@W5VO Thanks for the vote of confidence.
@W5VO I would be very excited to have some others that are actively helping. I have had no time to do the other things that I would like to.
I am not happy that one person is running on the ticket of, "We should allow people to ask questions about sourcing parts."
:924501, It really was bad, there was a month where daniel was gone, I did not know he was on vacation that I was the only person whom took moderator action.
@reemrevnivek, I am hoping you make it, you do an excellent job of handling the meta site and I think you would do well at that.

12:42 AM
@reemrevnivek @Kortuk i hope both of you make it

12:57 AM
@Kortuk /sigh

@NickT People hope for you also. I hope for you.

?
I meant your thing on IDEs

Honestly, the only issue I have with the election is that we might get a mod that things we should full scale allow shopping advice.
@NickT haha
@NickT Do you see my issue?
This is something that @reemrevnivek at one point had a habit of doing, Just because it could fit does not mean it should
@reemrevnivek, do not take that wrong, you have not done this in a while and in the case of your post on meta I think you have 180ed and are thinking through implications quite well.
I am more then willing to discuss it @NickT

read my comment?

1:16 AM
Yes
You did not flag me in your comment so I would have never known you made it.
The problem sometimes with having 8 millions threads going
I hope this is not the source of you attempting to depose me. <3

lul
So now letting in IDE questions will result in us getting hit by consumer electronics questions?
:P
consumer electronics I'm more than happy to keep well away for a variety of reasons, but I'd think that questions about IDEs that deal with embedded targets would be a strong-suit of our community

@NickT You are missunderstanding
I am using the same logic to apply to other things. I clearly understood that the reason the programming will not come over is because it has a good home
but consumer electronics needs a home, and we are technical
Do you see the train of thought. Just because it needs a home does not mean we should give it one
Answering a large number of questions very specific to IDEs @NickT will never end, especially when you add versions of IDEs. Do you want us to be the go to source for IDE questions also?
@NickT, grabbing my lunch, be back soon to discuss

1:32 AM
@Kortuk like food too much

I am a fat man
be back soon
@NickT, on that note, please do not mistake me, I am purely using things like consumer electronics as an example of where I feel that logic leads and intern an example of the flaw to said logic. It is an opinion, and I am still open to discussion. I was also worried you might vote for me and wanted to seal the deal.

2:05 AM
@NickT And this made me giggle.
@W5VO Along with this.
So people left comments on my nomination, but they left them before voting started, and they were cleared when voting started, so I never saw them.

@Kortuk interesting about the ink cartridge thing that we were talking about earlier: instructables.com/id/…

I wonder what good/bad people had to say
very interesting

seems like a lot of reverse engineering and a bit of trying to make stuff small
it sounds like the job isn't a full time job, just contract based

2:22 AM
hmmm

which makes sense, its not like there are new cartridges all of the time, so a couple weeks here and there when ever a new one comes out

@NickT Some people nitpick
@NickT, I take it you are done for now with our earlier discussion?

No, I just don't see the harm in accepting IDE questions that are specifically relevant to micro programming, I can't imagine it would be a slippery-slope where there would be some huge rash of them
what's the difference between that and coding questions?
@Kortuk oh, make ->

3:38 AM
@NickT I was saying that the question seemed to be a, i have a working IDE, but I was to use it on MAC, how/what do I do to do this?
@NickT Which is a step further away.
@NickT fixed.
@NickT When asking how to accomplish a specific task you can be taught, the IDE questions could be updated infinitely per IDE, per version. you could make the same argument for coding, but I think the same questions twice with coding and a lightly different version of a pic would be closed as duplicate also.
It is messy, but in my mind coding firmware and playing with an IDE are two separate topics.

The thing doesn't even really ask about IDEs specifically

@NickT Sleep well, there is no reason that we have to make a final decision in one day, even one month.

If I understand the voting algorithm properly your first vote carries a weight. If that person is elected it determines how many excess voting points made it. They then take your percentage of the overflow and pass it on to your second vote. rinse and repeat. very interesting. So if you had three distinct thought groups they could all successfully elect one person and not have enough leftover for a second from any as they each elected their first.
very intersting.
Reminds me of the second runner for president getting vice president. Seems like for a bit not much would get done....

Hi All!

@JavaR - Hi!
Are you new here?
That was by Marcus, who hasn't been around since the Chiphacker days. Chiphacker was fun, but I think we should take the good awhile carefully weeding out the bad.
Remember that Marcus, who used to be *the* admin of Chiphacker, was CEO of a hobbyist electronics vendor. That colored the site with a beginner/hobbyist tone, IIRC.
Sorry, that should read @NickT

A: How termination resistors work; what happens if I use lower values?

Peter EnmoreWhy are you looking to lower the resistor value? Lowering the value may cause damage.

@reemrevnivek spam imho
trying to dump resistor = the linked website for SEO or something. too bad there's nofollow on external links from SE sites (afaik)

@NickT - The link over 'resistor' points at the website of the company where this guy works in sales. [See linkedin profile here.](http://www.linkedin.com/pub/peter-enmore/1b/b8/766).
This is blatant spam, but I'm not sure how to proceed. He's a brand new user, so should I edit the question and point him at the relevant policy? Or do we just flag the answer and throw it out?
His profile:
points at the website as well.
OK, I've decided to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, and take the comment/edit route.

@reemrevnivek I sure am new!

@JavaRocky - Good to have you!

I received a card with the chiphacker.com url address on it. It redirected here. I found out that it got migrated!

1:35 PM
Yup, that was a few months ago. We used to be affiliated with littlebird electronics, but we've now joined Stack Exchange (think Stack Overflow) and we've just recently graduated from the beta stage.
This site:

Omg, thats who i bought electronics from...

probably has a lot more to do with that card than Electronics Design.
Yup. The CEO of that company started Chiphacker.com.

I guess LBE got a bad deal loosing it...
Wow so electronis@se is only a few months old?

Well, there was an independent site called electronics.stackexchange with very low traffic. That site, and all its content and users, was deleted. Marcus had the option of moving to an open-source version of the Stack Overflow platform, but chose to give the site to Stack Exchange. Since then, we've more than doubled our user base and even more increased our traffic levels.
You can see some of that history here:
Electronics electronics.stackexchange.com

Launched Q&A site for electronics hardware hacking enthusiasts - topics that include electronics, physical computing, and even those working with an Arduino.

1:42 PM
Thanks! It was confusing for a while around that time...

I remember the old electronics.. i really liked that one.. it had very low traffic but.

@reemrevnivek - Whoops. Looks like it got flagged and deleted. Oh well...
But what? You can get better answers to more difficult questions here.
I miss the old Chiphacker too, but I think of it in the framework of being improved into this, rather than lost.

I think the site colour scheme is a bit plain personally
I really like the bread board logo but
I dislike that you cant ask questions regarding where to buy things

Ah. We're going to have some disagreement, then.

There also seems to be alot of violations of the FAQ which are tolerated.. if anyone has been noticing
@reemrevnivek re colours? :)

1:47 PM
Yup, that's definitely a problem. If you see one, feel free to bring it here, to the Meta site (meta.electronics.stackexchange.com), or just click the "flag" link and someone will take a look at it.

Bah.. most of the violations i like :D they are good questions!

No, re: shopping.
If you have ideas about the colors, post a question with the [design] tag on Meta, or post an answer to this general question:

@reemrevnivek Wow thank you for the links!
Are you getting paid to chat here? You're great!

1:50 PM
No, just having fun.
I'm an electrical engineering student, and Electronics Design is, I hope, becoming a good place to get answers about expert questions encountered in electronics design.
I contribute not because I get paid, but because I like the site and want it to be better.

Man i regret partying too hard while studying the EE subjects at uni... haha
EE is hard!
Well to wrap around my brain.. i am trying to learn

Well, I hope this site is a good resource for you. I have to get back to work now, but have fun poking around!

I am so nooby, that i'm still having trouble understanding a capacitor input filter on a circuit diagram! It's insane i say!
Thanks for the chat, hope to see you around! And I am reading those links!
Cya!

Oh, BTW, there's a moderator election going on right now: electronics.stackexchange.com/election I'm running, but you already know that I'll moderate in the opposite direction of the shopping questions you want. I hate to say it, but in the interest of being fair, Mark is probably your guy if you want shopping questions.

Yup! He's my no1 pick! D
Run!
OH i thought u meant running to go to work! :(
I'll +1 you still!! Uhoh i gotta go!

Q: What is the optimum distance between a micro-controller and a crystal on a PCB?

user4006Hi , I wanted know what should be the optimum distance between a microntroller(AT89C51ED2) and a crystal of frequency 11.0592MHz?

Short, simple question without any context or explanation with a ton of short, simple answers without much content or explanation.
Not much we can do about it, I guess.
AngryEE's answer was pretty good, but I've used up my votes for today.

4:09 PM
@NickT My favorite type of circuit is the one that only works with an oscilloscope attached

now it's just the friggin DAQ I'm using that's driving me nuts
it formats its 13 bit samples where bits [15:13] are 0, if [12] is 1 it's negative, 0 is positive, then [11:0] is the number that's positive or negative
not in 2's compliment or anything
so 01 00 00 01 is negative 1
00 00 00 01 is positive 1

4:55 PM
Sounds like it's designed for FPGAs, not for microcontrollers. Something like the following should work, though I assume you've got it working already:
`int16_t val = 0x1000 & input ? 0x0FFF & input : -1 * ( 0x0FFF & input ) ;`
Does anybody want a "Questions for moderator nominees" page like this one on Tex.SX?

Q: Questions for moderator nominees

CaramdirLet's try to get this election finally started. If you have any questions you want to ask all the candidates (I hope there will be more soon!), please do so here, so that we can keep things organized.

Feels a little stuffy, but it might be helpful.
@NickT And 00 00 00 00 is positive 0, and 01 00 00 00 is negative 0. This is why we use 2's complement, people!
@Kortuk - They're still visible under the "Nomination" tab of the election page:

5:28 PM
def convert(n):
	# SR245 returns data in some asinine format:
	# bit: 1111 11
	#      5432 1098 7654 3210
	#      000s dddd dddd dddd
	# s = sign, 0 = positive, 1 = negative
	# d = data bits
	if n & (1 << 12):
		n = -(n ^ (1 << 12))
	return n
@reemrevnivek thinksrs.com/products/SR245.htm Ancient DAQ being used in this optics setup
I was kinda looking if I could find a cheap, more modern DAQ with an external trigger, but not much luck

5:47 PM
@NickT Oh, duh: You don't have to do anything if bit 12 is 0...

I got screwed up because I was using | instead of &. /facepalm

@NickT "Cheap" and "Modern DAQ" are pretty much exclusive...

Eh, not really, Measurement Computing and B&B have some reasonable ones
like $2-300 for a basic one

@markrages, @NickT - Since there are three of us here, what do you think about starting a Meta post "Questions for nominees" like the TeX stackexchange one? Is it necessary?

could connecting a capacitor between the output and inverting stage of an amplifier would make it unstable?
or should that chop down HF

hola @reemrevnivek @NickT

"You may have a slightly racist algorithm" - my professor after a classmate presented his project

Why's that
like where face detection on the Kinect doesn't work well for black people, or some stupid pun

it was a red eye fixing algorithm and some of the shades of light colored skin was making his algorithm not work, so he added a stage where he blacked out white skin

7:24 PM
did he reverse said stage or what?

well you never actually saw it, once he found the red eyes he went back to the original image

right...so...

Right. Unfortunately, the Lorem Ipsum generator I used doesn't generate valid Latin, according to Google Translate, so I'm kinda stuck here.
We could flag it, according to:
29
Q: Is English required on Stack Overflow?

1 2Otherwise known as 必需用英语吗?(is English Required?) Return to FAQ Index

Lorem ipsum is Latin run through a shredder

and the shredder that generated @reemrevnivek's resulted in non-latin words
Most generators give real words, they just dont makes much sense in a sentence.

7:33 PM
Google says that Mr. Ipsum's question was:
and sorrow is love, avenging the author of pain. Or eget maecenas eros a pure, by the congu before the attendants deal with pain from the Varius. Fermentum by. Upon soft Consequently, her porch, in the Heading, euismod in the beating at times this DUI, before the time, until that very good as leaven. Thinking of the Moors amet dui?

No, canonical lorem ipsum fragments the words
In publishing and graphic design, lorem ipsum[[#References|[p]]] is placeholder text (filler text) commonly used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document or visual presentation, such as font, typography, and layout. The lorem ipsum text is typically a section of a Latin text by Cicero with words altered, added and removed that make it nonsensical in meaning and not proper Latin. "What does the filler text "lorem ipsum" mean?", Cecil Adams, The Straight Dope, February 2001, webpage: [http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2290/what-does-the-filler-text-lorem-ipsum-mean ...

hmm. interesting. then maybe the generator i use isnt as good as its supposed to be and just uses full words

Wait - How did DUI get into the translation?

dui was in the original

@Kellenjb Ah, it just capitalized it. Makes sense.

7:45 PM

9:25 PM
@W5VO Good question, and good job removing most of the bias from the question while still giving some context.
Some of those points echo more strongly with me, and the unanswered counter-arguments to the first and second sentences seem to carry more weight than the original points, but I'm not sure how it could be made more neutral without being context-free.
I'm out for the night, though, so ttyl!

10:14 PM
@reemrevnivek Personally, I'm on the fence. I learn about new parts that are useful to me on a regular basis - "Did you know that there's a part that does..." but I think people expecting us to be a better Digikey search is infuriating

1 hour later…
11:21 PM
So, when I tried to click to nominations page it actually went to the primaries page, which is why I never saw my comment I had been linked. No worries now. @reemrevnivek, Thank you for the feedback, I am running for election also and I am happy that one of the most active users of the site and how it runs was happy with what I did.

11:58 PM
@reemrevnivek Let me know what you think of my response. I just added a bit of why I do what I do.
@W5VO I a ma strong supporter that good shopping questions are allowed, but someone saying, this 5 dollar part is too much, help. Is not good operations.
