Ughh close votes without a comment in private beta are so annoying

Q: The Worlds Hardest Sudoku

durron597Enjoy! Note: I put this program into the solver on sudokuwiki.org and it couldn't find any numbers. I then gave it cell H7 (the only cell with two possibilities) and still no luck. Then I gave it cell G7 (which became the only cell with two possibilities) and it was only able to solve one cell...

@durron597 but in this case there's plainly no question
and it's borderline spam to boot
This site has a serious problem with question quality, for a private beta
We have a lot of non-questions, and of already-asked-a-jillion-times stuff

2:43 PM
@Gilles The question is "solve this sudoku"
For what it's worth I only submitted the question to gauge the community interest in questions like that one. And I don't mind the close votes or the negative reaction... what I mind is the "close votes" without discussion... we are trying to figure out what is and is not appropriate
so it's not appropriate. fine. but tell the community why

@durron597 1. That isn't a question (did you mean “what's the solution of this sudoku?”? or “how can I solve this sudoku?”?). 2. You didn't state any question, we can't read your mind. 3. This reinforces my idea that “solve this puzzle” is not a good question for this site
This is a site for questions about puzzles, not for challenging people to solve puzzles

@durron597 If you want discussion, bring it up on meta.

There are lots of questions where people just post a puzzle
In fact I restrained myself from posting a lot of stuff for the reasons you describe
but then I've noticed that many users are posting just "here's a puzzle. go" and it's getting a lot of support and upvoting

@durron597 yes, it seems that everyone wants to post as many classic as they can. Which in itself is bad for a private beta.

Q: Is it on-topic to present specific logic puzzles or brainteasers as questions?

JaydlesThis Area 51 discussion suggests that posting brainteasers as questions should be allowed. I think these could be one of the most, accessible, interesting possible posts to keep the community engaged. (We're here because we like puzzles, right?) Eventually, we'll probably need to think as a gro...

But the reaction is far from unanimously positive, I'm not the only one who's close-voting the non-questions and finding it problematic on meta

@Gilles It's not useful to get mad at me about this. I'm just asking that we talk about it; it's private beta
I have not formed an opinion on this subject yet, I would love to hear a compelling argument from your side
> You should actively watch the earliest questions with an eye for quality and purpose. Ask yourself: “Is this the type of question we want on this site? Is it pushing the boundaries of on- and off-topic questions? Are we opening a can of worms?” Talk about these issues in meta, early and often. They are the key to establishing the boundaries around your site.
I'm just asking you to talk about it, not to support the question, I don't care if my question is closed, I just want to discuss why

My newest pet peeve is people posting questions and answers at the same time, and not giving others the chance to solve it.

@KendallFrey I agree, and that is a large part of why I posted this:

Q: Spoiler tags - should it be policy to use them?

durron597I feel like it should be policy that when the questions are "here is a riddle, please try to answer it" the answers should be required to make liberal use of spoiler tags. That way people can't accidentally get spoiled on answers before they even read the question. I think there should also b...

Maybe it's just me, but answering your own question immediately makes you look like a shameless rep whore.

@KendallFrey Agree also

A: Is it on-topic to present specific logic puzzles or brainteasers as questions?

durron597This is kind of a meta-answer. I don't know what the right policy should be, but the policy needs to be consistent Here, I posted a puzzle and asked the community to solve it. I got 6 upvotes and a generally positive response Here, I posted a really challenging sudoku, and asked the community ...

Anyone here?
What about you, @Doorknob?

Yes

Are we allowed to invite people to the private beta?
I know a few top quality puzzlers / board gamers who, to the best of my knowledge, aren't very involved in the SE network

Yep
Right side of the main page, halfway down
"Invite Fellow Experts"

@Kevin thanks
