5:51 PM
:223265 Thanks Rowland. I submitted a thunderhead shot I took a while back. Here's to hoping for some publicity. :)

1 hour later…
7:17 PM
:224601 BEst of luck with that :)
I might have a go, too; just need to think of the right subject

7:43 PM
:224763 Based on the link you sent, it is limited to 'clouds'.

Eeep

yeah
I almost submitted something else, then noticed that, and submitted the pic of the thunderheads

I saw the "don't include anything recognisable" bit

yeah, didn't really get that bit...
:219798 Did you see the wedding photographer Eruditass found?
Amazing work.

I'd go for something like flickr.com/photos/ratarsed/4064429471
I did see it; certainly different
Not what I'd want as a client, but I could appreciate the market for it

7:47 PM
yeah, not sure I would want that for my own wedding photos, but fantastic work nonetheless
what is that in the foreground?
arg.

That's a sculpture, so it would fail the rights test

It appears that somewhere along the line, I broke the plastic around the bayonette of my 18-55mm EF-S lens

I've a whole set on it (see the "Handstanding" set)

meh
yay for plastic lens bodies >.>

I've got a spare 20D ;)
only done 20K shots, so should be good for another 30k
(That was an interesting set of answers today/yesterday)

7:51 PM
how is the 5D?

Nice :)

:224892 The shutter stuff?

Knowing my luck it'll be replace next month ;)
yeah

lol
from what I understand, Q2 or Q3 2011 for 5D Mk III

Depends which rumours you trust

7:52 PM
I almost got a 5D II
but managed to prevent myself from getting one yet

some say that'll be the 1DsIV

yeah, I've heard that too

But if you've damaged the plastic...
I believe in propping the economy up, one camera at a time

although the most recent ones I've read seem to be from very reliable sources that stated that the 5D would be out before the next 1D
I damaged the kit lens
not the camera body
the 18-55mm lens has a plastic lens mount, rather than a metal one

Well, that's not what you tell the wife ;)

7:54 PM
I don't know when it happened, but I just noticed that its all cracked
hah!

My 18-55 is gathering a lot of dust

Guess thats the one good thing about being single...
I am really dabating what to get for my next lens
I'm thinking 50mm
however, I'm not sure which one to get

The 50/1.8 is nice

I want something that will let me take really nice night sky/milky way shots

Cheap too

7:55 PM
so the f/1.2 is really appealing
I save up $2000 for a lens every 6 months
so cost isn't a problem really

Surely you'd want super tiny aperture for that
(with an insane exposure time)

for night sky??
well, there are long-exposure and short-exposure night shots

Although, thinking about it, trails would be an issue

for long exposure, you need a tracking mount

I don't do any astro-photography

7:56 PM
exactly...you get trails wihtout a trackinhg mount
there is also short-exposure astrophotog

My father in law has all the kit for it

you use a higher ISO
a very fast lens, and shorter exposures

5D2 is amazing in low-light

I've been using ISO 1600, but it is really noisy
with an f/2.8 lens. I was thinking the 50mm f/1.2 at ISO 800mm
usually, you can shoot up to 25-30 seconds before star trails start to show
yeah, the 5D would definitely be better for it, but I really want to wait for the Mk III now.

I did some experiments with low light and insane ISO prior to purchase

8:01 PM
thats ISO 6400?

350dpi resolution...
so, does that mean, 350dpi is the native resolution of images produced by the 5D?

That's just what Canon DPP puts in the meta data

oh

full size should be there for pixel peeping

8:03 PM
whats the native res for that camera?

I can't wait to get a 5D
How is the dynamic range?

Seems a lot better than my old 20D, even though the spec sheets say they should be similar

i would hope, with it being FF and having larger photosites

The photosites are smaller on the 5D2 than the 20D

8:09 PM
?

the 20D had a similar pixel density to the 5D; but the 5D2 increased the pixel density

oh, 20D
yeah, thats an older sensor

much
That's a lot of saving of money to save up for it :)

how long did you save?

Well, I waited one year for the price to drop from initial demand
Then saved for another
then sold my car :/

8:11 PM
lol
eh, who needs cars

(admitedly, it was costing a lot of money, just to keep it on the drive)

when you can have a 5D!
costing money to keep it on the drive?

Yeah, road tax, insurance, etc.
also things like air con don't last as well if they're not used

oh, yeah
road tax?

wife got a new car last year, so mine was the more unreliable one, so I sold it whilst it had a resale value
Yeah, in the UK, you pay a tax just for owning a car

8:13 PM
guess that must be similar to car registration tax?
ah, yeah, same thing

that was about 200 USD /year
insurance is about 300 USD / year

thats pretty good
car registration and license taxes drop year by year in the US

fuel is about 5.50 USD / gallon

I think I spent $450 when I first bought my car
the next year it was about half that
and it is hardly anything now

Over here it goes up each year

8:15 PM
I think I spent $30 last year
bummer

there's an annual mandatory safety check at another 100 USD / year

I am just hoping the raging liberals in the US don't manage to pass the driving distance tax
they want to GPS track every car in the US
and charge us tax by the mile >.>

so it gets expensive for something that we had two of :)

bastards

I wouldn't mind that, as a low-mileage kind of person

8:16 PM
no
thats ON TOP of the rest

Ah. Over here they want to do it to replace the other charges

they won't get rid of registration and licencing fees and whatnot...they want to levvy milage tax on top of everything else.
thin is
I don';t think the government has ANY business knowing where every person is at any given time
Too much power for the government

It could be easily abused

I'm a big small-government type of guy
exactly

Although, where I work, we already GPS track all our vehicles

8:19 PM
your company does?

My eployer is in the logisitics ssector though
so it's partly for insurance, and tracking stolen vehicles

yeah, but thats a private sector thing
I don't mind if it is private sector

Yeah; it wasn't a popular thing when it was introduced

because a person can always get a different job if they don't like being tracked
when the government has that kind of power, its too dangerous
governments are not known for their benevolence

...especially with seemingly innocuous things like religious belief

8:21 PM
yes
you religious?

Don't think so
I don't practice any religion; and I don't agree with how some religions seem to take the view that non-members will be damned for eternity
Maybe that makes me a humanist :)

;)
I wouldn't say I am "religious"

It's hard not to be religious, given the desperate views by varying faiths

I don't really care for that word, given its connotations
I hold a certain set of beliefs
Founded in the Bible
I do think everyone has a right to excersize their own beliefs, so long as they don't affect the lives of others
(by that I mean, if someones religion mandates that they kill others, I have a serious problem with that...however if they annoy me with talk about their beliefs, thats fine. ;P)

I think that too many religions use there faith as an excuse to enforce their view on others
I don't like people enforcing their view.

8:26 PM
Agreed

I'm open to people discussing their views though
as long as they're willing to listen to counter views

In the US, we have certain very political organizations, like the ACLU, that goes around enforcing their anti-christian and anti-religious views on people through law suits
Its sad how much intolerance there is to people expressing their constitutional right to religion

The scientologists haven't got the best reputation for listening to counter-views

heh
scientologists have a reputation for being bat-shit crazy
Tom Cruise being supreme among them

I wonder what Katie Holmes saw in him ;)

8:29 PM
it was kind of funny for a while there...Scientology became a bit of a fad in hollywood

Kabala was another odd one

hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of dollars were given to the Church of Scientology when hollywood went through its scientology fad stage
yeah, Kabala

Each to their own though, I saw
say, even

so long as their view doesn't mandate the murder, tourture, or other radical invasion of peoples lives
There are some things that religion is simply an excuse for

I find it a little odd at times how Christians stick up for Jews, even given how they treat the Palestinians
(And there's a sentence that'd prick up the ears of the CIA/MI6 :)

8:33 PM
what about how the Palestinians attack Isreal?
that is most certainly not a one-sided issue

Indeed; it does work both ways, but there is bias in how it is reported

the Jews live in their rightful land and have a right to protect their people
the Palestinians have lobbed rockets and whatnot into isreal for decades
and Isreal responds
if the Palestinians did such a thing to the US
I think we would have been FAR harsher

Ever since the West gave parts of Palestine to form Israel. Ooops.

It was Isreal long before it was Palestine, though

Indeed
Its a shame they can't resolve their differences, as in essence they are all humans

8:36 PM
Well, its Islam
Of all the "religions" in the world
Islam is the least tolerant
I don't think they will rest until they have quite literally conquered the world and either murdered or converted everyone
its not really just a Palestine/Isreal issue
its more of an Islam/World issue
Their "religion" mandates that they convert or kill anyone who isn't muslim

I think most branches of religion have their extremists and their more tolerant.

Which is really just an excuse to be brutal and hateful and murdurous that much of the world seems obliged to accept
Sure, most beliefs of any kind have extrems
but with Islam, it is intrinsic in the belief system

But if you compare Islam in Marakesh, it's different to say, Kabul

You can't really be "muslim" without fully submitting to the will of Allah, as it is portrayed in the Qur'an
thats actually what muslim means...one who willfully and fully submits

The irony is the common roots of parts of the Qur'an, the old testement and Tanakh

8:41 PM
aye
Ishmael, the illegitimate son of Abraham, is lifted to a lofty and godlike position in Islam

Oddly, I know little of the oriental religions

heh, because there are too many :P

...and I've never studied relgion properly

I havn't really either
I've been trying to learn more
knowledge is the root of understanding, right?

I like learning new things

8:46 PM
me too
like photography
I havn't been so hooked on anything in a LONG time

I think that's why I got hooked on the stackexchange/overflow model

I think my addition to SE is starting to wane
I used to have to be here all the time
answering every question

With so many, I tend to now focus only on Photo

Its been kind of a relief to back off a bit and do some real photography
yeah, me too
although I try to back off a bit and let other people answer these days

I was on cooking & gis daily, too

8:48 PM
I do some moderating every day or two
how is cooking doing?

Ditto, I think it's good to give others the chance

yeah

I find cooking a little too US-centric (no offence meant)

Matt Grum has really raced through the ranks lately

Deservedly, too

8:49 PM
:225244 None taken. Sometimes things do end up that way...which is kind of sad for Cooking...that is such an international thing.
he seems pretty smart

I asked on cooking about homesmoking, and was told just to use liquid-smoke; a product that doesn't appear to be available here
The stats for us on area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/1265/… are good
the cooking site comes across as dominated by Hobodave's opinions at times

hobodave, eh?
and what is liquid smoke?
I can see what they mean about too many niche site proposals on Area51

Yeah
Bah. turns out the Bing contest is US residents only :(

DOH
thats kind of odd
microsoft is pretty international

Nevermind
I just tweeted them to suggest they change their mind ;)

9:00 PM
nice :)
Ever heard of Marc Adamas?

Nothing like a bit of public humilation to kick them into life next time

Guy is pretty much THE best currently living landscape artist I think I've ever encountered:
:225277 Indeed!
I LOVE this shot:

HDR?

nope
the guy is just a friggin genious
I guess he's used all kinds of equipment, including film and digital.

9:03 PM
Seems most of his work over the last several years has been pure digital.
yeah...isn't he amazing?

Pretty good
:)

he just captures sky in the most brilliant way

That guy must know his grad filters very well

I can only hope to b ecome a fraction that good some day
he must.
I finally have enough Lee filters to really make a difference

Well, it's sunset season

9:05 PM
my more recent shots used Lee soft GND's and ND's
yeah :)
I'm actually looking forward to winter this year
snow adds an intriguing element
snow and ice
The flare here is perfect:
bleh, I'm being throttled by 10 seconds now....this chat really clamps down if you type too much too often

I'm going to head off now, anyway. Timezones working against us...
BEst of luck with the Bing competition :)

thanks
night rowland
