Like there's gotta be a passion of yours that you can spin into your thing.

I used to think physics was cool, until I started taking AP Physics

And you didn't enjoy it?

Avi
Probably struggling, because, math.

I'm taking it right now
^

Avi
Math is math :(

7:01 PM
It does have a lot of math, yeah. I remember struggling the most on that
I'm just trying to help you find your thing, that's all. Everybody has a thing

(Secretly they want to be a lumberjack and betray their own kind)

Gasp

@LukasRotter How did you know?! My secret!

I came to college determined to be a physics major, completely flunked out of Modern Physics and was depressed for like a year, and then said "screw it" and changed majors to computer science because I liked writing code and modding video games and figured it would be a fun major, and now here we are. Everybody kinda finds their path, you will too and you've still got plenty of time :)

did physics-you have cool hats, or is that a computer science thing?

7:05 PM
I had cool hats for both

bobble's back!

I still want to go into music. I'm just really burnt out right now and music's been kind of just at a stand-still, especially because I'm not playing in class
I can only play my solo repetoire so many times

Why not try something new? :)

Because I have been doing new stuff (mock trials, math) but I'm just so tired :D
I literally need a week to not do anything without any stress, and I'll be fine. But school doesn't let me do that

math is new?

7:08 PM
Dabbled in some other math stuff on Khan academy to get ahead in pre-calc. Didn't really work
I have a B in history, which is my best subject, because I've lost the will to just read the damn textbook

I guess I'm not sure what to offer, might be worth getting some mental health help at that point if you are too tired to function. :(

Yeah. I've been thinking about it

If you're too exhausted to do anything, you're definitely not alone, COVID times have everybody I know completely burnt out.

I had a pretty scary mental breakdown over the weekend and am considering talking to the school counselor about it

Speaking from a place where I feel I didn't get the therapy I needed early enough, you should absolutely get therapy if you think you need it.
It's so, so important and it helps.

7:10 PM
I'm not the person to talk to about therapy - I hated it since my parents forced me into it. But I accept it helps other people.

That's fair. It helped me a lot but it's definitely not perfect.
But if you're crashing that badly, it's the best thing to try to shake your mind out of the rut.
If you're not okay mentally that's the best advice I can give is to talk to somebody and get some aid.
I know I'm an Internet stranger who doesn't know your life but, there's no shame in getting some help.

^

I don't know if this will help, North, but even at my age, I sometimes still feel like that kid who wonders when all the adults are going to come fix everything. Nobody has it all figured out...everybody makes most everything up as they go along. Sciborg is right...even if you don't need "help", just talking to somebody who will listen and help organize your thoughts can be very valuable.

That's exactly how it feels. Just talking to somebody and feeling loved was all I really needed when it came down to it, honestly.

And I hope it says something to you that random Internet strangers value you enough to care. Because it really does matter.

7:16 PM
I like you, North. You're a nice online friend.
3

I talk to you more than my "real" friends, too, since school is online

Same here :P
Okay I gotta pay attention in physics bc we're on a new unit

luck!

I'm glad this chatroom has gotten so wholesome :)

7:20 PM
@bobble i second this :)

"Enter the <dramatic music> Sphinx's Lair. No, really, come in, we're wide open!"

exactly!

We're like the r/gatesopencomeonin of Stack Exchange

what is that subreddit?

The idea is that it's the wholesome opposite half of gatekeeping where everybody is welcome.

7:22 PM
aaaaand what is r/gatekeeping?

pretty much what it sounds like

Nobody is welcomed?

Pay attention to your class! :p

It just ended

"/r/gatekeeping is a subreddit for screenshots and stories of gatekeepers in the wild."

7:23 PM
i see

I must be doing one of my Gen Z meme references again

first image result: "Actively Seeking More Ranch"

lol, that sounds like a dating profile. "Actively Seeking Ranch Dressing, Seasonings Optional"

ah yes, ASRDSO

See now I want to make a Game Jam game about ranch dressings looking for dates to the dance

7:27 PM
Would this be from the same brand that brought the world PSE Boss Rush?

PSE Boss Rush is my most GENIUS idea yet

feel free to wooosh me

wooosh

You didn't see the PSE Boss Rush thread? Oh my god you have to see it

@bobble thank you very much

7:29 PM
woosh

wsh

The chat-search isn't working for any recent posts

hmm

Okay I gtg to do some section leader stuff. See ya guys

<proceeds to get some more tea>

7:32 PM
see yah!

Remember what we said North, we love you <3

tea has been acquired
sips

@bobble Both chat search and regular search has been on the brink lately.

we ought to post it on meta

I found it with manual transcript search! PSE boss fight starts here

7:35 PM
Bless you bobble

where do i come in?

You can be the plucky Dark Souls protagonist who has to go up against all the crazy bosses
You're armored with a Book of Linguistic Lore +1

hell yeah
what about, idk, Mith?

And your special ability is "Create Conlang" which takes 60 minutes, but gives you a +5 boost to INT

Make sure to get the Sciborg DLC!

7:37 PM
Mith... hm

My boss fight already happened.

I need a gender neutral alternative to "King/Queen"
"Monarch?"
Yes
Mithical, Monarch of Mysteries

Emperox?

Their special ability is "Sarcasm" which inflicts 6d6 psychic damage

nah, alliteration is better
@Sciborg recharge time?

7:39 PM
@bobble Instantly

(Psst. I know nothing about DnD.)

(neither do I)

Drat
I thought we had more D&D nerds in here

I know a lot about D&D, but I can't find anyone to play with :(

I'd love to try it at some point, but... this isn't the time.

7:40 PM
That's fair. My groups always struggle to stay together.

But I was the weird kid who brought RPG manuals to school for fun reading!

Man we should host a PSE game of D&D sometime :p

I think the RPG stack exchange has ways to organize games?

Pretty sure PPCG plays in their gaming server, FWIW.

Remind me to write you guys a oneshot called "The Deus Deception" sometime

Q: The key with no door

BrianI was given this key, along with an attached seating assignment, at a wedding reception. While many guests assumed it was merely a decorative key, a few clever guests quickly realized the truth. The bride and groom had insured that guests would have a key to an important treasure, one needed fo...

@Sciborg I would be down for this. There would be puzzle minigames, I assume?

filled with Octagonal Kurrottos

@bobble Yes, the plot is that you're all tired of Deus's tyrannical reign over puzzle-solving and you're trying to solve enough puzzle minigames to defeat him

...make sure to include some arbitrary kangaroos...

oh no

7:43 PM
;)

... and North's crazy conlang ...

I guarantee North's conlang will make an appearance

CCCC: Drink in malaria, Arbitrary Kangaroo! (9)

What on earth
What was the answer to that one?

Arbitrary Kangaroo is a legend

7:45 PM
I can only stand in awe

@LukasRotter ...not because of that clue, but still.

yes I know I just found it while searching

I mean, the clue is pretty dang hilarious on its own
What's the whole story?

troll
basically sums it up

big one

7:47 PM
Gareth was trolling?

no

I think I actually lost 500 rep to Gareth or Beastly Gerbil because of a bet if another account is a sockpuppet of Arbitrary kangaroo or not

a troll named arbitrary kangaroo plagued the site for.... years?

sorry for the confusion I just thought the cc was really funn :P

Oh dang, I never knew
So the clue is kind of a "f___ you"?

I guess
@AnarRzayev ?

??

nice

are you ok

@deus around?

7:49 PM
@Deusovi, HELP

I am winner

"Daejeon, South Korea"

yeo

stop spamming

@Deusovi

7:50 PM
@deusovi this is urgent

@Deusovi, HELP SPAMMER NOW

who is deusovi

okay sheesh

@AnarRzayev a mod

hahaha

7:50 PM
no need to ping give times like that

@AnarRzayev just shut up ok

@matt NOOOOO

@GarethMcCaughan, SPAMMER IN ROOM RIGHT NOW

don't feed the trolls please
just stop responding

oh dear god no
dont tell me that's what I think it is

7:52 PM
probably a coincidence
it's been forever

What

the room just showed up at the top of the active list I'd guess, @Lukas
Anyway... we might want to consider appointing some new ROs; things have, uh, changed a bit since the last time that happened. (cc @Gareth & Deus)

@PrinceNorthLæraðr section leader of what?

Sid
@Mithical months. I don't think it went for years.

@gareth? @deus? help

7:55 PM
@matt troll was handled

ah i see

there's a bunch of people here right now

flags will do that, yes

I'm still trying to read the chat logs to understand the Kangaroo thing

Sid
There were at least 3 flags here when I joined, I believe.

7:57 PM
I forgot that you could flag chat messages! Should I flag the remaining messages?

@bobble please don't

@PrinceNorthLæraðr here there's a draft. People with various physical or mental handicaps are exempt. But they can enlist anyway in most cases, though in non-combat roles.

Yeah... there's a draft... *sighs*

@Mithical when do you go?

eight days

7:59 PM
good luck. what group?

tikshuv

like.... galei tzahal?

Were you drafted Mith? I wasn't aware :(

Damn. I'm really sorry. That's rough. Good luck.

8:01 PM
thanks

yeah, looked it up. got it
an easy and safe service, and a safe return

אמן

I don't know any prayers in Hebrew, or I'd say them. God protect you.

@Mithical is that "artist", "amen", or "train"? google translate is not very good

@Sciborg ^^

8:03 PM
It's highly unlikely that I'll see combat; I'm not going into a combat unit. My job description seems to be "communications maintenance".
@matt "amen"

Sid
Ah. Good luck Mith. Hope you stay safe.

:)

:)
@mithical, להישאר בטוח
(I think that's what it says anyway)

"stay safe" -- technically the infinitive but that form is often used as an imperative, so it works here

I mean... it's the same as saying "remain calm" or "be cool"

8:08 PM
My Hebrew is weak enough though that I'm not sure you'd use that root for "stay" for something like this. Maybe Mith knows better.

Oh, oops, you meant the Hebrew, sorry

yeah

stupid google translate

I do like that they've started doing verified translations for common phrases, where native speakers manually check that they're correct

Facebook's version is idiotic. It asks whether you understood the translation, not whether it's correct. What if I understood it but I know it's wrong? Like, if someone wrote (in Hebrew) "Lost Dog: Please call 1234567" and FB translated it into English as "Lost Cat: Please Call 1234567"? Yeah, I can understand that.

8:12 PM
Yikes, that could definitely lead to issues

apparently arabic google translate thinks "mithical" = "solid"

ah yes, our good friend S O L I D

and in burmese, sciborg is a rock

It's because I'm super tough obviously

@msh210 I think so, but I'd conjugate it (תישאר(י, though, I think

Q: Assuming mastermind

MRFalconSome time ago there were some acquaintances that shared a puzzle with me. Essentially the same as the one here Crack the lock code with different graphics. After coming to the conclusion that there are two answers to the puzzle, as stated in the answer I eventually posted, some discussion ensued....

@PuzzlingMeta Quote from post: "I am petty!!! Tell me I am right!!!"

mick has left us

can someone else deal with that post? I have too much homework + I'm burned out from dealing with maze-puzzle person.

from algebra google meet:
> I have a legit question what is 8 ÷ 2(2+2)

8:26 PM
1

it is 16
8/2 = 4
2+2 = 4
4*4 = 16

I was assuming implied parentheses around "2(2 + 2)"

nope

also leaving for homework

aight
hey voldy!

8:29 PM
@matt In French, my name means flying death :P
hiya

depends on if you learned BODMAS or PEMDAS in school :)

whats bodmas?

@LukasRotter they are the same, no?
@Voldemort'sWrath order of operations

I don't think so

yeah, what does it stand for

8:38 PM
ah yes, because it's PEMDAS, not PEDMAS. Dunno, apparently sometimes it's taught this way, which may be the source of the confusion for these kinds of problems. Of course the only right answer is 16, because what mnemonics you learned in school doesn't matter :)

Sid
I learned BODMAS back in middle school. To be honest though, the easier thing in this type of questions is just to plug them into a calculator, hehe.

It seems like a weird and confusing way of remembering it, tbh. It makes it seem like multiplication and division don't have the same importance... In Austria we just learned order of operations in the "old-fashioned" way, I guess :)
I actually remember something from a while back now, I once had to correct a teacher on an almost identical math question on a test. I felt so weird having to explain OOO to a TEACHER
Our educational system in Austria is completely ****** (for multiple reasons) , don't know about how it is in other countries

9:05 PM
@Voldemort'sWrath BODMAS = Brackets, Orders, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction. PEMDAS = Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtraction. I'm glad you seem to live in a country where you didn't learn it this way :P If anything, it should be PE[MD][AS] and BO[DM][AS]

@matt 1. Concatenation as multiplication precedes regular mult. and division in the order of operations. Thus for example "1/3x" is the inverse of 3x, not x/3.
...afaik.

@Voldemort'sWrath Trumpet section leader.

(oh but it follows exponents... 3x^2 is the square of x, times 3)

@msh210 I'm from Korea (have a U.S. citizenship now). They have drafts there too
Also, send my loves to you, @Mithical
@msh210 So what the hell happened in here?
@matt It wasn't that crazy
Like with that random user and a whole lot of deleted posts
@LukasRotter What happened? Room got trolled?

yep, someone spammed

9:16 PM
@msh210 I don't think so. If it's not written as a fraction or clearly as a bracket, it's (1/3)*x. WolframAlpha and google calculator would agree. I can't pull up a source, but I've never heard of that rule.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr ye

Asking again: can someone else please deal with the latest meta rant? I do not have the time nor the energy to answer something that complains about the "assumption" that "two numbers means exactly two numbers" and openly says "I am petty!!! Tell me I am right!!!"
last poke here, sorry :)

9:33 PM
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Ah cool. I play violin
was section leader two years ago, but changed orchestras :(:(

@Voldemort'sWrath Aw, that sucks

No, I like it
this one's a lot better
*section leader = concertmaster
we play more fun things
tchaikovsky's nutcracker coming up

I played oboe music on a flute when I was in band, since we had no oboes and covering that part gave me solos. This is useful information. yes yes.

im glad im not in band just because of how many parts they actually have to learn
or in like a wind section

10:08 PM
@msh210 (granted, this will lead to very ugly cases where "3x/2y" is not "(3x)/(2y)", but "3*x/2*y". Maybe one might simply say the expression is ambiguous and leave it at that, but to my knowledge the ommitted mult sign is just that - ommited. Strictly speaking there's no difference, even though intuition might say otherwise)
To hell with the division sign, just use fractions :)

10:36 PM
I don't know about rules, but if I see "1/3x" I will literally always assume it means 1/(3x).

10:48 PM
@bobble (and interested others) Chain Puzzle format now suggested on the original post. Comments and suggestions welcome. I will set the first chain going once we have a general feel that the 'rules' are sufficiently specified as to be understood by more than just me!

@Stiv Should comments be given under that post or in chat?

@bobble Maybe we should set up a separate chat specifically for it? Otherwise it could end up dominating this thread at times, and doubtless we'll end up with too much below the post itself. I'll set that up now.

make sure to link the chat under the post!

@GarethMcCaughan Yes, agreed. That's most likely what's meant and what is intuitive. My point is that strictly you would have to interpret it as (1/3)x, because of the lack of clarity - Since humans (and computers) appear to disagree on that, maybe there's just no consensus and with this ambiguity both answers are correct?

Ambiguity? Burn it with fire.

10:56 PM
@bobble Done!
@JeremyDover Oh, and on this topic - yup. 33 at the latest count, although I often have to stop and work out how many years have passed since my birth year to be absolutely sure...

Ah, I remember 33. Just kidding...those years were a blur... ;-)

Q: How can you classify quadrilaterals?

GabbiePlease help! This is an IXL activity I need help with because I want to improve my Math skills. Which words describe this shape? Choose all that apply.

11:14 PM
Maybe WolframAlpha also just has a cute little quirk where '/' and '÷' are automatically converted to fractions as long as theres only one term on each side. Google gives different results for "1/3x" and "1÷3x", while WolframAlpha does not....... I'm starting to question my whole existence now.
I'll just stick to the programming way of writing down calculations, this way I don't have to think about these tricks that mathematicians have invented as much :P

11:32 PM
Math notations are ambiguous as hell.

11:48 PM
@Bubbler indeed

How ambiguous is hell?

good question

well, the two ending "l"s could be interpreted as lowercase "l"s, uppercase "I"s, number "1"s, an OR symbol, the mathematical symbol for parallel lines... need I go on?

That's addressing the question 'how ambiguous is "hell"?' but the question I asked was 'how ambiguous is hell?'. Those are completely different.

How ambiguous is 'How ambiguous is hell'?

11:54 PM
Hell is ambiguous enough that it needs a disambiguation page on Wikipedia.

Some of the links on the disambiguation page are to more disambiguation pages!
