@Cyril Winkey+D (Show desktop I'm assuming) will minimize everything, pressing it again will restore windows. Winkey+M will minimize everything. Winkey+Shift+M restores windows which I did not know TYVM #TIL.
@pond enjoy the weekend all. Out tomorrow for company activity. I'd rather keep my git learning spree going.

@IvenBach glad I could help something your way!
@MathieuGuindon just finished the “about class modules” blog; our convo the other day helped a lot for understanding jargon, and i may need another to better understand this before i reread the blog... on phone atm but will see if you are acailable when i am back to a keyboard
Porbably tomorrow

@MathieuGuindon I'm wondering if I should mention a little OSS project that deals with Excel on a LinkedIn comment. How OSS is promotes collaboration and the Excel community helps new learners. Don't want to drag you into any flamewars unintentionally though.
Would it bother you if I mentioned your name?

why, I'm listing RD on my LinkedIn page, no?
thanks for asking :)
I mean sure by all means go ahead

4:09 AM
I ask instead of volunteering you for something you don’t want.
> the road to hell is paved with good intentions.
‘But I thought you wouldn’t mind’ isn’t an excuse/reason I like hearing myself.

eh, I don't log onto LinkedIn much
I get the notifications and read them though :)

RD chat is as social as I get. I think our gen was already too old for social media before it was a thing.

@IvenBach FWIW, RD isn't just for Excel.... it almost sounds like you're referring to a different OSS project.

But Excel = VBA.
I only use Excel and often forget the others.

Hey, who's holding the crossbow here? ;-)

Crossbows now? We’ve moved on from 2x4’s then...

Figured it was high time to clean up the SO/SE of commies.

Cleanup at a distance.
No word from ComIntern still?

Q: Why was I just awarded a bunch of "Announcer" badges?

ruffinI just got a notification that I have been awarded a bunch of "Announcer" badges. I'm pretty sure I didn't just have 25 people hit all of these shared links, if I even shared them at all. Below is a screenshot of my inbox. Note the scroll bar depth and the number of sites. These are all from today—

I got at least 47 (mostly SO & CR), plus 2 silver ones.. notifications only show last 50... so maybe I got more than that

@Hosch250 Then I just need to login with @Duga...

@IvenBach very nice

@SimonForsberg Just need to remember her password, or something?

@Hosch250 I know the password...

1:37 PM
I wouldn't after 1 year, LOL.

I'm just reluctant to actually log out with me and log in with @Duga
Why can't mods change hats of users?

Open your browser in private mode?

@Hosch250 LastPass knows the password.

Ah. I use FF password manager for some sites.
I'm slowly moving sites to that.
I wish sites would implement a passwordless login.
Where it would basically be the "reset password" system, except they email you a one-time signin link.

2:14 PM
Wouldn't that be less secure?
That basically trust that your email wasn't hijacked

That's all that's required anyway.
All it takes to reset a password is access to the email.
This way, it would actually be slightly easier to recover an account after it was compromised.
It could be combined with 2FA, so you get a text on your phone too.

@FreeMan how has your experience been with using RD to export for Git source control? My own test leave me confident I can do what I need and now resolve any merge conflicts should they occur.

I... haven't.
I'm using OASIS-SVN from Access, and prior to that, I was using my home-baked import/export for both Access & Excel.
It was only in the last week or two that I realized that the import/export options were still in RD. I thought they'd gone when the git integration was removed.
I misread it as all of SC was removed.
That said, I've been using my own routines to import/export and using the command line git and haven't had any significant issues that really weren't of my own making (from ignorance of git).

Why then do I keep thinking you’re using git for SC?

Oh, I am using git.
I'm just not using RD's import/export tools - I'm using my home baked ones (from Excel) that prolly are about 10% as good as what's in the duck
OASIS is import/export for Access and has support for the TortoiseGit client built in, but still uses git as the SC
my comments were directly related to
> using RD to export
I'm not doing that in Excel. Yet.
one the code's out and free, I'm using git
Is that enough words yet to totally confuse?

Not quite, no.

@StackDuck that makes 27: another 63 and we can have tag badges on SO!

@BigBen Yes, it's awful that she said ain't! ;-)
@MathieuGuindon you know, we could just write & self-answer RD questions. ;-)

if only I knew what to ask!

pretty sure there's one for posting a self-answer

in theory that's the job of the /details pages :)

If this gets implemented, I'll eat my hat
because the next logical step after that, would be that Microsoft acquires RD

is hijacking the dialog an option?
thinking about it, it might have to be an Excel add-in to do that, not sure.

hm? I'm talking about the generated code
rather, the generated comments in the generated code

The idea is that if you intercept the hotkey or the command that opens the dialog, you can then provide a better dialog and also generate the annotation.

we're talking about different things

But then again, you could just do that from VBIDE with your own dialog. Less invasive.

6:06 PM
the macro recorder generates this kind of comment:
Sub Macro1()
'
' Macro1 Macro
'
' Keyboard Shortcut: Ctrl+a
'

oh.... Macro Recorder

yes
the hat-eating stuff would be to get MS to make the recorder generate this instead:

better put an egg on my face now, then!

'@ExcelHotkey a
Sub Macro1()

Yeah. Hijacking the recorder is whole different thing than hijacking the dialog where you set the shortcut.

6:08 PM
@this lol ...y'alls have such colorful idioms :)

FWIW, I've never seen anyone say y'alls

^ says the hat eater...
@this how 'bout "all y'alls"?

I think I've seen an all y'all but not y'alls in any form.
Or maybe I haven't spent enough time with hillbillies.

7:06 PM
l'uls y'all?

We are all "laugh out loud"s? What a concept!

Whatttttt? I never knew you could change the color. Guess I haven't played around with the VBE options yet. — BigBen 12 mins ago
lol @BigBen you weren't in chat here yesterday? =)

Apparently I missed that part

we'll have to sentence you to a thousand lashes with a wet noodle, then.
RD really should have a easy way to set colors. Meh. Wait for Avalon.
long ago, I saw someone write a small script to export & import VBIDE settings so that it was easy to reload your customization on another computer so you wouldn't have to deal with the crapatastic UX that is VBIDE's editor properties dialog.

Oh, that would be so wonderful!!!
(not that I reinstall and/or set up a new PC all that often, but still...)

8:33 PM
AvalonMentions++;

I’m still hopeful it will code itself miraculously one day.

well if it did, it's more likely that it'll launch a bunch of nuclear missiles and build killer robots. #JustSaying

8:53 PM
Interesting I think is that <> does a case sensitive comparison for strings. I looked at the language specification https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/openspecs/microsoft_general_purpose_programming_languages/MS-VBAL/a5a4bd2c-a89d-4e88-a634-40a8bca8d458 but this didn't tell me what kind of comparison is being done under the hood. Is it actually case sensitive?

it depends on the Option Compare

oh
What is the default if I haven't specified anything?

I believe in most hosts, you have no Option Compare, which defaults to Option Compare Binary

Google
Aha

checks

8:55 PM
That seems more likely

Yes:
> The Option Compare statement specifies the string comparison method (Binary, Text, or Database) for a module. If a module doesn't include an Option Compare statement, the default text comparison method is Binary.

Thank you!

AFAIK, Access is the only exception -- Option Compare Database means it follows the current database's collating order.
if you need to override this, you should use StrComp function which allows you to specify the collating order. That part seems to be undocumented, though but it works.

oooh.. treasure..... that is interesting to know

9:08 PM
Example:
?StrComp("Mueller", "Müller", vbTextCompare)
-1
?StrComp("Mueller", "Müller", &H10407)
 0
the &H10407 is the locale identifier for german locale. But I can't find the page that lists all locale ids. This comes closes but is missing the 0x10407

Code names only work if the sheet you're trying to access exists in ThisWorkbook (the Excel document that's hosting your VBA project). Is the sheet you're trying to get in ThisWorkbook? Or is the workbook opened by the macro? Or does the macro only get to run after the workbook is opened? — Mathieu Guindon 1 min ago
@MathieuGuindon - OP doesn't even have access to the computer/workbook.

I note that all identifiers are 4 hexadecimals, though. Yet, &H0407& doesn't work, so the high 1 is significant but not sure what it means.

we've been carrying on a mostly pointless discussion, since none of our suggestions can be tested.

@BigBen OP seems pretty lost

9:14 PM
@MathieuGuindon With a line like WB = Left(Application.ActiveWorkbook.Name, Len(Application.ActiveWorkbook.Name)-5)), unfortunately I have to concur.

Yes. The sheet is in ThisWorkbook. It's the only Excel document that is open during the macro. The macro is run after the workbook is open and the user runs the macro. — grace1997 11 secs ago
oh my

I voted to close the question as off-topic.
Unless you want to point out how to use the codename and avoid this debacle.

I would do IsError(cell.Value), no?

absolutely!
(thanks!)
@MathieuGuindon "Hack" = "Scott Craner" they are synonymous. :) — Scott Craner 18 secs ago
lol

9:26 PM
yeah made me laugh too

@AJD "they don't allow access to Access because people might build databases in them" - I'm sorry, that's hilarious. So let's block people from building actual solid relational local databases and make them hack up broken clunky local databases in Excel instead! Shadow IT: Origins, now playing in a theater near you. — Mathieu Guindon 6 secs ago

9:39 PM
probably the same type of company that caps password length at 8 characters

lots of them still running waddling around

@MathieuGuindon something something impostor syndrome

Recently someone went "halp! 64-bit Windows 10 won't run my 16-bit apps! It has been working for 25 years and HOW DARE THEY BREAK IT!"

You know what is even worse then capping password lengths? Validating that they are not too long when the user has enters them later.

9:50 PM
like on XBox 360!

I have that stupid problem with my Adobe suite I bought back when I still was a student.

once I locked my XBox out of my Microsoft account by using an actually secure password set from a browser. XBox 360 uses the same account password, but can't type spaces, and caps at 11 chars IIRC. I think they ended up fixing it on XBox One

The installer validates that the password for my AdobeId account is at most 12 characters long although it just asks a web service whether it is valid.

@M.Doerner yikes

Naturally, thre no longer is a restriction on the length for the actual account.
So, whenever I have to reinstall, I go twice through the password reset routine.
Once for not remembering that I had to truncate my secure password; then again because the new password is too long.

10:08 PM
"I think they ended up fixing it on XBox One" - words of someone who did not upgrade their 360 :p

nah, words of someone who needs to change their MS account password more often than once per decade :)

10:22 PM
needs pwd manager

10:32 PM
@MathieuGuindon careful, i'd imagine there is some middle manager in microsoft's security division who'd really try to get your mvp status revoked if they saw that

also how do you format text like that? is it the same as the comment markdown?

Yep. Well kinda
In chat you get to ---strikethrough--- too

really mega cool
nice
that should be in comments too though. its a useful rhetorical tool when not being abused by mediocre humor writers.
i guess the second sentence might explain why its not, of course :0

i try
