@Alconja Another very nice puzzle. There are a lot of good puzzles around here, though many of them I've got no way to begin on, or they require some leap of intuition from the start. But this one was fun and it was like lighting up my whole neural net at once, keeping track of relationships, relative definitions, etc. Thanks!
As always (for me) the most important criterion is: fun. Couldn't put that one down once I got started. Deliberately didn't check if other answers had been posted so I wouldn't ruin it.

Q: Square of number sequences

user189275
@Ankoganit Yeah, low quality.

..yeah, I noticed it, but didn't bother answering. Not sure it's really a puzzle (unless there's another layer to it). Seems to be more of a "do you get these references/in jokes?"... i.e. if you answer yes, then you're guaranteed to "solve" it, but if you answer no, you're guaranteed to not get it.

user189275
@Alconja Haha. You're right, but the jokes are little funny too.

4:37 AM
@ArbitraryKangaroo: I saw! :D
Yeah, I'm not really sure I like it either. It's funny, but seems to be more "trivia" than "puzzle" - the only difference is that it's trivia about puzzlers.

And did someone else get the feeling the poster is a sockpuppet of someone we know? I'm hoping they're not, but can't shake off the feeling.

user189275
@Ankoganit Yeah, it's probable, because the trivias are deep ones.

Either that or it's someone who's been stalking us...

(For the avoidance of doubt, I didn't mean to offend anyone)

user189275
@Deusovi Yeah, it's half joke to everyone, so stalking is possible too.

Q: Sum other numbers . . .

humnBegin with a flagrantly erroneous sum and a woefully vacant substitution table. 234 + 5 Digit 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 ------- Substitute digit _ _ _ _ _ _ _ 5678 How can the substitution...

The first time I saw this I interpreted it wrong :P:
All positive, @Techidiot, only digits are being substituted — humn 37 secs ago

9:05 AM
Yeheheh, hard to sound polite when using "idiot" in a sentence, no matter how positive it starts out.

I think your puzzle is not "almost too easy" for me :P Sadly just adding the substitute for 5 to every digit above with ignoring remainder works for too many combinations :/ For example 975+1=1086. That's the first thing I thought (considering the lateral-thinking tag)
Or are we only allowed to use 2-8 for the substitues?

Haaa, really enjoy seeing what brings out, even though it can all be done with straight digit substitution.
May use 0-9. (time to revise while the ink is still wet)
Much clearer now, Lukas, thanks for asking.

9:41 AM
Does someone here know why random pastebins always get so much views? Are there people lurking all the time waiting until someone publishes a top secret file or what?
@humn When using the intended method, is there certainly only one unique solution for your question?
I.e. substitution combos

I'm taking your suggestion and revising the puzzle statement to say that the summation has a unique solution.
You might guess that means the substitution table is not unique.

Oh ok, I was talking about a unique substitution table. I mean that only with that particular table the summation (or whatever it is in the end) will work. This would obviously be a huge hint if you'd tell me, but if there are many combinations for the table it might be too broad IMHO.
Because that would mean my proposed solution would also be a valid answer, even though it has a ton of table combos

10:00 AM
Maybe I don't understand your solution(s) yet after all.
I thought you were moving digits around, though not exactly like Techidiot.

My fault, I can't really explain it... For my example 975+1=1086: 9+1=10, 7+1=8, 5+1=6. Now append all results like a string to eachother, i.e. 1086. This works for 20 combinations.

Got it, like distibuting addition the way multiplication distributes.
A tag comes with extra responsibility to include guardrails as well as guidelines, i guess, but it sure does get some free ideas for future puzzles!

10:23 AM
(oh, Alconja, sorry about that mercurial comment at your swag message, if it lasted long enough to notify you. Got all excited by what looked like a computer much too modern for 8-inch floppies.)

@LukasRotter I think it's because they naturally invite (easy and early) partial answers, which makes them much more likely to hit the HNQ, which gets more eyeballs.
@humn all good. :)

@Alconja I'm talking about pastebin posts.

As in pastebin "treasure hunt" puzzles? Because that's what I'm referring to...

@Alconja No, I'm referring to any pastebins. Every time I post one and refresh the page after a minute I have around 50 views.

National security agencies can probably account for only 37 of those.

10:28 AM
Huh... Odd.

If the number is consistent, could there really be that many automatic readers/scanners?

I guess it's just bots trying to filter messages for crucial information... Whyever someone would post private/important info on pastebin.

There might be 50 people, each of whom once found something so good they keep hoping for another lucky strike.

aha, I found this article and this list. Apparently it's popular for hackers and pastebin wants more "manpower" to remove sensitive content.

Damn it, all the alphabetic values of "T", "E" and "R" added together equals 40. But 40 mod 26 is 14 unfortunately, so close to 13 ;(

puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/45247/puzzle-based-on-word looks like homework or a contest or something of the kind; what if anything should we do?

@GarethMcCaughan I remember seeing a fairly similar puzzle to that on here a while ago, 2/3 weeks ago maybe?

"There is only a single operation that is valid for all the inputs and their respective outputs" Wanna bet?

@dcfyj Wouldn't surprise me, but I don't fancy grovelling through the last month's questions here in the hope of finding it :-).

Does unconventional tag include tags that appear together only in one question? :D

@Sconibulus I think it means "only one is required" rather than "there are no others that could give the stated output" and in fairness I'm pretty sure the intended one is about as simple as they get.

@LukasRotter Add 7 and you get Rot 47

@Alenanno Not necessarily; e.g. as the announcement says [rebus] + [no-computers] would be a unique combination but only because no one has bothered to include [no-computers] on their rebuses before.

2:01 PM
@dcfyj but where does the 7 come from? It must be somewhat reasonable at least :P

@GarethMcCaughan So that means unconventional tag = currently non-existing tag combination.

@Alenanno no, the point is that [rebus] + [no-computers] wouldn't be a good combination for "unconventional tag"
because it would basically just be an ordinary rebus

@GarethMcCaughan Ah uhm, I see.

@LukasRotter Rotter.count + Rotter.count - Lukas.count = 7 :P
or .Length if you prefer

@dcfyj Very intuitive. Now everything has been explained :P

Yeah, it's seen all these puzzles and it hasn't solved a single one yet
:-)

@GarethMcCaughan More like it took it 20 minutes to put the puzzle in here

@dcfyj Yes, I know what you meant. I was just joking (obviously not very successfully; can't win 'em all).

A question @GarethMcCaughan can't answer!

2:13 PM
@dcfyj which one? (there are lots really, of course)

Sphinx being really slow

oh. Nah, that one gets closed as "too broad" because there are lots of possible reasons. Maybe it only runs once every half hour or something. Maybe it runs on a machine that's sometimes busy, and only does its thing in gaps between activity. Maybe it's getting its data from some central server and that only checks things occasionally. Maybe the slowness is actually a sum of multiple latencies -- lots of steps between puzzle posting and Sphinx posting, each of which adds a couple of mins. Etc.

Thank you for the vote of approval, @Deusovi:
If Ryan27 has the right answer, then wow, that's clever. +1. — Deusovi ♦ 3 hours ago
I was surprised that Sum other numbers got a positive reception at all, after the 1/3-negative response to Truth in numbers, which seems like a more interesting version of the same twist.
Any insight into the difference?

I think lateral thinking puzzles work best when they seem impossible at first, but questioning your assumptions makes them somehow work
In truth in numbers, the puzzle was extremely ard to understand ("a specific value" was not clever, just ambiguous), and had one obvious solution (change one to zero)

Can anyone explain to me why this happens -- puzzling.stackexchange.com/questions/37031/… is reporting as active today but actually looking at the page, there's no activity. Is this something that got added and then deleted, so nobody but the elite can actually see it, but that still leaves the page marked active? Or is there something else more sinister happening here?! Dun dun dunnnn

@humn also, with truth in numbers, the solution required messing with something seemingly "outside" the problem statement, which feels more like a "cheap trick", whereas sum of numbers remains self contained and just requires a different perspective of the problem statement.
@Rubio someone posted an answer and then deleted it

8:41 PM
Figured it'd be something like that. It's annoying. :) Thanks @Alconja

8:52 PM
That's a lot of insight, @ffao and @Alconja, thank you! Internalized more or less as:
- Big difference between what seems impossible and what seems too easy to be true.
- Better to take a chance on giving away too much by being specific than to try and cover up insecurity with cleverness.

@BeastlyGerbil Probably just a PR gag :P

@LukasRotter not sure

@BeastlyGerbil His next question will be like "Avigrail has risen from the dead" :P

Anyone know a good website/dictionary for checking syllables in English? I found that the division is rather unexpected at times, so I'd like something reliable to check. :D

Here's my favorite syllable site, @Alenanno, though I stopped looking after finding it:

@humn ah yes, but sometimes it doesn't show the word. Like it tells you "434 syllables!" but doesn't show the word being split.

Not always? Rats. Most of the time? (seems like always on my screen. maybe my screen needs to get around more)

@humn Well, it does it sometimes, but it's still annoying. There's no reason to do it. I mean, why hide the information I need the most and that your site is exactly designed to do?

The other place I look is Merriam-Webster: merriam-webster.com/dictionary/syllables
... though it sometimes pops up a word-fact before getting on to a word ...
... but at least it gives the syllabification right away once you get to the word ...
Good luck syllabifying, and spelling for that matter, English words! Truly surreal.

11:02 PM
Yeah.

Damn, I was almost done with a puzzle and I got stuck... need to redo it. ._.
@Deusovi What's the tag for the "placement" crosswords? You know the ones you need to fit, without clues.

I don't think we have a tag for those!

Hello, by the way.

(And hi!)

Would using along with a similar (but very different in other ways) type of puzzle be a good unconventional tag question?

Depends on what the other type was.

11:52 PM
@Deusovi Well, that's the problem, not sure what tag to use there lol
