4:45 AM
morning guys

@ShutterBug morning

morning

so whats new

winter is arriving, and getting up in the morning is harder :(

no no no, you've got it wrong, winter is leaving
;)

4:56 AM
lol
yeah leaving you and coming to visit us

hehe, you can have it
we had a really mild winter though

I sometimes wish we had DST here, getting up an hour later sounds so much better!
mid winter I drive to work in the dark and when I get to work the sun rises

awww :P

and having the cat sleep on top of me at night isn't helping my sinuses :(
I hate cats

1 hour later…
6:24 AM
TIL that telephoto lenses are better for portraits

TIL?

today I learned

i suppose photo.stackexchange dont have a facebook group/page?

ah
they do

just nothing on there

6:25 AM
telephotos are 'good' for portraits, i don't know about 'better' though
you see a lot of 200-300mm+ in the fashion industry though

@fluf depends on to which you're comparing

apparently they flatten the subject so you can get a nice image full of face+ shoulders without distortion

i'd say typically 50-200mm is the ideal range

yeah especially for us crop sensor guys :)

6:26 AM
@fluf thats technically the distance that does that.

they suggest 70-200 on ff

you just have to be back further to frame a portrait with a long lens

@rfusca thanks

feel free to share pictures on it

oh dear... my cousin... she is becoming wild there in the US

6:28 AM
@rfusca i'd be the first one if I do lol

yup!

@rfusca i prefer isolated subjects in portraits in most of the case, so longer lenses help me on that... and when you're using a 200mm and want a full body/above waist shot, you have to back off

@ShutterBug ya

though i wonder if a 85mm 1.8 provides better subject isolation than that 200mm f4 considering the same vield of view
yay! my package shall reach my cousins house today! 8-)

lol
@ShutterBug i should be able to check that. I got approved for a SE rental for a 85mm f/1.4

6:32 AM
i am having the feeling like "a small step for me, a large step for mankind" lol
cool, do that!

it'll be a few weeks though

canon do not have 85/1.4 :(
but sigma makes a very good 85 1.4

ya

prolly better than anything else

just get a nikon ;)
you know, a real camera

6:34 AM
lol...
i like toys ;)
the main reason i chose canon was because they have better support in my country and also larger user base, rental services etc etc
we still dont have many shops where nikon lenses can be rented

@ShutterBug do you rent stuff?

i loved D300s, so wanted to switch :(
@fluf a lot...
i dont have any pro grade gear myself, so renting is all i have
and rates are pretty cheap here...

Id like a d7000

for example, 100-400mm for a day would cost you around 15$ and if you take it for longer period, the rate comes down even more

ok I see

6:39 AM
@ShutterBug nice

I haven't done rental yet, I haven't been on "assignment" yet

how much would you cost in there? @rfusca @fluf?
@fluf i take my own assignments ;)

@ShutterBug yes but thats what I meant (I have never wanted to anything specific too rent a lens)

oh... we have some arranged photowalks here... by some local photography groups... thay are very active

6:42 AM
@ShutterBug CANON 15MM F/2.8 FISHEYE AUTOFOCUS LENS = R342.00 per day which /7 = $
$48

12.38$ per day... ah its cheap there as well

plus shipping

I collect from shops directly

i don't have any around me that do that

the telephoto lenses are more here :( 70-200 = $57 per day

6:45 AM
ouch!

yeah seems SA is more 3rd world than your country

the 70-200 2.8 goes around 20$ here
@fluf well, only difference is that these shops has only a few lenses we all dogfight for lol
i normally book at least 7 days prior to the day

OMS and thats apparently on the cheap side O_O there one place that charge you $185 to rent a Canon 300mm f2.8 L IS USM
I'm not looking any further this is depressing

lol
welcome to my world

my 50mm cost less than it would be to rent that 300mm

6:49 AM
lol

hehe!

I bought an Ef eye cup for my old 350D the other day for $14

this is cute! lol
http://techcrunch.com/2011/02/18/mame-cam-thankos-cute-micro-camera/

thought it was relatively cheap but seems its like close to 50% more than what it goes for in US
@ShutterBug cool

3 hours later…
10:19 AM
was trying out alien skin bokeh 2 software... handy i should say
and a cheap marumi CPL filter... produced better results than my expectation... however, for extreme wide angle shot, the filter ring is visible around the corners... thats a problem

nice

4 hours later…
2:19 PM
wow Reverse macro is kinda difficult

3:09 PM
over-exposed, under-exposed is the norm

@fluf this flickr set is all the results of my reverse macro experiments... hope you like them
http://www.flickr.com/photos/fahad-faria/sets/72157625733535863/

cool I'll have a look :)
damn O_O are those reverse macro
<3 lady bug
@ShutterBug flickr.com/photos/fahad-faria/5961067262/in/… how far away were you :?

a few centimeters i believe
@fluf most of them, except a few... check exif

I was actually surprised about the distance I can be away from a subject to have sharp focus
but also disappointed in some of the results

3:59 PM
use smaller aperture of you can
@fluf I've updated my answer

2 hours later…
5:36 PM
http://photo.stackexchange.com/questions/20927/what-is-a-point-of-interest-in-a-photograph-and-where-is-it-lacking-in-this-cand
its more like a "critique my photo" question... not sure if its constructive

@ShutterBug yea that is definitely borderline

5:53 PM
Mattdm is proposing that we make it on topic and constructive via meta.

i've got no problem with a specific "How do I address <this> with this photo" but general critique is not good for us

meta already has so much discussion and different opinions on this.. this is tough

i think hers is ok because it addresses it from the 'point of interest' perspective. which, although isn't real interesting to me, seems valid

just look at how differing the opinions are here: meta.photo.stackexchange.com/questions/815/…

oh, i know

5:57 PM
haha

somebody do me a favor - just go over to chat.stackexchange.com/rooms/16/the-frying-pan and click to add a star to the first starred item on the list
would be much appreciated

going for a badge at 10?

no badge, just trying to get 10
much thanks

6:29 PM
@rfusca which one?

the one with 6 stars, the tag looking one

lol awesome tag

hehe

@ShutterBug thats a vertical crop of a horizontal photo

6:37 PM
oooh

6:50 PM
wow it's hard to keep up in cooking chat

lol
this room used to be that active

what happened ?

we had a few really active chat members that left, and we lost the critical mass

ahh ok

7:11 PM
@rfusca The photography site seems to be lots of quiet people
There are still regulars in here

true

I'll chat most of the day but you guys are sleeping and having a conversation with one self isn't that cool :/
btw how long does imgur keep images?

"long time"

ok
now I just need to experiment more so that I can ask more questions!

7:29 PM
@Rowland btw, any chance you could pop over there and star the top message? It would make it 10

@rfusca Have you got OCD? ;)

something like that

wow the conversation in the frying pan can mean something toooootally different

@fluf lol

ooo LR4

7:39 PM
@Shizam yup

@Shizam Not very power friendly

hah, I settled on Aperture 3 a while back (in the face of free LR3) time to give LR4 a go
especially now w/how well SmugMug is integrated into LR

@Shizam I grilled my leg the other day with it

I'll bet, I've given up importing to LR or Aperture on my laptop, burns through battery
or my leg

or both

7:43 PM
importing is fine, its when I have been editing for an hour or so that my laptop sounds like jet engine

Wish Adobe would sort out their UX though :/

merc made a cool advert

8:06 PM
@rfusca do you know why they add pumpin to jams?

@fluf hMM?

yeah they add pumpkin to jams to "stretch" it, but is there another reason besides the stretching part cause I suppose the pumpkin doesn't really taste like anything
hi @SimonSheehan who likes to do drawings

hello

wow you were in a lot of rooms

8:11 PM
Quite a few ;)

@SimonSheehan are you an artist or is drawing just a hobby?

@fluf Neither - its a reference the the children's television show "Simon"

@SimonSheehan doesn't ring a bell

@fluf Every once and a while someone picks up on it :p

@SimonSheehan nope :( google aint helping
I don't think it aired here

8:15 PM
Probably not, it might only be in the Americas

Simon and the witch ?

I think it was just Simon, im not sure anymore to be honest

ok :)

9:03 PM
Bah, I hate doing graphic design
need to either convert an SVG to AI, or WMF to edit in Expression Design
Give me a camera any day :)
