Q: Which side is White: the reds or the blues?

LaskaHappy Halloween! This problem by Miguel Ambrona, 2024, has the following stipulation. We don't know which way round the board is, but we are told that one player retains castling right. Which side is White: the reds or the blues? This problem gives an example of a so-called "chess vampire", i.e....

C4 hint: "seeming… occurred" is an atom (I mean, without parts. It, entire, clues something). It clues two letters.

interesting

seems to me we're likely looking for a three-letter dish with an O in the middle
The WOK theory's still possible...

something like "playing possum" might mean seeming to break though that never actually occurred, but man i am not coming up with 2-letter words for that
POT is another dish with an O in the middle
13:17
@msh210 In pool if four balls do not hit cushions in a break, then it's a foul and the balls are reracked... so it seems like a break but does not actually count as having happened? I'm guessing that this is not what you mean.

@DanielS good guess

Q: How is this question on the Puzzling SE not trivial?

AllureLink to question Grandmaster Lev Alburt plays at least one game of chess a day to keep in shape and not more than 10 games in any consecutive seven-day period to avoid tiring himself out. Is it true that if he plays long enough there will be a series of consecutive days during which he will play...

Q: Find the sum of A, B, C and D

Blue HerringFrom the Intermediate Mathematics league of Eastern Massachusetts, Meet #1, October 2008: In the equation below, what is the value of $A + B + C + D$ if $A$, $B$, $C$ and $D$ are all positive integers? $$ \dfrac{1}{A + \dfrac{1}{B + \dfrac{1}{C + \dfrac{2}{D}}}} = \dfrac{13}{70} $$ I saw this q...

@Randal'Thor hah, nice to see puzzling spill out via HNQ instead of the other way around
@Jafe I thought this was 'spell out HNQ'. QNH. QNH. QNH.
questions "network hot?"
14:25
@juicifer No, about a two.
@PolygonPotpourri N(A2)O
Sodium oxide is a chemical compound with the formula Na2O. It is used in ceramics and glasses. It is a white solid but the compound is rarely encountered. Instead "sodium oxide" is used to describe components of various materials such as glasses and fertilizers which contain oxides that include sodium and other elements. Sodium oxide is a component. == Structure == The structure of sodium oxide has been determined by X-ray crystallography. Most alkali metal oxides M2O (M = Li, Na, K, Rb) crystallise in the antifluorite structure. In this motif the positions of the anions and cations are reversed...
heheh
I did wonder whether that was a possible compound lol (I forgot my high school chemistry)
i woulda said bisodium monoxide, no cigar
14:36
No, about a two, for it's in glass (4)
@PolygonPotpourri not to be confused with tetrasexazote monoxide, N24O
@Jafe if that's wrong, I don't want to be right
@Jafe We don't normally give bisodium monoxide with a cigar, but if you really don't want one...
15:15
sounds like something you might not want to inhale

the cigar, i mean

Q: A Cryptic Cryptic "Crossword"

ilikecorgisThis is my first time writing cryptic clues. I think I did a pretty good job of it, but I can't be sure that everything is indicated 100% properly. Sorry in advance. I have 12 five-word cryptic clues, each indicating a five-letter word. Unfortunately, the grid they go in is... not a crossword, to...

Q: Can you win this territory game while going second?

noedneRules Alice and Bob take turns claiming territories on a map. After their first turn, a player may only claim a territory if it borders one they already own. If a player has no moves available, they lose their turn. Once neither player can move, a player wins if they own more territories. Example...
