of the text is on topic.
On the other hand, when the evidence is ‘Bible verse C in a different part of the Bible said D [stated or unstated presuppositions being that scripture is infallible and non-contradictory]’, claiming an actual reason and answer to the question is on topic. And this is the case regardless of the ‘Truth’ of A, B, or D.
@ScottS If so, that is very understandable, and it would be impossible or worse to draw the line excluding ‘why did deity’ questions. Did I understand correctly? If so, even asking my question may have betrayed more of my personal religious feelings than I intended.
I suppose since I did unintentionally bare my soul a bit here, it would be safe to affirm that, yes, I do think there is worth in studying religious source material, yes, I do believe that I do not understand it as well as I want, and yes, I do believe that there may be at least one other human out there that might assist me in better understanding it. I hope that the persecution will be bearable.
