Q: What does the Fleeting Trail™ lead to?

Aric FowlerThis puzzle aims to test a concept I have. A list of clues is given, each referring to an item, place, idea, or other. Combining each answer with the next clue allows you find the answers in order until you reach the end of the trail. What does the Fleeting Trail™ lead to? An industry...

Q: Rubik's cube: Last edge problems (beginners method)

Computing CornWhen solving the Rubik's cube using the beginners method, the last step which solves the last layer edges only requires 1 step of the algorithm if one face is already completed. My problem is that when I have a complete face, I have to do the algorithm twice to solve. What am I missing?

One of the best things about puzzling, though, is that it can play a little beyond the bounds of formal mathematics. My crusade to allow 0 into every base, needed or not, allows for art:
^ that's a bunch of 0's in base -1 (square root of 1). The following is a bunch of 1s in base cube root of 1:
Without allowing meaningless 0s, neither of those would be possible.
(Deusovi both inspired those number-pictures and then solved them months after they were posed as puzzles.)
... bye again, i haven't had much of a chance to log in lately, just to try and keep up with a puzzle or two of mine ...

@humn :)
The problem with allowing 0s in "base 1" is that first of all, "base 1" isn't a proper thing - fixed radix systems don't allow a meaningful Base 1 to exist in their scheme, as the only allowable digit would be 0 and thus 0 would be the only value representable in it. If by "base 1" you mean a unary numbering system, with (as I described) a single digit value used in a tally system, then allowing zeroes makes it non-bijective - decimal 3 could be 111 or 10101 or 1000101 or ...
any arbitrary sequence of zeroes that contains exactly three 1s. that doesn't make for a particularly elegant system, even if it didn't violate the very premise of a unary system, so allowing zeroes isn't a good idea. limiting a unary system to, well, one digit value, is the only sensible thing to do.

A: What would base $1$ be?

amWhyYou're exactly right that such a system would be represented by the use of arbitrary tally marks. Such a system is known as a Unary Numeral System (Wikipedia Entry): The unary numeral system is the bijective base-1 numeral system. It is the simplest numeral system to represent natural numbers...

And you nuke everything similar out there?

No. Not everything.
But these sports people are persistent on Puzzling.

Thank God, real nukes aren't used that casually..

Basically, the answer is you can but it's usually a waste of time. But in this case, I haven't seen any of the watch online spam since we started nuking the accounts first.

So, do you just have an option to destroy them? Or is it a long process?

Too much work..

Q: Are users more likely to make mistakes with functionality which is easier to access?

GlorfindelWe're having a little discussion in the Teachers' Lounge (a site-wide chatroom for ♦ moderators). Sometimes, we need to destroy accounts (e.g. in the case of spammers). This is an operation which involves going to the user's profile and a couple of clicks in the following dialogs (not unlike fla...

Yeah, five clicks.

ah. i commented on your answer instead.

Oh, I didn't know that
Now everything makes sense

If that's not the answer I'll be shocked.

That puzzle deserved more appreciation, I was just going along until 4 but when I got 5 I thought "ah, this has to be right"

I have a particular appreciation for it. Just trying to make a minimal example for that kind of thing was surprisingly hard.

I had the feeling that would be the definition

@Rubio That's the one. Nice work.

I like that one out of two

:) yeah, me too. Was worried it might be too cryptic, so kept the rest clean. Glad you got it.

Rubio Clergyman's wife tells story about picking up a muscle. Solution: 5 words.

I would comment, but the title spoke for me

pretty much
looking at the CCCC, for "Thought about" there is considered, and for chewed up there is macerated, but both are too short :(

11 is a lot of letters

11:54 PM
It's, like, 2 more than 9.

But only 1 less than 12
