Hi all

@Rob hola
@Instantkamera ya, I think i've done that

5:13 PM
DS costs almost the same as a wii here

Rob
same in the uk

lol

meh our local online shopping website uses asp.net and is crap slow :/ I think they can learn a few things from se iirc they use a .net stack

ya, SE is very, very .NET

Rob
is it?

5:17 PM
yes :)

Rob
not php and jquery :(

still loading...

Rob
always just assumed it was php and jquery

kalahari.com <- for reference

Rob
@Laura where are SE based?

5:18 PM
the search bar is the last thing that renders on the page :/
nvm :/ gave up closed the tab

@Rob new york city

Rob
ah cool
all the best IT companies are in the US
or London
:S

lies :P

Rob
tell me :)

Canonical (SA based) as well as MXit (don't know if you heard of them) it's a cheap cellphone im thingy
they don't compare to MS or Apple though

Rob
5:22 PM
I think thats what I mean

the Giants are in a totally different league .... they make more money than the annual budget for our country

Rob
Facebook etc

nothing compares to them :/

Rob
I have a question

can't go back to my lies comment :P strike through would be fitting now

Rob
5:24 PM
might be worth putting on the site
if i take a photo at 3000X4000
px
but take a photo at 1500x2000
look at both on a big screen
but zoom them so objects are the same size
in the image
is the quality the same
i guess pixal density is at play
and should be the same right?

whats the resolution of the tv?
just a random q

Rob
erm
theoretical
12000x 12000
both images are on the same screen
I think to simplify the question
between quality settings on the cam
eg raw/fine/medium/low
photographing the same subject
is the image cropped or zoomed to the resolution - or is the pixel density increased?

should be easy to test
isn't it just resized in camera ?
from my photo's the quality is relatively the same the only difference is that when you go to 100% on both
it seems the camera resizes the photos

Rob
5:43 PM
ok
Im gonna test it

ok left is L(fine) right is S3(fine)
all the shots were handheld

Rob
ok
looks the same

wait, whats going on?

Rob
is s3 more?

the smallest I can shoot

Rob
5:46 PM
we are experimenting

with what?

Rob
so L fine is more
my question is this

right is zoomed 100% left is zoomed out to ~the same size
yeah L(fine) is the largest jpg I can shoot

Rob
ok
my question is

thats ISo3200 btw :P

5:47 PM
@fluf good, cuz i was gonna say...

small 3

Rob
I have different quality modes on my cam

if you testing detail in your different modes, don't do it at ISO 3200 though

Rob
raw fine med and low

much detail is already destroyed

Rob
5:47 PM
say raw is 3000x4000

@rfusca yes but i didn't want to kill puppies it is almost 8pm here

Rob
and fine is 1500x 2000
if I take a photo of the same object
and zoom so they are the same size
will the quality be the same?
or is pixel per inch increased?
I will get my cam an tripod in a bit and test

all the photos I took was 72dpi 24bit the resolution was the only difference

Rob
right
so
so is the photo cropped?

thats why I say it might be in camera resizing

Rob
5:50 PM
ok
my brain is hurting on this one

let someone who knows more than me help :P looks at @rfusca

@fluf sorry, i can't too much - i'm working :/

np

Rob
I will test soon and get back to you
wonder if my findings could be added to the site in some way
maybe the resolution tag wiki?

ok well it's not cropping

Rob
5:52 PM
so you dont loose any of the subject

same everything besides the quality of the image, which points to in camera resizing
nope none

Rob
hmm
is a pixel a standard size?

Rob
be back in a bit

S3

Rob
5:54 PM
thanks for the help so far @fluf

np I moved from taking one photo to the other

6:05 PM
not sure I understand what you are asking, 3000x4000 has more data than 1500x2000. That means 1 of two things:

1) Image size, at the same dot/pixel density, will be larger in the 3Kx4K image.

or

2) at the same physical size, the 3Kx4K image will have a higher density of pixels/dots per inch

@rfusca images added to the post

@Rob No. Pixel == a "picture element", and describes a piece of an entire matrix that makes up an image (or display, sensor, etc). The size can vary, which should be evident considering we have sensors in our cameras that are a fixed size, yet contain more/less pixels. The only way to fit MORE pixels in the same area is ... to change the size of the pixels (technically, you can also change the space between pixels too, but you get what i mean)

@ElendilTheTall i think the only think I'll do is add a link to the SE lending program in meta
it needs more exposure

6:31 PM
lol, blog views

7:10 PM
@rfusca yes, please!
also, yay blog views :)

@Laura i think all the blog posts that are a result of that, should reference it somehow
get people thinking "how could I rent something that awesome for writing a blog post"
@laura ya, I knew some about your work history. When you started as our chaoser, I did my homework :) Thats why I'd asked if you knew resources

7:26 PM
@rfusca yes, please :) It would also be cool if blog posts regularly started linking back to content on the main Q&A site - link a couple relevant questions or answers at the bottom of the post, or reference a great answer somewhere in the body of the post. Blog views are nice, but they'd be even better if they got more eyes on the main site too :)

@Laura nod yup, good point, I'll work on that from a blog admin perspective

And I'll let you know if I think of any other good resources - honestly, just spending like 20 minutes a day on Mashable will help a lot. Getting a sense of what other companies are doing with social media, even if they're not in the same industry as you, is always good.

@Laura awesome, thats good to know :)

@rfusca my wife was an avid crafter and sorta ran her own business. The people at etsy and sites like that are insanely good at self marketing and social media.

@Instantkamera nice

It amounts to putting in the time, for one. But also building up a base of "fellow crafty folk" ... or in your case "fellow budding photo pros". Sure, they won't be your clients, but they can help get your name out and spread the word. Say, when you have some online promotion. It helps if you have like-minded friends who will re-tweet your posts and get the word to people who MAY actually use your services.
Same goes with following and actively tweeting/retweeting local businesses. If you make yourself visible as a FRIEND to them, they will reciprocate.
I know you scoffed at the suggestion that you should have an active flickr, but I think they are getting at the same point. That will help you bond with your fellow photographers and get the name out there more.

@mattdm closed, with a (hopefully nice enough) comment

IMO though, flickr is the least of your worries. It's all about twitter and FB. Run contests, get people involved, do giveaways, offer coupons (remember the groupon idea, you will be swamped with clientelle) and get friends in the biz and local "celebs" as twitter friends who will actively share what you put out.

Rob
Will SE sites ever have adverts?

@Rob they do
log out and look around the site

Rob
7:37 PM
wow subtle :)

@rfusca A buddy of mine did a wagjag, he practically had to beat clients away with a stick.

@Instantkamera ya, i'll definitely look at groupon

And I don't live in the most progressive place ever, either. Im surprised there are that many who actually use the internet here

Rob
@rfusca can you explain what we were chatting about last night rent lenses for blog posts or somthing

read meta
it's all in there

Rob
7:40 PM
ok

Q: Call for Photography Gear Grant applicants: April 2012

LauraWe're wrapping up a trial run of this program, so I wanted to get started on the next round. My goal is to select a new group of 3-6 people every month. The purpose of this program is to generate content about photography gear that is either very common or very new and exciting - basically, to h...

@rob @Instantkamera @mattdm - make sure and weigh in here if you have an opinion

Rob
Like it

@rfusca I ^'d your post, it's pretty spot on

Rob
Ditto

cool

Rob
7:45 PM
I always say with anything i do - ask and credit me thats all

I don't use pinterest, but cant I share any SE question there anyway?

We just want to see as much of the community weigh in as possible
as far as I know yes

Rob
I have used pintrest
its good

@Instantkamera this is really less 'can' and more of a being courteous to the community

Rob
I have a question
shutterbug was asking about creating some kind of book
from content on the site

7:47 PM
right, but im saying I think shit is shared anyway, So why not have it shared by SE proper. At least then it's done in a manner that maintains proper transparency to the original content

Rob
can he do that?

@Instantkamera agreed
@Rob as far as I know, yes

Rob
ok cool

its all CC BY-SA

Rob
I need to read up on that

Rob
thanks
ok im going to do some photography
been a long time

good
;)
show us the results

Rob
want todo macro ice

macro lice?
eww

Rob
:) ice

7:51 PM
;)

Rob
last q
Sigma
70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG MACRO HSM II Lens
looks amazing for £600
but no OS

@Rob i'm watching one on ebay that may go for about 600$ USD :D

Rob
oh wow
i mean at 2.8 do you need OS?
for 200 mm at 2.8 thats v good

@Rob OS is clearly useful, but for the light I normally shoot in and the ISO I normally do, its not a huge loss
if you were doing weddings, I'd want it
if you're an outdoor photog, then eh

Rob
@rfusca my thoughts exactly
wonder the diff between the nikon

7:53 PM
There's a Tamron thats cheaper, but the AF isn't as fast

Rob
oh right

but its reportedly very sharp

Rob
solid looking thing

I like their EX lenses
my EX 50mm f/1.4 is beautiful

Rob
its gonna go up surly?
oh my

7:55 PM
a little probably ya

Rob
the 50 mm 1.4 sigma is class leader imho
i have the nikon

ya, i like the sigma a lot - it lives on my camera

Rob
my only sigma is 10-20
its my landscape beauty lens
:D

as soon as tax money comes back (any day) and I can find one, i'm getting a Nikon 85mm f/1.8G or a tamron/sigma 70-200mm f/2.8
i just don't like landscapes as much

Rob
sure
the sigma has a macro mode to
nice

7:59 PM
its probably not true macro

Rob
sure

they often label half size as macro

Rob
might have a look at the flickr group for more samples

yup
well, i'm off, ciao

Rob
cool cya man

8:03 PM
macro == close focus
when they say that, it's usually never even close to real 1:1, but it generally does mean the lens will focus very closely, which is what sucks about most std nikon lenses.

Rob
I have a 90 mm macro which is 1:1
im very pleased with it

right, that's a proper macro
Im talking about the "macro" feature of non-dedicated lenses

Rob
yeh

@Instantkamera Yes. I (a stack exchange employee) am looking to create a branded account for Stack Exchange on Pinterest. Since I am acting on behalf of the company in a way that directly affects users, I wanted to get the opinions and hear any concerns from said users before I went ahead and started doing this. (Or, as @rfusca said more succinctly, I'm being courteous because I respect the community)

Rob
so is it a bad thing then?

8:06 PM
take my 16-85 v. sigma 17-70 ... I could glue something to the front element of the sigma, and it will focus
the damn 16-85 ... I have to always back away from things

Rob
Laura - whats the strategy to compartmentalize the SE site areas
on pintrest
eg will you have sections/

@Laura I dig that. Im just saying that the rest of the internet doesn't have the same respect. I dont use pinterest, but I'm sure if I did, I would see random SE content pinned there anyway

@rob My plan is to have a different pinterest board for each subject - one for photography, one for food/cooking, one for diy, etc.

Rob
awesome
I still think its important to have a clear division between sites

@Instantkamera Yup. You might be right (I actually haven't done much looking to see if there's SE content on there yet.) The rest of the internet might not respect your wishes, but I feel like if I'm acting on behalf of a brand, I should. And I'm also genuinely curious about the opinions of our users since it's a rather contentious subject among photographers.

8:11 PM
besides, us photographers have it easy. Anyone who reads some of the more popular web comics (xkcd, the oatmeal, etc) knows that they have it the worst. There are sites (that run ads) dedicated to ripping off hilarious jpgs.
@Laura I appreciate the thought, I'm hoping that the rest of the gang will see it's a bit of harmless cross-promotion.

That's my hope. And it's also worth bearing in mind that it's an experiment - I might find that it's too much work to keep a Pinterest account updated and that I'm not really seeing any results from it. If that's the case, I'd just stop using it entirely.

evenin all
'good evening elendil, how are you today?'
oh, not so bad thanks, you?
'yes, fine thanks'
'you're looking particularly fine today!'

@ElendilTheTall evening ;)

evening
on to the next blog post I suppose
I gots to get paid

@ElendilTheTall ya
@mattdm - not sure i understand this

8:28 PM
@rfusca Which part?

@mattdm "Having Stack Exchange be cavalier about respecting their half of that deal is disappointing."

I dont consider that cavalier at all. I think it's mutually "good business"

8:51 PM
The Creative Commons license means that even though Stack Exchange is a for-profit company, the answers we write (including images, but very much the text as well) goes towards increasing the common good.
That's cool.
But the license isn't just "public domain" — there's a pro quid pro.

@mattdm right?

Specifically, in return for letting Stack Exchange use my photos and writing commercially, they give me credit, and the rule about sharing is passed along to the next users.
So, when I say "cavalier", I mean "as long as I attribute it, I can share it anywhere". That's not the case!
There's a deal, and both sides need to be respected.

@mattdm right? so i'm not clear what SE isn't doing that they should be

@rfusca oh, nothing yet, but if they start posting CC-BY-SA content to Pinterest without an additional license from the contributor, then they are.
Because Pinterest requires a broader grant, with no pro quid pro.
