@rdtsc Were there studies? Do you have first hand experience with gold in seawater? Somehow I have a hard time believing that mere seawater at normal temperatures would corrode away gold. [We're not talking heated aqua regia.]

@misk94555 Gold will corrode very slowly. Platinum, even slower. Recently saw a video on what ever became of the 2M+ tires dumped into the ocean to "rebuild the coral reefs." Tires were bound together with nylon and steel wrap, chain, whatever they could find. After 50 years, none of the ties held (and no coral reef.) Maybe it would have held if gold wire were used.
Maybe they should be forced to re-do the experiment with gold and platinum wire.
Meaning, pull those same tires (not add new ones) and bind them with gold and platinum that they pay for.
