@mansellan What does that hold for the future of GitHub and all the code on it? Sure, they don't own the code, but I could see them deciding, "Nah... this OSS stuff isn't going to fly, we're shutting down the service."

@FreeMan Github as a platform (and service) is independent of whether Microsoft wants to participate in FOSS

or to be more specific: it's profitable without that commitment

@Vogel612 that's true, but I still wouldn't put it past MS to decide that OSS isn't "valuable" because they don't want to participate in it anymore and that, therefore, nobody should (at least with their support).

Basically, I'm pretty cynical when it comes to MS

@FreeMan I would think that at least some bigwigs would know better because they can't really sell their products if there's no community to sell it to.

@Vogel612 IINM, private repo are free. I kind of assumed that the paid services were a very small % of GH

Also the ci features are paid, as is large-file storage extensions

the code on github can be easily hosted elsewhere. It's downright trivial

bitbucket, gitlab, sourceforge (bleh), ...

there's a vast array of options out there

the more interesting part is actually wikis, issues, PR metadata and the whole idea of discussions

isn't gitlab a github service?

gitlab is a standalone company

bitbucket basically is to github like Atlassian is to Microsoft

and Gitlab is to Github like Gitlab is to Microsoft

@FreeMan TBH I'd be surprised if they went that far. Again, you need a community to sell your products to. I am not aware of any pariahs who are also successful businessmen.... (no, Indian convenience store owners don't count. They have families)
