Q: Fortnightly Topic Challenge #25: Wordplay

RottersSlaveThis is the twenty-fifth instalment of the Fortnightly Topic Challenge described here, with topics suggested and voted on here. This fortnight's topic is wordplay(suggested by Beastly Gerbil), and will span from the the 23rd of January to the 5th of February. During this period, we will compile t...

Their taster puzzles are all rather enigmatic (though I have solved one of them and none seems obviously un-attackable).

user61230
@LukasRotter To be slightly more helpful, I think you should ask on meta. Fortnightly challenges are for everyone; it sort of depends on where the people who read the topic challenges want to see those stats.

user61230
I'm not sure where the best place for that would be, though I think there is a place for it

@Volatility Thanks! I looked at it a while ago and the taster puzzles were... very questionable in terms of quality.

That seems like a straight line for a "Your mom" joke. But I'm far too classy to take advantage of it.
(Which, in turn, seems like yet another straight line ...)

@Sphinx Too broad?

@Deusovi I think so.
I think that's an interesting exercise in trial-and-error

5:03 AM
Wow, @Deusovi, I just can't seem to fool you very long with weekend puzzles nowadays. You saw right through the Roman obfuscation, which revealed a surprisingly skewed result, even compared to Arabic numbers.

A: There oughta be a law without words

DeusoviThis is It can sometimes be applied

(just a type-by, no need to reply)

5:18 AM
@humn I think it was mostly from your hinting at "law". (However, I'm not sure what those expression at the top equal to -9, -99, -999... are doing.)

@Deusovi 1 to 9.999999999999, 10 to 99.999999999999999999999999999, 100 to 999.99999999999999999999999 etc (random numbers of 9's in this comment indicate infinite numbers of 9s)

...Oh, they're ranges. Duh.
(That being said, 9.99999... is exactly equal to 10. A half-open interval would be best for this purpose.)

Right, and the .9999... is about how Romans always rounded down ( I think).

Hm? They did?

Their apparently-crazy system of fractions makes me think so.

5:22 AM
Oh, I'm not familiar with Roman fractions.

But their system of integers seems more crazy than it really is too.
I only looked it up briefly when composing this thing, and it seems they have specific names for each fraction.
Like "sesqui" for 3/2

Whoa. Weiiird.

But Roman numbers get dismissed a lot, so i wouldn't be surprised if there's more to the story.
My favorite example is division.
It works just as efficiently with Roman numbers as with decimals after all, but sure is easy to make fun of without actually trying it.
(and yes, going with .9999... was also a clue) (and, yes, that the ranges look like subtraction bugged me too)

@humn Well we have "one and a half", which is not much better than "and a half", which sesqui is apparently derived from

hm, yeah.
I wonder if 3/4 is sesquisemid
turns out to be "dodrantem"
" Quartoseptcentennial – broken down as quarto– (¼) x sept– (7) centennial (100 years) = 175 years."
good times in ancient Rome!

@humn This is the reason why, when someone states: "It will only take a fraction of the time", I always ponder to myself: "But what if it's an improper fraction?"

Are you saying that it could be a loooong time or that you don't mind impropriety?
Also, @K_K, did I miss it or did that last picture ever complete? (Was it the reverse view of the room and we saw it partially completed?)

(and i was just going to slink away quietly) . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (shhh, @)humnlikethis..:p

I'm going to fail my classes
but I will earn $128k (approx. depending on btc prices) in 6 months

That sounds like ... probably good news on balance.
Will you be earning another $128k in the subsequent 6 months?

@GarethMcCaughan No, I can earn another $128k in 20 days after that

"approx depending on btc prices" means "probably to within a factor of 10 or so either way", right?

3:11 PM
@GarethMcCaughan not sure what you mean

Gosh. I hereby request that after 6 months, and then after a further 20 days, you report back and let us know whether that much money did indeed come your way.
(I mean that the exchange rate between BTC and anything else is notoriously volatile.)

@GarethMcCaughan Just as soon as I figure out how to pay taxes on it

(Probably not really uncertain by a factor of 10, but who knows?)

@GarethMcCaughan ah, yeah. I reckon it'll go up, though, so maybe more than $128k
In fact, I did my calculations when the btc price was around $871, it's now $926

So is there a connection between failing your classes and making large sums of money in some so-far-unspecified bitcoin-related way? E.g., did you spend what "should" have been study time setting up a business that happens to get paid in bitcoin?

3:14 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Not particularly. I did this during my breaks
And it's rather easy to keep up with, just need to check on it every 10 days

Would you care to tell us anything about what it is? (I can think of a number of reasons why the answer might be no...)

@GarethMcCaughan No to what? And which reasons?

No to "would you care to tell us anything about what it is?". Some possible reasons: (1) you just don't feel like sharing such details about your life here; (2) it's something others could copy and you don't want to encourage that; (3) it's illegal; (4) it's legal but widely disapproved of (e.g., pornography).

@GarethMcCaughan Ah. (1) I'm comfortable with most parts (2) Not sure why I wouldn't want others to make money :P (3) Bitcoins are one thing that I stay legal in (4) It's fairly common
Basically it's an investment service
I put in a certain amount of btc, I earn %10 of that every day
I re-invest every 10 days
There are also 4 different investing options, I believe, each with a higher rate
so that $128k figure is low

the point with #2 is that e.g. if you had found some interesting regularity in BTC behaviour that let you make money by trading, then you might not want others to know about it because the way markets work is that every trade tends to push prices in a way that makes the trade less attractive, so that if some exploitable regularity is found then it goes away as it gets exploited.
I do not believe there is anything out there that really truly gives returns of 10% per day. If someone is claiming that, then I am 99.99% confident that you are getting scammed.
(or did I misunderstand?)

3:23 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Ah, yeah.
@GarethMcCaughan I've collected from it once already

Are you really collecting, if you're re-investing every 10 days? All it takes is someone to shut it down at day 9 of a cycle....

Bernie Madoff's customers collected from him quite a lot of times. Until, suddenly, they didn't any more and all their money was gone.

@Khale_Kitha I mean I've withdrawn into my wallet once already

Old card sharp's technique: You let your victim win some games at relatively low stakes, wait until they have learned that they're making money from you and are willing to play for much higher stakes ... and then you take all their money.

3:26 PM
@GarethMcCaughan Fair point. If I stop getting my money, though, it's not that big of a deal, though, as I started out investing only $2 into it, and haven't put into it anything else that I didn't earn from it

We're not trying to be negative - just making sure you're not digging in =D

There is a famous hedge fund called Renaissance Technologies. It's stuffed with terrifyingly clever people. It is famous for the incredibly impressive returns its "Medallion Fund" has had over several years. It has averaged about 70% returns per year.
10% returns per day would be an annual return of approximately 10^15.
To put it differently, you could put in a dollar, wait a year, and have more than the entire world economy.
Unless I have very badly misunderstood what you've said, there is no way this is real.

@GarethMcCaughan Whether or not it turns out to be a scam is not a worry to me
I've already gotten back my 0.002 btc
So I've lost nothing

actually, wait, it's not really 10% per day, it's 100% per 10 days, so your return after a year would "only" be about $10B :-). (I'm a little puzzled because I'm still coming up with a 6-monthly figure that's bigger than the one you mentioned.)

@GarethMcCaughan Is there a difference between 10% a day and 100% per 10 days?

3:35 PM
Yes

That's certainly the right attitude. Just a couple more words of advice, then. (1) They may try to encourage you to put more of your own money in. Do not do that. You will probably lose that money. (2) If they're delivering genuine returns for a while, perhaps you can actually make money from them by pulling out at a well chosen time. (3) Be very very wary; they may have found a way to extract more money from you than you think. (E.g., if somehow you give them your bank details or something.)
And yes: if you get 10% per day and can reinvest it every day then after 10 days you have 1.1 times 1.1 times ... times 1.1, which is about 2.6x. Whereas 100% per 10 days means you "only" double your money every 10 days.
Neither of which, just to recap, is in any way the sort of return anything in the real world that isn't fraudulent can possibly deliver except by extraordinary good luck.

@GarethMcCaughan The only thing I have given them is a name (pseudonym I use), my email address, and my bitcoin address. And trust me, I understand how this works. I've been scammed before (lost 14 cents :( )
@GarethMcCaughan I can reinvest every day

Sid
Good morning/afternoon/evening all..

I could also withdraw every day if I wanted to

1.00 * 1.1 = 1.1
1.1 * 1.1 = 1.21
1.21 * 1.1 = 1.331
...etc
1.46, 1.61, 1.77, 1.95, 2.14, 2.36, 2.59, 2.85 (10 days)

1.00 * 2.00 = 2.0 (10 days)

3:38 PM
@Sid just use ugt

Just so you can see the difference, for info, btw

Incidentally, I give very high probability to either #1 or #3 being the case. This is definitely a scam; the people running it are definitely aiming to make money out of you; unless they truly have an astonishing money-creating machine (in which case, why share it with the likes of you?) they can't do much of that just by taking your 0.002 BTC, unless they have an implausibly large number of victims; so they will (try to) do it some other way.

Sid
People are talking about scams!! My favourite subject.

@Khale_Kitha 2.85 is 11 days.

I wasn't including day 0

3:40 PM
@Khale_Kitha I'm not sure I understand, but never mind.

Clearer
But yeah - either way - heh

I'm confused about how you guys are doing your math. I put in 0.002 bitcoins.
I earned 0.0002 bitcoins every day for 10 days, leaving me with 0.002 btc deposited and 0.002 in my account. I then withdrew. Some days later, I invested 0.0025 btc directly from my account. I'm currently earning 0.00045 btc per day
Unless I'm just really bad at math

@TrojanByAccident Forgive me if this is excessively plain speaking, but: You originally said "I will earn $128k in 6 months" (rather than e.g. "there is a tiny chance that I might earn $128k in 6 months") and that means that you do not understand every aspect of how this works :-). But if all you mean is that you understand what you need to do to avoid having money stolen from your actual bank account, fair enough.
What conflict do you see between your description of what you did and what you're getting and what we said?

@GarethMcCaughan I do understand. :P
@GarethMcCaughan brb, let me go check my math
First of all, if I deposit $1.00's worth, I earn 0.10 worth every day
meaning after a year, I've earned $36.5

Sid
Wait, you earn 10% of your deposit or your balance?

3:45 PM
@Sid deposit

Sid
You mean, like Simple Interest thingy?

@Sid Yes.

Suppose you always reinvest your "earnings". Then you start off depositing $1. Next day, you have $0.10 more, and put that in too, so now you have $1.10. Next day, you have $0.11 more, and put that in; now you have $1.21. Your money grows a lot faster this way than if you just leave the $1 in there and take your 10% every day. (Which, just let me remind you, you will not actually get for long :-).)

He's actually getting less than that, Gareth - interest on base principal only - non-aggregate

yeah, but he explicitly said he could reinvest

3:48 PM
@GarethMcCaughan That requires effort
and 60 seconds of time every day

Wow, 60 seconds of effort is just too much work for exponential returns.

If this thing were real, reinvesting every day rather than every 10 days would mean getting 2.6x per 10 days instead of 2x every 10 days, or about 14,000x more over the course of a year.

i mean, exponential returns are overrated.
(sarcasm)
But I'm with everyone else on this, this is a scam.

@GarethMcCaughan I'm actually getting 1x return in 10 days?

No. You put 1 dollar in, you got 2 dollars out.
thats 2x return.
saying its 1x return is terrible for calculations.

3:51 PM
@TheGreatEscaper You put 1 dollar in. In 10 days, you get 1 dollar out.

plus your original dollar.
which is two dollars.

@TheGreatEscaper You can't extract that

It's still part of the consideration. What you're "saying" is not real

the trouble is that we talk about, say, 10% returns meaning 1.1x increase, so 100% returns means 2x increase and it's not clear what "1x return" should mean :-). So long as you're consistent in your terminology, it'll be OK.

If I put in 1 dollar and got 1 dollar, in the end, I'd have 0% return

3:52 PM
Either way, Trojans way of looking at it = bad calculations

@GarethMcCaughan 100% ROI is getting exactly what you put in

100% ROI is getting a profit of exactly what you put in.

^
Profit / Cost (* 100)

@GarethMcCaughan That's not what I was taught e.e

The "return" is a calculation of your profit

3:54 PM
Trojan I know majority rules is not always correct

apologies for using incorrect terminology, then

But, again, the terminology doesn't matter; let's just be explicit about what we mean. They are claiming that you put in $x and get out $x/10 every day, and that you can reinvest what you get out. (Right?)

@GarethMcCaughan correct.

Can I put this a different way. If this system is legitimate, a: why would anyone want to share it, especially to online strangers, b: why does such a system exist in the first place (do you know WHAT they are doing to get these returns?),

If you can do that, then (1) if you reinvest all your takings every 10 days then your account grows by 2x every 10 days, and (2) if you reinvest all your takings every day then your account grows by 2.6x every 10 days, and (3) over a year you will have about 14000x more if you do #2 rather than #1.
But, again, you are not actually going to get that money.

3:57 PM
Essentially you're using a magic money machine. Magic money machines don't exist.
and if one did, the owner most certainly would NOT be sharing it.

@TheGreatEscaper I honestly don't care what they're doing

Why have you bought into this system anyway

@GarethMcCaughan My account gets back to what I originally had in 10 days. My deposit != My account
@TheGreatEscaper Because I can

I wasn't around in chat at the time, but what's the context for this?

Somehow making $128k in 6 months

3:59 PM
The point isn't that you should care what they're doing; it's that asking the question "what could they be doing to produce these results?" leads to insight (in this case, the answer "it's not possible"). Just as if someone claims they've got a perpetual motion machine, it's reasonable to ask a similar question and arrive at a similar conclusion.

I may have the wrong number..

it was $128k

@Khale_Kitha $128k
ninja'd

Regardless.

The maths doesnt matter
its distracting from the point

3:59 PM
@GarethMcCaughan they may be misguided in their sense of perpetuality

which is that this is not real.

@TrojanByAccident I understand that they distinguish between deposit and account; my apologies for saying "account" when apparently I should have said "deposit"

Sid
This is an almost certain scam. I mean, why would anyone in their right mind give 10% return to online strangers unless they are the greatest humanitarian on this planet(probability->0)? There is no way anyone is doing this for real.

@TheGreatEscaper My point is that whether or not it's a scam is irrelevant
I've already gotten back what I put in

No, it's very relevant for your future.
if you've gotten back what you put in, stop now.

4:00 PM
@TheGreatEscaper Please explain the logic in that

He's using different terminology again, TGE - he's saying he's earned a profit of what he's put in

But wasn't the deposit irretrievable?

Whether or not it's a scam is relevant for two reasons. (1) If it weren't a scam, you would have some prospect of hundreds of thousands of dollars' gain in the future. Since it's a scam, you don't. That should make a difference to your plans. (2) If it weren't a scam, and they said "here, you can put some more of your own money in and get the same enormous returns on it" then you should. Since it's a scam, you shouldn't, because if you do that you are probably never seeing that money again.
(3) If it weren't a scam, you could reasonably hope that any other information they might ask you to provide would be used honestly. Since it's a scam, most likely if they ask you for more information it's because they have some way of using it to steal from you or fool other people or something.

@GarethMcCaughan But I'm not going to put any more of my own money in

4:02 PM
Only what they return

But if it weren't a scam, if they genuinely had a machine that turns a dollar into 1.1 dollars every day, then you should put more of your own money in. (But don't!)

@GarethMcCaughan The only thing they ask for is a name, an email address, and a btc wallet

Its midnight, I'm heading off. @Trojan I'm willing to bet my bank account details that there's something dodgy going on here.

night

@TheGreatEscaper Be careful what you bet ;)

4:03 PM
Same goes to you, my friend.

@TrojanByAccident That's all they've asked for so far. I'm saying: if at some point they say "oh, we've got this thing we need to do, and we need a little more info from you" ... well, you know what's going on :-).

@GarethMcCaughan indeed. I'm not that stupid

Sid
@GarethMcCaughan That's an old-school trick. I don't think people fall for that anymore.

Actually, before I head off, I'd still like to know the context for this.
Whered you hear about this?

Oh, they do. But probably mostly people much stupider than TBA.

There are far new methods of duping people. I have experienced one myself.

We like to think we are clever people. There are people cleverer than us. Some like to use their intellect for nefarious purposes

Okay maybe that was a bit cynically phrased
but you get the idea

A bit of googling suggests maybe the thing discussed here: bitcoinblackhat.com/showthread.php?tid=4026 (but I am not a member of that forum and haven't seen what the links are, and in fact I have viewed it only via the Google cache)

Sid
4:08 PM
@TheGreatEscaper That is practically phrased.

Thanks Sid. I'm off now. Gnight all!

@TrojanByAccident Why are you confident that the system will give you "at least a little money"?

@GarethMcCaughan Because If I withdraw my account's balance right now, I will have earned "a little money"

OK. How do you know that they will actually give you that money?

@GarethMcCaughan Also, I can't confirm or deny what that is referring to, but the thread does not exist except in the cache, and the amount is wrong for the one I use
@GarethMcCaughan I'll withdraw right now to check, if you like

OK, so probably not that one. Curious for there to be two such similar things doing the rounds.
@TrojanByAccident It was a question rather than a challenge.

Yeah, this sounds incredibly sketchy.

I mean, these people are claiming something that literally cannot be true; there is nothing in the world that genuinely returns a reliable 10% per day. Since that's their headline claim, we know that they are making definitely-untrue claims about what they do. Why trust anything else they say?

@GarethMcCaughan In all honesty, I don't. However, this is really my choice. I am choosing to trust it, at least partially.

Ah, now that's different. Your choices are your choices, and the rest of us neither can nor should dictate those.
But we can warn you that this sort of thing has been around in various different guises for a long time, that 100% of such cases have been scams, and that they're exploiting the way human brains work to encourage their customers to "choose to trust" them. If you're happy with that, well, it's up to you. But it's a dangerous road to go down.

^
You said that better than I ever could.

4:16 PM
Because another thing history shows is that choosing to trust them with a very small amount of money is liable to lead to choosing to trust them with larger and larger amounts. You may be confident you'd never do that. You may be right. But plenty of smart people have been reeled into things like this and lost a lot.

Just as a note, this company is officially registered in the UK
I'm aware that that doesn't mean a terrible whole lot

I understand that puzzle, but it's still bad
Haha

It is indeed

alright guys
so

Hm?

please refrain from the 'told you so'

Welp.
We did warn you.

Indeed
Attempted to withdraw again
the website is now down
rip

What's the problem with the above mentioned cipher puzzle? A lot of down votes!

@incesterror21 Because all it is is a cipher
I know exactly how to do it
But it's still just ciphers

Isn't that what a cipher puzzle is about?

@incesterror21 You shouldn't just put a cipher and say "figure it out!", you should give hints to it, else it's just "guess what I'm thinking"

Maybe everything we need is there?
Like in other puzzles

see the linked code puzzles what not to do

That would just add another opinion to the discussion I guess.

@incesterror21 Everything we need is there. It's still tedious

And not much of a puzzle

4:51 PM
I see that ciphers are easy to mass produce.

Quality ciphers are harder

And they sometimes lack some kind of cleverness.

I wonder if this will ever rise to 10k views for my gold badge. I've been watching it and it's risen by 200 in the last month, maybe by summer?

This cipher is not easy to mass-produce
Also, can you guys check this out for me, please? Thoughts?

bit random :)

4:55 PM
yeah, that's what I thought too

Sometimes it's useful to remember URLs...

@incesterror21 lndeed

@TrojanByAccident I would roll back
