Q: Open a safe with the safe riddles

AnuragWith the help of you great people, I was able to open my Grandma's box. She really appreciates me and, now, called me last night again to open an another safe. I am afraid guys and need your help again for her. Grandma told me that she was cleaning her backyard and found a safe. She also found a...

How does punctuation work in 4cs?

You can safely ignore punctuation in CCCCs, except when you can't
^ @Wen1now

So punctuation is irrelevant, except when it's not?

@Wen1now exactly!

9:16 AM
@Wen1now did you find this helpful?
If so, give it a star

+1, is that enough?

Interesting question considering the current 4c has no punctuation at all

Um, well...

"The curious case of the comma in the night-time"

9:53 AM
^Is that an actual clue?
Like, an actual cryptic clue?

10:21 AM
No, not at all.
There's a Sherlock Holmes story in which Holmes says something like "I would like to draw your attention to the curious incident of the dog in the night-time", his point being that no dog was heard to bark in the night and in context this is an important observation. It's kinda famous and there's a recent book called "The curious incident of the dog in the night-time" in reference to that. I should have said "incident" rather than "case" in what I wrote above; sorry about that.
(I don't in fact think it is unexpected and significant that there is no punctuation in ffao's clue, though.)

Q: In minesweeper, does every bomb has to have at least one neighboring number?

lonelyassIn a classic Minesweeper game (say, the one from Windows), is this situation possible? This is the bottom-right corner of a board: 1 2 2 2 B B 2 B B I'm specifically asking about the bomb in the bottom-right corner, because it does not have any neighboring numbers.

I just wanna know why they think Puzzling is a great place for their stupid spam accounts. And why, given how we're nuking them before they can do anything useful with them, they continue to bother doing it.

Sid
@Rubio It's quite Puzzling, isn't it? :P

also TIL Puzzling people are bad at cleaning up their obsolete comments

@Mithrandir deleted in 1min 54sec. account nuked not that longer thereafter.
but yes, Puzzling folks are pretty bad about deleting old comments. I think SE in general is pretty bad about it. I really really wish there was a "suggest you delete this" thing that went to the comment poster before going to a mod, cuz I think most people would clean up if someone pointed it out to them, but few people want to pester mods (and few mods want that amount of pestering) over every outdated comment people come across.

obsolete comments aren't a big deal to take care of as a mod, speaking from personal opinion/experience
...took care of 6 'no longer needed' flags in less than a minute today...

2:26 PM
@Mithrandir oh I agree, but I've seen other mods complain about people flagging comments en masse on busier sites where mod workload is higher

Like... Rand complaining when I flagged 50+ comments at once? ;)

Q: Trying to solve Geocaching puzzle

jampez77I'm trying to solve this Geocaching puzzle. NZ NO PE KR AT AT PE AT UK MM SE Hint: Puzzle includes acting The answer to the puzzle should give some GPS coordinates, most likely in the following format: N 54° 59.000' W 001° 35.000' The only thing I can find that looks even somewhat clo...

3:00 PM
This is the third puzzle this guy has posted from geocaches. I don't feel this is kosher and left a comment saying as much, but if anyone has another opinion or a better way to put it, please do jump in.

I felt the same way and was writing up a question on meta about it. It technically doesn't violate the plagiarism or ongoing contest policies, but is very likely against the creator's intent.

I see your point, but to me it's just maybe he shouldn't be doing geocaching puzzle if he's having such a hard time with them?

Sid
^ That

Sid
3:30 PM
I think that's still an okay-ish puzzle.
maybe, they simply like that site..

4:07 PM
as a matter of "policy", those puzzles are fine. they're not passing someone else's stuff off as their own, and are clearly indicating where they came from, and they're not just dumping dozens of mass-produced puzzles on us. Each geocaching puzzle I've seen on the site has been unique in its makeup, despite coming from the same place and (presumably) all having geo coords as solutions.
They're also asking for help with a challenge they've actually encountered, and they make a (rudimentary) attempt to tell us what they've tried/considered already, all of which is appropriate for really any question on any SE site
Also, they wouldn't ask us about ones they have solved - assuming there are any - so it's perhaps unfair to assume they're Just Bad At Geocaching.
Having said all of that .... genre fatigue is a thing. Too many of the same thing gets old, and people start expressing that with downvotes. That's why trends of similar puzzles being posted all together tend to be a self-correcting problem.
Your downvote is your own to do with as you see fit. Ideally it's used to indicate your opinion of the meritworthiness of individual puzzles taken individually. Factually speaking, that doesn't always happen.... and, at least to some extent, that's okay, as long as it doesn't cross the line into outright abusive voting.

@Rubio Noted. Complicating factor: If you click through the source link, it's a puzzle that's been marked for "Premium" members only. What of the intent of the puzzle poster that it remain not open to the public?

tl;dr There's nothing wrong with him posting geocaching puzzles :P

4:40 PM
@feelinferrety We don't often get into issues regarding copyright, which your question largely hinges on (the right of the content creator to control its distribution). Such rights can only be asserted by the content creator, and have to be done via the proper channels; mods may do something where it's a clear-cut case, but we're under no obligation to, and in many cases our best bet is to not intervene.
In this case I don't think it's enough of an issue to be a problem we should address.

Considering I've already gotten "rough" with this user, I don't suppose it would hurt for myself to simply point it out and then leave well enough alone.

@feelinferrety So far your comments seem more like puzzle criticisms (which are fine) than personal/antagonistic criticisms (which would be bad). The question itself doesn't seem to have any glaring problems, and at this point the question's future should be a matter of whether or not it gets a "correct" answer.
@feelinferrety Except for the comment about their post being " discussed among the regulars and was passed off with a questionable "meh"."
That was probably the wrong thing to say, because it has very little to do with the nature of the question
Also, you shouldn't assume that you (or any other TSL regular) can "speak for" the entire general puzzling community, or pass some sort of communal judgment. That's a bit unfair and an overreach.

I meant that it was questioned, and the "being allowed" was a meh.

By whom?

IIRC, Deus asked

4:56 PM
There seems to be a false assumption that the only reason people ask questions on PSE is to gain rep
As I understand it, posting a question of "I found this puzzle-looking thing and I don't know the answer" on PSE is entirely legit

For sure. I was addressing the particular nature of this particular user's trend more so than the act of posting non-OC. I'm sure I could partially attribute my "tirade" to seeing a few select recent users with poor posting habits that refused to listen.

Yes. Those are kind of annoying

Sid
@feelinferrety That....sounds familiar.
but I digress.

@Sid If you have a problem with my Codenames play method, please say so. It is harder to ignore a missive when it is repeated by multiple people in clear non-jest.

Sid
...what?

5:04 PM
I read it as a slight against myself
I'm very good at jumping to conclusions.

Sid
Well, I assure you I never meant it as such.

@feelinferrety I don't see how. You don't spam any "Hey look at my cool riddle or math problem now please give me upvotes" puzzles, and I think Sid was referring to those.

What, pray tell, did you mean, then?

Sid
That ^^
I was about to go to main site and search for something along those lines. Mike put it in words...

Passive aggressiveness is a topic I'm quite buddy-buddy with, and "That sounds familiar, but I digress" is prime real estate for such interpretation. I apologize.

Sid
5:07 PM
Nah, don't apologize. I see your point. Maybe, I should be careful with words...

Yep, tone of voice is really hard to convey without tone of voice

Sid
(I don't like it when someone apologizes to me. It makes me feel that I made a mistake somewhere...)

Uhh, umm.... SHAPE UP, SID!
And on that note, I have an appointment with my psychiatrist to get to :)

@Sid If someone else apologizes, doesn't that usually mean they made a mistake?

@MikeQ Yeah. But, that also means I must have done something due to which they vented their frustrations or whatever on me.

Is it the opposite of Shape-down?

Sid
Anyway, This damn C4...

@Sconibulus "Making a splash" can mean making a positive first impression, eg "And impression well made"

Sid
@MikeQ google tells me it means (a) Become Physically fit(which applies to me) and (b) Behave yourself(which also applies to me, I think)
So.. that's a pretty good advice, I think

@Sconibulus And I'm unsure why you said "Bathing" when "bath" is given - don't you mean splashing water?

5:18 PM
"Shape up" basically means "be better". I meant it as a generic criticism, the opposite of an apology. ;)

Each of those were giving context for the definition of splash used

Oh I see. I thought you were just saying single words that paraphrased/repeated each line of the clue, and was saying to myself "That's odd, Scon usually doesn't do stuff like that"

"Neil"?
@Mithrandir More than just "find out where the answers are coming from", right?

@Deusovi I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to do it, but the 39th clue is essentially the formula. The ingredients are the previous 38 clues.

Woo, drugs!

@MikeQ each one is self contained, I just give you the answer and you create the puzzle - it's just the final answer that matters

@Mithrandir I strongly recommend not entrusting me with that scope

@stacksfiller how do you ever know how to pronounce words? That's a much worse guess fest imo

@feelinferrety What on earth is that?
Wait, definitely a Cipher, yeah. :P

It's a song about apples and bananas by one of this country's best-ever kids' song composers

what was the 24h hint?

an uncommon abbreviation was used

Sid
ffao probably means the Guardian. They are a different beast.

I was thinking it's something along these lines: thoughtco.com/key-copyediting-terms-1692372

Idea for (next) FTC: Cryptic non-Crosswords

Maybe. We've seen a lot of puzzles involving cryptic clues, though - I don't think that's a topic we need to particularly encourage.
(Not that I'm opposed to more cryptic clues, of course.)

Cryptic chess? Cryptic sudoku?
Cryptic... geometry puzzles?

Sid
6:55 PM
We have had Cryptic Rebuses already.
Cryptic Sudoku sounds dangerous and scary. :P

Cryptic number sequences

Cryptic chess? :)
I want to see how that one works out

Cryptic... connect-the-dots?

6:58 PM
@feelinferrety I said allowed...
I might give what it is as a next hint

@ffao well 'scuuuuuse me.

Though it would be a fairly big one

IIRC, you also said that was your "naughty" of the round, so it wouldn't hurt to reveal ;)
@MikeQ Wouldn't that just be cryptic number sequences, or would it lack numbers altogether?

@feelinferrety Now that you mention it, I had considered a super-puzzle that consists of really, really bad puzzles
Such as a connect-the-dots with 100 unlabeled points

I have a better idea
But don't want to say XD
Unless someone were to desire a team-up

7:08 PM
There was also the idea of a crossword, except all numbers and letters were put through a substitution cipher

that crossword wouldn't be terrible, to be honest
I mean, it wouldn't be great, but it would be reducible to a normal crossword

I would love to help formulate the Terrible Metapuzzle

Wouldn't be any worse than a minesweeper crossword :P

Sid
(As long as it's not Vigenere encoded with random numbers)

No no, it was a straightforward 36-symbol substitution cipher, with the obvious starting point of using the hint "numbers" on the grid

7:10 PM
I think there was a rotten crossword where the answers were rot-n'd and then shifted n to get different words

@Sconibulus Ewww/cool

@feelinferrety There is also the number sequence "1 2 3 4 ? 6 7"

A: The Rotated Crossword

SconibulusThe basic idea of the puzzle is to An example is here: My solving so far has brought me to here:

Fine, fine
48h-and-an-hour hint: the abbreviation is of "member"

I want to share my most recent music obsession

7:15 PM
@feelinferrety However yes I will accept ideas. If I actually make this, I intended to deliver it by a certain date in December, possibly in the style of an advent calendar

Advent calendar of terrible puzzles? <3
Hah, ninja'd mindreader

Yes, except all given at once

All CCCC hints recap: I used an uncommon abbreviation for the word "member"; the sixth letter is C

You should give more frequent but less helpful clues, like "The third letter is the same as the fifth letter of what I had for breakfast yesterday"

I've now decided that this question is too broad - anyone else want to vote to close? puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/55039/…

Sid
7:20 PM
@Mithrandir I am not. I am getting cheap rep. :P
Though, I still think my answer makes the most sense.
But, then, literally all lateral-thinking puzzles are too-broad.

Yep.
Oh cool, I'll be the 4th person ever on Puzzling.SE to earn the Marshal badge! :D

It's broad but not too broad

I only have like 50 helpful flags

I'm sure there are lots of answers that could work if given sufficiently creative explanations, but I doubt any will make more sense than Sid's answer

My rate goes down a lot once I earn VtC

7:26 PM
You almost got it right Mike: the third letter is the same as the fourth letter of what I had for breakfast

@Mithrandir The "right = political right" approach is creative but would require making the extra assumption that the phrase "to the right of" can have inconsistent meaning

@MikeQ It's lateral thinking, that assumption is almost a given

No, I mean, inconsistent within the puzzle itself
As in, sometimes "X is to the right of Y" refers to physical location, and sometimes "X is to the right of Y" refers to political alignment, with no distinction of when it should mean one and not the other, even if they are in the same immediate context

From what I've seen that's perfectly acceptable within lateral thinking puzzles...

Acceptable, probably
I'm just going by Occam's Creative Razor - The best solution to a lateral thinking puzzle tends to have the fewest necessary assumptions

7:35 PM
TBH I'd be in favor of closing all as too broad and doing away with the tag.

Likewise.

So an answer like "These people were in a line on Monday, but now it's Tuesday so Bill is to the right of John" requires a lot of assumptions that I made up
Whereas Sid's answer is probably best because it requires no assumptions

IME lateral thinking puzzles will often clue two different meanings of a word at the same time.
The political thing was also the first thing I thought of when I saw the puzzle and couldn't pass it up :P

hmm, Member in a slightly weird abbreviation might be MP?
lateral thinking puzzles are usually self-consistent I think

I'm not entirely sure of that and it's not a strongly held view.
But we avoid all problems by banning questions ;)
Maybe it's time to bring that up on meta (again?).

7:43 PM
Ah well. I'll cease the complaints then.
If anyone actually wanted to read the nonsensical ramblings of a grumpy southerner, there are more entertaining venues for that

I would be opposed to that, I think good lateral-thinking can exist

Depends what you qualify as "lateral thinking"

@MikeQ complaints, if constructive, are helpful. Yours were constructive, I think.

Sid
I would also like to hear @Rand's views on that. He is quite articulate in these matters

I think lateral-thinking puzzles that are not too broad can exist.
I wouldn't use the word "good" for them.

7:46 PM
They can. They just generally don't.

It's possible that one answer will stick out above the rest. But 95% of the time, it doesn't, and when it does, it's often not by much.

Note to self: Don't make next puzzle a lateral-thinking question

Sid
Speaking of Political leanings, what is the difference between, say, right-wing and far-right?

Right-wing is a broader term, and far-right means "very right-wing, possibly with some extreme tenets"

yeah, far-right implies extremism, whereas right-wing doesn't

7:55 PM
right-wing = the correct wing, whereas far-right = far correctly :P

basically, if there was a 9 point political scale, we might call right-wing 7,8,9; but far-right would only be 9

Why 9 point?

I dunno, it seemed like 10, but has a center

As in, 1-3 = left wing, 4-6 = middle, 7-9 = right wing

That seems like an odd number to choose (not trying for the obvious pun just can't think of another word for odd at the moment)

7:56 PM
and 6 would be "centrist, with right-leaning views"

yeah, 6-7 might be called center-right

It's an oversimplified model of a political spectrum, but I think most people use it anyway

in America, at least

Yep. And depending on one's source of American political news, it may be easy to assume that "far right" and "right wing" are interchangeable
(Not trying to make a political statement, just pointing out the nuance)

the polarizing of American politics is weird
it's not impossible to believe in a conservative fiscal policy and at the same time think climate change exists
but by looking at internet discussions it seems like many people take the whole wing ideology as a package

8:05 PM
well, two-party system combined with first past the post effectively means that no new parties can form

Well, Britain has first past the post as well, and they've had more than two parties
I think a large part of the issue is that our campaigns last three years, so nobody new has any money to compete
well, I guess it's only presidential campaigns that last that long, and Britain doesn't have those to compare to...
@ffao I think this is in large part because of news consumption

@ffao Yeah it's a weird "team mentality" that goes around. Certainly not universal, but it is surprisingly widespread.

If the place that is talking about candidates you like in ways you like is also pointing out every methodological flaw in a study like it's uncovering a conspiracy theory, and never discussing that or similar studies in any other way, it seems easy to become skeptical

Anyone up for a game?
I'll try not to fall asleep in the middle this time :D

so, for the important questions
was your scroll a parallax, Mith? :P

This actually happens on both sides, but there are more people that only consume Fox News and Breitbart than those that only consume MSNBC and HuffPo
so that side comes out significantly louder and more monolithic

I try to visit all news sites; I think dismissing X news because it came from Y source is detrimental unless Y source is known to outright fabricate facts

@ffao Yes.

why do you think there aren't a lot of people that only consume MSNBC and HuffPo?
I think the team mentality goes both ways

 Contact

For playing the game Contact, where one person tries to "defend"...
...not what I meant to paste but that works too...

@ffao I remember finding a study based on reported news sources, let me see if I can find it again

I personally claim no named stance because I do not know what the associated party beliefs are in any category except social platforms

There's also the regional concentration factor. It's a geographically large country, with the larger communities are sort of clumped together

I don't follow politics or policy until it starts infringing on human rights, which is taking quite enough of my attention/energy these days

and so certain regions of the US are nearly politically homogenous

@feelinferrety this seems like an important category. Is any party planning to ban social platforms?

@ffao Moreso "trying to plan" than actually planning. Too much party infighting.

8:18 PM
@ffao Were I to focus entirely on that aspect, I could claim far left status. Not knowing what the hell the other boxes to check are, though, I cannot do that.
Statistically speaking, being "blue" in a major city north of the Mason-Dixon line is a foregone conclusion

Blasted yankee
Don't take your "logic" and "critical thinking" for granted

As I said, I'm no Democrat. I'm a Humanist.

I think this is the article I recall finding, based on social media sharing

If I had a dollar for every time I said something like "But you're not a climatologist, why is this an opinion issue for you"

8:28 PM
well, moving to contact

1 hour later…
9:40 PM
MELANCHOLY is M(ember) + C inside ELAN+HOLY

thanks Rubio

Unworldly enthusiasm indeed.

as to why I pinged @Sp3000 after the clue: due to my love of follow ups, the member in question is the title character of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

"enthusiasm of unworldly sort" might've worked

who is kept enthusiastic by the other characters, because if she gets melancholic Bad Things happen

9:44 PM
Ahhhh. Hehehe

"enthusiasm of unworldly sort" might have worked, that is true

10:07 PM
@ffao Thought that was the reason, but for some reason melancholy as a potential def didn't cross my mind :P (apt follow-up though!)

10:34 PM
too easy I suspect, but I can't resist.
CCCC: Unworldly enthusiasm (6)

haha
Rubio, do we still have to follow any specific procedure to add lines to the bottom of the CCCC archive?

no
You should just be able to click the "Add ... " button and it should auto-generate what's needed

This looks like either a very loose ddef or some wordplay I'm just not seeing

SPIRIT (double def)
@Rubio?

indeed.

10:49 PM
Isn't unworldly an adjective?

I actually knew what the solution was immediately from looking at synonym lists for both holy and elan when building my own

so is spirit, as in spirit realm

but I wanted someone else's name on the C4 pin for a bit

I thought "spirit realm" is that grammatical structure where "A B" (both are nouns) means "B of A"

@ffao yeah I expected it to be solved literally instantly :)
