An Euler's identity is an identity, in which each of the following appears once and only once: the constant $0$: neutral element for addition; the constant $1$: neutral element for multiplication; the constant $e$: base of natural...

@Deusovi Sadness. It could probably be trivially modified but I’m too lazy to do it
@Rubio If that’s the case, I’d be grumpy because “parts” is not a clear definition for Demesnes - also, is it demenses or demesnes?

I always get that twisted.
Whoops!

Avi
It could be deMeSNes? dee from D, es from S, and MSN from hyMNS

@GentlePurpleRain Implausibly plausible: DEMESNES is DEE, ESS, and the last half of hyMN all woven together into deMesNes = lands = “parts” as in “parts unknown”.

Avi
It’s hymn’s last half, so the last 3 characters can count as half.
Otherwise, it looks like you’re attributing the letter ses to the S sound
Either way, I think the whole “demesnes” thing is a bit sketchy

Nah, follow the bold vs caps vs. nothing. It’s clearly dee and ess and an M and N at regular intervals
In fact spelling it right makes that even more pronounced
I don’t necessarily think it’s right, but it’s not so bad that I’d slap my customary (and too long now absent) #BadC4Solutions on it :)

Avi
6:16 AM
Ok, I see what you’re getting at. Still (maybe Deusovi is rubbing off on me), I will be grumpy if that was the intended solution.

@GentlePurpleRain This is a partial guess, but I suspect it might be DESCANTS - def "hymn's parts," D + ES (sounds like the letter "S") + CANTS, but can't seem to figure out how to get CANTS from "woven into last half"

Avi
Could also be “to” derived from into’s last half

regardless of what the answer is i'll be grumpy before my morning coffee, and happy afterwards

@Deusovi The blue Send button on this page?

Huh?

@Deusovi You'd be very surprised if Rubio didn't have what where? The thing and location being discussed immediately above were a blue Send button on this page.

"it" being the CCCC answer, "there" being with his comment

Ah!

@Deusovi @Rubio but in a sense (woven) is here an anagram indicator, and this would render the whole clue an indirect anagram or are we allowed to intertwine words as such?

8:00 AM
“Woven” has the usual meaning - words intertwined in order
It’s not an anagram at all
I believe Deus’ guide has an example of this very thing with two words
Hm maybe not

#2. i learned something today :)
can 's be the connector between 2 wordplays?

It can be “is” abbreviated, so can go anywhere “is” as a connector could
Between def and wordplay or between two definitions in a ddef
there shouldn’t be two wordplays in a normal cryptic.
Not sure what you’re calling #2 here
The repercussion clue?

no i mean 2 parts of a wordplay
eg: *tras+h, then 's between crashed star'S hot capital

eh. I don’t think I would do that
Did you link the right page? I don’t see anything like that there

8:21 AM
@Rubio The guide doesn't, but I wrote the clue "Trained weaving stiff footwear (8)" at one point as a CCCC

Ah that’s the one

(and now I would probably be more strict about it and say there needs to be a comma in there)

Q: Can we make posts just as parts of a puzzle?

John ZhauLet's say I want to spread a puzzle into several small parts and want to limit the puzzle to just interactions inside puzzling.SE. For example, players have to use SE's search bar with clues in the main puzzle to search for the spread out posts. Can I make some posts that only hold small pieces ...

11:24 AM
FWIW I saw "demesnes" about three minutes after the clue was posted but couldn't find any way to make "parts" be a definition of "demesnes". So I hope it's wrong :-).
(though I didn't see how to make it an actual regular intertwining as opposed to an anagram -- it didn't occur to me to put the M and N in the middle rather than at the ends.)
Incidentally, definitely MN and ESS not MNS and ES. I don't think you can use MNS as "half of hymns".

1 hour later…
1:13 PM
@Rubio This is correct. DEE and ESS and MN woven together. I realize that "parts" is not the best definition for DEMESNES, but I think it works with a little imagination. (It's in the Thesaurus)

@GentlePurpleRain It's super sketchy - a synonym is not necessarily a valid definition
@Rubio is it GO + A?

it is. :)

Avi
ok, coming up with one

@Avi A synonym is generally fine as a definition in a cryptic clue (unless I'm missing something), but "part" and "demesne" just aren't synonyms so far as I can see. I mean, a demesne can be a part of something, but anything can be a part of something.
anyway, no matter; I'm sure I've perpetrated worse myself.

Avi

CCCC: Suffering a gentleman's first troll letter, pronounced (8)

3:54 PM
@GarethMcCaughan But "parts" and "demesnes" are not the same as "part" and "demesne". I interpret it like Rubio said: "these parts".

4:26 PM
I still don't get it, I'm afraid. "These parts" just means "here". A demesne can happen to be here, just as a city or a field can, but PARTS can't define CITIES or FIELDS.

@Rubio I'm trying to think of a context in which go and lead are synonyms (or hyponym/hypernym), and can't offhand.

to where does that doorway {go|lead}

ah

@GentlePurpleRain actually I said "parts unknown" which is a bit better support for your meaning

4:54 PM
Nope, still (sorry!) completely confused. Doesn't "parts unknown" just mean "unknown places"? Again, a demesne is in a particular place, just as a city or a field is, but "demesnes" is no more a synonym/definiendum for "parts" or "places" than "cities" or "fields".
Again, of course this isn't a big deal and I'm sorry to go on about it. But as long as I keep seeing justifications that don't make any sense to me I'll explain why they don't make any sense to me :-).

You know you missed 'em. Time to bring it back. It's time for ... Today’s Bad C4 “Solution”™️!
Our gentleman is obviously named Vance, as in Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration. Someone with an illness is often said to suffer from their ailment, so someone suffering may have a disease; here, our disease is ADD. The part about first troll letter is clearly Avi just trolling us, so we ignore it. So now, if we put our gentleman in "suffering", we have AD(VANCE)D, or pronounced (def.). Easy! #BadC4Solutions

Sara Chipps on November 13, 2019

In my very first blog post, I wrote about what a personal experience taught me about the Stack Overflow community. I said we were going to step back and re-evaluate how we deliver feedback, how we can improve content quality, and how we can reduce friction between people. I said that our goal is to have the question asking process be painless and beneficial for new people and Stack Overflow veterans alike.

During this re-evaluation period, we noticed something in our reputation reward system. We give anyone who receives an upvote on an answer ten additional reputation points, but only give five reputation points to people who receive an upvote on a question.  …

Well. Not the scores, but the value of the upvotes.

is "ended" a valid indicator for the end of a word?

I'd say no, because there's no way to use it to mean the end of something
"end of X" works because it literally means the last part of X
"X ended" doesn't mean that

and holy moly the surface
could be "by" siezing (contains) "means of gathering resources"
alternatively, "obstructs" by (next to) "siezing means of gathering resources"
Supporter of ending to capitalism is not necessarily related to Soviet Union
could be Libertarians
or Anarchists - though, those are probably a bit too long
Recidivism rip
Supporter of ending to capitalism - LMAO if this was taxpayer

@Avi some more indicators: "Obstructs" can mean "contains", in the sense that it bars the word from getting out. "Ending" can mean "last letter". "Supporter of" can mean "appearing beneath in a Down clue". "Gathering" can mean "anagramming". "Resources" can mean "letters". I may've missed some.

Avi
10:17 PM
;-; I think I'm done
but thanks a bunch for the indicator list

"gathering" as anagrind seems suspect to me

I suppose "seizing" can mean "anagramming", in the sense of "having a seizure". I'd not be happy with that.

Is it valid to create new tag - "ascii-art"? Thinking about using it for puzzles where visually reasoning about the placement of ASCII characters is required to deduce a solution
In that, I'm creating the tag because I have such a puzzle, and I hope somebody can put that as the intent on the tag-wiki

In general, singleton tags are not helpful and are discouraged.

10:24 PM
Yeah, if you can find a fair amount of other puzzles that it would apply to, then maybe it's a good idea. But tags for one puzzle aren't very useful.

@Rubio and are eliminated by the software after a while, if I'm not mistaken

Nightly run kills off tags with no or just one member, if memory serves.

10:28 PM
I mean, it's like a rebus, except you have to construct the Rebus
and the meaning isn't derived from the Rebus, but rather from the words formed

okay - that doesn't affect whether it should have a tag yet

Avi
I don't expect there should be too many of the puzzle out there

Then it likely doesn't need the tag.

Avi
It's definitely possible to create more, though

For that matter, I'm not even sure that would require representing something as ASCII art along the way, but of course I haven't seen the puzzle.

10:29 PM
