@BeastlyGerbil, whenever you wake up: how far were you before Gareth sniped you?

1 hour later…
2:17 AM
@NorthLæraðr It's a geometric pattern I've been using as a logo for a while now. As for why this particular pattern... 🤔

@GarethMcCaughan, CCCC hint please?

4:28 AM
@Deusovi "it just looks cool"?

do you really think it would be that simple?

Is it going to be a puzzle?

To be posted as a question here? Nah.

then why can't you tell us?

it's not that I can't, just that I don't particularly feel like it

4:35 AM
so you're being mysterious o_O

It seems this is one of the rare moments where I have walked into an ongoing discussion

a very slow-motion one, though

come on deus...

CCCC hint: The first letter is T.

@bobble not that far, had about half the clues and the bottom 6 filled in before the answer was posted :)

Q: 3 switches and 4 lights

Dmitry KamenetskyThe are three switches (1, 2 and 3) and four lights (A, B, C and D). Each switch turns on exactly two lights and no two switches turn on identical lights. You know that Lights A, B and C are on when switches 1 and 2 are down. Lights A, C and D are on when switches 1 and 3 are down. Lights B, C a...

Q: 19 balls and a scale (in a systematic way)

Samo MoYou are given 19 identical-looking balls and a two-sided scale. One of the balls is different, either lighter or heavier than the others. Using 4 weighings of the scale, how can you determine which ball is odd and whether it's lighter or heavier? In a systematic way(using the truth table )

Q: Covid19 puzzle - count of people in a mall

DorniThere is a mall with 4 enterances, in each enterance standing a doorman with a counter who counts the amount of people enterd through that enterance. If the counter reaches 200, the doorman closes the specific enterance, if one person exit this enterance the counter is down to 199 and the enteran...

Q: Z1 = 1, Z2 = 36, Z3, Z4 = 38346, Z5 = 1246285 … Zn, find Z3 and Zn?

ExtrazloveZ1 = 1, Z2 = 36, Z3, Z4 = 38346, Z5 = 1246285 ... Zn, find Z3 and Zn? For info I have already found Zn I just want to compare the results. and if you want more value from this series i can provide it.

I had my first puzzle-related nightmare: that I made some terrible crossword clues. Seriously, that was the entire nightmare.

3:55 PM
sounds horrible

1 hour later…
5:23 PM
@GarethMcCaughan oh, then I'll stop looking for wordplay to match the definition "one of exemplary righteousness" = Deusovi :-)

Q: Unusual connections of numbers

Vassilis ParassidisLets have the equation $(DX)^2-Y^2= ± Z^5$ and $x,y$ two positive integers greater than zero. From these facts we can obtain solutions of the above equation by giving integer values at $x,y$. if $x=11$ and $y=2$ then we have the solution $11*(641)^2-(2122)^2=7^5$ if $x=5$ and $y=2$ then we have ...

Q: Pentominous - Niftily

DeusoviThis is a Pentominous puzzle. Rules of Pentominous: Dissect the grid into regions of 5 cells each. No two regions of the same shape can be adjacent (but they may touch at a corner). Rotations and reflections count as the same shape. Each given letter must correctly label the shape it is in. (An...

A deus puzzle!

It looks very hard :(

@bobble ...it's a Deus puzzle.

it has a nice logical path but it certainly isn't easy

Yh Im struggling to even find the start rn :P

7:23 PM
If I've found the solution path you've intended
(Or at least the start)
Then thats genius and I have no idea how you thought of that

curious to hear what you've found so far

I'll keep going for a little longer and see if its getting me anywhere
But if it leads nowhere then I'll say
this is very fun to play around with though

7:50 PM
@GarethMcCaughan (.tS a ddiK)< Nice clue :-)

Please explain further?

Captain Kidd is a famous pirate
:P

I got the KIDD and A, not sure when the ST came from

"a good man" is a Saint, or st.

Avi
7:53 PM
Kidd = captain, a, good man = saint

That's not an abbreviation I've ever seen. Interesting!

captain = KIDD; a = A; good man = ST. The whole is then "retired" (which for reasons unclear to me is a common indicator for reversal) to yield "one of exemplary righteousness"

You've never seen e.g. St. Patrick's Day?

Sorry, I was typing that while y'all were chatting.

I don't really see it written out.

7:55 PM
"retire" is a synonym for "retreat" or "pull back"

And when I do, I write out "Saint"

@Deusovi true, but it brings to mind moving backward while one's attention is still forward, whereas a reversal of a word is having it turn completely around… I'm probably not making much sense here, but somehow or other I was never really happy with "retired" as a reversal indicator (though I'd certainly use it myself. It's very common)

makes sense!

Offtopic: I've been working though some programming problems, and the free online textbook just had a bunch of the math formulas, and all the pictures, break... grr. It's hard to tell what the problem is now :(

Another reason to have good meaningful alt attribute values.

8:02 PM
There are "helpful" captions such as "A visual explanation of what the algorithm should find" and "Figure: how to determine the [very important term]"

@msh210 Yup! Well done. Glad you liked it.

Thanks.
CCCC: Quaint or rubbish? A throwback: Exeter museum stuff from long ago (10)

8:36 PM
I've done about 60% of the board and am now stuck/gone wrong somewhere
And the more I play around the more convinced I am I have made an error
Yup, time to backtrack

8:59 PM
Wow... I was wrong at all I just didnt see where to go next

do you mean "wasn't wrong at all"?

9:33 PM
Yup, I had the correct answer up until where I got stuck
As there wasn't much left I was trying to bruteforce the solution before seeing what logic could get you there but couldnt find the correct answer

9:57 PM
@BeastlyGerbil Sounds like you were close! You should try to finish it off if you can.

Yeah I have done so now, it helped looking at 'closed' sections and seeing if the total squares were multiple of 5s

yep, a lot of the logic in that puzzle was based off of that type of deduction - it can have some really surprising consequences

I had got to there

ah yep that's the second major sticking point after the break-in

Seemed almost like it was split into two halves: the deduction with the first 'i' and then with the 'l'
Yeah I just couldn't see where to go :)
Very nice puzzle! Some very tricky logic involved
Even if I didn't quite get it, it was very fun to play around with

10:00 PM
Seems like you got it afterwards! (even if you weren't the first to answer)
And thanks, glad you liked it! I have one more Pentominous that I've made - probably will be sharing it sometime tomorrow.

Just about :P Im not sure how I missed the answer when bruteforcing tbh, I thought I'd tried everything

I'm planning to make a crossword themed around a terrible pun. You are warned.

I was trying to find the answer then backtrack to find the logic (I did that a lil with the initial deduction too)
But failed to find the answer so that didnt work either lol
@bobble they probably wont be as bad as the ones I made here. I regret adding them lol
Still thatll be interesting to see, although Im not great at crosswords :P

@bobble looking forward to it!

I also have a puzzle waiting but I'll probs put it out monday

10:04 PM
So far all I have is the pun. Making the crossword around it is the hard part :)

Every puzzle has to start somewhere!

10:20 PM
@bobble Oh dear. Sounds dreadful
@Deusovi Oh I thought you just randomly made a shape and was like "Yeah, that looks like a face"
I assume it's some complex mathematical proof
@bobble That's redundant

@NorthLæraðr I woke up and thought, "Seriously? That's what my subconscious was afraid of?"

@bobble My biggest nightmare for the longest time is being late for school
Hm, oh yeah I had a nightmare last night that I got a 49.5/50 on a presentation I prepared super hard for
Like not even a joke
I ended up getting a 52/50 soooooo
I had another really dumb nightmare the other day relating to some other dumb school-related anxiety

It was extra-strange since this was my first nightmare in forever. I don't think I've had a nightmare since I started high school... and then I have one about writing bad crossword clues and thinking Deus would chew me out.

That is quite terrifying
I've never really been chewed out by Deus but I've seen some vague conversation where Deus had to step in

Specifically Deus. Congratulations Deus, you've now become a literal subject of my nightmares.

10:27 PM
Is it bad to complain that I didn't get a 55/50 on my presentation
I think it is

You're allowed to complain if at least one other person got a 55/50.

Hm, I don't know yet
Okay but that's so true XD
Okay, it's not the score itself, but it's like, I spent like two hours alone practicing just saying the speech (not including all the time it took to write and revise it). I'm just slightly salty I couldn't get a perfect score
I'm pretty sure I missed points for eye-contact
Maybe distracting hand gestures

Don't salt yourself - it would kill you, as a tree

True
Don't want to end up as a pickle

no we don't

10:30 PM
I'm going to add bats and fangs once October starts. I need some good jpeg images

Q: Renegade, epitasis, and then what?

Florian FComplete this finite convoluted sequence of words renegade, epitasis, nihilist, etiolate, gallinae, ...

Okay, the universe is seriously pulling a sick prank on me
My English teacher just send me the scan of the rubric back for my English presentation, and it's "failing to load"
Okay I fixed it
