HATS ARE HAPPENING!

I just gave our very own Community ♦ a hat of its own:

@Doorknob冰 Incidentally, FWIW, I left this site when I saw that a large segment of the community actively resented the mods' efforts to maintain SE quality.

Please watch out for 2014-15 USAMTS Round 3 problems and flag them for moderator attention. This contest is on-going. meta.math.stackexchange.com/q/18745/18398

Q: Questions from on-going contests

Joel Reyes NochePlease refrain from answering questions that are from on-going contests. For example, this question is a 2014-15 USAMTS Round 3 problem. When you do see such a question, please flag for moderator action.

Q: Lateral Thinking -> Brainteaser

warspykingSince they're so much alike (See; What exactly is the point of lateral-thinking?) I suggested a tag not to long ago but it still didn't get much attention. So now I'm coming right out and begging for people to look at it! You can find it here; http://puzzling.stackexchange.com/tags/lateral-think...

is it possible to 'wear' more than one hat in your profile pic?
I deliberately got a pic with 3 people hoping to be able to do this!
@JonEricson - you know all about hats, right?
@Miniman - That is a very inappropriate remark. We don't resent the mods trying to maintain quality; we resented them trying to ban a certain class of question, which are what this site is all about and which higher-ups in the SE organisation have no problems with. And BTW they still haven't issued a clear statement as to whether they, the P.SE mods, still have a problem with it.

@randal'thor It's not supported by the system, but wearing several hats at once is easy enough to hack together.

4:54 PM
@JonEricson - You mean by pasting hats onto my profile image? I don't know much about graphics, but this should be manageable! I tried clicking 'Wear Hat' for two different hats, but the first one disappeared when I clicked to wear the second :-(

@randal'thor Yep. That's how I've done it in the past.

OK, thanks!
Of course it would then be possible to cheat by pasting in hats you haven't earned...

5:42 PM
@randal'thor Mods enforce community policies, regardless of personal beliefs. You'll note that none of the mods have gone on a closing or deleting spree.
Also note that question and answer quality has gone up dramatically since the infamous post.

Q: Are puzzles and riddles welcome?

VictorIt is really a shame that this question was still not properly settled. Are puzzles on-topic? Are riddles on-topic? Even if they are on-topic, are they welcome or just tolerated? If they are not on-topic, why? This comment from Jan Dvorak clearly shows that the on-topicness is still unclear a...

@Kevin - I do recall a certain moderator who went on a commenting spree threatening to close all riddle challenges, saying there had been a meta decision against them, when there hadn't.
Also note that activity has gone down dramatically since the infamous post.
Anyway the latest post on meta looks like a good place for all these issues to be resolved.

@randal'thor And how many of those did I actually close?

@Kevin - None AFAIK, but you may have caused a lot of people to stop posting riddles on the basis of an erroneous belief that you, a moderator, had given them.
You should be able to do your job better than that.

6:30 PM
There was significantly more support for restricting low-quality riddles than not at that point. You and d'alar'cop seem to scale the votes required for a consensus with how much you want it to be.

6:58 PM
If there's an SE policy on votes required for a consensus, I'd be very happy to see it.
There wasn't significant support for banning riddles (which is what you claimed was policy in the comments you left) even at that time. You must have recognised this when you deleted your comments.
You can delete your comments, but you can't admit you were wrong in so many words.

@Doorknob冰 and @Kevin - do you agree with Emrakul's sentiments here??

8:34 PM
@randal'thor As long as question and answer quality remain high, sure.

The big problem that led to the post was that the site got flooded with crappy questions and answers, basically all riddles.

Q: Should we be using specific users in puzzles?

EmrakulSomething's been on my mind a bit lately. We've had a not-insignificant quantity of community-made puzzles that use specific users as part of the puzzles. Is this an issue that needs handling? I know I, personally, have come up a couple times in puzzles. Here's a short list of links, which does ...

apparently I'm the biggest hatter on Puzzling.SE! :-o

8:56 PM
@randal'thor I have to get back on top of the network leaderboard, apparently I've fallen off it.

@Kevin - That Santa hat isn't one of the SE hats, is it?
you've had it for longer than that

Correct

how did you get the secret waffle?
or is it a secret?

Q: Winter Bash 2014 Secret Hats

KevinSo far, I've unlocked one of the secret hats. I'm wondering what other secret hats are out there and how to earn them.

Thanks!

10:26 PM
@Kevin regarding "the site got flooded with crappy questions and answers, basically all riddles", are you using the term "riddles" in a very broad sense? I seem to remember a flood of security-guard pattern questions
