That is kind of a good news because that means we only need to care about files for the SC-like commands
without necessarily getting all tangled up in the SC implementation. (hopefully)

When working with source control, syncing from the repository can cause files to be changed externally. There is currently no mechanism in the VBE to detect such changes and sync them to the current project.

**Description**
For simplicity, this issue is limited to VB6, as it already stores files externally and lists them all in a project file. However, this could potentially be extended to VBA with additional work.

VB6 has no concept of external file changes, once a p

> All VBA projects internally use a symbol table that only allows up to 32K entries. This limitation can be hit in a large enough project and will produce unusual errors or refuse to compile. The inspection should count the number of identifiers declared within a single VBA project and if it's >30K, alert the users that they are approaching the limit and throw a red flag if it's >32K.

There's no examples nor quickfixes. The usual workaround is to split VBA project into a library project and r

When using the "export active project" function for source control, all files are dumped in a single folder - this makes navigation in Windows explorer or on GitHub more difficult. It would be good to specify a folder structure when exporting the project, similar to how RD is structured in GitHub.

**Description**
I think the best option would be to use existing folder annotations to dictate export directory. Folder paths would be relative to a specified root directory or

@FreeMan it's cos GH is dumb

A great craftsman always blames his tools... ;)

Exactly!

@FreeMan A good craftsman uses good tools. A great craftsman builds his own?

12:58 PM
No, I think it's more like a great craftsman borrows tools without asking and return it in worse condition than it was.

Many woodworkers do build their own tools, so there may be some merit to that.

@FreeMan From what I gather, most industries have those that do that.

@FreeMan they're machinists too?

Even surgeons design new tools now and then.
Although, I think they mostly use professionally made ones now due to liability issues :)

I can see them being involved in a design of a new tool but I'd sure hope they'd hire out a machinist to do the work.

1:00 PM
(And the fact that most surgeons probably aren't metal workers anymore.)
@this Now, but back in the day, it wasn't uncommon for them to build their own set.

Interesting. #TIL

Thanks MS. I don't know whether to laugh, shake my head, or be offended by your blatant, crass marketing...
I'm still struggling with connecting to the new server. SSMS gives me this error, so I clicked the "get help" link

When in doubt, do all.

This is where it takes me: microsoft.com/en-us/…

that's most likely a fallback landing page
because the original link no longer exists
Because you know how MS loves to move the cheese!

1:03 PM
I think that's just the home page?

@this because SSMS is such an outdated product... :/

Hasn't stopped them from moving the cheese. They do it a lot.

@this You can make a very effective cabinet scraper out of an old saw blade. It can get annoying to hold, so wood makes an effective handle.
And yes, long before you could pop down to the local big-box retailer or even the specialized woodworker's tool store, they would make their own tools. Sometimes working with the blacksmith for the metal bits, sometimes doing it themselves.
Loads of hand-made planes, lovingly passed down from father to son, still floating around out there.

Hm, that makes me worry -- how do I know a plane is going to plane and not tilt the surface or whatever?

@this How do you know that a store-bought one will?
FWIW, a lot of cheap brands don't have flat beds, so they are worse than nothing.
And you can use a straightedge and check that the bed is flat.
(Or whatever the bottom of the plane is called, if I have that wrong...)

1:08 PM
True, I wouldn't. The presumption is that a machined part would be more flat than a hand-made part, though.

And again, even a flat one will "tilt" the surface if you don't plane the whole board evenly or apply pressure evenly.
It's up to the craftsman to use the tool correctly, and even a non-flat plane can make a flat surface if used carefully.

Yes, it's the "bed". Some are actually convex on purpose. It allows you to plane smooth a curved surface like the scooped out seat of a Windsor chair.

Yep.
I do a bit of it myself, but I'm not up to speed on all the terminology.

you shouldn't call them planes then.
Surfacers, sure.

Plus, it's really easy to get the bed of your new plane flat - you plane it with your old plane!!

1:11 PM
Planes, no.
@FreeMan that has a "pull up by your own bootstrap" feel to ti

yes, yes it does... makes you wonder who made the original plane flat and square.

@FreeMan Or you could polish it with a flat diamond stone.
If it was metal.

Not many people had those in 1750...

That's actually how you keep sharpening stones flat too.
But, like I said, it's actually not so important to have the bed perfectly flat.

yeah. Flatten the older, cupped stone with a newer flat stone.

1:15 PM
It's more important to have good control of how far the blade sticks out.
If you control how far the blade sticks out, you can use a straightedge to find what needs to come off the surface you are planing and carefully work that area.

yup

In fact, some planes even the blades aren't made flat, even if the plane itself is.

and, once you've got a nice smooth, flat, straight piece of oak or mahogany, you can cut your new plane body out of that.

The jack plane uses a slightly cupped blade so it takes more wood off without tearing out.
Then you use a different plane to get it smooth once the jack plane has the piece roughly shaped.

1:36 PM
just had to read up to make sense of "planes" in the way it was used; i'm with ben on this: "surfacers" can make things planar
cross-surfacers are a great way to level; cross-surfacer is a tool with a grit base (modern folks just use sand paper), typically a porous cloth on the bottom of wood, where you add silica or diamond chippings with a lubricant and start polishing in a figure 8 pattern to ensure a planar/level surface. some very large cross-surfacers are turned upside down and you move the final product atop it (e.g., electrodes)

@this it appears that between OASIS & TortiseGit, there are no branch management tools. Am I missing something?

Not within OASIS, but Tortoise
e.g. you use Switch/Checkout which will then alter the working tree
you then need to do a import & delete to synchronize the objects contained in the Access file with the files in the working tree

interesting... I have \git\project\Forms\files.def. I added Create Branch to the top level context menu in tortoise settings - it only appears when I right-click on ..\project. That sorta makes sense, but it's sorta weird...
I guess you make a branch of the project, but I'd have thought that r-clicking on \git\project\.git would be the logical place for that

no

whatdoiknow

.git folder is hands-off
you don't futz with it unless you really want to get in the guts of git
you work with the \project, which is the working tree

1:59 PM
it would seem (to me) that would be a logical place for the create branch option to appear, but... whatdoiknow
.\project also makes sense. mostly, but not...
just something to get used to.

as mentioned in that blog, I usually keep the binary file out of the working tree, and have OASIS work one folder down (e.g. \project\source
then I can do usual git stuff in the \project\source
but handle OASIS import/exports via the binary files contained in the \project

are you the owner of the project? not sure if it's a settings issue, but for one of my projects on there i cannot touch the base project folder, only subfolders so the owner can move from dev to production, etc.

it's about 99.9% me

i believe i get an error with bash if i try to utilize the project folder

we have one other guy who wields a machete at the code a couple of times a year. If I make it complex enough, he'll eventually keep his hands off.
Not that I'm so special, but coding isn't his thing. It's more of a just because you can doesn't mean you should kinda thing...

2:12 PM
you can see the branch graph in Show Log, and cherry-pick etc from there.

I'm not even sure you need them if you do have parameters...

thank you, that worked just fine.
I assumed the parens were just as mandatory as ending the command prior to a CTE expression with a ;

2:50 PM
@this Can you elaborate on "import & delete". I don't see a single command that does this - is it a series of steps to delete all code, etc. from the project then import only what's in the current branch, or am I totally misreading this statement?

on the import dialog, there's a delete button
that will delete the existing Access objects for where the corresponding text file do not exist in the working tree
That is necessary to avoid your Access file still containing objects that shouldn't exist in this branch you just switched to.

3:21 PM
OK, VBA Experts... Say that you have a bunch of rows in an Excel document, with a column like this: 16:39-16:42,17:18-17:18,19:44-19:44,19:49-19:49,20:48-20:48, and you would like to count the number of minutes that overlaps with other rows, how would you do that?

I'd ask a question on an online forum somewhere..........

What's the structure of that data?
Is the 16: the row?
And the , row separators?

@Hosch250 It's a group of time ranges, such as 17:21-17:26 separated by comma
@Freeflow Please don't say Stack Overflow...

Oh.
OK, that makes sense now. So that is hh:mm-hh:mm?

Exactly

3:26 PM
And given a row, you want to find how many other rows overlap?
I'd probably export the data and use Splunk, or something.

The data actually comes from Splunk xD

LOL.
I don't know Splunk, but I've seen you bragging about it a bunch :)

If I could solve the problem in Splunk, I would, but I'm afraid that's very tricky because this data is already aggregated with a transaction and other fun stuff Splunk queries can contain (This is one of the more complex Splunk queries I'm dealing with at work)

Well, I'd probably do it roughly the same way I'd do it in C#.
Pull the data into the backend, parse it into a data structure, and go from there.
Of course, I'm no VBA expert.

The goal is to count the unique minutes that appear. I.e. if you have both 16:21-16:26 and 16:17-16:23, you should count 16:17-16:23 once.

3:30 PM
So you basically have a set of ranges that you need to find the non-duplicated values of.
So, what I'd do is first filter out any that are contained entirely by others.

convert it all using .value2, denoted by what a "minute" is in the time to determine difference between values

Then I'd merge any overlaps.
(If the values are small, you could just create a hashmap with an entry for each minute, actually.)
I'd recursively keep filtering and merging until I didn't have any overlaps/contains left.
It would probably be solved in 3 passes or less 99.999% of the time, if the data has that few entries.

another way I'd do this is to split the start & end parts into their own columns. Find the minimum start and maximum end date. Create a complete set of minutes from the min start and max end, then count the occurrences and then count where the occurences are non-zero.

may be simpler to use an array and sort, where arr(x,y) has the time as x and if it's a bound in your criteria y=1 for lower bound and y=2 for upper bound, so you can tell what is between ranges
simply pasting said array would show where outliers exist

@this That's roughly my hashmap idea.

3:36 PM
the array sort would just use stackoverflow.com/questions/4873182/…

So how to do this using VBA in Excel?
Also, is there a way to make it in such a way that it will work both with Microsoft Excel and LibreOffice ? (sorry, I am a newbie with VBA...)

I don't think LibreOffice has VBA?
I don't know VBA myself, but if it were me, I'd start by learning VBA control flow.

Maybe it doesn't, but they at least have a help page for it: help.libreoffice.org/6.2/en-US/text/sbasic/shared/…

Huh, OK.

@Hosch250 I'm planning to start by finding the "Write a Macro" menu option...

3:44 PM
@SimonForsberg @MathieuGuindon @this I need reinforcement!
He's going to use the macro generator!
More seriously, press Alt-F11.
That'll open the IDE, and you can start writing it in the backend.

Hmm... interesting

A: How do I make vba code compatible with libre office

RubberDuckFrom LibreOffice's online help file: With a few exceptions, Microsoft Office and LibreOffice cannot run the same macro code. Microsoft Office uses VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) code, and LibreOffice uses Basic code based on the LibreOffice API (Application Program Interface) environment...

Of course written by a real VBA Rubberduck.
@Hosch250 BAM! I'm in!
REM  *****  BASIC  *****

Sub Main

End Sub

I am not sure if this needs VBA at all
I think that can be done with Excel formulas
but hey I'm only a database guy

@this I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

The best line of code you could ever write is one that you don't write.

Doesn't the same apply to Excel formulas?

3:49 PM
@SimonForsberg wait hold on. ...you're learning some VBA??

well, those are more declarative than imperative.
kind like how SQL is better because it's declarative

i would say this depends how your data is set-up... if you can texttocolumns using "-" then you get your preferred ranges into two columns easier... then you can use formulas for your data column to determine if it's contained, and where false you flag and voila, done

^ yeah, something like that.

there's a button for texttocolumns, but i can never find it in the ribbons, so i always just write the code for it

under Data
said the not-Excel guy

3:52 PM
@MathieuGuindon No, I plan to be a help vampire and have you do all the work for me without me learning anything.
5
Either that, or just implement everything myself without learning anything.

@SimonForsberg oh, in that case carry on - Rubberduck will tell you everything you're doing wrong =)

@MathieuGuindon I'm on Linux with LibreOffice, don't have Rubberduck :(

psst.. you need a real computer!

But the code I'm planning on writing is intended to also work on Windows with regular MS Excel

this is one of those weird moments i would say to just open the file in googledocs and use c...

3:54 PM
(Yes, I like to shoot myself in the foot, OK?)

@MathieuGuindon like this?

if only there was a site to put your code up for peer review!

@Cyril I'd prefer to not use the cloud here, as it is for work.
@MathieuGuindon If only I had some code to put up! All I got now is this:
7 mins ago, by Simon Forsberg
REM  *****  BASIC  *****

Sub Main

End Sub

the formula suggestion would work for both libre and excel...

What's the VBA equivalent of "Hello World"? Or "Hello World with info in a particular cell?"

3:56 PM
@SimonForsberg REM is obsolete, use single quotes; also Main needs parentheses for the parameters list, and as it stands it's implicitly public
3

also it's kind of misleading. It implies that you have a main entry point. You don't.

@MathieuGuindon Why would I need a Rubberduck when I have you? :)

'*****  BASIC  *****'

Private Sub Main()

End Sub
Happy now?

Yeah... I'd advise against banner comments though, and you'll want Option Explicit at the top of the module

3:59 PM
I'm starting to realize how little I know of VBA. And how awesome Rubberduck must be.
2 mins ago, by Simon Forsberg
What's the VBA equivalent of "Hello World"? Or "Hello World with info in a particular cell?"

````
sub main()
'select your data to be separated
selection.texttocolumns datatype:=xldelimited, other:=true, otherchar="-"
'now compare if >=colA and <=colB (assumes your data was in colA to start)
end sub
msgbox("hello world")
<-- being that guy using selection and select... lol
@Cyril If the formula would just check "How many of these minutes have been mentioned in an earlier row?" it might be a good idea.
yeah, going freeform as we don't see the mock-up data. assumption was data to be analyzed is separate from your pre-determined ranges
i'm sitting here fighting word-vba while i read/respond to this... really hating passwords atm
you could just chuck the passwords.
it's useful as a screen door on a submarine.
@Cyril @this Relevant columns ^^
4:05 PM
@this that's ...the best analogy I've seen to date!
In this example, times such as 07:23-08:55 contain some duplicates for 2019-11-13.
@Cyril Selection in the Word object model has nothing to do with Excel's Selection. In Excel Application.Selection is a late-bound abomination; in Word it's a full-fledged early-bound object with actual members
@MathieuGuindon in word you use it for damn near everything, which really, really hurts... the fact that it's the preferred approach for headers/footers is difficult
the excel side, it has some uses, but can be avoided like 90% of the time
so yeah, i hear you
my sympathies... I have near-zero experience with the Word object model
@SimonForsberg that's your data set? makes me wonder if PowerQuery couldn't handle this...
@MathieuGuindon This is a data set. This is something that should be checked on a daily, or monthly, basis.
What's PowerQuery ?
4:10 PM
an expensive version of Excel
@MathieuGuindon that was my next thought after seeing it. the other option is to use consecutivedelimiter=true and collect the final usedrange as an array and put it into a 1-dimension array for sorting
(right? it's still an add-in you have to pay extra for, right?)
not anymore
@SimonForsberg the reason Excel crushes Google Sheets
powerquery is a freebie download, with not overarching support, so you have to ensure an appropriate connector for your specific api
4:11 PM
Oh Ok
#GTK
@this as far as I can recall it was always a free add-in until its functionality was incorporated as Get & Transform (2016 maybe?)
sounds about right, bb
@Cyril ... connector?
of course they had to change the name 20 times over
4:12 PM
hm. am I conflating it with something? I seem to remember some complaints because you had to pay extra to get the extra functionality.
back when PQ was in infant state, it was a pay to have for specific connectors that would embed it... that was a great model to sell people /wrists
> Microsoft Power Query for Excel is an Excel add-in that enhances the self-service Business Intelligence experience in Excel by simplifying data discovery, access and collaboration.
That tells me absolutely nothing.
#MarketingSpeak
Whoever wrote that probably never used PQ
connector = translator for a specific API. there are SalesForce connectors, SAP connectors, etc., which allow for simplified access via password screens, blah, with inherent hashing. many companies sell their connectors as addins for excel so you can have "every" user able to put in data without having licenses for the specific software
4:14 PM
@Mast Think Excel, then add a bit of Google, chmod and git to it.
Must've been someone in sales.
those are ancillary to PQ, which does the hard/actual work
@SimonForsberg I wouldn't know why you'd chmod in Excel, but the git is useful. Versioning in Excel would be mighty handy.
@Cyril My data comes from... Excel? Or possibly from Splunk. I'm staying as far away from SalesForce, SAP and others as I can.
@Mast The chmod would be for the "access" part.
those were just examples to make sense of the people who used to sell PQ within their specific connector addins
4:16 PM
So PQ would be something that every person who uses this spreadsheet would have to download? That's a big disadvantage.
What version of Excel?
I used to write some tricky Excel formulas back in my days, but I am not sure how I would write a formula for this.
regardless, a simplified approach is:
`columns(2).texttocolumns datatype:=xldelimited, consecutivedelimiter:=true, other:=true, otherchar="-"`
then `arr=range(cells(1,2),cells(lr,lc)).value` and find repeats, etc., by looping
@BigBen Unclear. The people who would use this have left for the day. I'm just the developer, but they are the ones who would be using this.
@this ah, thanks. It wasn't obvious from just browsing the options.
4:19 PM
@FreeMan well it's not exactly an option so it wouldn't be in the setting dialog.
@Cyril BASIC runtime error. Sub-procedure or function procedure not defined. :( (Might be LibreOffice spooking here)
frickin libre... i might be at a loss to help with that. have to make sure it's within a subroutine (sub test() // // end sub)
@Cyril Yeah it is in a subroutine.
  Dim oSheet As Object  : oSheet = ThisComponent.CurrentController.ActiveSheet
  Dim oRange As Object  : oRange = oSheet.getCellRangebyName("C2:D12")
That's how to do it in LibreOffice. Similar to VBA ?
@this #Words... :/ I meant the options presented when I right-click \git\project (i.e. there is no import).
On the OASIS-SVN | Import dialog, are you referring to the 'garbage can/question mark` icon when you say "delete"?
yes
le sigh. Why do software makers like to make themselves auto-launch at startup
Considering that I have 4 different conferencing / collaboration tools and I don't want to use them all...
4:33 PM
BECAUSE THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SOFTWARE.... IN THE WORLD...
why else would you have purchased and installed it if you didn't want it running all. the. time.
um, only purchased one of them. Other are free
still
umm... that didn't go so swell...
I now have an empty database.
:(
is the working tree empty?
and is it the correct path, also?
the network directory to where I have all my source... um... is empty now!
@SimonForsberg similar, yes; in not all cases are inline dimensioning and declaration appropriate
i'm wondering if texttocolumns isn't recognized by libre, though it would be by excel
not a linux user, nor libre ='/
closest i've come is being required to use unix on a mac back in ~1990
4:37 PM
I tried to check out branch master and it won't let me because project.oasis is there and untracked.
the .oasis file don't belong in the working tree
It's ok to have a copy of it as a template for other users but the actual one has to be outside the working tree's directory, with the Access binary file
carp. and all the files that I'd moved from project to project\Forms and project\Modules, etc are all now back in project
Try again?
originally I had:
\git\project
   .accdb
   .cls/.bas/etc
Then I reorged to:
\git\project
           .accdb
            \Forms
            \Modules
            \etc
and the .git is \git\project\.git?
4:42 PM
\git\project\.git <-- yes
Ok, that's the problem.
twas working OK from the cmd line... :/
you're mixing both non-tracked files and tracked files in same directory. While that could be done, that is kind of confusing
this is what I usually do:
I've got a .gitignore... :)
lol
/project/project.accdb
/project/project.oasis
/project/source/
/project/source/.git
/project/source/<all other files/folders I want tracked>
the project.oasis then has the working folder set to /project/source
(as noted in the blog, I use the relative path)
4:46 PM
ok, well step 1 is still getting all my source back from... somewhere.
you did commit whatever it was, right?
I guess I can move the project.oasis file, at least temporarily, to be able to checkout a different branch and see if it'll give me my code back.
I haven't committed anything since it all disappeared, but yes, I had prior to that.
whew! I can haz codez!
so I now have /project/project.accdb, /project/Modules/class1.def, etc. Whats the best way to move /project/Modules/* to /project/Source/Modules/*?
to emulate your recommended setup
@MathieuGuindon Is that because This is the End of the World as We Know It?
cut'n'paste in Windows explorer ought to be fine
@SimonForsberg except oRange is criminal
then let git figure out that they moved or do I have to move each one manually in git like I did to go from /project to /project/modules?
i think you have to add them and commit them
k. wish me luck!
good thing the boss brought in donuts. This might take two...
@FreeMan If everything is added, .gitignore will ignore the added ones you don't really want, right? So just add everything and see what happens.
@Mast but I didn't have the .oasis file in .gitignore. I guess I coulda done that, at least temporarily
lol
Yea, I'd add that to the ignore as long as you're not sure.
Having anything untracked simply makes git give up.
woulja look at that...
yet, if you want it included as a template for others cloning from the repo, then you might not want to ignore that template
not sure of the difference between Move and Move and rename...
@this "at least temporarily"... I just moved it away from the tracked directory. I'll put it back in a bit.
or, just follow your tutorial and recreate it from scratch. Wasn't that hard.
