Perhaps step 2:

was actually the only required step.

Q: VBA to address MS Word File in Use Dialogue

AdriennePosting here in hopes that it is the right forum... I'm not sure if this question has been asked before, but I have been googling/troubleshooting for over 8 hours and I'm at still at a complete deadend-- apologies in advance if I'm asking something that has already been answered. I have a vba cod...

@IvenBach 1366 days later and we've leveled up enough to continue our Lexer/Parser journey. Congrats on not giving up.

5:07 AM
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that Mug.
I definitely wasn't ready to absorb all the info then.

5:34 AM
What does the ~ (tilde) mean in commentBody : (~NEWLINE)*;?
Is it a negation character?
Now its time for bed to absorb what we've reread.

> Thanks for questioning the use of `dynamic`. Even though it _worked_ as part of the origin quickfix, your comment made me consider/realize something. Now that the work is done in a refactoring action, the model parameter is not guaranteed to be coming from (and vetted by) the inspection/quickfix processing. So, removed the use of `dynamic` and added a guard clause to enforce explicit input expectations.

I've also added unit tests for the two quickfixes. They basically test that the q

@Duga yeah...probably need some expert assistance. (using VS2019)
From AV details: MSBuild auto-detection: using msbuild version '15.9.21.664' from 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio\2017\Community\MSBuild\15.0\bin'.
C:\projects\rubberduck\RubberduckCodeAnalysis\RubberduckCodeAnalysis.csproj : warning : Unable to load the service index for source https://api.nuget.org/v3/index.json.
C:\projects\rubberduck\RubberduckCodeAnalysis\RubberduckCodeAnalysis.csproj : error : Unable to find package Sunburst.NET.Sdk.WPF. No packages exist with this id in source(s): Microsoft Visual Studio Offline Packages, nuget.org

goes to nuget.com - gets asked an inane question - hangs head in shame and goes to nuget.org instead
My original thought was that maybe they pulled the sunburst SDK from the nuget repository
but it looks like it's still there, both the original and the patched (I believe we are supposed to use the patched version)

Is this an AV config issue or is it coming from my environment?

@this LOL!!! We've all been there (Do not go to WhiteHouse dot com)

@FreeMan OMG, it's still a thing? That was already a thing since what? 2000? I wonder how many poor little tykes went there on their school projects about their favorite president...
@BZngr based on the error message, I'm going to say AV is borked, esp. if your environment builds.

3:21 PM
Yeah, no idea if it's still alive. Don't really want to find out, either.

But I would probably try again in few hours in case it's a ephermal issue.

I think WhiteHouse dot com is safe now.

@FreeMan probably for the best. Don't want to explain the website history.

Wikipedia says that adult content was removed

@BigBen what do you mean? Isn't everyone in the White House supposed to do adult things like issuing orders, meeting with diplomats and paying bills?!?
;)

3:23 PM
lololol
set myself up for that one

@this OK - though I'm unable to find a 'try again' button on GH. How does one get GH/AV to try again?
I've got 2 PRs in this 'state'. :)

3:43 PM
I believe only @Vogel612 or @MathieuGuindon can kick it. I can't.

you should be able to...
probably permissions set up incorrectly again ..
kicked the last two failing builds for a rebuild

when I'm logged in, I can only see my own build & history I can't see anyone else

didn't check whether that has any hope of solving the issue, but it's worth a shot
@this check the top left, whether you can switch

and if I click New Build, it gives an error 401, about bad credentials

you mean where I click on my name and it lists projects? I can see Rubberduck project there

click that

but if I click on it and choose the history, it is blank

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit 01de2f15 on unknown branch: AppVeyor build failed

sighs in bullcrap permission system

yeah. :\
I think the way it's setup, I can build only my own builds but not anyone else's

3:47 PM
hmm ... the sunburst SDK is no longer found..

C:\Program Files\dotnet\sdk\2.2.110\Sdks\Sunburst.NET.Sdk.WPF\Sdk not found. Check that a recent enough .NET Core SDK is installed and/or increase the version specified in global.json.

@this could you check again whether you see the build history now?
@BZngr you should already have permissions to rerun builds

I have yet to find where/how to do it.

@Vogel612 confirm I still sign in via github, right?
If so, no changes apparently

3:53 PM
hmm ...

hmm. just noticed this: https://ci.appveyor.com/project/bclothier/rubberduck

I added you to the github team
that should grant you privileges on appveyor

hmm not sure if that did anything.. I signed out then back in to make sure it's all set up. I still see the Rubberduck project but that goes to bclothier/rubberduck
if I change URL manually to rubberduck-vba/rubberduck, I see other builds but I can't see anything to start a build manually

did you switch to rubberduck-vba in the top left?

it still shows as bclothier
hmm it's not even a dropdown

3:57 PM
huh...

clicking on the Rubberduck takes me to bclothier/rubberduck. If I manually change the url to rubberduck-vba/rubberduck, I still see bclothier in top left

and clicking on your name in the top left does nothing useful, huh?

only gives me my profile or sign out
sorry, that's the top right
if I click on my name on the top left, you get the first screenshot
which is my own repository, apparently

yup
I need to procure foodstuffs now

does anyone know of an actual sensible use for CVar function?

1 hour later…
7:11 PM
Yes. You use it on a ParamArray so you can pass the ParamArray to a method expecting an array inside a variant rather than an array of variants.

Allo allo!
Does anyone please have tips on how to preserve code formatting when pasting into Excel in a readable fashion? Into a worksheet that is. I was hoping to paste nicely formatted code into a text box but it all goes horribly mushy.

7:34 PM
@Freeflow Interesting. Without that, I get a "invalid use of paramarray" which is a pretty weird error message.
@QHarr Don't use Excel? ;-)
I would imagine that you might need to make use of monospaced font & paste into the formula bar rather than into the cell but not sure if that'll do the trick.
dealing with just the line breaks in Excel is a pita already.
@this OTOH, if the other procedure takes ByVal args As Variant, then CVar() is not needed. It's only if it's ByRef, do we get the invalid use of paramarray.
Probably because the ParamArray is locally scoped and passing it ByRef would potentially cause memory leaks so they cut corners and disallowed the ByRef use.

@QHarr I wonder if you can embed a Word object... hmmm no, wouldn't actually display.

8:44 PM
@this Lol.... It is for candidates to submit their test answers but Excel is likely to be the vehicle for answer submissions even for the other languages part.
@BigBen :-(
@this Aye

who uses Excel these days for something like that :-)

@BigBen We are where we are ;-)

i hear ya. Found out this week that a license we have doesn't allow us to visualize the data in question outside of Excel (e.g. in Power BI). Time to (ab)use Excel even further.

@BigBen Good luck with that :-)

Part of me screams inside. The other part wants to make a kickass workbook that shows it to stupid S&P Global.

1 hour later…
10:02 PM
@BigBen Lemme know when you use excel to generate more than 2TB of workbooks. I'll gladly give you my crown for that.

@IvenBach well I'm not that crazy.

Avg 10MB workbook. Gave me much sads when I was doing it..

omg

Yeah....

That's almost... delusional. Who does that.

10:06 PM
mumble muble need results mumble keep in Excel mumble mumble

stupid stupid it will blow up stupid stupid
that sort of plea falls on deaf ears though

The entire Workbook should be rewritten as a dedicated program.

I demoed a proof-of-concept workbook to the VP and definitely mentioned that I was abusing Excel. I got a smile out of him.
not sure we're ready to spend $$$$$$ on a new license.

@BigBen as in a "lol" smile, or as "excellent" smile?

I think an "lol" smile.
hard to tell though, videoconference (WebEx)

10:08 PM
I'd have been worried if latter.

On a side but related note, I hate userforms.

I wonder by how much a C# solution would would beat Excel/VBA in terms of a time comparison.

I'm not sure they even know what C# is.

They don't.

This is more the Mr Joe Accountant/Finance type.
The one who merrily does UserForm1.Show and says, "Look Ma, I can code".
Even better, a solid wall of code, an On Error Resume Next, and a MsgBox "all done" at the end.

10:11 PM
I lurve those code.

S&P also handily provides Excel templates with VBA... said templates demonstrate all of the above problems.

:cringe: oof.
S&P as in Standard and Poors?

Yeah - well S&P Global.

see, that's your problem right there. They're in business to make you poor.

They handily demonstrated that this week.
stupid license that still costs $$$$ that ties me to Excel.

10:14 PM
Each time you swing that bat at Excel's body keep repeating "Don't worry babe, I still love you."
Excel will understand.

I will keep that image handy as I tear my hair out.

My goal is to rewrite the workbook in C# for the experience of it and to see how much faster it can be.

^^^^^^^ Do it ^^^^^^^^

I need to. Hard to make time.

IDK. Seems to me much more slower to do it in C#, esp w/o Excel automation
If you work at the OpenXML level, it's mind-numbingly tedious.

10:19 PM
I know Dev time will be a lot slower. Features will take so much longer to implement. Calculation time is where the gains would be.

Probably easier to do a CSV? JSON? XML? data dump, have an Excel template that can slurp the data and show off the spiffy charts.
@IvenBach See, you can do that with just data. You don't need Excel for that.

Except when the input data used uses iterative calculations to find the solution.

but that's an implementation detail. Doesn't ahve ot be Excel. Could be a SQL database even.

Yeah...
Except when they need to dig through and find out when something isn't working they can with worksheet formulas.
Catch22 since its what they know and have used for years.

That's where the excel template comes in. Extract raw data, do the math, dump the intermediate results

10:26 PM
I think I understand where you're coming from. The workbook is the template.

yeah. you could turn off the calculation in the workbook so for cases where there's no problems, everything is peachy.

Calculation has to stay on.

then you'll be still paying the penalty when you dump the data, no?

The normal workbook is 10mb. They issue comes when new code cycles come out and some of the previous configurations may not work.

I think I am missing something then. I thought the goal was to make calculation go faster because it's too slow on Excel.

10:31 PM
Finding the design for a given set of parameters takes ~ 30-60 seconds. Not too bad when you're checking through a couple designs.
When you're checking every 3 inches between 18ft to 30ft for a single parameter and multiplying each one similarly.
That's where the bloat comes in.
It quickly becomes 18*12*...*23*2*2*2. IE every input column that has a change gets multiplied.

yeah, practically factorial
