@Gimelist No, it was about how SE handled it. Monica asked questions, they demodded her and smeared her in the press, botched their communication subsequently, and fired two community team members who were in good standing with the community, while a third one resigned. The CoC update was fine. There's a letter from moderators somewhere that summarises it pretty well, I think it's linked in the post I linked.
I need to sleep though (01:07 here)

@gerrit good night

They were also disparaging comments about meta (something about the total no. people participating in meta fit in a Manhattan apartment), which they later admitted was wrong (see one of the last links in the post I linked), their own (fired) employees had reportedly already told them their disparaging comments on meta were not based on the facts... but anyway, goodnight.

This isn't about Earth Science but it is pretty cool nonetheless. It's a simulation of the star Betelgeuse. Apparently we're not going to see it go supernova after all.

@uhoh I think you should combine your two Mars questions into one, they're almost identical

8:57 AM
gerrit but what exactly happened? Celio didn't want to use they to defeand transgenders? I haven't find the root of the demotion. I read somewhere the trigger was some private emailing. So nobody knows what exactly happened?

@Gimelist From time to time I ask different but related questions. While the introductions look different the answers will be different.
In the past when I ask them together I get "you have asked two questions, you probably should ask them separately"
So now to avoid that, when I have two different questions I ask them separately. The answers will definitely be different.

I see two problems with the pronouns issue. One is they sugest to identify your gender on your profile. A woman can have reasons to preserve this anonymous, more in a field dominated by men as is coding. See for example this post of chess.com owner chess.com/blog/erik/harassment-and-toxic-behavior-on-chess-com
The other is, I don't knwo in english, but in spanish inclusive language is ridiculous. I posted this and people commented french and german had the same trouble meta.stackexchange.com/questions/339133/…

Q: Spatial Continuity in python

zsh_18I have data like this of rocks from 3 blast holes: These are the rock properties of each blast hole of a mining site. The rock properties come from the Block model of that mining site. I want to calculate the spatial continuity of these blast holes with up to V(X+12) for having 12 r square va...

@Universal_learner She asked questions in the moderator-only chatroom and in direct messages to management. What exactly happened, I don't know, but it certainly doesn't justify what SE did next and since.
The problem is not about pronouns.
Looks like we have another HNQ

And do you think the agreement means stack payed her to retire the sue for difamation?
I asked my mother who teaches law and she say she can't be sure on US but looked clear difamation, a won judgement.
My concern is people who donated 600$ may feel now they were contributing to put SO in troubles
not for this
But she espciefied clearly if the crowfounding surpass the law costs (finally 0) she would donate to LGTBI collective. It was adviced

Her law costs were not zero, she did get a lawyer.

Yes but she migth payed they with the reward if stack payed. My father is lawyer. Usually in this cases where the judgement is won you pay the lawyer with a percentage of the money you gonna win

Personally, I am unhappy with (1) SE firing Monica Cellio without due process and then defaming her in public, (2) SE firing two highly regarded community team members, especially knowing a third was on his way out, (3) SE imposing rules top-down such as "moderator resignation notices shall be featured at most 24 hours", which they after heavy protests first changed to three days, then revoked completely.

The details of the settlement are not disclosed, presumably that is part of the settlement.

I am here for just two years and I don't read many meta, sometimes....., but I see many users disgusted. Something they should have done wrong

But, maybe they are learning and getting back in the right direction, there have been some hopeful messages in the last couple of weeks.

Yes I read one. Rebuild the relation with the community. They upvoted it

It'll turn into downvotes again if not followed by actions. It happened before.

Yes also I think it has 300 upvotes or so I think. If well accepted it would have 1000.

Still, on day one it received Up: 207 Down: 15 (14 upvotes per downvote), on day 2 Up: 161 Down: 18 (8.9 upvotes per downvote), on day three Up: 66 Down: 9 (7.3 upvotes per downvote), on day four Up: 19 Down: 6 (3.2 upvotes per downvote), today Up: 7 Down: 4 (1.8 upvotes per downvote).

12:39 PM
thanks for sharing that. I was wondering how many people downvoted

Do you have enough rep on MSE to see it? meta.stackexchange.com/posts/343890/…

Ah ok I thougth that was a 2k rep or so tool
thx

Ah, for you it might only say Score rather than Up, Down

yes I don't see the votes. I see some info
I only see score that's it. I have just +500 rep
I see today score is 3 but not 7 up 4 down

Yes, you'd need 1000 rep on MSE for that.
David Fullertons apology started with day 1 Up: 124 Down: 7, day 2 Up: 309 Down: 100, day 3 Up: 88 Down: 62, day 4 Up: 40 Down: 60, day 5 Up: 23 Down: 74, day 6 Up: 22 Down: 87, day 7 Up: 4 Down: 26, day 8 Up: 1 Down: 31, and the ratio has been similar since then (although the total number of votes dropped)

Pokerstars server is in maintenance and I am bored gerrit :)
waiting for my results to obtain a job on administration
I did the exam well, but not sure if I will get a place. It will depend how other handicapped did the exam
I have mechanography result, i passed it. I have partial results of Microsoft Office. I was the 10th for 13 fix places (I will be employed anyhow for passing the 4 tests), and I am gonna have a similar score as in first test of law ans psychotechnics
wish me luck
I can't be fired if I get one of the 13 places
and 75% of asperger are unemployed. success

Good luck, 75% really? I'm part of the 25% then.
In the previous millenium I made a homepage about my Asperger syndrome, linked in my user page

that stat is for Spain, 3.000.000 of unemployed
at Germany it should be less :)

Probably

1:40 PM
Spain, where you study and nobody gives you a job :(

Come north

I have sent some cvs on France, I have equivalent to First on french. The problem is there are no geology laboratories on Spain (unless one or two), but well I am gonna be employed by adminsitration (still waiting for the results if a fix job). 1500 euros while 1800 is the medium salary. And I am earning 500 monthly euros playing poker (I expect more, I am reading books). And my family, mi friends and my language are here

I've changed countries seven times.

In France you should find a postdoc position for 1-2 years "easily", but a permanent academic position would be very hard.
There are dozens of candidates for one position.
Well I guess it's the same everywhere, but I mean the situation is getting worse. There is less and less money for public research every year.

That's true everywhere.
For a permanent position you need to be a perfect workaholic superman AND lucky. The department will have 5–10 perfect workaholic supermen to choose from (among dozens of other good to excellent candidates).

There is currently a social movement among researchers to condemn this situation.
But after all it's what we do best in France: strikes and protests! :D

In England, we were a research group of maybe 12 people, only the prof was permanent.
We tried to do a postdoc strike at U of T without success. I think postdocs don't want to strike. And when they strike they will just continue doing their research from home.
They also don't exactly disrupt society imminently if they go on strike.
U of T = University of Toronto, Canada

It's sad. This system does not select the best people, it selects the most tenacious people, which is very different.

2:12 PM
I've moved a few steps away from academia, although I'm still close and still temporary (working in research for the German Weather Service)
But the ratio here is better, about half the researchers are permanent rather than less than 10%.
Less blue sky science, more maintenance, but also more jobs.

I'll probably have to move away too after completing my Ph.D. I have a young kid and an old dad, I don't really want to move every 2 years for the next 10 years...
I'll try something in public outreach/scientific journalism maybe.

My wife is also moving out later this year, after years of the the two body problem (8 years since I asked that question...)
Since finishing our PhDs, we only managed to live together for 6 months, now my wife is probably going to look for a programming job.
And we don't have children.

Well, I'd say it made me reconsider what is really important in life. :)
I don't mean that science is not important, just that it became a secondary priority, after family...
Although I know some people make their job come first, before family, and I guess it's fine as long as they chose this way of living and enjoy it.
I'm not judging, it's their choice. I guess we need some workaholics.

An office mate of my wife broke up with his girlfriend to focus on science...
When you have children everything is different though.
If people want to neglect their own social and love life because of being a workaholic, then that's their choice, but if they do so while having a child then I think that is not OK, the child has no choice and their interest should come first imo.

the fact is you need to first find a job and then find a family. usually happens in the other direction. I have a friend who works in bank Santander. He has been moved three times. He has not wife or children, but what if you have children and your wife has a work at your town?
but if he don't accepts he is fired
last time they moved him to Marbella, a beach party cool site.
They called him to a meeting and told me that he was thinking "again I had made life here they are gonna move me again, I will say no"
But when they told him Marbella his faced changed :) it is a cool place he lives well now
If I find a way to win at medium/high poker tables I will move to Malt myself.
And visit my friends from time to time
And try to make new friends but it is difficult to me that
cannabis is tolerated at Malt so no troubles with medication XD. that's not the case of other countries
