Q: card(N) != card(N)

JimThe link below connects to a proof with an error in it. Identify the step(s) where the error occurs, and describe why the step(s) is/are wrong. Proof containing error Problem will require knowledge of set theory. I'm not sure this is the correct place to post this; it would have gone into rec.puz...

Requesting close-votes as "mathematics problem not puzzle" here; I would myself but I accidentally chose the "lacking attribution" close reason and only realized the error once I had voted. So I have retracted, but I cannot vote again.

Seems like a fine puzzle to me. It's a puzzle about mathematics, but still could be puzzly enough to stay.

Huh, the impression I got from the comments was that it just required knowing a math thing

the commenters are wrong - that's not the error
they were confused by the notation

I defer to your greater mathematics knowledge

i believe i know what the actual error is, though i don't have the time at the moment to write it up (because i'm doing actual math homework)

I now commented on puzzles from Isaac 3x in a row telling them why I think they need improvement. It 1) doesn't seem to do anything, since the user made another puzzle with the exact same mechanism we criticised and 2) I probably just come off as a hater or something at this point, lol :)

I can't see their most recent posts, but I know what you're talking about. They definitely seem eager to contribute to the site though, so I think it would be good to provide resources for creating good puzzles (I know there's a question about that right here on PSE) as well as examples of good cipher, pattern, etc. puzzles to model off of
(If you've already done that - I can't access PSE rn - then hopefully they'll respond to the feedback and come back with better stuff!)
Also, you can't be a HATER without some HEART :)

Good idea, I linked them to our sequence puzzle guide but to nothing else so far. BTW, if you don't mind me asking, why can't you access PSE? Did your workplace block it?

HTM
@LukasRotter I set the limit myself, PSE is one of my major timewasters currently
Like I would be on the site just mindlessly refreshing and reading my past questions for no good reason
So I've decided that I have to restrict when I can be on here, otherwise I won't be able to get any productive work done

PSE seems to have been discovered by students using www.vedantu.com, an Indian online learning platform. I think the last four questions here are all from there, as are several other recent ones. I expect everyone here in TSL is already well aware, but just in case: When you see people trying to get us to do their homework for them, please don't comply.

Should "no attribution" be prioritized over "duplicate" as a close reason?
As linking to a duplicate does give them an answer

2:17 PM
Oh, that's probably a good thought.
(Though in some cases the duplicate question has itself been closed for want of attribution, without an answer.)

In that case only a mod could close. Us lowly community members can only dupe-close if the dupe target has upvoted or accepted answers.
Should I add an answer about "no attribution > duplicate" to your meta question?
I've ben thinking over a few other answers for a while, including encouraging quicker closing of questions by just telling people to not worry about the consequences of closing (because we can always reopen etc.), and strongly discouraging answers by commenting and/or downvoting (this proposal seems much more potentially disagreeable)

@GarethMcCaughan Should we tell Vedantu about this? I would imagine they don't want their students cheating like this

What could they actually do about it?
I'm not 100% clear whether it's actually their students or whether these questions are something to do with the "V.O.T.E.", the Vedantu Online Talent Exam, which I think is separate. The next V.O.T.E, the last one for the year IIUC, is three days from now, which seems rather soon even if somehow they could do something.

HTM
I think it would be better for them to be aware about this than not, just in case something like this happens again in the future
They don't necessarily have to do anything, they just have to reaffirm that they don't want their questions being shared on the Internet, or that they don't want students cheating on their homework, or whatever policy they want to adopt
I know on Math.SE, whenever there's an active contest, sometimes there will be a call to watch out for questions on that contest
Perhaps we can do something similar here on PSE

6:33 PM
Well, I sent 'em an email.
(We don't have much concrete evidence that all the recent flurry of obvious cheating attempts are on Vedantu questions. But we suspect that's what they are, and we know that some recent obvious cheating attempts are on Vedantu questions.)
