@oAlt the answer is INTEGRATED CIRCUITS (= chips)
it's T (trout first) plus GRATED C(-heddar) inside RICE*, all inside INUIT (people living in the cold north) plus S (south)
i really like how you put together that surface for an answer that has nothing to do with food

Q: All-round traveller chickens out

JafeThis is part 3 of the puzzle series that started at Living the traveller's dream. Each part is solvable on its own. Dear Puzzling, As I'm sure you know, I am pretty much an all-round traveller. I'm just as interested in climbing mountains as I am in visiting cathedrals or lying on a beach some...

@Jafe at one point i thought the country was australia due to "alice springs"... and then my certainty was completely thrown out of the window when i struggled to find saint georges in australia

I got 8a quite early but 11a was my last one in.

3:16 AM
@GarethMcCaughan You mean 11d

I do, indeed, mean 11d.

we may need to help oAlt, appears to have a mouth stuck open

@oAlt i thought about adding a note that there may be other geographical answers but decided it wasn't necessary as long as there's only one possible group of 5 for the final answer

mm
@bobble not anymore

good good

3:26 AM
I'm gonna try the clues too
8a and 1d were easy, 18d is quite challenging

4:24 AM
I know the answer to this, but I implore you to not answer until they give a source!!
(just because I'm annoyed at how off-topic puzzles get answered. end rant)

Q: How is "OPPOSE" the answer to "Don't act like a pro (6)"?

Michael DoveClue: "Don't act like a pro (6)" Answer: OPPOSE I can see that "act" gives POSE", but how do you get to "OPPOSE"?

5:15 AM
added comment with source
@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica btw, what was the intended answer to this one?

Borobudur &lit
Yeah, Indonesian knowledge is needed

hehe i wasn't getting it in that case

Just search Borobudur and you will understand

5:37 AM
What's interesting is that if Buddhism is replace with Hinduism, it still works as an &lit clue which is PRAMBANAN

how does the wordplay work

Indonesian Temple and "Dedicated to Buddhists" as &lit

@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica Yeah, I saw "Borobudur" and one other option also having 9 letters

@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica oh, it's this one; the two of them were in the same source

5:49 AM
my best guess was double-definition of balinese which has many many problems :P
1) the wrong amount of letters, 2) not buddhist but hindu, 3) probably not referred to as just "balinese" anyway and 4) even if it was, it would really only be a single definition as both definitions mean "something from bali"
but hey other than that it would have been fine

@oAlt No, Prambanan is a Hindu temple
The clue says Buddhist

6:09 AM
Ah I see

11:44 AM
@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica I think I'm missing something; how is that a cryptic clue? I mean, it is literally an Indonesian temple dedicated to Buddhists. It's like "Fruit that's long and yellow" cluing BANANA.

@Anonymus25-ReinstateMonica I think you're confused as to what &lit means - an &lit clue is one where the entire clue acts as both the definition and the wordplay - an example: "First person to be USA's #2! (5)" (source) def: john ADAMS, America's first vice president; wordplay: ADAM (First person) + _S_ (USA's #2)
So Jafe's CCCC from a while back, "Get rid of announcer's small hesitation (4,3) = WEED OUT" isn't an &lit: the definition is "get rid of", and the wordplay is a homophone (clued by "announcer's") of "small hesitation" = WEE DOUBT ~ WEED OUT; the definition is one half and the wordplay is the other half, so it isn't an &lit

@Jafe :000
in my opinion that is an intriguing stipulation to hold fast to, though it is difficult to follow for a long duration of chatting

oops, accidentally VTC'ed this as Speculative Answers before seeing it was open-ended
If anyone wants to use my standard close reason, it is this:
