Meanwhile, yet another puzzle type using trominoes coming soon:

ooh interesting

coool
I think Deus just likes new grid-deductions :)

can't argue with you there

My grandpa mailed 3 sudokus to my family with a note "I am sending you some sudoku to do".

the perfect grandfather

12:32 AM
time to introduce someone to better genres
(seriously though that seems really thoughtful)

It is :) I will try to set aside some time to solve them with paper and pencil.

@Bubbler I'm assuming each number tells how many black squares are orthogonally adjacent to an L-tromino?

Not necessarily L, but for every tromino

Ah right

Q: Ernie and the literary criticism

PenguinoWhen I dropped in on Ernie over the weekend he commented that he hadn’t seen me for a while. I had to confess that my evenings had been very busy recently - first at the local Community College doing a course on creative writing, and then at home writing my first novel. “It is a spy story – dram...

Fire update: Air quality is much better. Still 5% containment, but the fire hasn't grown that much bigger since this morning

Q: Santoitchi: Introduction

BubblerSantoitchi is yet another genre involving trominoes. It appears to be invented by Inaba Naoki, and then picked up by Bram de Laat, who uses the name Sandwich (blame Google Translate for the possible mistranslation, as the genre apparently has nothing to do with sandwiches). The name seems to mean...

hoping it gets even better @PrinceNorthLæraðr

Thank you, @oAlt

Same as oAlt here. Sending lots of hope for better air & containment.

Thank you, thank you

2:18 AM
no worries north. And agh I never knew the santoitchi would be solved that quick-- but I'm kinda glad cuz I can finally stop using puzzles to avoid this particular academic requirement :P

Avi
Ballot voltage shockingly decreased by electric retardation (4)

This looks hard. I'm too lazy at the moment to attempt

Avi
VOLTAGE* - LAG = VOTE

nice.

Avi
Thanks! Unfortunately couldn't find a way to turn "vote" into something electric-related

2:22 AM
One more week and America burns in hell

Avi
Why?

one thing is vote = volt homolog
are you allowed to do double-wordplay?

Avi
double-wordplay? where?
not in regular cryptics, at least
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Hell (a.k.a. Texas) is freezing over right now :(

^

Avi
so cold

2:25 AM
@Avi You're in Texas?

I meant the regular cryptics message

I thought you were in nevada?

I think that's matt

Avi
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Neva

@bobble Oh, must've confused Matt and Avi's locations

Thanks! Unfortunately couldn't find a way to turn "vote" into something electric-related
^ but I'm sure it's possible
after all, electronic voting is a thing

Crazy voltage loses retired woman's important electronic message, perhaps (4)
There's probably a better anagram indicator to use, and I'm unsure of the legality of the possessive 's as a connector

Avi
's is legal
maybe "destroys" instead of "loses"

Is that still legal for cluing a deletion?
Looking through an A-Z list of anagram indicators, "abnormal" jumps out as a better one to use

2:52 AM
hey there matt!

Avi
@bobble unsure

@msh210 Yup! Well done.

Q: What is a number sequence rule?

NickLet's say that we have a sequence of odd numbers $1, 3, 5, 7 ...$. From this sequence we build a spiral in the spirit of the Ulam spiral. Can you write down a rule for numbers change in the diagonal $3, 15, 23, 43, 59, 87, 111, 147, ...$? Source. Math Olympiad 2020

Avi
3:30 AM
@msh210 full explanation?
KI((-m)AND(-y)<)P?

I think I got the DNA part, but I don't get the definition and the KIP part.

"shanghai" is a verb meaning to kidnap someone (specifically so they can be forced to work on a ship)

Ooh.

also not sure about "kip"

I think it would have to be "brothel" = KIP, but I'm not sure how

Avi
3:36 AM
eighteenth century Irish slang term for a brothel

That was obscure :/
@Sphinx Btw, this looks like a straightforward math problem, though it does come from an olympiad

I'm in the early stages of puzzle-creation, which consists of solving puzzles and vaguely considering possible initial deductions.

3:51 AM
@bobble hello :)

hello back to you

tbh i feel that a cryptic is at its hardest if it references archaic or near-outdated terms, cuz they're still technically valid but not something a solver in a different (i.e. modern) age would recognize

@bobble loop

It also feels plain unfair, since I just have no chance :( But then maybe I need to expand my vocabulary

ye

3:54 AM
that would be a good idea
how is everyone? :)

very non-bad

that's good :)
or is it just non-bad?

it is non-bad

you are confusing my brain lol

Prim3numbahGo out, and you'll get me. This is true in every part of the world. Not all the time, it really depends on where you live. You don't have to go out to get me though, but why not get me for free? I'm part of a small family but just focus on me. I'm vital for you. Who am I?

@bobble nope, mick hasnt posted it yet

he is, see the avatars
He's after jafe for me

time for another episode of _ Is Bad
on this episode ... [redacted for sanity] Is Bad

3:21 PM
@matt it is

... how exactly did you... ?

hm?
@bobble @PrinceNorthLæraðr is a contract killer?

@msh210 ... know what i was saying?

@matt you said [redacted for sanity] is bad. I agree, terrible band. I hate their stuff.

not at all what i was talking about
nice try though :)

3:26 PM
the band [redacted for sanity]? I dunno, you're the one who mentioned them

uh, no
any other guesses? :p

I agree, the band [redacted for sanity] sucks

THIS IS NOT ABOUT A BAND ok?

@LukasRotter any song in particular that you think is terrible?

(sorry for screaming)

3:35 PM
@bobble no, every single one of them is 0/10

Q: Word Chain based on Codename

DrDThis is a different format of the famous CODENAMES game. In this game a ONE WORD clue is given which can connect that clue to multiple words. 3:42 PM
thank you for telling me that

sorry, deadpan humor doesn't really work over chat
(or, sometimes, IRL)

it would be a very odd coincidence if there happened to be a band called "[redacted for sanity]" that somehow had a song called "(sorry for screaming)"

but you walked right into that one by saying "(sorry for screaming)" right after "any song in particular that you think is terrible?"

the downside of not knowing when people are typing

3:55 PM
.....
well that was weird

@msh210 Wait what

a humorous misinterpretation of "he's after jafe for me"

I'm so confused
Oh I see
Good news! Fire is 25% contained hasn't really grown that much bigger :)

Yay!

@PrinceNorthLæraðr an improvement to be sure. good to read

4:04 PM
Still smells a bit smoky outside though. I'm now just concerned about another fire up a bit further north from where we're at. Much too far to cause any damage to where I'm at, but that fire has been 0% contained and I think at least 10 houses have been damaged.
Oh, okay. That fire ^ I just mentioned is actually now 16% contained

good to hear that there's progress at least

Yup
@matt On Wednesday I'm usually online by 9:00 am
@Deusovi Oh, I see. I just read the chat a bit up, and they were talking about me :P
@msh210 You found out my deepest, darkest secret! You must now be removed

Did you ever go see the school counselor, by the way?

I'm gonna talk to my parents about it first. My mental health has been much better though

glad to hear that you're doing better! take care of yourself

4:10 PM
good to hear

Strangely enough, because of the fires, I haven't had school for the last two days. That gave me the break that I needed to recharge

@PrinceNorthLæraðr glad to read

Day 1 of fire, I was too stressed to do homework, and yesterday I was away somewhere where there wasn't any WiFi, so I couldn't do my homework :P

(ashy) silver lining?

Hehe
Thank you for all of your concerns

4:13 PM
You are a valued member of the Lair :)

Aw, thank you~
I need to do a virtual Winter showcase for choir, and I'm trying to find a broadway song. Any suggestions?

my friends are the theatre kids. I may have too many (likely non-useful) suggestions.

Lay it down!

@PrinceNorthLæraðr winter-themed?

Not necessarily

4:17 PM
I sent a text to one friend, but I can't think too much right now since we're doing final project presentations in class.

@bobble So far I've considered Stars from Les Miserable, If I Can't Love Her from Beauty and the Beast, and Confrontation from Jekyll and Hyde
@bobble Finals already? Dang
Oh, your friend would probably benefit from knowing that I'm a baritone-bass XD
Don't need them recommending to me a soprano piece

"finals" because I have a single-quarter class, so really "end of quarter project"

by what time do you need a song?

Oh, not for a while
I'm just brainstorming right now
Maybe in a couple days to a week so that my choir teacher knows what accompaniment parts I might need

4:20 PM
Current presentation starts, "There is a history of racism in our country". No duh.

@bobble probably true no matter where you live

@bobble *claps*

@msh210 probably. history around race is not great anywhere

@bobble It's a global epidemic!

hiiiiii friiieeeenndndssdsssss

ummmmm....
nah i had some elixir today

@bobble Speak for yourself, Ms. Bobbling Crown

@bobble cannot confirm i am definitely weird

Excuse me, I am just as normal as anyone else... (who is not normal)

@Voldemort'sWrath You are about as normal as everyone else in this room
Which isn't saying much

4:28 PM
Don't worry, you're just as sane as I am!

One group's presentation went overtime, so they just sped the video up 1.5x. IT'S SO FAST. agggh

that's an absolutely hilarious solution

correction: 2x

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," Alice remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said the Cat: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn’t have come here.”

4:28 PM
@Deusovi Just do that for every presentation

“But I don’t want to go among mad people," <bobble> remarked.
"Oh, you can’t help that," said <North>: "we’re all mad here. I’m mad. You’re mad."
"How do you know I’m mad?" said <bobble>.

Oh sounds fun

aggh next group is 1.5x :(

“Mad Hatter: “Why is a raven like a writing-desk?”

thank you, your bobbliness

4:33 PM
@bobble I hope you haven't sped up anything

Our group was not sped up, but the end of the video refused to load

Hmmm... "technical difficulties..." suuuuurrrrree

that sounds like a very convenient way to not have to finish your presentation

Uh huhh

Oh, we still had to finish it - the designated speaker just gave that bit of the presentation in class instead

4:36 PM
too convenient if you ask me
mmmhmmmm lemme guess the designated speaker was: <not bobble>

nope!

as i suspected
