WordPress renewed today

1:16 PM
I just got this error on my machine, attempting to run code that's been running for years now
> Loading of unpacked extensions is disabled by the administrator
Does this mean that they've implemented something in GPO that's going to prevent me from using Selenium from here forward?
I didn't get this message earlier in the month when I ran this.

@FreeMan Lot to unpack here....
I assume you've already seen this: raaviblog.com/…
#TIL there's a thing such as "unpacked extension"... whatever it is.

2:30 PM
No, I haven't. yet...
sweet! I should be able to set that parm, then, since I don't really care where the window loads or what size it is.
Subsequent testing has shown that everything else does seem to work despite the pop-up, and it's not an error returned to VBA to be handled with On Error Goto AvoidStupidITPolicies

ProTip™ do not use RD's Sync Project in your Access project where you've been using OASIS-SVN for imex.
breaks things, quite terribly...
wasn't that bad a second ago!

yeah. definitely should not mix'n'match scc imex
esp that there'll be difference in how they handle it which will also mess up the git diff

yeah... :(

love that some goombah at MSFT decided that this was a good error message

Been "not-coding" for far too long. that seems to happen to me.

at least they didn't use all caps or exclamation points.

2:54 PM
Well, it is probably quite descriptive, if not exactly... helpful

how could a catastrophic failure ever be helpful ?!?

3:09 PM
Not a catastrophic failure but the message itself...

yes but the point is that if it has occurred, how could you possibly know?
kinda like a dead guy asking "who shot me?"
At that point, his death is a huge impediment in answering that question.

I'm not sure how you write your error trap code but I generally Case Else to a message like "You should never see this error message. If you do, contact the developer". I think this is a similar sort of thing. The problem being that Microsoft doesn't have a simple way to trace back to a developer to fix unhandled exceptions.
I have only had a user come back to me with my Else error a couple of times but both times it led the user to me and allowed me to fix their problem.

4:42 PM
I have an On Error Goto x, however, it never falls into that. The error seems to be at the OS level and isn't passed to VBA to handle.
The bizarre thing, is that when I click OK, processing goes on its merry way with no noticeable bad effects

Yeah, the window title suggests the error is in VBA itself, not your code. Your error handling can only catch errors that are called from your code. So that makes sense.
I'm surprised it can recover from a catastrophic failure. Sometimes the host application just closes when things like this occur.

5:01 PM
Oh, sorry, it's the first error Error Loading Extension that it can recover from, not the second Catastrophic Error. That one happens when loading the VBE and no, there's no recovery from that one.

5:45 PM
@HackSlash I think it's not a GPF, which is why we get this instead of crashing.
which makes it less-than-catastrophic, I guess. you could say it's catastrophic for that object you're trying to use but not catastrophic for the whole process.

My machine didn't catch fire and burn my house down, so it's not that catastrophic!
Frankly, in that scope, it was rather benign...

> Note that Visual Studio 2019 will reflect external changes immediately unless there are conflicts with unsaved changes in the IDE. I think this is probably the ideal. That said, as this changes the default behaviour of the IDE, it should definitely be configurable, and probably opt-in (at least initially).

In terms of implementation, this would require:
1. Detect file change
2. Check for modification of target component, then automatically (if clean) or by prompt (if dirty), either:

> **Justification**
The VBE allows basic modification of code window background, foreground and indicator colours, and font face and size. However, there is no means to set all of these collectively; moving away from the defaults requires laborious trial and error to set all of the various state options individually, as such it is likely that very few people bother to try.

@Duga This one should actually be quite easy, and could be quite useful / fun.
