<ground + e - o> = GERUND, which "measuring" is...
i know -- it's not right
doesn't really make sense there

4 hours later…
6:21 AM
@stacksfiller Why so pessimistic? It's the correct answer!
(The idea was that the E breaks GROUND, so goes into it, and then the O is removed.)

6:36 AM
So a word split, [wordplay] in [definition] and an unindicated definition by example all in one? :p
It was solvable, I guess

Now, now, your honour! The definition is "measuring?" and definition by example is indicated by the question mark. I think "measuring" is actually a gerund, i.e. noun in the sentence. And wordplay and def are clearly separated. That leaves the need to split groundbreaking. I considered to write ground-breaking, but decided to leave it as is and then hint at it if needed.

6:56 AM
Haha, the groundbreaking split was fairly clear
Not a fan of "measuring?" as a definition, but the rest was easy enough that it worked

Not so happy with the def either, but I wanted it to work with the experiment surface and all variants of "say", "perhaps" and so on didn't really sound natural.

@humn I don't know why I didn't get the ping. :/

You weren't pingable.

I missed you too but I am accompanied by some things these days. I'll try to be here more often.
oh. does that happen?
never knew

If you haven't been in the room for a certain amount of time, you don't get notified from an @ping anymore.

I used to visit the room sometimes but never sent a message.

I think I'm trying to add too many constraints to this puzzle I'm making

So, Baffle is an anagram indicator?
but then is "the right high card" the definition?

It could just be "high card" and "without the right" being a deletion indicator?

i figured "starting without" indicated removing the first letter of baffle/ first letter of the anagram

If only harpists used bows (and there wasn't baffle)

@Aranlyde explain

10:41 PM
I'm just stuck on BOWER being the answerr (from my Euchre days at college) and I'm trying to make anything fit it

I still play euchre
But we never use the term bower, just right and left

I'm no longer in the Midwest

lol

Yeah so "the right high card" could be bower

why is the right high card bower

10:43 PM
Euchre
the high cards are known as the right and the left
apparently bower too

The right and left bowers are the two highest cards in Euchre

is it possible baffle is the definition?

"The right high card" is such a weird def that I'm stuck on it
Then it would just be a deletion?

10:46 PM
i'm thinking without the right high card could be -j or -a
(that is, taking out those letters from the rest of the word)
baffle def

high cards : jack queen king ace deuce
only two have 5 letters

baffle could be stump

how come that isn't on wikisaurus!!!!

yeah
what's a godo synonym for starting

TRUMP could also be a high card

but what is sharper?

uh
oh right
> A sharper is an older term, common since the seventeenth-century, for thieves who use trickery to part an owner with his or her money possessions.
something to keep in mind

baffle could be an anagrind

mentioned that...

sorry didn't see it

wordplays.com/crossword-solver is better for finding random words that fit defs then wikithesaurus :P

anyway, indirect anagrams are frowned upon

There are no indirect anagrams in the wordplay.

how is it indirect

@apep can i guess stump?

baffle is an anagrind
@DestructibleLemon you need reasoning typically

@thecoder16 no, the word to anagram is indirect

10:56 PM
btw i came up with stump :P

uh, st = starting without the right ump = right of trump/highcard
plus stump = confuse
oh wait i forgot sharper again

that almost works

but you used right twice

anyway i sort of had some reasoning?

10:57 PM
which also is probably frowned upon

@thecoder16 yeah it probably is

sharper is weird because it is a comparitve
comparitive*

i've mentioned it could be a noun
A sharper is an older term, common since the seventeenth-century, for thieves who use trickery to part an owner with his or her money possessions. Sharpers vary from what are now known as con-men by virtue of the simplicity of their cons, which often were impromptu, rather than carefully orchestrated, though those certainly happened as well. The 1737 Dictionary of Thieving Slang defines a sharper as "A Cheat, One who lives by his wits." In the nineteenth century, and into today, the term is more closely associated with gambling. Sharpers were romantic figures in the eighteenth-century, valued as...

It's the start of SHARPER + TRUMP - R (right) = STUMP

@stacksfiller correct

y know we forgot the first rule of C4s

this really should have been more obvious to me

except for the right = r tbh
but whatever

R is right

i guess i haven't seen many abbreviations

@stacksfiller easy one plz

i'll claim partial credit also for saying STUMP :P

y'know, the clue looks like it has no surface but when you consider sharper ~= card cheat

it's a troll though

I guess it depends on how valid it is

oh it's valid
just bad

(not my turn to post c4 btw)

If it's kinda valid then I guess maybe save it for a 4C?

just don't post it as a c4 until you get a c4

11:09 PM
no because it's painful

I have a pretty good idea for cccc but I'm not super 100% sure it's valid

it's just 19 words that you have to separate

like 99% or something

into groups that make sense

I'm terrible at coming up with them but here goes

here comes my chance at finally getting a cccc

i almost had MOSQUITO but messed up the wordplay a few weeks ago

CCCC: Burn the last of them in a box (7)

uh.....
i'm terrible at ccccs. i forgot how bad i was though

And after I post it I think of better wording

uh you can still modify it

11:11 PM
you can change

^

that's not a rule violation

i feel like this is one of those where it's so obvious when sol is revealed you feel really dumb

Depluralized

11:12 PM
oh it's 7
i thought it was 5 lol

It was 8 but it's now 7

could it possible be S(M)OLDER?

Q: Drawing balls from a pocket

MantoI have a pocket of N=4 balls of different colors, say green, red, blue and yellow. You can draw as many times as you want After each draw, the ball will be put back to the pocket so that the chance of drawing each ball is always equal You need to pre-determine how many times you want to draw ...

smodler?
what

Do you mean SMOULDER?

11:13 PM
that's 8 letters

That's the point...

Oh both are accpetable

@Aranlyde

11:14 PM
It's not

Sorry. wikipedia and google give 'smoulder' as correct and 'smolder' as an alternative

lol in the US i've always seen smolder

American vs British spelling I'm sure

yep

is it possible for a word to be a verb even if it's a noun incontext?

11:16 PM
Sorry I'm terrible at making cryptic clues :(

them
i totally knew that

11:17 PM
cremate
I thought of that
but i couldn't figure out how that related

my first C4 life goal accomplished
CR(EM)ATE

like burn, but what about the rest of it

last two of them in CRATE

The original was CREMATES, but it works better as a singlular

nice
if it specifically said last two i would have had my first chance to make a cccc maybe
alright then thecoder16, you win this round

11:19 PM
:(
Let's just all make a few cryptics just to keep this fast if it's ever our turn

@thecoder16 this is why you're supposed to write the logic of an answer grrr
@thecoder16 didn't you say you already made one?

CCCC: Ten years before last, David's first gallery goes without area, first of reviews mixed. (6)

i tried really hard to make this sentence somewhat make sense
i kinda failed

I can't figure out the logic but i know the answer probably

yeah lol

yuuuup

who is david

you may never know

probably doesn't matter besides the fact he's got a D

i think we've taken this far enough

where is the c

but that was going to be a hint if i ever needed one

D[avid] [befor]E [ar]CADE?

reviews?

so, [without (area=A, first of reviews=R)]

the 'without' applies everything after it except 'mixed'

ok abbreviations messing me up again too
@Wen1now are you coming up with one or fine tuning one you thought of a bit earlier?

Has that been confirmed?

uh
it seems like decade was obvious, plus your logic making enough sense
@thecoder16 confirm or deny please
@thecoder16 please confirm the reasoning in Wen1nows answer is correct?
do you just want to assume you got it right? @Wen1now?

it's 4 words
one is a definite article

I was going to say these are usually ddefs

Um... I won't confirm/deny unless the wordplay is explained

do i really need to explain?

that sounds like something my 5 year old would say
