@TweetingDuck I’ve always wondered how much I’d benefit from going to one of these. I still feel like I don’t know as much as I should regarding excel.

1:08 AM
@Mat'sMug Value2 can never return a Date or Currency type:
> The only difference between this property and the Value property is that the Value2 property doesn't use the Currency and Date data types. You can return values formatted with these data types as floating-point numbers by using the Double data type.

@ThunderFrame gah, mixed them up lol

^^ which would be much more easier to write an inspection for
Stop using Value, you braindead idiot. You should be using Value2 because it's made for morons like you.
or something like that.
:p

@this that would definitely be beneficial ...to me
I keep using Value just because Value2 looks wrong

not just you; but everyone.
I have to be honest, though. I'd instinctively go for Value, too
I'd have be slapped on the head to remember that Value2 is better.
In Access, we have Recordset2 and Field2... but at least they both still have Value

I have the layout of the play page essentially finalized.

@this :+1: got 1 lines Types un-registered and Types libarary <Path>\rubberduck.tlb unregistered successfully
TYVM for again taking the time to assist my duckheaded comprehension.

need to think out loud for a bit.
so I got the keys in a neutral format. That's good.
Now I need to transform them for 32-bit and 64-bit install.
In the Inno Setup, we can either say HKCU, or HKCU32 or HKCU64
does it make sense to generate 3 registry tables for each?
The annoying thing is that examining the keys, only Record and TypeLib lack their virtualized entries. I have CLSID and Interface in both places. Because those came from the DLL, I have a hunch that those are on the account of the Any CPU setting. The TLB file, OTOH is specific to one or other platform. Yet, my entries for the TLB and the Record aren't in virtualized path despite being 32-bit.
interestingly, TLB has a key to indicate the bitness. I wonder what'd happen if it had keys in both....
@ThunderFrame you have both 32-bit and 64-bit VBA hosts?

I just unregistered Rubberduck.dll performed git pull upstream next but still see the Rubberduck.VBE folder. should that now be a Rubberduck folder?

you don't mean RubberduckVBEEditor right?

1:30 AM

ok that's RetailCoder.VBE. ;)
delete it

#Words FML I truly deserved some of those Fs...
In my head I'm using the correct words.

@this Yep. I have 32-bit Office running on 64-bit OS, and a VM running 64-bit Office on 64-bit OS.... Soon to have a VM with 32-bit Office running on 32-bit Windows...
digs around for a 16-bit copy of Office
3

Ok so if you can do me a favor.....
look under [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes\TypeLib\{E07C841C-14B4-4890-83E9-8C80B06DD‌59D}\2.1\0]
do you have both win32 and win64 listed there?
wait....

on the 64-bit Office VM?

1:38 AM
my question was specifically - do you have BOTH 32-bit and 64-bit RD installed on same VM?

oh, I have 32-bit Office and 64-bit CorelDRAW on the same PC

and have you installed 32-bit & 64-bit RD there?

but the RD installer never registered for 64-bit

that is, RD works in both places for the 32-bit Office and the 64-bit CorelDRAW
right because it's tied to the Office when it's checking....

Hrm.... Can't get RD to register with regasm.exe

1:42 AM
but did you manually tweak to make it work for CorelDRAW, @ThunderFrame ?
@IvenBach what do you get?

cd c:\users\ivenbach\source\repos then <PathToRegasm>\regasm.exe "<PathToRD>\rubberduck.dll"

@Mat'sMug We know that Worksheets.Item will either succeed or fail, depending upon whether the argument is valid, but that's not the reason that Item returns a Variant... It's because the argument can be an array, and if it is, then the return value is an array of Worksheets, otherwise it's just a Worksheet.
@this I didn't - it was more than a regasm, IIUC, because I would have needed to copy over the 64-bit file(s) too?

@IvenBach no good
must do /tlb /codebase, too

and I'm in the middle of reinstalling the OS, Office, VS, etc.... and was going to build from VS, and just get the deployment for free...

@this ^

1:48 AM
well, i just ran regasm
and indeed it generates win64 to the same place
so i guess the TypeLib should NOT be going to the virtualized place....
but I can't be sure it works
registering the 64-bit type library does not appear to affect the 32-bit RD, at least.
so it looks to me that I only need to generate platform-specific keys for the subkeys to Interface and CLSID and platform-agnostic keys for the Record and TypeLib

Checked and re-typed 3 times now.

@IvenBach that'd be because it's the wrong path
your princess is in the Rubberduck.Main project.

FML... "(path to install folder)\rubberduck.dll" now needs to read "(path to install folder)\rubberduck.api.dll"

no.....
you went and married the wrong princess
4

2:06 AM
This is why I shouldn't have access to pretty much anything.

2:20 AM
... I've gone and messed up my install.
I've tried to fix my error but I can't get RD to load in the VBE now.

@IvenBach The Registration Princess looks good from afar, but in reality, is far from good.
3

I'm probably going to need some hand-holding to get it fixed.
I feel naked without RD now.

2:50 AM
What kind of steps do I need to go through to get Excel>Developer>Com Add-ins to properly recognize Rubberduck.dll as an add-in.

3:05 AM
i'm back
sooo, first clean up
regasm <path to the folder>\rubberduck.api.dll /codebase /tlb /u
now, i need to make sure .... the path to the folder is.... what?
I'm interested in only the last few folders, @IvenBach

@this you know how I can cleanup my mess?

^^^

i un-regged the incorrect prinecss

ok
now... the question RE: folder, please

folder for the correct .dll?

3:11 AM
the install path
what did you unregistered from?

c:\users\ivenbach\source\repos\rubberduck\rubberduck.main\bin\debug\rubberduck.d‌ll
C:\Users\IvenBach\source\repos\Rubberduck\Rubberduck.API\bin\Debug\Rubberduck.ap‌i.dll

OK so,... the rubberduck.main is the one you want
therefore -
C:\Windows\Microsoft.Net\Framework\v4......\Regasm.exe C:\....\rubberduck.main\...rubberduck.dll /tlb /codebase

^ beat me to it
registered successfully

now can you load?

Going through Developer>ComAdd-ins didn't work.
There's something that I'm missing.

3:17 AM
hm
no
it's not a Excel add-in
it's an VBA add-in
open the VBE

It's opened.
I don't have anything installed.

go to Addins manager

I'm there.
Don't see anything there.

hm.
download a normal installer and install

Should i go through the process of unreg and uninstall?

3:24 AM
wouldn't hurt
no non onoo non onononono
bad idea
installer wasn't updated

So.

gonna have to do it the hard way

What's that entail? Rolling my face on the keyboard?

i want to make sure-
open regedit
go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\VBA\VBE\6.0\Addins\Rubberduck.Extension
do you have such key?

Up to Addins is good
Extension isn't found.

3:30 AM
ok that's why
yer missing that key
did you delete it manually?
anyway, create that key.

Nope
didn't delete it. That's why something feels off

add 3 values... first 2 shall be REG_SZ, the last 1 shall be REG_DWORD
Description => Rubberduck
FriendlyName => Rubberduck
LoadBehavior => 3

REG_SZ is which one?

the first two, Description and FriendlyName
only LoadBehavior should be the REG_DWORD

Had some people randomly drop over for a moment. Back to full attention.
@this Reg_Sz is string. That's the part I was missing.
I don't often do registry stuff.

3:37 AM
yep

Ok Description and FriendlyName are both REG_SZ with Data = Rubberduck LoadBehavior is Reg_DWord with data = 3
Where an the RD wiki are the instructions for adding the proper registry info?

IDK
not sure if htere's one.
it's supposed to be done by the installer

But with that done now I see RD in the Add-In Manager
With that complete my panic attack has begun to subside.

good. your ducky was there all the along

I'd never have done it adequately without your help.
@Mat'sMug Should there be instructions for manually updating the registry for dev build contributors?
@this Now that I'm knowing more about the registry.
LoadBehavior is the same as ticking the box?

3:46 AM
IMO, yes there should be. I had to search for it as it's not exactly at the top of my head
well, sorta-
there's 2 checkboxes

The `Load on Startup = 3'

yeah
it's a bitmask
1 means mumble mumble, 2 means the nunble nunble and 3 is combo of both.

and a bitmask 3 is the same as 2^0 + 2^1

yes

#Words...

stupid power of zero....
#FunFact 0^0 = 1

You sure about that?

At least Google sez so

Last I recall it's an indeterminate form.

Wiki seems to agree with you, though.

My pedantry is weak as is my desire to really care.

3:50 AM
apparently it depends who you ask. #MoreFunFacts
and one would thunk math should be rigorously specific....

I'm pretty sure even math breaks down at a certain point.

you can write a system for something that doesn't exist but you can't write a system that self-contradicts.
After all, math is expression of logic and logic has to be immovable in its law of non-contradiction, or we have no logic at all.

Isn't that the basis of proof by disproval? You can disprove everything else.

i think that's a something bit different. Proof by contradiction demonstrates that this assertion is false but it's not an induction that every other assertions are false.
Law of non-contradiction is simply an assertion that an A cannot be not A {at same time and space}
and that's how we derive the other principles of logic such as identity A is A, excluded middle if A is not B then B is not A and few more. All those derives from that idea A cannot be not A
math builds on it, so it cannot be illogical. At least I don't think it can be.

Just for reference, any logical system with a finite set of rules capable of describing arithmetics cannot be proven to be consistent from within itself.
On the other hand, first order logic, the one computers are build on, is consistent.

@Mat'sMug is that distribution list maintained automatically or manually?

@Vogel612 manually..

hmm. there might be a way to populate it from data in the public GH API...
stuff for the future, I guess.

10:57 AM
@Vogel612 Do you mean removal of named argument in a different module?

yes

11:37 AM
@Vogel612 That sounds a lot like YouTube saying "we're going to allow you to post your video, but we disagree with it and we're going to point out why" without actually saying it out loud. /late to the party

hum ... it's more like
"We're going to allow you to post your video, but because we get a lot of flak for recommending shitty conspiracy and indoctrination videos like yours because they produce engagement we're going to add a symbolic disclaimer to cover our backsides"

@M.Doerner I assume we're talking about Gödel's incompleteness theorem. However, I always understood even the first order logic are themselves accepted a priori because there is no way to prove the law of non-contradiction (and therefore its derivatives) as true.

@Vogel612 thanks.

ugh... work on docs for 10 minutes and already mnot the slightest interest in writing them ...
FML
it helps that the "READ THIS BEFORE PROCEEDING" docs are a clusterfuck of buzzwords. The whole thing reeks of "bullshit-bingo"
who the heck decided that docs like this were a good idea:
product-name obfuscated to protect the guilty

They went from killing trees to inconveniencing trillions of electrons, it seems.

ohh and they go for the full vendor-lockin bullshit
argh
either "components of [redacted] must be installed on validated hardware by a certified administrator or official [redacted] hardware partner"
or "the components of [redcated] can only be installed by certified hardware partners on validated hardware running a specific operating system."

sounds to me that's their business model.
buy this software and then pay us a ransom for life
Not too unlike Oracle.

[Currently awaiting moderation on this post. Wanna to bet I'll get a reply a decade later?](https://blogs.msdn.microsoft.com/larryosterman/2006/01/11/what-registry-entries-are-needed-to-register-a-com-object/#comment-185665)

Larry, even a decade later, this is still helpful. There is a small detail that’s puzzling to me. When I inspect the output of regasm.exe, it does not always write everything to the same side of the registry. For example, on an assembly with “Any CPU”, registy entries will be written for both 32-bit and 64-bit branch of the tree but only for CLSID and Interface. For Ty

Me no like it.

3:14 PM
@Vogel612 sorry my brain broke. passwords in xml?

@this YES!

lol
sounds like a good one for the daily WTF

FWIW that is for headless automation and installing stuff in batch-mode

FWIW, XML is perfectly OK if the passwords are hashed...

but still... WTF

No worse than SQL Server or any other DB storage.
I mean, it arguably is, but as far as data security goes...
The basic premise is, your DB is essentially open to the public. They shouldn't be able to get anything important, though.

> "Prerequisites:
- You are logged in as root user
- ...
- ...
well... that is a rough start
and it does not get better...

@this Not too unlike IBM!

yea, you're getting closer to the actual culprit...

IBM? Who's IBM?
;)

3:26 PM
@Hosch250 - if you get a job at MS, please, please, I implore you, find a what to make them stop changing application interfaces for no apparent reason and without a way of setting them back to the way they were.
/HATES all the extra line spacing that comes as a default in Outlook

@FreeMan oh but there are reasons... they're NDA ;-)

There are valid reasons for forcing the extra line spacing in between Inbox folders in Outlook on a desktop machine without any touch input? I'd be willing to pay to sign the NDA to find out what they are.

@FreeMan No.
@FreeMan Yes.
Simply so they don't have to maintain what would essentially be 2 UI's.

that's got to be a good story.

And that could introduce all kinds of bugs.

3:28 PM
@FreeMan you got Office 365?

"Oh, yeah, we tested it with configuration A. My machine doesn't have a touchscreen, so I couldn't test it with B"

How hard would it be to add an 'increase vertical spacing for touch interface' option (or the inverse) and add or subtract the extra space?
No, we're on 2016. though it's probably hard to tell that apart from 365

@FreeMan - Don't be crestfallen when you find out that the explanation is boring.

@FreeMan Easy enough, but it would make every UI horribly ugly.

@FreeMan with O365 you can join insider, and provide that kind of feedback directly to the Office dev team

3:30 PM
@Mat'sMug FWIW, you can anyway.

i presume Outlook has a UV

@Hosch250 Doubt it, the interface in 2010 was far from ugly, and it had a very normal amount of vertical spacing. Granted, fat fingers on a phone wouldn't have been very effective at working it, but not everybody is using the app on a phone.
it's been sitting there for 2 years. 400+ votes and, apparently, no response.

@FreeMan For a mouse...

@Hosch250 eh?

If they left the UI as 2010 but just added space, it would be hideous on touch.
As it is, it's nice on both--especially if you don't have the best control over your hand movements.

3:33 PM
If the changed it as they did for 2016 but gave an option to reduce the spacing (for example when the system doesn't detect touch input), it would be much more usable.

two words: shared codebase
two more: cross platform

OPTIONS, man, OPTIONS!!!

@FreeMan That's what I just said--then they'd need to maintain essentially two UI's for it.

@FreeMan be careful - more options => more code => more bugs => more pain => more angry customers => world implosion

Anyway, I certainly won't have access to the Office team, and I won't get them to change it if I did, because I like 2016.

3:34 PM
Generally, if a application has 100000 options, something went horribly horribly wrong

I don't get how that would be 2 full UIs - have an 'interlineSpacing' setting that's set to "big" or "little" based on a user preference.

@FreeMan It's a lot more than spacing.

it's more valuable, IMO, for an application to have good default.

The whole button has to resize.
If the fat finger hits the space, the button still won't click...
@this Exactly. We hit that same point many, many times in our accessibility training.
"Why not two themes? Default + high-contrast that the user opts into?"

@this but there is no good default when you're trying to develop one codebase for a 24" 1920x1200 monitor w/o touch and a 5.5" phone with 1080x720 or even full HD resolution.
oh well, just 464 people's opinion...

3:37 PM
Oh, a lot of people that benefit from a higher-contrast theme (not full-high-contrast) don't think they need it, so they don't switch and struggle to enjoy the site.

gotta run. pound out some frustration & annoyance on the ol' pavement.

@FreeMan FWIW, they do have a minimal app for the 5.5" phone.

@FreeMan UserVoice is but one channel; insider feedback is another... mostly used by MVP's. UV priorities don't necessarily reflect the real-world priorities... Python for Excel (4K votes+) is a good example :)

But if you are on a 10" tablet with touchscreen and no keyboard is what the bigger icons are designed for.

@Mat'sMug Why wouldn't Python reflect real world priorities?

3:41 PM
there's a TON of more pressing issues than enabling Python scripting in Excel
but if all you look at is UV, you'd think that's the top priority

Hmm. Interesting. TBH, I'd have though it is very pressing given the hype over the "data science"
but what do li'l me know.

EXCEL wasn't intended to handle what DataScience does in the first place
as such the idea that lacking python integration for excel is hampering it's adoption in DataScience is a bit far-fetched

@Hosch250 :+1: for the search bar on Code Explorer.
Making what I need to do a cake-walk.

:)

3:56 PM
Why would one walk on cake? Normally one eats it, or perhaps have it instead, but to walk.... That's just a terrible waste.
;)

@this They aren't walking on the cake, they are walking around the cake.

@this This is why I try and avoid any extra options. Too much extra work to keep it all working.

4:17 PM
Actually, I think python support for Office would make sense. Not because of data science, but because it is primarily reference counted, in contrast to c# and vb.Net.
