2:44 AM
@GarethMcCaughan I have the feeling this may be CO(CHINE)AL, but I'm not confident about "chine" as "fissure" yet

3:18 AM
@oAlt yep, that seems to be it

oh right! I didn't connect "ravine" with "fissure" for some reason...
even saw it in merriam webster as well

Q: n(n+1) as a multiple of 100

Rand al'ThorHere's a puzzle I came up with while walking today: For how many natural numbers $n$ is the number $n(n+1)$ a multiple of $100$? This is true for infinitely many $n$, so "how many" means something like "one in every hundred $n$", an answer in that sort of form. There are some brute-forcey ...

Q: Maximum sum path in a mtrix

Jason ToddGiven a square matrix of size N X N (1 <= N <= 1000) containing positive and negative integers with absolute value not larger than 1000, we need to compute the greatest sum achievable by walking a path, starting at any cell of the matrix and always moving downwards or rightwards. Additionally we ...

CCCC: Maybe Gareth McCaughan's C4 initially is gotten by Rand al'Thor (9)
(which is also a rhyming couplet, completely unintentionally)

what a cute surface

Thanks

@GarethMcCaughan "…never let it fade away…"

@GarethMcCaughan it doesn't seem to have pasted properly though
you're missing )** of past clues.

2:36 PM
I'm gonna be offline for forty-eight hours, so am again posting a hash of my intended solution to the C4, found by using emn178.github.io/online-tools/sha256.html , so people can check theirs (preferably after posting it here) and my absence doesn't hinder progress. It's 3870fc2eed1ae359313e012144f78d4c5e81327c731ec3e820da14998e7e9f2d

3:10 PM
That's the hash of the capitalized answer, I should note.

Hi everybody
Does anyone else feel the puzzles in SE as "too hard"?

There are puzzles are varying difficulties. A lot of them are quite difficult but a lot of them aren't.

I think the puzzles should be categorised
@Mithical Thank you
@Sphinx This one i could do with 3 matchstic movement
but 2?

It's going to be... very difficult to categorize by difficulty. Aside from the fact that it's very difficult for the creator to know how hard something is going to be, there's also the problem of a puzzle that's extremely difficult for one person could be a piece of cake for someone else.

hmmmm
Does the original posters publish the answer if they know?
After a certain period IMO intended answers should be published

depends on the poster... there are questions from years ago that are still unanswered

4:00 PM
yes

4:18 PM
@AlwaysConfused Yeah, there's no feasible way to assign a 'difficulty rating' to each puzzle -- even if we could get past the technical issues, difficulty is completely subjective.
(I do think people should keep adding hints if it's unsolved, or give the answer if they can't give any more hints. But some people don't do that.)

4:30 PM
I have 3 unsolved puzzles, not sure what to do about it

Not sure about the riddle, but for the other two it seems like your intended answer was 'bypassed' - it might be worth just explaining how it was intended to be gotten.

@Deusovi thank you

user435118
@Deusovi You were on the right lines with the chemical number one, want to have another go?

Oh, I knew there was more to it than my answer - I posted it to make a point that the question was underspecified. (I figured they were atomic masses or something along those lines, but didn't bother to check.)
Omega Krypton's followup answer seems perfectly fine to me.

user435118
There's a tiny bit I'm missing:

user435118
4:42 PM
> You're close but not quite, what links these elements together?

Yes, I know. I'm not really interested in playing "guess what I'm thinking" here -- you've given six examples and zero counterexamples, so there are a ton of possible options.

user435118
I'll add some counter examples

Sorry, that came off as harsher than intended, but still - the question is underspecified, and I'm currently not really interested in figuring it out.
