@Feeds I'm still sub-5-digit unread messages in my gmail account (last time I looked), but I've got over 2000 unread emails on my ProtonMail account already. Nice to know I'm not the only one.
I do try to check gmail once a month or so looking for legit email in spam (which is only 1 of the reasons I abandoned them)

Resume into the middle of an If... End If is a bad idea by default, isn't it...

1:59 PM
I think it would usually be a bad idea...if the error can only be generated within the If... End If - then maybe not so bad. Maybe the If... End If content needs to be extracted to its own function with error handling.

2:11 PM
"extracted" <- most definitely... :/

PPTObj = PowerPoint.Application
'do inhumane, arcane, unholy things with PPT that probably shouldn't be done
PPTObj.Close
Everything executes without error, and yet, I'm left with a PPT window showing. Why is PPTObj.Close executing without error, yet not actually closing the PPT application?

@FreeMan 2 reasons I can think of:
1) it's actually Quit, not Close. I don't know that for a fact but wouldn't be surprised if they did something silly like that.
2) you still have a dangling reference to one of the objects. For example, if your reference to a ppt slide object is still alive, it can't close.
@this lol
it doesn't list Close, either.

3:00 PM
Carp. It's PPTPresentation.Close and PPTObj.Quit. I've got it correct in actual code, just fat fingered in M vc E
OK, it's probably option 2). Wonder what's changed that is causing a dangling participle... :( I haven't changed code here in quite a while.
Guess I'll have to rummage about and see if there are any PPTObj.Presentations open and close 'em all before quitting

you may just need to set them to Nothing
it just occurred to me that I don't think I've seen (or at least don't remember) seeing a dangling participle outside an English classroom.

thanks for playing the home game :)
Getting the dad jokes fired back up. Just heard from the eldest... He, the wife & 2 kids are coming home for Christmas! Very excited - it's been 18 months since we last saw them

3:17 PM
in spite of (or because of) the stay-home orders? :)
there seem to be lot of wannabe tinpot dictators who think they can tell everyone to stay home for holidays....

A bit of both, but mostly because it's been a long time and they need to get back and see family. They'll have to jump through all kinds of stupid, flaming hoops to get back into the state of Alaska. He's pretty fired up because he thinks he'll basically get 2 more weeks of vacation. Even with a negative test, he may have to quarrentine for 14 days.

are they driving or taking the boat?

And yes, the world has fallen victim to a few unelected, unofficial tinpot dictators who have "MD" after their names.
they're driving to the boat with wings.

@FreeMan and a few more who don't but were somehow elected.
@FreeMan LOL. I assumed they weren't flying because you mentioned flaming hoops and I ass-u-me-d that it was because driving or taking a boat would be more complicated than flying since you'll have to go through the customs.

tinpot, crackpot, very fine line betwixt
nah, there are plenty of stupid state regulations about travel. Heck, my employer imposed a quarantine back in Mar/Apr for people who'd left the state. Because going to New Albany and back home is so much different than going to Louisville then back home...
Private Sub CleanPptShutdown()

  Dim Present As PowerPoint.Presentation
  For Each Present In PPTObj.Presentations
    Present.Close
  Next

  PPTObj.Quit

End Sub
PPTObj.Quit executes w/o error yet leaves an open PPT window
a click of the x (since there doesn't seem to be a File | Close anymore>:() works w/o error or issue

3:25 PM
that wouldn't help anything if you have a (for example) global variable of a PowerPoint.Presentation type or something like that.

ah... I need to do a set myPresentation = Nothing somewhere along the line, then?

Yeah

or Present.Close : Set Present = Nothing as it were...

esp if they have longlived scope like public variables or being a member of a class that is referenced by something else that's also longlived

Weird, I've never needed to do this in the past. This has been running for best part of 6 years w/o issue. Wonder what got changed...

3:28 PM
hm, now you mention that fact.

Don't think there have been significant code changes, but this could have been due to a change 6 months ago that I don't recall... This is a quarterly report process so it doesn't get executed all that often.

you can't put it past MSFT to change something, either.

no, no you can't...
le sigh...
yup, set presentation = nothing seems to have done the trick.
@this is my thanks!
fudge nuggets! Now Excel is staying open!!!!! >:(

I'm hoping MS changed something. Set workbookobject = nothing solved the excel.application not closing issue, too.

sure sounds like a regression
long ago, I understand there was indeed a bug with one of the DAO object and the workaround was to explicitly Set foo = Nothing since the Close wouldn't actually release the ref count. That has been since fixed but for that reason, you have some old timer Access developers dogmatically state that you must Close and Set ... = Nothing everything under the sun!
Once bit, twice shy, I guess!

4:55 PM
@FreeMan It under version control for git diff commit1..commit2?

5:34 PM
Microsoft really has a way of making things really annoying

@IvenBach Yeah, but I'm not sure what the heck I'd have changed.
I'm not motivated enough at the moment to track it down since I've got it "fixed"

Q: Excel VBA Sub not executing when target cell is filled with reference cell value

CommodePreviewThis works great for what I want want it to do when I manually enter the value for "b37" but when I put "=c20", for example, into "b37" nothing happens. How do I make this work for when the value in the cell referenced, "c20" changes instead of manually entering a value for "b37"? Thanks! Sub Wor...

@QuackExchange Go away, broken code, you belong on SO!

@M.Doerner Leaning on VariableNotUsedInspection to aid comprehension, I override ResultDescription. I still don't understand what IsResultDeclaration is.

11:14 PM
@FreeMan post was lacking details for Stack Overflow, and even when you cannot vote to close, you can flag to close.

11:48 PM
Just occurred, do we already have an EmptyEnumerationInspection?

does that even parse?

Haven't tried. I spoke without checking.
Won't even compile. No need.

@IvenBach IsResultDeclaration is supposed to return true if and only if the declaration provided as parameter is a result for the inspection.
Is gets executed for all user-defined declarations of the declaration type(s) provided to the base constructor.
Basically all the work necessary to find the declarations of the right type and generating the inspection results got extracted into the base class.
