@hexomino well, there's a bird called the ihi, so this must be I+MINI+I+IHI = IMINIIIHI, which anyone in his right mind would refuse.

1:31 PM
@hexomino CHAFF is worthless trash or refuse. There is a small island in Ireland called INCH. And a CHAFFINCH is a bird.

interesting

@Rubio Correct!

not to be confused with the wheatfinch

1:46 PM
I should clarify INCH is used more generally in Scotland and Ireland to refer to a small island - e.g, Alloa Inch, Tullibody Inch

so inch island is basically "small island island"

Like the La Brea Tar Pits.
"The early small island bird gets the inchworm."

@jafe I think so

@MOehm "In inches, inspired inchbirds ingest inchworms."

i assume the first word is not a preposition but an abbreviation for inch

1:53 PM
And the ″straight″ quotation marks are inch symbols, too.

Q: Number puzzle. Can you replace the question mark?

Prim3numbahReplace the question mark. If, [5 22 5 14 19] 12 16 19 21 [[15 20 23]] = 65 then, [[8 5 18 20 5]] 9 13 19 14 21 [14 14 5 9] = ?

@msh210 I didn't want to refuse your answer for fear of giving it greater legitimacy.

At what point do you guys think I should start adding hints?

2:16 PM
Hints or further messages?

@ThomasMarkov I wouldn’te add hints until at least 24 hours have gone by with no forward progress, and I personally tend to wait 48+ in general. If there’s some piece or step you expected to be pretty quickly gotten and it wasn’t, that might be worth dropping a hint earlier on to get eyes on it again.

The idea there is that "hints" come in the form of intercepted transmaissions/spy intel.

Ah, okay. I thought that new messages just added more "fodder" for the decryption.

So I think I’m going to pull my CCCC from the OK room here as I think that room’s cryptics are intended to be easier than that one is, and it hasn’t seen any progress in a good while. Anyone think that’s cool? ...not cool?

not cool :)
just kidding, go ahead

2:21 PM
Psh, who are you to have an opinion of what happens in the OK room ;)

OK, fine? ... :)

CCCC: Song from the King in the Castle about endless dunes? (8)

give them the hint as well maybe?
and post an alternative there if you would? thanks

People who want the hint can go find it, I’ll post it here in 24 to 48 if it’s still unsolved

I dont think adding more encrypted messages would be particularly helpful lol

@GarethMcCaughan good idea
but only 2 CCs left before CCross is done :(

@Avi search on wordplays.com for ideas ;)

@hexomino :-)

@OmegaKrypton only 1 left to go :(

I think the pinned CCCC might be sandpiper (a small island bird), but I'm not sure how to tie the clues together.
It also fits the hint (i as 6th letter).

@Hosch520 welcome here! The CCCC pinned has already been solved. Check the conversation above to find the answer, CHAFFINCH. The next CCCC is being constructed.

Ohh, sorry!
I never read past the hint :(
For the record, I'm not great at puzzles; I'm just trying to solve them to keep from going insane because there's nothing to do at work.

3:50 PM
@Avi Look in a few different dictionaries and thesauruses (thesauri?) for inspiration. You could also try a site like this, to find existing clues for a given word.
