Oh come on, why don't the project IDs match up?
I bet ColorScaleCriteria gets imported from Office into Excel.
Anyway, why don't we generate one declaration per library containing the class?
We really need declarations with the correct project id.
Otherwise, the resolver cannot identify them correctly.
Whether and whith which priority items in class libraries get resolved depends on the refenced libraries they are exposed on and not the ones containing the original definition.

Is this the main chat room?
For code review?

This is the chat room for discussions regarding the Rubberduck VBE add-in.
The main room would be The 2nd Monitor.

@BananaCats Welcome to the pond.

> After experiencing this issue or something related while writing tests, I would like to add my two cents to this issue.

Whenever a library exposes a member of another library it imports, like apparently `ColorScaleCriteria` exposed in the Excel OM and not originating from Excel itself, there should nonetheless be a declaration for this class/member with the importing librarry project as project. Otherwise, the resolver cannot resolve the member properly, e.g. in cases where the interface fr

@MathieuGuindon You've done something to me Mug... Now, whenever I see bad code on Excel tutorials or website the vein in my neck sticks out and starts throbbing.

Must. Correct. All. Teh. Bad. Codez!
Some site suggesting the use of Range.Font.Color = ### instead of condition formatting for negative numbers.
And setting it within a For Each loop.
Sorry I just... hrngh... I'm starting to understand your frustrations.

4:04 AM
Wow @Tomamais thanks for doing this! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bggGsaPEpI

@IvenBach Wait wut.

This is why you just read the docs. Don't read tutorials or SO, just read documentation lmao.
how does it feel to have someone on youtube make a tutorial on your baby?

crazy awesome :)

@TweetingDuck Pssst! Get him to do the Portugese translations.

4:08 AM
lol IKR? he mentions at least 3 times anyone could go and contribute a Portugese translation! :D

@Dair Now that I know how to RTFM I do!
Wait you speak portugese too?

I've never heard a word of portugese in my life

@IvenBach Good. Let the docs flow through you.

I grasped about 10% of the words, but 80% of the meaning :)

I can read a fair amount. Hearing it I'm totally lost...
Have you realized yet Mug just how many people ducky potentially can help?

4:11 AM
it's starting to sink in...

That's why I'm so glad I found RD and the pond.

meaning, not completely :)

One day you're helping some kid learn VBA, the next you're helping NASA engineers land rovers on Saturn.

There's decades of code written that implicity accesses ActiveSheet or _Default without even knowing it.

it's a big boat to turn

4:15 AM
@mansellan Honestly, I love this.

Guess what, ducky is doing it. One code inspection at a time.

one download at a time :)

@MathieuGuindon it could be more than one download at a time since someone could run multiple code inspections :D

Would it be possible to create a code flow charting feature for Rubberduck?

Similar to https://www.aivosto.com/ but cleaner.

I've searched and not found any mention of such a feature in any tickets.

@MathieuGuindon Was not aware it can be hidden - or is that something we'd have to light up?

Reading the blog post, I guess the answer is that it's something we have to light up.
@BloggingDuck Love the plug for more translators! However, I should remind that we have an open issue to write an wiki article exclusively about how to translate - there were few stumbling blocks on getting started and how to do it.
I'd write it except I never have translated nor used the resource manager so.....

@this related #4338. I think atm we don't collect declarations for resource files and related documents, neither of which have code modules, but we need to.

Yeah but the question was whether those show up as a VBComponent object
without a CodeModule object.

10:50 AM
I really need to set up a "utility" add-in for VB6 to answer those kind of questions... WTF is the VBE object so difficult to get in VB6 </rant> lemme see what I can find.

yeah i found it weird that VBA was so easy to get the VBIDE stuff but VB6 is all "wut talking about, i see nothing"

> In principle, this is possible. The limiting factor is having time to contribute the code. This would easily be its own subsystem.

You'd also have to find a good flowcharting API to leverage. One possible idea would be to use [mermaid](https://mermaidjs.github.io/) which takes text input and outputs a chart, which avoid us to have to do the hard work of constructing a chart. The bad news is that it's JavaScript. Assuming nothing better can be found, we can just embed a browser control and r
> I have been using the latest version since PR #4769 was accepted and I just wanted to say that I am really happy with the change, it has made running my tests so much easier.

Specially now that I am going through a massive refactoring, and my unit tests being the only thing that really compiles on its own, it is very useful to be able to run all tests in a given module.

Thanks!

11:15 AM
@this so... exactly that. It's a VBComponent, shows up in the collection, but throws an AV if you dereference it's CodeModule property.

Fun times!
How did you get VBIDE in VB6, btw?

Have to create an add-in project

and to clarify - an actual AV? Like in crashing the studio?
not just a mere RTE?

Yep

O_o

11:20 AM
ikr...

@M.Doerner will want to know about that. ^

wierdly, seems to only be related documents that do that. Resfiles just don't show up in VBComponents...

Interesting.
Seems odd they'd bother with a ComponentType for it if it won't show up in VBComponents collection.
or maybe it's not enumerable but accessible?

possibly...
trying
having to do everything through a textbox atm, haven't worked out how to attach to the addin :-(

oof
it doesn't respond to Stop?

@this nope :-(
hmm so resfiles show up but I have OERN switched on atm, they're throwing something... but ttgtw :-(

Makes sense when you think about it - you don't want nincompoops debugging your VB6 addins.
Interesting. Thanks!

hey there @user9570061 I've granted you explicit write access.
Reload your browser tab to make sure the change propagates :)

uh. so I got an email from JetBrains. Back in Feb, I reported about incorrect language detection.
Today, they asked me if it's a caching problem and to restart VS to see if it goes away.

lul
didn't you even explicitly write into the issue that you did restart?

11:39 AM
gonna humor them.
Ah, unfortunately, no.
at least it's not in the issue tracker
I originally reported it via email? something.
and someone else created the issue
not sure if this is public: youtrack.jetbrains.com/issue/RSRP-473494

yes it is :)

there is more details in the correspondence between me and Olga not showed in that issue
but even so, I didn't explicitly say it persists between restarts. They say to delete the .vs folder. let's see....
and deleting the .vs cache did squat. Big surprise.
Took them a month to say "turn it off and turn it back on.", eh?

12:03 PM
@this there'll be a way to debug, I just haven't googled it yet

12:59 PM
> We really want to tighten our release cycle, so we’ll be shooting for the end of April for what should be version 2.4.2.
Is that right, Mat?
Also, anyone else notice the two words that comprise "success"?
"s***" and "cess".

@Hosch250 Ideally, we'd be more consistent on releasing new releases on a monthly basis

Yes, but this was 2.4.0?
Where did 2.4.1 go?

no, that was 2.4.1

Oh, right, my mistake.
I think I got thrown off by the previous post thing at the bottom.
I must've skipped the small text and just seen the name, or something.

@TweetingDuck Never not using no negatives to not confuse nobody?
@this @KySoto Is that something you'd be able to assist with? Since you helped out with the Czech translations? This isn't any push to do it, only a question.

@IvenBach i know... english, bad english, and... possibly some southern english.

My help was primarily to get it building and some general guidance based on what I saw from other translators. Not the same thing as actually doing it.

southern redneck english.

I'm a native English speaker and I'm one of the worst at the pond.

@KySoto did ya done git it a' the getting place?
@IvenBach I think this may fall flat on most folks accustomed to other languages where double negative don't cancel but intensify or are grammatically required. English is in the minority in that area.

4:28 PM
Now I'm thinking of a programing language where double negatives cancel.
Like !!something.

It's not like RD has a global audience or anything, right?

It really better be a false!

Better not be true.

need a programming language that throws compile-time error for double negatives.

ugh... so the EU decided to fuck the internet sideways today.

4:36 PM
@Vogel612 What'd they do this time?

Copyright reform.

Oh, that one?

Basically they decided to force platforms to have a prescreening in addition to the existing notice-and-takedown stuff

Bet UK is glad they are almost out.

UK probably liked that reform. What with them attempting to remove pr0n from the UK internet

4:38 PM
Oh. LOL.
Hmmm. Maybe they should just put a sin tax on porn sites.
All they need that way is a screenshot to prove they host porn, and the site gets slapped with the tax.

Sinful revenue to fill the coffers.

@Hosch250 that's at worst an inconvenience like the DNS redirect to a government site they have in place currently

> In a statement after the vote, parliament member Axel Voss — one of the key supporters of the new copyright law — said, “I am convinced that once the dust has settled, the internet will be as free as it is today, creators and journalists will be earning a fairer share of the revenues generated by their works, and we will be wondering what all the fuss was about.”
I like this guy. He's funny.
#TIL there's a German Pirate Party.

that dude is something I won't say here, but suffice to say it's colorful

Why can't US have something fun like a pirate party?

4:43 PM
@this yea they cropped up about a decade back, but internal strife made them sink into obscurity
interestingly the Piratenpartei is the spiritual successor to the green party

Any relations to the pirate bays website?

wouldn't be surprising...
and Germany is not the only country with a pirate party

IIR, that was based in sweden, though I'm sure they had multiple hosts in other places.

Sweden has one, England has one as well

while we're jazzing it up with elephants and donkeys.... awesome.
(though I think they got their mascots backward)

4:45 PM
@this considering that their policy suggestions include legalization, abolition of copyright and direct democracy...
apparently quite a few members there were IT folks.

funny how political a piece of software can get

piratebay, you mean?

well, not just that. They likely take some from others like Richard Stallman, for example.

@this Let's just cut off his internet now, mmkay?

that's pretty boring, is it not? Scihub, facebook, twitter, google, basically every website out there is political in some way

4:48 PM
let me rephrase that a bit.

@Vogel612 heh yep. that'll work...

licensing of the software -- copyleft -- started out as a way to share, but became much more political.

@Hosch250 not so sure we are... our politicians are being utterly useless atm

to a point where we're forming parties around those ideas.

FWIW, I use two licenses.
Unlicense if I want everyone to have access and don't care what happens.
Apache 2.0 if I want citation.

4:50 PM
@this see the whole lerna debacle

@mansellan I think "useless" and "politician" are tautological.
2

@Vogel612 not familiar - this?

yeap, exactly
they tried to prohibit the use of their FOSS by the ICE and related agencies as well as companies working for those agencies

So is JS like the hydra when you cut off its head another grows back?

4:53 PM
@IvenBach two, actually
yes. it is.

oh, my.
so they inserted a clause in their license "but if you're ICE, fork off" or what?
Seems to be a MIT license now

facepalm
oy vey

GH is not a platform for political protest...

^

5:02 PM
is anything ever?
aside from politics themselves that is?

Well, I'd say that Richard Stallman had enough sense to keep his political activities separate from GNU's copylefting activities.
the latter is more concerned with legal avenues than turning the software into a soapbox for anything outrageous

reminds me of rms.sexy (actually SFW)

Ooof. I hope RD doesn't get to that point.

I don't think anyone here would seriously attempt to enforce a political agenda with Rubberduck. Unless you count lobbying for a proper VBE as political

which would be ridiculous.
It's an asset owned by a private company.

5:07 PM
If they did, anyone could fork from the commit before the license change.

^ that

And because of GNU, they'd actually be able to copy down any other commit without the new license, IIUC.

Licenses are not a means to compel political change. That's just not something licenses can provide

^

@Hosch250 the problem is that the commit changing the license is legally void, because GNU explicitly prohibits that kind of change

5:09 PM
@Vogel612 More or less what I was trying to say.

Hmm. MySQL is GPL but it has a dual licensing model

which works fine, so long as each contribution is explicitly dual-licensed

@this sorry, fergot

since the original contributor can license however damn well they please

hmm I see. I had the impression that the dual licensing thing came later

5:10 PM
even if the licenses are incompatible, that doesn't make a difference it's like committing the same change to two repos with the dual license split
We could relicense RD if all contributors agreed. We'd need to redevelop the grammar and remove the smart-indenter affiliation idea, but that's about it
and at this point I'd actually be prepared to call the smart indenter folks for the RD implementation being a sufficiently separate "clean room" implementation
I mean... Comintern fixed multiple really frigging hairy bugs and we're not using the original VB6 source code for RD

Same. I didn't think we should even ask for their code back in the day.
I thought we should just do it from scratch.

I think the VB6 thing is more that they want a platform to keep their code accessible

We probably got a good bit of marketing out of it, so I think it probably was worth it

The grammar is a bit of a mess anyway. The real problem would be getting ThunderFrame to relicense his code, and the other contributors who disappeared.

as long we keep it there, I think that's reasonable, even if we no longer used any of the original logic.

5:15 PM
@Hosch250 to entertain the hypothetical: We'd need to ask his heir, most likely Victoria

As far as I'm concerned, you can keep my commits as GPL, or relicense them to MIT or Apache 2.0. I don't see it ever happening, but you have my pre-approved permission.

@Vogel612 TBF, that is an unsettling idea. Even setting aside the pain/grief, why involve in a complex licensing question for which the heir has no idea / knowledge?

5:56 PM
so....
im having the WEIRDEST crap
i cant get an insert query to fire
no errors
just doesnt insert the record.

just to rule it out, did you try DoCmd.SetWarnings True and re-test the code?
it's common to have code that leaks DoCmd.SetWarnings False without resetting it, which cause those weird behaviors.

i never set warnings
ever

Never say never.

ive deleted it out of any code ive ever had to deal with

Good. Still, it's a good sanity check to ensure it's not a factor. The next question is whether you are using dbFailOnError, right?

5:59 PM
i change the execution method to a query definition, and do querydef.execute
this one stupid project is the first time it has been dumb like this

still should take a dbFailOnError

the query is simple.
PARAMETERS cid TEXT (7)
	,dt DATETIME;

INSERT INTO dbo_Engineering_Trace_ProcedureChangeRequest (
	ChangeID
	,[Procedure]
	,DateOfRequest
	)
SELECT [cid] AS Expr1
	,"" AS Expr2
	,[dt] AS Expr3
all of the rest of the fields not listed have defaults or are nullable

and you're executing this how?

    Select Case argChangeType
    Case ctMasterChange
        sql2 = "qryVisualMasterChangeChild"
    Case ctProcessChange
        sql2 = "qryManufacturingProcessChangeChild"
    Case ctProcedureChange
        sql2 = "qryProcedureChangeRequestChild"
    Case ctDrawingChange
        sql2 = "qryDrawingChangeRequestChild"
    Case ctSoftwareChange
        sql2 = "qrySoftwareChangeChild"
    Case ctHardwareChange
        sql2 = "qryHardwareChangeChild"
    Case ctPCN
        sql2 = "qryPCNChild"
    Case Else

3 mins ago, by this
still should take a dbFailOnError
try qry.Execute dbFailOnError Or dbSeeChanges

6:03 PM
like
qry2.Execute dbSeeChanges And dbFailOnError

no
Or

or, ok.
i forgot which it was, i remember you guys said using + was bad mkay

yeah dbFailOnError + dbFailOnError =?!?, whereas dbFailOnError Or dbFailOnError still equals dbFailOnError

huh. run time error 3146

There ya go
whenever you Execute, you must always use dbFailOnError
or you just don't get those errors.
BTW, if you're just doing one-row insert, I might just do INSERT....VALUES, rather than INSERT...SELECT

6:08 PM
thats fair. looks like access is counting "" as a null
and thats why all of my stuff started breaking everywhere

do you have AllowZeroLength property set?
if it's Required=Yes & AllowZeroLength=No, then you can't insert ""

6:22 PM
i dont think AllowZeroLength is a property on sql server
how would you change that property on a linked table?

Sorry, assumed Access backend incorrectly
However, if you did use SSMA, it might have had imported that property as a CHECK constraint.

Its ok, its all too common

did you see the actual ODBC error?

yeah
mother effing...
so it looks like one of the bit fields didnt have a default set
-_-
and thats why i was going to delete those stupid fields -_______-

@KySoto Muahahaha

6:28 PM
so the reason those dumb fields are still there is because im transitioning from having 7 copies of 11 different fields
in the data tables, to moving those fields to the header table
precisely because of these kinds of errors.
-_-

you know, if there are bits w/o default, it might pay to write a SQL script to locate those problems
instead of finding it via VBA RTEs.

6:47 PM
@this SSMA = ??

i suspect he means SSMS
@this i actually thought i had gotten them, but to be fair, there were very very limited circumstances where the errors could have been triggered, and they were really only triggerable because of changes in the InDev copy of the application.
i finally pulled the trigger and deleted hte fields that didnt need to be there, and i think im good

No, SSMA= SQL Server Migration Assistant
(there are few SSMA flavors; one fro Access, other for Oracle, etc.)
