It also means that the "things" that have been stealing you from us for the last couple of years are being resolved and that's a good thing, too.
If only we could find @ComIntern and get him back on board. tear

Hey @FreeMan, you do SSRS stuff, right? I'm new and I'm having a fairly basic issue with pagination splitting lines of text. Have you ever seen this? stackoverflow.com/questions/73396138/…
I both love and hate SSRS reports BTW. They are powerful and yet a bit opaque. The Tablix Hierarchy being a separate nested structure that must match the first is a baffling design decision. I tried adding a tablix row in code and broke the whole thing until I could add a matching row to the hierarchy. barf. The editor couldn't detect or repair this issue.
I've been meaning to ask if you've ever tried the PowerBi report editor? docs.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/paginated-reports/…
I'm using the old microsoft report builder but they are acting like the PowerBi one is the new version that will supersede.

still at it and learning new things by the minute... i still have ~160 files left to remove.

Remove-item in powershell is letting me do one file at a time, and takes slightly longer than the explorer method (i originally thought powerShell was faster, then realized i had different size files being compared).

If I try and delete multiple files with explorer in a single group, it takes a very long time... if I select individual files to delete, this seems to work better than powerShell.

Wow, I'm sorry this is such an issue for you. You could do a parallel delete operation but at some point it doesn't matter what command you use, you are waiting for the hardware to perform the task.
You can make a parallel delete script in PowerShell that would be using .NET libraries. Compare that to the built-in recursive delete

I'm posting for the sake of sharing; I wasn't expecting it to be a matter of in-series versus in-parallel, and really thought the powerShell would be faster. I really appreciate that link as I was actually mid process of trying to write a script in PS to do this.
I had just been treating this as an ancillary activity that I can do ~4 of per day in the background lol

I posted an answer to that query with a robocopy example. When you're done I would love to see a benchmark of the different things you've tried. You could add it to that SE post so we can all see what the difference is using your huge dataset!

I find it hard to imagine that ~160 files is a huge dataset... 2GB/folder; being on a network drive is the fun part (only accessible via VPN).
At this point I have this information: explorer appears to delete 3.1 files per second (including time to scan/analyze files prior to actual deletion)... the powershell remove-item appears to remove 2.4 files per second from initiating code.
I'll check your code and work to implement and give a start-to-finish time and backcalculate (~10k files within each folder).

You talk about running in the background, if you can make it run as a scheduled task on the server itself using the robocopy script that might be your ideal case. I would talk to whoever owns the server about this possibility once you determine the fastest delete command in the west

trying to learn to use powershell for tasks as opposed to single line items is interesting.  trying to understand each of what is in your post, all the while, i had this code previously (which doesn't error, but nothing happens, which means my $file is returning nothing):

A couple things: 1. get-childitem returns both files and folder by default. You have to tell it if you only want one or the other. 2. the robocopy hack only works with folders you can't sync a blank folder with a file. That should do nothing.

(this is why my code example calls the purge once, it replaces the folder with a blank one, destroying everything down that branch of the file tree. You are calling robocopy multiple times, which isn't needed.)
