@Hosch250 I'd definitely ask for PayPal. An international transfer will cost you about $20, and there's no guarantee that you'll ever see the item. PayPal is free (for you) and you should get some protection should the item fail to arrive.

True, the bank transfer will cost you, but you can get it for $5. They are probably not even aware that there are costs for you. Inside the EU, bank transfers are free of charge.

@Hosch250 You posted at1AM German time. I was fast asleep back then. :) (Don't know about Vogel and Max, though. Are there others?)

I'm surprised to hear there are fee. Even from France to Québec I only paid the change rate (which was in favor of the bank of course, but not by much)

Q: *VBA* - Refer to two words in one string?

Tino PeterssonThis might be a stupid question, so I apologize in advance. I am very new to VBA and coding in general. And THANK YOU! For taking your time to help me out. @FlorentUguet Was it a payment or an actual bank transfer?

Payment

Payments are usually no problem, especially if it is a credit card transaction. If there are costs, they are billed to the receiver.
Anyway, most payments from inside the EU are processed through a company with a branch inside the EU.

1:02 PM
@Inarion I knew you guys would (mostly) be asleep.
I asked if he could do it with PayPal instead.
Oh, he already responded, in English :)
He said they don't have PayPal, and asked for a transfer again.
Not sure I'll do it.

Q: Merging the excel-vba into vba - speak now, or forever hold your peace

Shog9This particular debate has gone on a bit too long... Duplicates dichotomy: [excel-vba] vs [excel] + [vba] Tag editor extraordinaire User on tag-edit spree for 2+ days... [excel]+[vba]=[excel-vba] Synonymize / rename [excel-vba] and others to [excel-automation] / [excel-activex] / [excel-objects...

On a related theme Excel vba versus Access vba etc . It's the same language isn't it. And basically the same syntax. Just different methods and properties and classes... Or am I horribly misguided? #Crisis of Faith

It is the same language. All current hosts should use VBA7. The difference is the object model.

No madness (further) on my part then.
Your thoughts on the tag debate?
I am guessing @MathieuGuindon will see the post at some point.
Is it saying this is will be the final decision on the matter? Seems to have been discussed a lot before.
I think the compound tags are useful.
Just that people don't tag properly.

Were it up to me, an education on the users' part is needed. They should be tagging vba and excel, and maybe even excel-object-model.
but even just vba and excel serves, IMO.
they need to understand the distinction between a OM and a language.

@this Yup. I think that links with the correct tagging. My take was the specificity of Excel-VBA should be a good thing for selective Q&A
It gets messed up by the quality of tagging.
@Zoe hi! Welcome to the Pond
I just brought the tagging question up in here.

This is an perfect example....
> As anyone who knows vba will tell you, there are immense differences in syntax between word-vba, excel-vba, powerpoint-vba, and outlook-vba - before answering any questions, you have to know what parent program they're writing from!
No, the difference isn't syntactic yet that's what they tend to think.

It is differences in methods, properties, classes available isn't it?
Otherwise, I would have a much harder time going from one application to another.

Yes, it is the object model.
The syntax is exactly the same.

Zoe
@QHarr o/

2:14 PM
I very much like the proposed change.

\0/ @Zoe If you have a vba question in relation to that post here is a very good place to ask!

Zoe
I think I have everything I need now

The problem with the current situation is that there are two possible ways to tag a question as vba related in Excel.

So, on a scan it is not saying remove Excel-VBA but also have Excel and VBA if either of those are not also present, correct?

and the more ways there is to do something that's the same, the more confusing it'll be.
Well, more that they'll replace excel-vba with excel and vba
so we end up with only one way to specify a Excel VBA question... adding 2 tags excel, vba, done.

2:17 PM
Oh.... that is more of a pain in my opinion when it comes to selecting questions (not minding tagging quality)
If I just want to target Excel-VBA....
Will I use [EXCEL][VBA]? And achieve the same selectivity?
*Lack of knowledge showing

yes and it'd be even better because before, you'd be missing any questions that had excel-vba and would have had to do a 2nd search to cover the questions tagged with excel-vba but not with excel and vba. Now you only need to search excel, vba and you'll get them all

If I don't want all but I want VBA in Excel environment does Excel,VBA not bring back too many records?

?

In the new world order...how would I select only questions pertaining to using vba in Excel?
@this Sorry, I am struggling to explain myself. I do realise.

you'd just search the questions that has both tags excel and vba

2:23 PM
Ahh!

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit 9b9d7ee4 on unknown branch: AppVeyor build succeeded

Sorry...my lack of familiarity...

@QHarr Note that even after such a change as this is implemented you can still search for questions that have both tags by searching for [excel] [vba] - stackoverflow.com/questions/tagged/excel+vbaTylerH 16 mins ago

[rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck] build for commit 9b9d7ee4 on unknown branch: 52.6% (target 0%)

@Duga sweet!

2:24 PM
@this This is what I was trying to understand in the syntax of tagging. Does [Excel][VBA] == [EXCEL-VBA]

no no no

:Puts Dunce hat on...turns to corner:

he's saying that if we accept the proposed change to change all existing questions' excel-vba tags into the excel, vba, you still can search for all questions that way.
the way things are right now.... you must do 2 searches
one for excel-vba and another for excel, vba because some people might have tagged their question using latter tags and others with former tag.

Ahhh.... dawning of understanding...

the proposal is to replace the excel-vba with excel and vba so that there is now only one way to codify such questions, and therefore, search for those questions.

2:27 PM
@this So, you think it is better because this will make retrieving appropriate records more comprehensive?
Could I guess improve tagging quality as well to some extent....

Right. Everything should have their own places and there should be only one place for each thing.

@this Thank you for clarifying as usual.

@QHarr done :)

@MathieuGuindon I shall go read now
Is this "Not" that an Excel .. Note?

not sure, does it read weird?
fixed

2:38 PM
> AFAICS, there's no ability to watch an intersection of tags (I'm not using the feature so I don't really know)
is that true?
that might be a dealbreaker

Zoe
[excel][vba] in search only finds questions with those tags

yes, that was obvious from the other comments as I was telling @QHarr earlier. But does watch work the same way?

I don't know what watch is I'm afraid.

Zoe
2:40 PM
equivalently, [vba] -[excel] searches for all questions tagged VBA, and not excel. You can also ignore tags to have the VBA feed only show questions related to i.e. VBA in Excel (assuming they're properly tagged of course)

@this you mean the "favorite tags" thing?

I think so, I"m trying to find that setting.
the one that highlights the questions

Zoe
Favorite tags are now watched tags

I don't see what the problem is

huh. on CR it's still "favorite"
from what I understood from that poster, you can't set up your favorite tag to be exclusively excel and vba; it'll be a union of all questions with either tags.

2:45 PM
@this Probably part of the new design.
Hi, @Zoe AKA Princess Luna!
@this Correct.

Zoe
Hiya Hosch!

Ah.... ok.... I have never put a favourite tag.

@QHarr I watch C#, F#, and Rubberduck on CR.
It gets the union of them, not the intersect.

That makes sense. Can you specify intersect using And?

NAFAIK.

2:47 PM
and that's a big problem for VBA-tagged questions, IMO. Most users are going to be interested in one or other host and only want those highlighted, I'd think?

You just add the tags to an input field.

IMO that's a user problem. If you can follow , then you can answer - or at least suffer to see, the and questions. Chances are, the Word-hosted VBA question is about some global variable or some array construct or loop syntax error, and Word is irrelevant and anyone that can answer a VBA question should get to see it.

@MathieuGuindon Go read the answers on that question :P
The excel-vba guys were whining about it.

There are quite a few VBA in Word questions that I would not want to see... but I guess so long as I could see the Word tag I could scooch on.

3:02 PM
IMO if you can answer a VBA question, then it doesn't matter what the host application is. If you're writing "PowerPoint-VBA" and tag it as such when you have a question about how VBA the language works, i.e. you're having a problem with some part of the loop syntax or arrays or whatever, then your question will be getting fewer eyeballs just because it's not tagged with "Excel-VBA", yet 100% of the "Excel-VBA" crowd would be qualified to answer that "PowerPoint-VBA" question. The host/libs only matter if the question is about that. — Mathieu Guindon 51 secs ago

I guess my fear is just around I don't know the Word object model so questions for VBA Word that I could help with would be things like control structures. Less specific to the application.

doesn't hurt to eyeball the question though. I mean, I don't know the access or word or powerpoint object models either, and yet..

OTOH, if you learn more about other OMs, the better you get at your own OM.
IME, I've consistently found that answering a question that's tangent to my interest, gets me learning more about my interests than what I'd have if I stayed within my domain.

Very true.
I don't know why Word is the one I have avoided in particular.

For some reason, this recalls me of that saying...

3:28 PM
Howdy! Could someone please explain the magic behind github.com/rubberduck-vba/Rubberduck/issues/2592 ?
How does TextBox implicitly implement IControl ?

IIUC MSForms types are basically built at run-time.. it's mind-wrecking.

wut
How does the .net interop work then?

huh?
MSForms != WinForms

yeah
I'm talking about UserForms in VBA
Accessible from VBComponent.Designer

ah
you have to cast the designer controls, basically

3:32 PM
Doesn't seem to work, at least not with NetOffice.

I wouldn't expect a 3rd-party type lib to work for anything more than the more general use-cases
e.g. Worksheet & Range
when things start involving ActiveX in MSForms, wheels come off

I have no choice since no PIA exists for Office 2002, AFAIK. Plus from my experience they seem very unstable.

use a PIA for Office 97-2003, no?
@robodude666 what are you casting it to?

Looks like the official Office 2010 Interops have a LabelClass CoClass that implements IControl interface.
PIAs don't exist prior to Office 2003, but the 2003 one doesn't seem to work for 2000/2002 for me.

FYI it's common for COM classes to implement additional interfaces and not expose them directly.

3:37 PM
Sorry; casting what?

@robodude666 "Form Controls"? or ActiveX?

Form = MSForms

for example, several controls must implement IOle*** interfaces but you won't see it in one of its hierarch(ies). I imagine same thing would happen w/ IControl interface.

"Form Controls" => Excel.TextBox & the like
MSForms => ActiveX

3:38 PM
those are Office Controls

aka not what you'll have on a UserForm
i.e. your VBA project doesn't get a new library referenced when you add these controls onto your worksheet

Yeah; i'm referring to FM20.dll

ok that's the one

"Microsoft Forms 2.0 Object Library"

yup, that's the UserForm library

3:40 PM
Yeah; that's the one that has some magic.

NetOffice has a wrapper for that one?

It does, but they don't implement IControl
so you can't access any of the basic properties like position, size, etc.

FM20.dll doesn't appear to be doing it either - and yet... the members are there

agreed; that's why I'm curious what magic microsoft is using

because it's a separate hierarchy.

3:42 PM
but how does the Label or TestBox control's coclass know about IControl if there's no mention of it?

@ThunderFrame was investigating them at one point

a C++ class is free to implement several COM interfaces and not provide any relation between those.

doesn't the IDL need to show that it's implementing that interface?

for same reasons you can't see IOle*** interfaces but they're there (they must be, otherwise they wouldn't be a control).
Nope.

Why?

3:44 PM
Good question. I'm not 100% sure why but it is. @WaynePhillipsEA might be able to explain that point better than I can.
but you can cast one to other.
The problem w/ COM, however, is there is no mechanism to enumerate all interfaces that the underlying object support.
You can only QueryInterface for each one.

How would you do that? When I try I get a InvalidCastException.
I know .NET 4.5 significantly improves dynamic COM stuff, but I'm required to use .NET 4.0 for Windows XP support.

so if you can do in VBA something like Dim c As MSForms.Control : Set c = Me.MyTextbox, assuming it's a UF with a MSForms.Textbox control, then you can cast.

^ in theory

that throws an error, at least when using NetOffice.

IDK about NetOffice.

3:47 PM
try with Microsoft.Vbe.Interop.Forms.dll?
IIRC there was a reason we didn't use NetOffice, and it had to do with a bad implementation of the VBIDE API wrappers

if that's no good, you could look at Marshal.QueryInterface to do the low-level call.

I'm sure it'll work because microsoft implements IControl methods, but there is no interop for office 2000/2002 AFAIK -- at least I've never gotten it to work for office 2000, 2002, and 2010.

I believe that's what Wayne does in the typelib API

I'll take a look at it.

hmm. wait, so you are saying that works for other but not those 3 versions?
2007 works but not 2002 or 2010?

3:49 PM
I haven't gotten a single interop assembly that works for versions older than 2003 AND newer than 2003.
I've built custom interops for 2000/2002, but they crash in 2007/2010.
Alternatively, maybe you guys know why a few bytes of the .frx file always change on export even when nothing was modified?

heck, the .frm changes on import ...doesn't surprise me that .frx changes everytime the VBE touches it
ditto with the .vbp references in VB6

hm
I've noticed that the byte after a font name is the only thing that changes in the frx binary
no idea why

could be a bug, could be that the world gets swallowed into a black hole if they fix it

latter most likely

i wonder if it's an internal version control
to guard against file corruption
something like a checksum
@MathieuGuindon did you use VSS in your VB6 days?

3:56 PM
SVN

Smart boy

still constantly conflicting whenever .vbp was modified

i was just wondering if VSS (or maybe SVN, too?) would have ignored that.

i.e. whenever a new module was added
the order of references also seemed to change randomly for no reason at all

woah, what?
that would break the codebase
it has priority, right?

3:57 PM
oh and whether they were 8-char paths or full-length was randomized, too

hey, I noticed that too!

i guess in those days, SCC and file consistency wasn't high on their list of priorities.

and quirky fixes were considered normal.

@this possibly... although I didn't know that much back then

3:59 PM
FWIW, I'm trying to generate a hash based on the UserForm's properties and properties of all controls in order to determine if the form actually changed to prevent an unnecessary frx from being exported.

(learned that working on RD)

Don't know if there's a better way of doing that though.

you need to talk to @ThunderFrame, IIUC he's got 98% of that work done, somewhere

hmm

@MathieuGuindon thinking about it, I think I overstated the impact --- it'd only break if the programmer is careless to not disambiguate the object types.
idk if a ordinary vb6 programmer will use 2-part naming. I do not see that very often from those who do VBA.

4:03 PM
		,[IsActive]=SWACTV
	from [SERVER].[DB].[dbo].[ARCUS]
	where (@includeInactive is null) or (@includeInactive = 0 and SWACTV=1)
ok this is driving me nuts rn
@includeInactive is a new parameter I'm adding that needs to default to null and a null value needs to not break the current behavior, which is to select all accounts regardless of their SWACTV value
the above works for null and 0, but 1 yields no records

if you mean @includeInactive = 1, then of course that's no records.

facepalm

isn't it more typical to write queries like so: WHERE (@includeInactive IS NULL) OR (SWACTV = @includeInactive)

yeah but that would break the current behavior
SWACTV is 0 for an inactive account, 1 for an active one
@includeInactive=1 means "give me both"

but the @includeInactive defaults to NULL, which is "both"

4:08 PM
yeah, so both 1 and null to the same thing
totally rubberducking this right now

you say current behavior is to return all records, irrespective of the value for SWACTV

when @includeInactive is NULL, that's what will happen

correct

when @includeInactive is 0, you only get those SWACTV w/ 0
likewise, 1, 1
actually the name sucks
should be named to @inactiveFilter or something like that.

4:09 PM
yeah it's kind of flipping the field's logic

but the pattern WHERE (@x IS NULL) OR (c = @x) is the typical design pattern for making an optional parameter that allows you to select all or a specific subset.
caveat: this pattern only works as long the column c is non-nullable.

is it wrong to want the calling code to drive what the querying API works like?

if you need to support filtering on null for a column then it becomes: WHERE (@shouldBeFiltered = 0) OR (column = @filterValue), with 2 separate parameters.

but it's not a filter

? then what's it's doing in the WHERE clause?

4:16 PM
given a 1, I need to return both 0 and 1, and given 0/null, I need to return just 1's

and you must preserve that behavior?

it's weird as hell to send in 1 to expect 0 and 1 out
I see.
and yes, that'd be wrong (calling code driving the API behavior)
If it's a public API, the best recourse is likely a separate endpoint and force them to use it if they want the new behavior.

huh IOW using a SP as an abstraction layer is wrong?
client is an excel worksheet
that order form mammoth project

no I was thinking of C# middle tier DLL that invokes a stored procedure.
OK
so you own the project

4:19 PM
yes

why not change the calling code then?
don't make it weird and send 1 in to get 0 and 1 out

because the VBA is much clearer when it says "exclude inactive accounts", which is the exact wording in the JIRA ticket

so, SP should be using @excludeInactive then?

dang, that's right

apologies. GTG

4:21 PM
thanks!

Anyway, there is never anything preventing you from applying some indirection to translate from the needs of the calling code to the parameters of a sensibly written stored procedure.

You forgot all the Jon Snow references you made, @MathieuGuindon.

it gets annoying, to raise flags, scream at the top of your lungs that something isn't going to work, explain why it's not going to work, and then they still go through with it, and then 8 months down the line it hits them and they're like, oh, let's reverse that

@MathieuGuindon Are you working at my company? :P
Also, found some old posts from when I was car shopping about driving in the snow.

@Hosch250 lol, typical right?

My Escape with a 1.4 liter engine can handle it just fine--as long as I don't stop in a bank 4+" deep.
That's the one time I got stuck. I used the far-right unplowed+untrafficed turn lane, lost the light, and got stuck.
@MathieuGuindon Yep.

It's even worse when you don't have windows at work. I'll go days sometimes where I only see the sun for an hour over lunch.
