[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit 51d99b6b on unknown branch: AppVeyor was unable to build non-mergeable pull request
BUILD FAILURE!

Duck check: As part of the resource string refactoring I'm working on I've added a few *.resx files. I've noticed that it doesn't seem to like the use of Rubberduck.Resources.Refactorings.Refactorings.resx file name.
Specifically the Refactorings.Refactorings when I attempt use a using directive using Rubberduck.Resources.Refactorings.Refactorings at the location it would be used Refactorings.Refactorings.FooBarStringit states the Rubberduck.Refactorings namespace doesn't exist.
The same is true if I just use Refactorings.FooBarString.
I have to alias the using using Refactoring = Rubberduck.Resources.Refactorings which enables Refactoring.Refactorings.FooBarString. ¿Why is this the case?

@IvenBach It's .Refactorings all the way down...

1 hour later…
@IvenBach how about making it RefactoringsUI.resx then?

@MathieuGuindon Yes. In fact my understanding was that Resources.Refactorings.Refactorings was created to hold code only resources inserted by refactorings.

1:48 PM
A reminder... the only reason Rubberduck.Resources exist is to provide resources that are not specific to a single project. If there's resources that should be project-scoped, they probably should be. That does lead into the problem of avoiding duplicated resources, though. A unified resource file would have avoided creating duplicate Foo keys but it can't prevent Refactoring_Foo and Command_Foo keys being created with same value.
hmm. can a resource key look up another resource key?
Probably not since it's just text
Maybe what we really want is a unit test that asserts that none of values in any resources file in any project are duplicated.
that would then make it easier for us to create Refactorings.Resources .resx that is scoped to the Rubberduck.Refactorings, remove all the Refactoring_ prefix from the keys, and if there are any values that needs to be reused in another project, that can be easily moved to Rubberduck.Resources's .resx.

^^

and maybe another unit test to assert that a key in any resource file is not duplicated in any other resource files but that may be too onerous.

2:08 PM
By the logic above - it would seem to follow that the UI resources in the Resources project would reside in Rubberduck.Core.Resources or Rubberduck.Core.UI.Resources..No?

Yes, provided that the keys are scoped only to the Rubberduck.Core.UI
if the keys need to be re-used outside that, then it's Rubberduck.Resources
and in the process, that should eliminate the prefixes from the keys. I think we still have lot of prefixing in the keys. That should be left to the namespace/resource file name.
Making me wonder. ought there be EncapsulateFieldRefactoring.resx rather than one big Refactoring.resx....

2:27 PM
Currently, there are only two non-UI resources defined: one for CodeBuilder and one for AddInterfaceImplementation.

non-UI because they provide code snippets rather than text messages to display to users?

yes

that also implies they don't need to be translated
I really need to load up the resx manager and see how it works. We want to make it fairly easy to find all resources to be translated. Currently "code" resources have comments indicating to not translate

So far...but one of them is the not implemented interface 'TODO comment/message - which I think could benefit from having a translation.

in Templates.resx, we have 4 or 5 keys, but 1 of them shouldn't be. But the keys have prefix to keep the template together. So I don't think it's going to be practical to have a "code-only" resource file and "UI-only" resource.
I guess the comment on every non-translatable resource will have to suffice.
I hope that resx manager has a filter that can be then applied to the comment to exclude them for the translator's ease.

2:38 PM
@this Somehow, that whole thing reminded me of this vimeo.com/309663499

@FreeMan a rare lucid moment for Dr. Winchester.

Burns...I think

who?

oh, dear. I got the name wrong?

Dr. Burns

2:42 PM
Yeah, that's Frank Burns

I recalled a character Winchester in it....

Paging Dr. Pierce, Dr. John, Dr. Burns

Dr. Burns' replacement

More likely, I am not lucid right now.

Charles Emerson Winchester the Third... replaced Frank, then Hot Lips' only purser was Hawkeye

2:44 PM
ah whew I wasn't totally off base

Paging Dr. Pierce, Dr. Hunneycut, Dr. Burns

both Burns and Winchester were the foil to Hawkeye and Pierce.

Paging Dr. Pierce, Dr. Huneycut, Dr. Winchester
(in that order)
"foil", "butt of jokes", whatever...

foil butt of jokes?
butt of foil jokes?

foiled, butt of the joke again!

2:47 PM
there's tinhats, and then there's foilbutts.

foiled jokes get better reception :)

Yeah, but you'll never get the rabbit stains out if 'em
youtube.com/watch?v=VDYautIQaEU (for those who missed the reference) it's not funny if you have to explain it... :(

@this Since there are only a few, perhaps any resource targeted for code exclusively (which would include export header resources) could be put into a Rubberduck.Resources.CodeOnly.resx. It is reasonable to expected that they will be re-used by refactorings and quickfixes and other objects.

you're perhaps right about the need to re-use some of code snippets.

3:04 PM
And, I would imagine header resources would/could be broken out to smaller Format strings that allows setting the various flag values - followed by assembling the header.

hmm, then I have to ask. should we even be using resources file? Resource files are more for storing dumb values with some simple replacement. But we're now talking about building code snippets from smaller block which requires more logic than a simple key/value store?

Yeah...maybe it is not a resource file...Seems that if there is no need for translations, resource files may be overkill. Just want to get everything in one , easily accessible, reusable place. CodeSnippetProvider anyone?

3:25 PM
possibly....

or maybe just a public static class in the Resources project

3:44 PM
> Everyone,

Thanks for all the input. The Access Server team updated the farm last week to 2.5.1.5557 and everything appears to be working correctly. Not sure if this is just from being reinstalled or if you made changes, but thanks for all of your help.

damn MSForms... If there was a way to handle QueryClose dynamically, I could automatically wire it up and handle it whenever a View binds an AcceptCommand or a CancelCommand instance.

it's an event, right?

4:06 PM
Yeah... just not exposed by UserForm
kind of like the Control events ...I suppose there's a GUID and a memid attribute value for it, but I'm not sure how the guy went about figuring that out for Control events

it's in oleview
hm. but not QueryClose....

> hey let's put all the events that are actually useful in runtime interfaces that don't exist anywhere!

... maybe that is why all userforms are dynamically generated

If that is the case, then I have to assume that they must use a special DISPID
so therefore, you should get it via the typelib API

4:13 PM
hm

4:32 PM
I can move the resource files into their own project. The reason I didn't do that was because the first group within RubberduckUI.resx I looked at was used in more than one location.
After I had moved down the path of creating resx files within Rubberduck.Resources did I find others that were solely used within their own project.
I followed along with inertia after that.

It's OK to do a multiple PR for that. You probably don't want to do a big bang release only to find out that it's now faceplanting everywhere

4:57 PM
I'm not too worried about it barfing. Each time I move resources I build and check that it was valid and the strings are showing appropriately.

5:27 PM
Soooo...Oct is rapidly coming to an end. Will PRs that have yet to be Approved, but look generally acceptable, get the "hacktoberfest-accepted" labeled applied to them?... just asking on behalf of a friend

@BZngr the PRs just need to not be marked as spam =)

actually they need to be approved

argh so they changed the rules again?

at least my profile page indicates my 2 older PRs are not pending but still have the "?"
no, i think that's a separate set of rules
to be eligible, adding the label to repo is enough
but for the PR to be counted toward the goal, someone has to approve or merge the PR itself.

I'll review what's pending tonight then

5:37 PM
My friend will be glad to hear that.

yesterday, by this
So that leaves us with #5586, #5591, #5602 as PRs that are older than a week. I can't merge the first 2 since they are mine. I have no further work for those PR unless someone want to put in a last minute comment. I'm good to merge @IvenBach's 5602 if he has no further work and nobody else has comments.
I will also try and review the more recent PRs as well. We do not have to merge them by 10/31 but at least approving to help the legit contributors get their shirts, like Brian's good friend.

:)

I'm so completely missing my Hacktoberfest t-shirt this year #sad

There is the option (short of Approving the PR) of labeling them with an "hacktoberfest-accepted" label.
That should get them to 'count'

5:41 PM
really?
I thought that was at repo level.

does it shortcut the 14-day wait?
@this same

I don't think so
however, the 14 days wait can go beyond 10/31st. The PR just have to be made during October.

discusses the label I'm mentioning
Should save you some time

> Additionally, any pull request with the hacktoberfest-accepted label, submitted to any public GitHub repository, with or without the hacktoberfest topic, will be considered valid for Hacktoberfest.
#TIL
lol they even had pseudo code. I don't think it was there at the start of month
PRs count if:
Submitted during the month of October AND
Submitted in a public repo AND (
The PR is labelled as hacktoberfest-accepted by a maintainer OR
Submitted in a repo with the hacktoberfest topic AND (
    The PR is merged OR
    The PR has been approved
  )
)

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] IvenBach pushed commit 3a03d528 to next: Add toggle to hide ignored tests
Merge pull request #5602 from IvenBach/Issue5520_Ignore_tests_toggle

Add toggle to hide ignored tests

@this lol next year they'll put up a flowchart

they should have donet hat originally. we the meatbags are easily confused
thanks for "approving". now I can wait 14 days more for my shirt!

ditto!

and your friend, too, right?
:-D

6:02 PM
Must figure out 2 more PR for free no-financial-obligation clothing article.

Has anyone else been having issues with the XAML design time viewer?

I have.
it's retarded

At least it's not me.

long ago i wanted to fix up the color coordination but I can't see anything and the edit-build-view cycle is too painful

6:06 PM
I rely on it to visually grok what's going on but sweet-baby-jeebus does it complain needlessly that something isn't there when it is.

kind of tempted to make a fake XAML usercontrol just to use as "this is how it'll look all together"

well yeah but it's spotty
and there's still that the build-view cycle
very annoying
and I don't think it works with dynamic contents, unless I'm being dumb

6:24 PM
On the topic of XAML...Is there are good reference for using WPF/xaml? A recommended book is conspicuously absent from the 'Books on Programming' topic on RD's wiki.

6:53 PM
@BZngr my only read on the subject was "Pro WPF 2010", I... have 2 copies
come to think of it, I never finished reading it
but the parts I did read were enlightening

@MathieuGuindon Thanks! - I'll have to take a look. What I have found thus far has left me a bit wanting. (I doubt WPF ever makes into the '...for Dummies' series). And, I find that your MVVM posts are very helpful as well.

7:51 PM
It's.. a big, boring book there's probably a more recent print available though ;-)

8:02 PM
yes, .Net 4.5 by the same author

No it doesn't. Because as a good programmer, you are going to avoid it (and the next person who reads your code will thank you. :-) Case closed. — BigBen 3 mins ago
Shut down the pointless questions.
Too harsh?

8:41 PM
VS can't find the resource I just added? Change access from public->internal->public. Oh hey we found it.

Q: Using .text or .value for a TextBox in VBA

AlbinVBA hast to two ways of reading the value of a TextBox: result1 = UserForm1.TextBox1.Value result2 = UserForm1.TextBox1.Text I assume .Text will always return a string, but what exactly is going on with .Value? Since the content of a textbox is (presumably) a string it would just returns...
