@mattdm hmmm

Q: Canon 600D Battery Grip, is it worth it?

Akram MelliceRecently I heard that a battery grip can enhance the feel of the camera in my hands, besides some people claim that it enhances the stability of the camera if you are trying to put it on a table or something. So I started to look for a battery grip for my Canon 600D and found the Canon's one to...

@mattdm I thought CC-BY-SA was distributable and adaptable?

@JamWheel as long as the distributed work remains under the same terms.
Pinterest requires an additional grant.
Now, I'm not a lawyer; that's just my reading.

@mattdm 'an additional grant' - where does pinterest require that

I don't understand what Pinterest is about... how is it different from the content being tweeted or similar?

"Subject to any applicable account settings you select, you grant us a non-exclusive, royalty-free, transferable, sublicensable, worldwide license to use, display, reproduce, re-pin, modify (e.g., re-format), re-arrange, and distribute your User Content on Pinterest for the purposes of operating and providing the Service(s) to you and to our other Users."

9:08 PM
i imagine you would find a similar statement to that in twitters terms, also Google + etc

Stack Exchange simply doesn't have the right to grant that license.
Twitter isn't a similar issue, because as far as I know Stack Exchange just sends links to the content.
I don't think Pinterest's terms are out of line. I just think they're not compatible.

is the content actually reproduced on pinterest then?

@JamWheel yeah

do they reproduce it on google+?
(don't even know if they have an account there)

I dunno. I have an account but haven't looked at what Stack Exchange does.

9:13 PM
so, why is it a big deal to you? you're not happy with them using your content on Pinterest?

@mattdm I finally understand what your issue is, I just don't think it was clearly stated in your comment. Its not with the attribution from SE, but the fact the it gets relicensed with a new incompatible license (which apart from other things, doesn't require attribution)
the idea being that Pinterest, as a company, could use it without attribution
yes?

yeah, exactly.

they seem to reproduce snippets of blog posts on google + which has a v similar license
Pinterest just have that license to allow them to actually show the content within their pages
if it is posted by SE without attribution... that isn't a Pinterest problem, is it?

In order to post it, Stack Exchange needs to agree to the clause above.

yes

9:16 PM
Where does Stack Exchange get that right?

likewise in google+

Sure.

@JamWheel he's not worried about what SE attributes, but after they post it, its under a different license

I don't think sharing on Pinterest is a bad idea. I just think that because of the content license Stack Exchange has chosen (which is a) awesome and b) at least partially responsible for SE's success), they need to ask for additional rights to do some things they'd just be able to do outright if they asked for complete ownership of user contributions (as, ironically, Pinterest is doing).

yeh... not sure I see why it is an issue... if you don't like it, withdraw your content and stop using the site, shirley? Isn't that the same for anyone who reproduces / shares your content via something like pinterest
i don't think Pinterest's clause gives them total ownership
just the ability to reproduce it on their website

9:20 PM
Well, I like contributing under the Creative Commons license.
The problem is, basically, Stack Exchange is better than Pinterest. So they can't just devolve to Pinterest without asking.

I'm still for it from a "I'd like to do it personally" but after discussing with @mattdm in chat, I understand his concerns more. It may be very possible that its simply incompatible. CC BY-SA allows for commercial use but only so long as the use retains a similar license. When its reposted to pinterest, it goes under a new, incompatible license. SE would be breaking an attribution clause, but they would be re-licensing it inappropriately. — rfusca 2 mins ago

@ElendilTheTall 2.5kg tricky to hand hold? (reading your blog) - not really that bad...

@JamWheel well you're forgetting that he's a weakling ;)

@rfusca :)
@rfusca did you see the question I posted earlier... didn't think we had questions which could turn into discussions (ie have no definitive answer)

@JamWheel ya, i'm just not sure on it...its definitely on the edge of acceptable. If it had some close votes, I'd probably make a decision
go ahead and flag it and the rest of the mods can weigh in

9:27 PM
