Yeah, unfortunately modern war heroes don't tend to get the same status as heroes of history. I mean, it's a good thing that we don't glorify war, but it's a bad thing that sacrifices go virtually unheard of beyond statistics nowadays.

@SoraTamashii you can learn a lot of military history and not learn something because it's in a different domain from what you've been learning about
there are also lots of folks who have done some pretty amazing stuff, but it's in a domain that just doesn't fit what the conceit of what you're talking about

Shalvenay, I can research them and get back to you on if they'll work or not. I know a little about Carlos Hathcock at least. That said, I will point this detail out for Heroic Spirits: Their strength is equal to their stories and renown. It's why Shakespeare is a weak Heroic Spirit, because there aren't many stories with HIM as the star, merely the writer, despite being so famous. Likewise, Vlad Tepes/Vlad III is more powerful when on Romanian soil, due to his actions to save his kingdom, as drastic and bloody as they may have been.

@Shalvenay The source material (the Fate anime/manga series, unrelated to the published Fate TTRPG) isn't meant to be realistic. It's an extension of the trope where characters have magic battle monsters, except the battle monsters are figures from folklore/legend/history.
The "Holy Grail War" in this context isn't a war and doesn't incorporate military aspects. It's more like a battle royale between the maguses, who don't always have practical magic.
Also the battle monsters are intelligent humanoids, with the personality and powers based on their stories, and can go on dates, and I'm not going to elaborate on that last point any further.

And again regarding the military history thing, not all the spirits are based on military or martial figures. Some are based on artists, politicians, or religious or occult figures.

While the summons are assigned classes in a martial context (saber, lancer, archer, etc.) they're not all on board the war or killing narrative. Sometimes they just want to be your surrogate father figure.

Mike Q, the dates part is really only applicable in the VN and is pretty much Fate/Stay Night exclusive. Zero, Apocrypha, Kaleid Illya, etc. they serve their role as tools moreso than as people (except in Kaleid Illya), but you have to use the fact that they are people (except in Kaleid Illya) as a means of manipulating them to act according to your will... or you could just waste a valuable order on Jack the Ripper to keep her from murdering you. One of the two.
