Q: Where is the pilot flying to? (Fifth Destination)

Anthony Ingram-WestoverThis is the fourth in a series of puzzles where the answer will always be an international airport. Previous puzzles can be found first, second, third, and fourth. The puzzles are all independent, but follow the same general format and story. No rest for the weary, Barry had just returned from h...

Q: Simple letter subs with a twist!

Sorry, was doing stuff. Still revising my C4

had to edit, I thought it was Simple Message Service, not Short Message Service

Struggling to find all the clues after knowing the answer feels weird, lol :D Btw that "speak out loud" clue was really nice!

"No key a..." is incredibly funny and clever, I love it.

5:11 PM
Two of the missing clues both tell you it's a text message. One is straight forward, the other is a bit more hidden. The third is the one that's a bit of a stretch, so I'll give that one away. Stereotypically, young women text a lot, so saying a young woman might have an easier time figuring it out was a nod to that

@Sciborg hey mick!

The puzzle basically revolved entirely around the NOKIA pun, once I thought about that

I am occasionally a young woman, and do not text unless I absolutely have to.

Hi Matt :)

i have no clue what is happening in here

5:12 PM
we're talking about puzzles?

yes i can see that
what puzzle specifically?

the 5th pilot puzzle

Anthony made a really funny Fifth Destination puzzle

hm

How do I phrase "'a young woman might be quicker to solve this' hints towards texting, because women are said to be able to text faster" without getting downvoted? :D
I can't see any other interpretation for why that is included

5:16 PM
that is a good question
unfortunately i lack an answer

yeah, that was the intent, and while not meant as insulting, it is stereotypical and could be seen as improper

Ugh, I was going to do AEONIAN---> AEOLIAN trying to use something like "Minor prelude to Liszt something key change" but couldn't really pull it off.
Imma do something else, but any suggestions for that sequence above?

try, idk, "turn 2 backwards" ... since rot(-2)(N) = L
nah thats boring

No I like Prelude of Liszt bc it fits with "minor", but I can't clue the transition to like "heart of Aeonian". I was thinking key, as in key sig, but it felt too awkward or didn't clue right

I'm curious as to why this puzzle has two downvotes. I don't really ever vote on riddles (and I haven't here), but I was wondering why two other people might think this is bad-quality. I have no real ability to tell the quality of a riddle.

5:23 PM
It could be caused by generalized long-term dislike of riddles

Avi
It's not a good riddle
Though, I haven't voted on it
It doesn't even read well

It is a little awkwardly worded, and I could see how it could be a lot of different answers potentially, but I don't think it's worth the downvotes

Avi
I think this is the best reason that it's not a good riddle
Wow, the answer is so obvious that one might think it's something else. — risky mysteries 2 hours ago
Too straightforward

@Ankoganit finally found an example

loops like that's different - the words break in different places, and it double-wraps.

5:33 PM
it's the same thing if you took the clues ordered as they are in the grid

ah

well, the snake charmer layout is slightly more free - you can have words embedded in other words
for instance, the one here has RODIN / CASH AND CARRY as its first two answers, and HANDCAR in its other loop around

@Sciborg lol Voldy is great but I'm a he/him

1 hour later…
6:47 PM
@Deusovi Can you look over my C4 again? I don't know if one part is legal

sure!

Avi
Will be out for a bit
until then, new "What is a ... word" I posted

Ugh, good grief something got messed up with the One Time Secret. Gotta retype it

uh i'm not sure how that works

Yeah... I wasn't sure if it's legal or not, but makes for a killer surface :(

6:55 PM
@Deusovi There used to be some comments on my last post. I asked a user something, but before I saw the reply they disappeared. Can you tell what if the user replied.

@AnnZen there was no response; the comments were deleted because they were off-topic for the question

Okay, great.

that doesn't make sense to me at all and i would absolutely not use it

6:57 PM
wikipedia's list of crossword abbreviations has a lot of junk - i'd say you should only use an abbreviation if you're fairly sure it's an actual thing

Okay
I'll try to make a less sus clue

(by the way, Deus, do you think "fight" = DISORDER was legal in my CCCC?)

that seems fine to me

i'd say there's a minor grammar issue but i don't think it's a huge deal

Ah, that's much, much better. Stealing that
CCCC: Mismanaged elitist clan neglected the conclusion to paramount suggestions. (10)

there's a lot of long words there

@Deusovi What do you think of the surface after all those revisions? :P

@bobble indeed

Avi
7:25 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr I'm not Deusovi but yikes
Sounds like the Uchiha massacre
"mismanaged elitist clan" with a bloody "conclusion" due to not listening to "paramount suggestions"

Ooooooh I really like the wordless connect wall

7:38 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Solution to your CCCC is (ELITIST CLAN - (-paramoun)T)* = SCINTILLAE, meaning "suggestions" as in "very small quantities".

@GarethMcCaughan Wow

@GarethMcCaughan WOW
solved in 17 minutes

I thought "suggestions" would throw people off for a while
Of course, I could never out-word Gareth

Avi
@matt I think I've seen one solved in 6 seconds?

@Avi There's one that Deusovi solved in literally I think 3 seconds?

Avi
7:40 PM

@GarethMcCaughan I literally spent like an hour and a half making that clue

Avi
A book pun clue would be amazing
"ABC", a book by XYZ

7:49 PM
@GarethMcCaughan How'd you solve it so quickly?

@Avi how would that even be possible

@Avi What is the list of book clues?

Avi
@matt It definitely seems viable, especially if the part in quotes is a punny definition or something

yeah

Avi
@PrinceNorthLæraðr anything you can come up with lol

7:59 PM
@Avi No I mean can I see the list

"Good Riddance!" a book by Mai X.
Okay, you got to admit, that's funny

Avi
Ya but the Anne X. is just too good to get rid of

How does that make sense?

Avi
it doesn't
but it's just so good

8:09 PM
Idk
@bobble Thoughts?

On what?

Mai X. or Anne X.?

Also, is that Mith or someone else with their account?

I think that's Mith

that is mith

8:10 PM
@Avi If you wanna use Anne X, you should instead use "War and Peace" by Anne X.

Avi
"Appropriate Behavior", by Anne X.

"Finding Sarah Connor", a book by Will B. Back

@Avi But to annex means like oust a country

Avi
@PrinceNorthLæraðr no it means to add a piece of territory

hence, "Appropriate" behavior
double the puns :)

@Avi "How to be Successful in Realestate", a book by Anne X.

“A Night in the Museum”, a book by Q. Rate
“Shower” a book by A. Pearl

"England after Henry I", a book by King, Stephen

I still think “Crime and Punishment” by P. Null should be up there

when you've posted 8 puzzles of a series of 10 and realize you want to remake the final part from scratch... sigh

@PrinceNorthLæraðr Thought process was something like: "Mismanaged" looks like an anagrind. ELITIST CLAN is one letter too many, but "neglected" could be a removal indicator. Maybe "the conclusion" means E (last letter of "the")? That's possible but LITISTCLAN doesn't look very promising and "paramount suggestions" seems an unlikely def (and "to" an unsatisfactory connector). Ah, but "the conclusion to paramount" would be T, leaving ELITISCLAN which seems plausible.

Ah, I see
Shucks

8:29 PM
Then I tried making it end with -TIES (didn't seem good) and -ICLES (just for fun, didn't seem good) and then I noticed SCINTILLAE.

hmm, what's wrong with "[wordplay] to [def]"?

> (and "to" an unsatisfactory connector)

9:14 PM
Well, "to" doesn't mean "producing" or "is defined by" or "equals" or "is" or any such thing. It's no better than "in" or "of" or "by" or "with" would be, so far as I can see.
Dubious connectors are fairly common and fairly harmless, but it would still grate a bit.

9:43 PM
hey, Alconja!

Avi
"Night at the Museum", a movie by Q. Rate
nobody said we couldn't have some variety mixed in :P

"curate"?

Avi
yes, it's an occupation
as well as a verb

1 hour ago, by Prince North Læraðr
I still think “Crime and Punishment” by P. Null should be up there

9:51 PM
is it not "curator"?

It can also be curate, I think

Avi
@PrinceNorthLæraðr I disagree - who names their child "null"
UH OH
A curate ( KEWR-it) is a person who is invested with the care or cure (cura) of souls of a parish. In this sense, "curate" correctly means a parish priest; but in English-speaking countries the term curate is commonly used to describe clergy who are assistants to the parish priest. The duties or office of a curate are called a curacy. == Etymology and other terms == The term is derived from the Latin curatus (compare Curator). In other languages, derivations from curatus may be used differently. In French, the curé is the chief priest (assisted by a vicaire) of a parish, as is the Italian curato...

@Avi Fine, "Crime and Punishment" by P. Knull

@Avi "The Good Ol' Days", a book by Sen Tim N. Tal

Avi
pairs well with
"Back in my Day", a book by L. Derr

How about "Get Off my Lawn"?

Avi
LOL
"Get Off My Lawn!", a book by L. Derr (new & improved)
"Planning for Retirement", a book by S. Tate <--- could probably be replaced
anyways, so here's my puzzle idea
gather a bunch of book puns
and de-abbreviate the names
for example, "Get Off My Lawn!", a book by Len Derr
and then the puzzle is to figure out the proper abbreviation for each pun

Probably too obvious for most

Avi
10:53 PM
e.g., "History of Laboratory Glassware", a book by Earl N. Mayer does not abbreviate Earl
but "The Good Ol' Days", a book by Sen Tim N. Tal does abbreviate Senator
@bobble so the difficulty in setting becomes coming up with non-obvious puns
and, you wouldn't have to restrict it to 1 letter being abbreviated
you could have things like "Dangerous Diseases", a book by Horatio Ignatius Victorio
straight reduced to H.I.V.

"Software Best Practices" by Dev E. Loper

"Juked", a novel by Finn S.

Bubbler, do you have any more grid-deductions in the making?

"Downpayments", a book by S. Tate

11:02 PM
looking forward to it!

@bobble Quick help for physics:
"Inside a washing machine, the radius of the cylinder where the clothes sit is 0.50 m. In one of its settings the machine spins the cylinder at 2.0 revolutions per second. What is the acceleration of an item of clothing?"
It's 4pi^2*0.5/4 right?

<there will be a lag time while I think>
pi^2 / 2 is what I got, which I think is the same as you if you simplify

huh?
why divided by 2?
Oh wait yeah

11:22 PM
velocity is pi / 2
oh you got it?
good

0.5*pi^2 is pi^2/2
Right. The answer isn't a choice on the list though

why not?

I don't know. Pi^2/2 gives me about 4.93
But the choices are as follows: (A) 0.080 m/s 2 (B) 1.6 m/s 2 (C) 8.0 m/s 2 (D) 79 m/s 2

oh wait 2 per second, not two in a second

(4pi)^2 * 0.5, no?

11:25 PM
or am I confusing myself?

@Bubbler Huh?

one revolution is 2pi radians, so the angular velocity is 4pi per second

Well i used the equation 4pi^2/T^2
T=period, so 2 revolution per second is 2^2 no?

2 revolutions per second means 0.5 seconds to rotate once
so T = 0.5

11:28 PM
yeah that was what i realized above
though I have trouble wording things under time pressure

Mine is from quick Wikipedia search, using a = w^2*r

So isn't it... 8pi^2
Yup

I'm really, really, really sorry North

So it's D, I think

No, it's fine lol
@Bubbler Yup. Got that
78.96
Or 79 m/s^2

11:30 PM
One useful approximation of pi is pi^2 = 10
