> **Justification**
[This wiki page](https://github.com/rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck/wiki/Viewing-a-live-preview-of-parse-tree) recommends installing Eclipse and an Eclipse plugin in order to view the parse tree. Writing a debugging visualizer for Visual Studio is relatively straightforward.

**Description**
I would consider writing a custom debugging visualizer for this purpose (I've done [something comparable](https://github.com/zspitz/ExpressionToString#visual-studio-debugger-visualizer-for

> I would absolutely love to see this available natively in Visual Studio. Having to install Eclipse and getting the plugin is a huge PITA in itself, especially for those unfamiliar with Eclipse's idiosyncrasies.

I'm not 100% sure whether the same visualizer would be used between the Visual Studio (e.g. the contributors of Rubberduck project) and the Rubberduck's end users. I don't think the parse tree is that terribly useful to those unfamiliar with the ANTLR, and there are far much more no

I guess it indents fine in the VBE because the editor "autocorrects" it to `End If`.

@Duga @MathieuGuindon is that along what you and Vogel had in mind?

I'm stumped how to achieve that and IEquatable<T> at the same time.

?
what would T be?
I'd be happy with anything that has a Name and an Index, no?
actually, what is it that makes ToDoExplorerColumn specific to the ToDoExplorer grid in any way?

The DataGridLength Width but even that isn't specific.

exactly.. you've already solved the generic problem! ...just rename the class to GridViewColumnInfo or something like that :)

3:09 AM
I have the correct words coming out, but I'm not having it click internally.

derive that class from ViewModelBase

public class GridViewColumnInfo : ViewModelBase, IEquatable<GridViewColumnInfo>?

yup
and now you can call OnPropertyChanged(); in your property setters

monking!
I've got my ForEach Loop set up in my SSIS package. I've got an Execute SQL Task running a query and supplying a list of rows to the ForEach. It's assigning all the columns to variables per the instructions I followed here.
When I adjusted the connection in my flat file connection manager to use one of the variables, I'm getting this error:
> The file name """" specified in the connection was not valid.
You can see here that it's been cleared in the Connection Manager configuration.
However, I have the ConnectionString expression set in the Properties of the Connection Manager as shown here.
Have I totally missed something, or will the red X on the Flat File Source magically "go away" when the package executes and @[User::CompletePath] is populated with a valid value?
Note that the connection manager had a valid file name in it when I initially set it up, but it was set to "" when I edited the ConnectionString property - I didn't manually change it.

Is it preventing the build? If so just defer validation to runtime

I guess not!
Oh, as an added bonus - that red arrow in the last picture is the divider between the Solution Explorer and the Properties windows, both of which are in their default docked position on the right side of the VS window. It it possible to adjust that divider to make one or the other taller?
I can't find the correct spot in my attempts to hover...
(i.e. the cursor never changes shape to indicate "drag here!")

if you figure out anything simpler than setting up a SQL Server Agent job involving an SSIS Package Execution proxy user, a stored procedure in msdb that starts the job, and a stored procedure in a DB the VBA code can access & run... let me know, I'm interested :)
Care to share a little more detail on that and/or point me to some reading material?

hm. didn't I link to a blog article about that?

ah, yeah. that was a message or two down. Mah bad...
Unfortunately, Mat's suggestion of "defer" doesn't seem to be working. I've got those errors in the package noted above, and I get them still when I attempt to run.

Q: Show File/Folder Hierachy as Grouped with Indentation

PeterTI was intrigued by this question on SO and was able to come up with a reasonably efficient answer, but I'm interested in learning about further optimizations. You can certainly look at my answer to that original question for some explanations of how I've implemented certain logic, but I'm happy t...

If those are expressions they have to be deferred because by default SSIS eagerly validates everything, which it cannot.
I think you can do this at package level, too. I honestly can't remember if I disabled it at the task step or at package level.

Ah, ok, so defer is actually a setting. I'll go search & set.
that was almost too easy... Is this the one?

1:52 PM
Yes but I also think you need the other setting - ValidateExternalMetadata
I wonder if we can keep DelayValidation to true but only set ValidateExternalMetadata to false
That'd allow you to get compile-time validation of flow but not the validation of the format itself since you can't do it anymore if the file path is now an expression.
As an alternative, you could consider having a default value for the expression but it's a dicey proposition because if it is allowed to run and doesn't change the value to the desired expression, it might end up taking the default file used for testing and put it in production. That's not fun. :)

well, I set all 3 and it ran. Albeit with errors, but it ran...
I got several of these types of error messages:
> Error: 0xC001F009 at Package: The type of the value (DBNull) being assigned to variable "User::Result" differs from the current variable type (Int32). Variables may not change type during execution. Variable types are strict, except for variables of type Object.
that makes perfect sense - I'm selecting several columns from my "load this data" table which I'm planning on filling in as the load progresses. Therefore, I'm getting NULL to begin with.

oh yes. I love how SSIS variables can't be nullable.

I guess I can't put a NULL in an Int32 SSIS variable?
jinx

MAKES TOTAL PERFECT SENSE!

instead of selecting the Result column on the initial selection, I need to have a step that updates it afterward based on some PK value that I select and put in a var?
OK... lots of little fun things to learn...

2:00 PM
An alternative I can think of is to use a one-row ADODB recordset
which is questionable since the fields would be just Object/Variant
and you'd still have to do casting one way or other.

I still have all the work to do to assign result variables and put them back into the "load this data" table, so I guess I'll get there. I'd just like to know that it actually works!!!11!!11one!! on the whole looping principle first...

Actually I think that's why I ended up using a parameter table

@MathieuGuindon oh i had a primary key, it just wasn't clustered.

huh I didn't even know that was possible

While clustering on an identity is a good default it's not always the best choice.
if you have a table that heavily depends on say, IncidentDate column, and they don't correspond to the order of insertions, then clustering on the IncidentDate while keeping the identity as the primary key may mean better query performance for those that depends on the IncidentDate
But for most tables, the querying patterns aren't as clean-cut, so it's hard to pick a good column to cluster on, so hence why identity is a good default.

2:12 PM
well in my case, i DO look most things up by primary key

That doesn't matter
The main benefit of clustering is with range scan

well there wasnt ANY clustered index set
so i added in the clustering to the pkey, and then a second index on the second most used field
that is also unique

Q: Arrange Header's Data

PodI am working on a sheet of data with several headers and I would like to arrange each header in a specific column. Holy Carp!!! it actually works!!!11!!11one!!
My little looping package actually went through all my "data to load" rows and loaded the data for them.
OUCH hurts elbow patting himself on the back
now to update the "data to load" table with the appropriate statistics and mark the rows complete!

That's a neat idea! Seconded!

I think this `@CustomAnnotationForNonDuckyPurposes` warrants making `IllegalAnnotation` inspection simply ignore any annotation that isn't recognized as a RD annotation - note that this is different than the linked issue, where this was a parser-level issue.

@Duga and that DoEvents was a no-op line label

But DoEvents *is* recognised executed, as is, say, "Stop" and I guess other one-word statements.

There's no feature amazing enough to be worth the $1260 price increase?

2019 has a complete testexplorer rewrite

there's also the .NET Core 3 to consider. I'm not clear if they'll backport to 2017

.NET Core is a MSBuild thing. VS2017 should be able to handle it
we're also on the new csproj format already, so .NET Core should be working just fine

there are some saying they got it to work but as indicated it's not a supported scenario, so....

ohhhh. okay

also, I don't think we are actually using .NET Core 3 even for our build
