@Rubio sorry to bother you but are you, by any remote possibility, participating in World Sudoku Championship 2017

That seems like a random question, so I'm going to assume that there's some reason why it isn't one. But to answer it - no, I am not. :)

Albert So I've been up all night trying to solve this. I got as far as eliminating the power of \del letters in the spelling of each following picture. Hi guys, a friend of mine gave me the following puzzle in order to know the location and time of our meeting but I couldn't crack it because I cannot understand solfège (do-re-mi)
Here is the puzzle:

G4 C2 F4 D3 B2 C2 C3 G4 A4 C2 F4 D2 B4 E2 F3 G4 G4 G2 D4 B4 G3 B4 C3 D4 C2 B2 D3

I doubt that solving this has much to do with understanding solfege.
The obvious musical interpretation of the numbers would be as octave indicators, but in that case there's no way this is a plausible melody.
(Too many really big leaps.)
So there's surely some other thing going on, and it doesn't look to me like there's enough information here to make it clear what.

Please download this file:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B7x4BoOdwK8TV3NNSmQ5aE90ZVk
It contains the song of the puzzle

nope, not downloading mystery files off the internet, sorry
but if it's the notes G4, C2, etc., then I can already tell it's not going to make much sense as music

11:47 AM
Too easy
@Anastasiya-Romanova秀 Upload it on youtube if you want us to listen to it

Sid
@GarethMcCaughan how about thinking it as chess squares?

@GarethMcCaughan Please. I guess you can consider me as a credible user. LOL

That's what the bot said

@Avigrail Wait, let me try

11:55 AM
Wait. I have to create a video first since YouTube cannot accept the audio file

@Anastasiya-Romanova秀 I see you're into Naruto. This makes you a credible user if nothing else!

@Avigrail Ya, I love manga and anime

@Sid yeah, chess squares sound at least as plausible as music. Except then it's a bit odd that we have only A-G and 2-4.

@Anastasiya-Romanova秀 I didn't know there was an Anime.SE

Q: What can go up a chimney down, but not down a chimney up?

HawkeyeHere's one I know from childhood. I didn't see it on here, so I thought I would add it. What can go up a chimney down, but not down a chimney up?

@Sphinx Isn't this a chestnut?

It is, but that isn't by itself a bad thing

I seem to remember reading somewhere that we're fairly anti-chestnut. Not that it matters particularly, just remembering what I saw.

Unfortunately most chestnut riddles are also technically too broad, though I think we tend to give that a pass when the answer is a much better fit than the other wildly speculative things people inevitably try to come up with to show it's too broad. :)
A lot of chestnuts don't qualify for that pass, and those we tend to get a bit chuffish about

@Sphinx Pure math (and it looks like a homework question even).

agreed
I was about to say something about it :P

wow @humn - very very pretty:
$\raise-5mu{\Huge\color{#aea}\bullet}\llap{\large\color{#7a7}\bigcirc} \llap{\raise0mu{\large\color{#090}\checkmark}\kern0mu}~$ This is what I get too — humn 17 hours ago
I'm sorely tempted to steal that

humn is a MathJax wizard.

Where do I pay?

@Mithrandir yup, they use MathJax for everything except math, for which they use plain superscript and subscript

I've been using $\color{green}{\checkmark \small\text{Accept}}$ for some time now but that's ... so .... pretty .....

(i just had an XKCD giraffe moment. probably shouldn't be in here in class but eh)

Q: The reason why?

Dr tI am why the sky is blue And why we sleep at night. I am why soap cleans your face And sliced onions make you cry, I am why your ice cubes float And coffee keeps you sharp But most of all I am why Food tastes so good And why love feels oh so fine.

7:05 PM
@Rubio For me, it shows the green fill as smaller than the border...

Same here

And the check is the wrong font :P

well yeah but there's not much that can be done about that

Seriously though, that is pretty impressive. I had no idea that the formatting options were so extensive.

the fill on the other hand, might be possible to adjust for

7:10 PM
I might play with it at another time to see if it might be improved on
Good god, your 4C is still live?

I know I had to tweak a lot on my "What is a ... Word™" template to adjust for different devices, because the overlap formatting in MathJax is not exactly precision

it still doesn't work on the mobile app, but that might be nitpicking

yeah I suppose another hint is in order. This is probably not a particularly forward-solvable clue

Sid
@feelinferrety I think that also has to do with the relative quietness in the chat recently

Yeah, I noticed that. Like, there was a week where everyone didn't work and instead played Contact all day, but the last week or two has been pretty barren.

7:13 PM
@ffao It "works", but the highlighting bleeds above the box on the mobile app. Or at least does for me. But there's nothing I can do to fix that that wouldn't break everywhere else much worse.

:| What one wouldn't do for some functional CSS

@Rubio Was this the hint, or just a comment on the upcoming hint?

When you do post the hint, you should make it a mega post of all hints

all... two hints

You're kidding, he didn't give anything for the first week??
(Or approximation thereof)

7:17 PM
Chat's been dead. Nobody even mentioned it. I actually forgot myself. :)

pffft

A new hint has been added.

Oh for crying out loud... you mods and your overarching editing capabilities
You'll miss it if you're ever deposed, sir (?).
*mutter* I think that's right by now but still not sure *mutter*

Sid
Yeah, people have been busy recently

@feelinferrety Mega edit privilege is half the reason I ran for mod. :)

7:19 PM
FFFFFFFF My asterisks are not behaving

(no markdown parsing in multiline messages)

Sid
@Rubio the other half was to ban yourself?

I ran on that platform. I never actually said I would ban myself. :)

I think that was actually Mith's platform. :)
(Considering his (?) (also think that's right...) admission to having a guinea pig sock)

7:20 PM
The best part of banning myself is that I could in fact actually do it. It would just have no effect whatsoever.

Sid
@Rubio you do understand that if people voted for you, they voted for your platform too. :P

Of course. I supported my platform. I am fully in support of banning me.

XD XD XD

I just never indicated I would do the banning myself. :)

Also I posted this to Facebook a couple days ago but nobody seemed to catch on. Would you folks?
> Sooo... as of this afternoon, there is a certain letter key on my workstation setup that won't type no matter how forcefully I press it, even after cleaning. I'll give you three guesses as to what it is. Hint: You might phrase it as a meme....

Sid
7:23 PM
That is exactly how politicians speak! Confirmed: Rubio is a politician. :P

No, a politician would find ways of avoiding an actual answer to your question
PIZZA TIME BRB

Btw, and maybe I'm the only one who has this problem, but- anyone here (a) use Firefox, (b) use the SOX userscript here and (c) notice that if a chat banner should pop up - say, a scheduled event comes up, or you lose network connectivity for a bit, or whatever - that the browser goes insane and locks up entirely?

Lemme know if y'all solve that ^^^

@Rubio (a) yes (b) no

Sid
@feelinferrety I faintly remember B was in a meme sometime ago. Maybe that?

7:25 PM
revised. You use chrome, right?

@feelinferrety I have 4 socks
@Rubio yup
And I've certainly suspended my sock before, although I never ran on that platform

it could be any of these letters - b d j q x z
I assume b or d, though I know no meme relevant to either

BTW, @Rubio, I managed to suspend a mod the other day... but they could still chat, although nobody could unsuspend them until more black magic was done

I saw - but that was only chat-suspended

@feelinferrety Y?
U?

7:28 PM
"key" and "You" rule out both Y and U

Ah, yes

No j q x or z, but that's just English
No b or d, that's more indicative.

Dee Dee button, maybe?

The absence of the otherwise relevant word "keyboard" (instead of "workstation setup") is, unfortunately, of no help deciding between "b" and "d"

No mention of 'button'
'this afternoon', not 'today'

7:40 PM
"forcefully" instead of "hard"

Ah! Good catch!
I'd guess it's 'd' then.

@Mithrandir CORRECT! FeelinFerrety had to requisition a keyboard today because... "she wants the D"
Considering your discussion, i suppose that actually might not be a bad puzzle to post
Wow, I revitalized chat for a full 20 minutes and promptly murdered it again...

7:59 PM
Yeah, that happens

hey mith, would you rec. actually posting the above as a puzzle?
(and can i expect those who were present for the initial solving to recuse themselves? :) )

I think it'd be a fun puzzle, and you could just put in there that if you know the answer ("and you know who you are"), to let others solve it.

@feelinferrety ^

Thanks guys

Sid

@feelinferrety that is basically the norm

Hey guys, I am trying to figure out the solutions of Sam Loyd's rebuses and add them to my website. I have troubles with some of them, can someone help? I get them from here: https://samloyd.com/category/puzzles/puzzles-for-kids/
I put the solutions here: http://www.puzzleprime.com/casual-puzzles/

Which ones can't you do?

There are a lot... I am trying to finish only the Puzzle Sums, the ones I have solved are listed at the bottom of the puzzleprime page.

Well, as you say, there are a lot. Why not specify a few you'd like help with? Might get more answers than "hey, why don't you go digging through dozens of rebuses for me?".

You are right, I apologize. Will download and add all unsolved rebuses on this page. Whatever you can figure out, it will be very helpful. Thanks!

11:33 PM
@Sphinx VTC, magic trick != puzzle :\

11:48 PM
magic tricks can be good puzzles
that particular one I think isn't, but mainly because of the incomplete information and space of possibilities
many tricks rely on making you confused about what happened when, so a recollection might be (and often is) inaccurate

Anyone up for zendo?
