is there a known good resource to read about when to use async vs not? some of the data access code I have (which I adapted from somewhere) used the structure of public Task<T> GetData() => Task.FromResult(ActuallyGetTheData()) and I realized when looking it over again that I cannot actually explain why I am doing that vs. directly returning the data, which I don't think is a good thing.

I think Task.FromResult is the wrong one to use here. What you actually want is Task.Run so you actually get the benefits of async
