@KorvinStarmast Not sure if this answers the potential question about casting Control Water on an underwater area (surrounded by water), but I did find this Q&A:
The spell control water says:
Until the spell ends, you control any freestanding water inside an area you choose that is a cube up to 100 feet on a side.
I understand what "standing water" is:
any body of stagnant water, including puddles, ponds, rainwater, drain water, reservoirs etc —...
@V2Blast control water I don't have an issue with, the whirlpool made sense; it was the part water that had me flummoxed. As I've only used that monster in a water and not water scene before, I had a mental image of something like Moses and the Red Sea, and the air / water interface being present. I think the ruling I went with made enough sense, because ... well .. magic. I'll think through it again and see if I come up with a different answer.
@KorvinStarmast Well, "Part Water" is still an option from the Control Water spell (as is "Whirlpool") - that's the context I was wondering about this in. But yeah, I agree, Part Water made me wonder too - it does seem to assume an area of water on the surface.
The "Flood" option does specify "standing water", and "Redirect Flow" specifies "flowing water" - but the "Whirlpool" option doesn't specify anything and could work in any kind of water, whereas Part Water also doesn't specify anything but seems to assume/imply that the top part of the AoE is on the surface of the water...
