Q: Posting a challenge, and answering it yourself

TheDoctorThere are a lot of users that are seemingly trying to get reputation by posting a simple challenges, like well-known riddles, and posting the answer. I'm fairly sure that these challenges are off-topic in many ways, and usually get downvoted. Is there any way we can discourage this behavior? I do...

I did one myself,

Q: How long does it take for the snail to get out of the well?

SQB A snail finds itself at the bottom of a 30 foot well. It crawls up 3 feet each day, but at night, while sleeping, it slips down 2 feet. How long does it take for the snail to crawl out of the well?

Q: Are puzzle preservation questions on topic?

Ice-9I don't know how this would work with puzzle types outside of jigsaws or puzzle boxes, but is it okay to ask about the best way to preserve a puzzle? I assume I would need to be specific... for example that this: How do I preserve a 3D jigsaw made of plastic? is better than this: How do...

I can see both sides on this one.

I would call that on topic

How about some feeds?

Hungry already?
No worries, I'll supply the corn

what an amaizing pun

I keep a generous supply in stalk

haha

you should mill it for all it's worth

Seth has stopped a feed from being posted into this room

That should work.

5 new feed items

@Seth Can you make them post directly into chat instead? Then we can @ reply and don't have to dismiss the box (which is annoying)
woo 100 questions!

whoops. Thought I did that

@WendiKidd I hate the box on Game Dev chat. But there's too much traffic there to post every question. Puzzling doesn't have that problem yet

10:58 PM
this is meta questions

@MichaelMyers You can remove the box entirely if you want. Game dev is a big enough site that you don't really need questions posted into the chat room to generate activity. I think that's the goal

@WendiKidd I have a userscript to dismiss that box. Because I hate it. I stopped going to the U&L chatroom for months, from the time they added the ticker feed to the time I found a way to suppress it.

@Seth I just did regular Qs
@Gilles I can haz script?

A: Can I silence ticker feeds in a chat room?

KeenYou can hide them on your browser using a user stylesheet. Install Stylish, and then create a new user style. In Firefox, paste the following into it: @namespace url(http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml); @-moz-document domain("chat.stackexchange.com"), domain("chat.stackoverflow.com"), domain("chat....

thanks!

Heh. That's what I get for dawdling to find a movie reference before posting

@MichaelMyers It's the first one I've actually been able to solve on my own in time to write an answer, so I'm just happy with that. Yours is better anyway; it has percentages and mathy stuff ;)

But I also actually calculated the infinite sums, so I've got that going for me, which is nice
I thought Jorge might actually win, and maybe he did in another iteration of the puzzle

He could! It's not as likely, but it's possible :)

If he has a 40% chance to hit, he winds up with a 53% chance
With a 60% chance to hit, it's 82%
but at that level of accuracy, maybe nobody ever pulls the trigger
I'll try to remember this if I'm ever in a Mexican standoff

I wonder what would happen if the 'players' didn't know how good the others were.
