I found the exact rules now and apparently you can choose not to make any actions at all...
that means player one would guaranteed have an advantage; if it weren't for the way the starting set up works
tbh I don't really like the idea of no moves but then again i guess it makes sense

Q: Tips for making board game victory sequence puzzles

Destructible Lemon(I might ask on meta for a new tag and term to describe these puzzles. "board game victory sequence puzzles" is unwieldy.) I was thinking of making a Homeworlds puzzle, which would be analogous to chess mate puzzle, except that Homeworlds doesn't have checkmate, (but on the other hand a chess pu...

Q: 7x6 Grid Anagrams #1

prog_SAHILSolve out these 6 letter anagrams and fit them into a 7x6 grid such that the first and last column read out name of a famous author. IABCUL RBHKEO RGIEAH LIABEL ELDWEC ETMNEI OASUJS

@DestructibleLemon Microsoft Publisher can do that
Also for people who can review LQPs, the queue is red!

but that's microsoft publisher
I think I had an idea for a puzzle, utilizing imgur links.... it would be quite difficult, I think though, to make, but it could be fun...

We've had puzzles utilizing imgur links before. There's even a tag for them: [imgur-maze].
(But I'd like to see yours!)

4:12 AM
yeah, I didn't make it very clear
did i
i don't think it would be an imgur maze
actually I think it might be better if I don't explain

well, whatever it is, I look forward to seeing it c:

thanks!
the only thing is that if I make it correctly, maybe the last part isn't strong enough to support the rest of the puzzle...
I guess I'll think of something
the only issue is that the answer doesn't have an especially convenient way of being expressed

4:29 AM
that's... an issue

i guess you can use images though
not super big issue, just that it won't have a nice single word or phrase or explanation answer
anyway, you will see the puzzle when it's done
thoughts on using tags as hints?
not sure I will, but whatever
anyway, this puzzle will probably be pretty big so you might have to wait a while?
I might make a different puzzle in the meantime though

@thecoder16, chess puzzles aren't extremely popular on this site, but they're easy for people on HNQ to relate to.

8:59 AM
This is another thing that happens when nothing happens for awhile.
(In other words say hello to the newmn when they arrive. The previous one would have made a more complete sentence.)
(As if anyone asked, thismn found the end of the fuse and is now working backward. and is grateful to have found a lillypad here along the way.)
(Not how it sounds! I just found the top step and am walking down. See you along the way.)
(On the way up the sights were grand. That's why I said, once, get used to being right all along. Beyond that is a chance to let it all hang out. Beyond that, is a ladder down. "Silly human race.")
... one of these days, still, if there's hope, I'll be fully humAn.
meanwhile I'm just A hole.
(and A poet)
... all that was an attempt to say goodbye to those who get it... now I'm asking for a new breath of youtube. The neighbors are already calling the authorities.
[yeah, I'm admitting to a loss of mind but not of hearing, and the neighbs are used to that much]
... don't make me play Spirit!
... instead ...
(really, when you lose your mind it might take a couple of years to admit it, but until then...)
... this is what happens during an interlude ... mas musica pro tempore ...
(I see you boboquack, and I have a sweet duet in mind... bassoon and clarinet)
.... haven't found the best rendition yet, but it has been transcribed for viola and violin, as well as for trombone and euphonium ... it's by Beethoyouknow.
many good performances online but none of them completely lets go.
You've probably already found it. WoOoOoOoOoO 27
It's so difficult to play that most performers don't realize how crazy free it's meant.
Most of the notes don't need to be hit on target.
It is delicious, though, to hear each one served up . . . .
Et tu, @ffao, if you're really here, one recent remark was aimed toward you. I got used to being right, and left, and uppercut (and now I'm getting used to being wrong).
It's fun both ways. Get used to it.
Ow. That was my keystrokes talking. That's what I'm getting used to now. I've been too used to letting the fingers do the typing.
One of these days what's left of my mind will retake the helm.
... but, no, no relief, someone please post youtube music while we're not solving the world's puzzles . . .
. . .there was a ? mark in there . . .
. . . has it really been that long since the last videorama? If I had to dig deeper all that would show up is lint.
Or is it that you (whoever you are) feels like it has to be impressive? Were that the case I wouldn't be taunting you.
Don't make me to Sunday in the Park!
[sorry about the links not showing up]
As soon as someone blurts in with topic-appropriate matter I'll stifle. Until then, with better links if they work, this is filler.
At this time, I presume, anything is fair game. Someone else please throw in a bone. Or else.
Exclaimer: this is a brilliant song. Disclaimer: need it be said?
Gotta notice how these performers clutch their microphones and search for the camera. They're barely aware of each other.
That deserves an antacid.
(that was before Queen)

10:28 AM
Can I submit a puzzle even if it's incredibly easy?

I don't know why humn thinks I'm right all the time -- I certainly try to, but I always fail in one way or another :)

ok maybe incredibly is exaggerating

Thank you both, ffao and Destructible Lemon, for continuing this absurdity.
Back to you, @Destructible Lemon, you have already posted many toughies. Indulge yoruself with an easy! (For what this opinion is worth.)
@ffao, you once made me feel like I was right. It's only fair to return the favr.
And it's so easy.

@DestructibleLemon If easy doesn't mean that it is too broad, you can post it. It may not get you much attention, though. But difficulty shouldn't be the principal metric. Is it fun? is more important, in my opinion.

!

10:35 AM
(Whether a puzzle is seen as fun or as difficult varies with each solver, of course, so, yeah ...)

I just tried to curse you in a positive way, @MvOehm and the computer seized up. So, in other words, curse you in a positive way!
As already stated, I'm losing my mind and as only in some ways stated, I cheer for others! But as begged, any music?
I have millions of zigabytes of music that already shared with the neighbs. And they're still not satisfied.
(They still haven't called the cops. And I'm still as inquisitive as could be to what others are hearing.)
Don't make me play Einstein on the Beach . . .
One two three four one two three four onetwothreefouronetwothreefour
Okay, I'll play nice (until your turn):

Sid
@DestructibleLemon Sure. We can always do with some easy puzzles. :-)
I am confused by this C4. Two word CCs usually tend to be ddefs... but this doesn't seem to be.
Plus words like "back" and "cross" means there is always room for some evil thing happening. :P

10:50 AM
It's not a ddef. I'll post a hint at the 24h mark,

Unhinged = 8 letters
(I had a hatchback for two decades and "unhinged" was appropriate.)
(which half of that sentence refers to which are both true)
"She was half German and half out of bed. Which half was which needn't be said."'
No rounding influence? If not, some sweet sounds will follow this:
^that was NOT the visual version intended. But the musical version is tasty.

The chords!

11:32 AM
Hullo!
Long time no see, PSE folks
Nice to see you still round the mulberry bush, @humn !

Here we go!

Ooh, Khachaturian. A favourite of mine

There's a puzzle coming toward you, @TheGrE. It's based on something that was solved year after year.

I'll look forward to it :)

We had to find a campground where everyone could park. Then we had to find boats to rent and launch.
And the best part was coming back to port. That part I won't give away right now.

11:36 AM
We had to find a gaslight within the rotten dark. Then we all came back to our favourite haunt.
And the best part was never having second thoughts. But that's a distant fantasy now.

Yet here we are, to tell almost all of the story.

As if 'story' could ever be singular.

Have you been writing a new one lately?
Loaded question.

Q: Mortin Myes' is at it again! 'HOW TO READ.'

TheGreatEscaperMortin Myes' has blasted back onto the minimalist art scene with a painting titled 'HOW TO READ.' Modern art critics from around the world are puzzling over the meaning of this abstract work, and how on earth it got it's title. Care to teach them a thing or two?

!

11:39 AM
How timely, @Sphinx!
I'm afraid this one is hardly as interesting as the last
Just a quick diversion at best, probably

Welcome back!

Much appreciated :)

But there is another test at this crossing... youtube?
(Nobody will notice, could be anything)

Ahaha. There's some pieces in the works
At around december 12th I'll be free to properly practice, write, and/or record

Oh oh oh, your own!!!! When they're ready.

11:43 AM
And one of Karg Elert's that I've grown quite fond of
I don't believe there's a single recording of that piece online
But it's quite a fun piece

Very intrigued.
And looking him up.
Wow. You don't take the easy route.

this piece comes with a map
!

yah

In the meanwhile, for a change of pace

So, unable to hear a recording of it, I'll challenge you to give it life.
thank you!

Ithanks agin!

Two songs that have been on loop on my mind's ear for a while

Listening to the first, first, what a strong beat!
Makes me think you've been playing some sports.
(Coming from an athletic freak.)

Just a little hoopshooting

No kidding! I tried that a couple of years ago and it's weird how everything is easier the second time around.

11:55 AM
Everything's easier apart from first times
First times, I've found, are difficult no matter how many I've experienced
But on the topic of seconds, here's a second movement I adore:

24h hint for the C4: There is some separation going on in the clue, maybe a bit too much for its own good.

Sid
11:59 AM
@TheGreatEscaper Hiya! Interesting puzzle, I see.

been through a few pairs of speakers

@Sid unfortunately not particularly
But what can one do after a long dry spell

harbinge = 8 letters

Sid
@MOehm If you mean Hatch Back Cross Piece, that isn't really a hint especially after you say it's not a ddef

I want to go T-top but it dosn't have enough letters.... and last time I did turned into an arrest.
(Thank you for the videos, @TheG, I owe you some Borodin.)
Before all that, who's heard of Phi(l?)ip Glass? Or Laurie Anderson?

12:06 PM
@Sid Well, consider it an excuse then. :)

Just to scan, does everyone here even hear sounds and music the way we think most do? I'll never know. Think so, but it's so subjective.

Hm
Does perfect pitch count?

Show off!
By now I might too. Wasn't easy getting there.

Sid
(Site seems to be getting an influx of Chess puzzles...)

But I so wonder why the cops haven't arrived to turn off my system.

Not ashamed to say I'm not as fast as him

@Sid , I love chess the way I love volleyball, which is why nobody wants to play me: The rules are more fun than the goal.

Being able to do what he does at any speed seems like something of a superpower.

Sid
@humn That.... seems to be an interesting perspective

Okay. Has ANYONE got context for the 14 star message on the side?
14 (I worked it out. I have a guess but need sex to confirm) - sep 26 at 21:47 by feelinferrety

12:14 PM
puzzle in which the sex <i>of the people named in the puzzle</i> is relevant
I think there was a not-so-well-known Indian name or something, and something to do with sons and daughters and the like

Ah, right

sooo much less fun than it sounds
what I don't know is whether FF phrased it that way on purpose

Like so much, including perfect pitch, sometimes I wonder -- hope -- if it's a step toward something else.

@humn i'm working on a literal story I think you might find somewhat interesting

Sid
@GarethMcCaughan Gender-neutral name

12:19 PM
It's called 'Seaside Cabinet', and is my little side project for next year

So that's one of the things you've be up to lately.
My imagination just geared up thanks to your saying that, TheG.
Why did you choose Seaside? The waves? The restfulness? The agitation? The sunset? Sunrise?
The edge?
No need to answer right now.

The tide.

Gotta find out what you mean. And will.
Patience is one of my only virtues.

It's a good one to have!

Impatience is what brings adventure. Really, my poor father understood recently how many times I was lost.
I have unending patience with others.
And an impetuous drive toward danger when left alone.
There's no good explanation why I'm here to tell the story.

12:30 PM
Is there ever a good explanation?
I've yet to hear a question starting with 'why...' answered in any way but silence

(someone's gotta say it: there's no way to follow that)
But when you play a note, or when you post a post, don't you feel like it's all caution to the wind?
I play ultimate frisbee. In a way that has inspired others to do it right.
They see me doing it wrong, with abandon.
They became superstars.
(Not making that up. I'd rather do something wrong and spur others to do better than to do it right and scare them off.... as if there were a choice._

Yeah, caution to the wind
I've learnt to trust the way it blows, though

... and in the meanwhile people pay me to help them look like they're doing it right ... which they are, whether or not they know why.
@TheGrE, you've given away more, well, perhaps, what you meant to.
hang on!
Another video?

Janacek!

just a poke, but it turned out to be a nice version

12:47 PM
Janacek has some great stuff, and some stuff which falls a little flat to me. Thankfully that sinfonietta fits neatly in the former

Yeah, the Sinfonietta is really good.

Everything has its merits.

how does a two-word CC even work?
how do you have wordplay like that? o_o

It could be a double definition. (But it isn't in this case.)

Hatch back and cross piece can be taken separately. Combined with it being &lit, for some automobile part, perhaps.

12:59 PM
Does it have to be a double definition, or could the whole thing be a definition (like I think maybe SEATBELT would fit that)?

I've already admitted that the words must be separated, so you get more words at the price of two.

@MOehm a quick solve, as I expected

It could also be &lit, as Apep suggested, but this one isn't.
@TheGreatEscaper Yes, but no as quick as it looks. I had first tried to draw boxes and make "negative" letters. For example the left stem of the E's could be made into a rectangle with two strokes coming in from the right, which would read as E, too. But that didn't work, of course.
Nice visual puzzle.

Sid
@TheGreatEscaper I love that smiley in the end. Nice puzzle

That smiley sure has an evil grin. :]

1:06 PM
Haha. Hopefully a harbinger of more devilish puzzles to come?

(ROOD+PART)< = TRAPDOOR
Hatch is def; cross is ROOD; piece is PART; back is reversal indicator

Sid
I didn't know ROOD is a word. Nice clue that.

Hah. Nice.

wow

@Apep Bingo!
Rood is a word I only know from crosswords.

1:10 PM
15 miles on the """" canal

"""" canal sounds nasty

I thought it had to be split from the cryptic police comment, but was nowhere near trapdoor

There's an old English poem (well, old enough that it's Old English which is not really English) called "The Dream of the Rood". Other than that, yeah, it's a crossword-and-Scrabble word.

Nice one apep

oh, actually, I think there may be some rood-derived term in church architecture that's still used sometimes nowadays. "Rood screen" or something like that.
Yup, rood screen it is.

1:11 PM

well, what can I say? the world is full of somewhat interesting facts.

Just for the record, I love this place!

^^

But I want more!

1:13 PM
And this is supposed to be a chatroom, where we can talk about these facts. You can save the silence for the rood screen.

I was merely observing - I do enjoy it all!

More Youtube.... don't make me look up what you spelt once, GMcC.

not sure what you're referring to, @humn. I was actually about to post a YouTube link, but it turns out that the thing I was going to link to (a rather nice setting of the text of TDOTR by composer Howard Ferguson) doesn't seem to be on YouTube.

@thecoder16 No. Direction=E. New=N.

New is N, direction can be arbitrarily chosen

@TheGreatEscaper could have saved it for a 4C if you think it's good, TGE (for the record I don't know the answer)

I'll never get a C4 :P

@TheGreatEscaper Oh, you will. Don't worry about that.

I thought that, but I got one just two days ago after trying for 3months You just have to keep trying.

It’s all about how your mind works and how the solution works, eventually you’ll find a connection

^

hey, I even solved one once and I never do CCs
I couldn't even make it through Deu's tutorial. I still have to try to get through it again

Sid
Deus didn't mention about Cryptic definitions in his tutorial. I wonder why...

Yeah the tutorial was hard to read. The best way to learn is to read a bunch of old solutions.

2:10 PM
It didn't click to me at all until I read the tutorial - even if only to make me realize it's a lot more structured than it appears at a first glance

Sid
^That

Cryptic definitions probably wouldn't make good standalone CCs. They work in crosswords because they are restricted/confirmed by intersecting words.

The bad result is that now I get annoyed when the cryptic reading is not valid English

@Sid They're not cryptic clues in the same sense. (Lots of places don't even consider them to be valid clues.) There was a bit of discussion on this in the comments below the guide.

As mentioned in those comments, cryptic defs are quite common in respectable UK cryptics.

2:20 PM
As you may know, I'm not from the UK. :P

No, but cryptic crosswords are :-).
Incidentally @Deusovi did you see my plug for a local puzzle-hunt-ish thing?
(Local to me, not to you.)

In any case, they're not Ximenian. UK setters tend to lean more libertarian, which is fine when you know what you're doing, but IMO people should be introduced to Ximenian-style cluing first in order to see the structure behind cryptic clues. @thecoder16 mentions that reading solutions is a good idea, which I agree with, but without knowing the basic structure of cryptics they can seem like a jumbled mess (and not just in the case of anagram indicators!)

Yes, I agree that one should start with very strictly Ximenean clues to get the hang of how to parse them.

No, I don't believe I did see it.

pablosath.com -- "armchair treasure hunt", running annually in the UK for several years now.

2:29 PM

The contest is typically a PDF thing of, say, 10-20 pages full of interrelated [enigmatic-puzzles]; solving everything will lead you to an actual physical location somewhere in the UK where you can find the "treasure". If you don't have a team member located in the UK, you can contact the organizers to register a virtual find.

One of the coolest Ghibli posters I've seen ^^

This year's hunt hasn't started yet but there might be some clues in the poster on the website. Also, you can see past years' hunts and (at least for some of them) solutions, to get an idea of how they tend to work.

Me too, but maybe because it's the only Ghibli poster I've seen :p

A good team might do the whole thing in a week or two, though I can't help suspecting that Deusovi and his pals might turn out to be embarrassingly quick :-).

2:31 PM
Cool nonetheless

(Though there are sometimes UK-specific cultural references etc. which might slow TSPI down a bit.)

@MOehm ...No? Sleeping upright is not possible...

Yes I know. That was a bad joke, sorry. (But in a room with 5' circumference, you won't be able to lie down.)
